Paw Print Press Proudly Serving Itasca The Big Little Town since 1997 Itasca, Texas UIL Special Edition April/May, The Year of Wampus Cats 1 st in District UIL Academics, Cross Country, Wampus Cats Football, Basketball, Lady Cats Basketball, Track Corbitt to Represent 24 Compete at Academic IHS at State UIL Regional Meet Junior Devin Corbitt will compete in Editorial Writing at the State UIL Competition in Austin on May 14/15. She advanced by earning the Gold medal at the Regional Meet in Nacogdoches. This is Devin s second time to compete at Regional but her first trip to the State Meet in writing. 12 Runners Head to Regional Track Meet Placing in the Area Track Meet and qualifying for the Regional Meet were the boys relay team of Stanley Johnson, Desmond Guy, Greg Mason and Markell Rice and the girls relay team of Megan Goff, Eva Mayberry, Jasmine Guy and Caurtney Phillips (Sub Sha Monica Anderson). Competing individually are Megan Goff, Jasmine Guy, Jacob Boyd, Philip Thomas and Martell Wallace. The relay teams and individual competitors are pictured on page 8. An extraordinarily large group of students loaded the bus to make the 4-hour trip to Nacogdoches to compete in the Regional UIL competition this year. A total of 24 students competed in a variety of events. At the competition, Megan Goff earned a 5 th place medal in Feature Writing, Susie May took a 5 th in Prose, Rebecca Cisneros a 6 th in Informative Speaking, Ashley Durham a 5 th in Editorial Writing and Devin Corbitt earned a 1 st place in Editorial Writing. The IHS journalism team brought the Regional Journalism plaque home signifying that they were the best journalism school at Regional. All Campuses 1 st at District Denoting Itasca Exemplary UIL District In December, the middle school and elementary school competed in their district UIL contest. Both schools took 1 st place and with IHS s 1 st at district one would have to conclude that Itasca ISD is an Exemplary UIL District. Congratulations to all of the hard working students, their coaches and sponsors. Just one more way of proving what we have always know, Itasca Students are #1!
Page UIL Special Edition Paw Print Press Wampus Cats Win District 21-A Football Title The Wampus Cats football team was undefeated in pre-season and district play. They finished the season 10-1 after losing to the Normangee Panthers in a Bi- District match-up. Lady Cats Finish Season 27-5, Area Qualifiers For the first time in ten years, the Lady Cats won their district. They were undefeated in district, 10-0, and received a bye in the Bi-District round. They lost to Meridian Yellow Jackets in the Area match up. Wampus Cats Complete Season as Regional Quarterfinalists The basketball team finished the season with an impressive overall 23-8 record and a 10-0 record in district. The season ended for the Wampus Cats in the Regional Quarterfinal game in West losing to the Italy Gladiators IHS OAP Named Alternate at Area Competition The production of In the Garden of the Selfish Giant advanced out of Zone and District to earn a 3 rd place in the Area competition. The cast were Devin Corbitt, Cherri Lloyd, Rebecca Maul and Hannah Johnson. Crew members were Maria Zuniga, Courtney Barton, Emily Offutt and Aren Barton. Their director was Mrs. Susan Crawford.
Page UIL Special Edition Paw Print Press CX Debate Number Sense Cross examination debate has always been strong at Itasca. In the past, Itasca had done well in district and advanced right to state. (Debate meets are held separately from the other UIL events.) This year, partners Devin Corbitt and Martin Martinez earned a 1st place at district and Walker Hoard and Kristin Worth finished 2nd. The teams prepared affirmative cases and built cases to negate the competitions cases. Mrs. Susan Corbitt coached the debaters. LD Debate The Number Sense contest is for those who memorize easily and think swiftly. Contestants are not allowed to use calculators during the 10 minute test. Students cannot erase anything, what they write down first is their final answer. Students who competed this year in district UIL Number Sense came home with the team 1 st place plaque. Participants and their finish at district were Martin Martinez, Robert Duby 6th, Bob Slotvig 2nd, and Maria Worth 1st. Current Issues & Events Lincoln Douglas Debate is similar to Cross- Examination Debate, however the resolve is different and students do not have partners. LD Debate is based on the power of argumentation and persuasion. This year s LD team all advanced to Regional Competition. Marsha Guy earned the 1st place spot and the Top Speaker plaque, Rebecca Cisneros finished 2nd and Josh Shelton, 3rd. The team was coached by Mrs. Joy Anderson. To compete in the Current Events & Issues contest participants prepared by reading several magazines and newspapers. Some of their favorites are Dallas Morning News, Time, and Newsweek. The test has forty true or false questions to be completed before the one-hour time is up. This year s team of B.J. Jackson, Jonathan Fletcher and Colton Sullins worked hard to compete. They are coached by Mrs. Sally Crouch.
Page UIL Special Edition Paw Print Press Poetry Prose Poetry is a UIL speaking event where a student takes two pieces of poetry, masters them and performs them with much passion and emotion for the judges. This year Itasca s Poetry team of Jessika Rodriguez, alternate Stephanie Ignacz, Susie May and Aren Barton were lead by poetry coach, Mrs. Janet Gordon. At district Junior Jessika Rodriguez, earned a 2 nd place with her two Anne Sexton pieces, Senior Susie May, received a 3 rd with her piece called Patterns and Warrior Child and Freshman Aren Barton earned a 4 th place alternate position with her two pieces Home Burial and The Spider and the Fly. All three went to Regional and Susie May earned a 5 th place medal. Science Prose is similar to Poetry, but here a student takes a short story, or a portion of a story, and works hard to memorize it and then performs it with gusto and enthusiasm in front of judges at a competition. Prose speakers were Jasmine Guy, alternate Stephanie Ignacz, Courtney Barton and Cherri Lloyd were coached by Mrs. Janet Gordon. At district juniors Courtney Barton earned 3 rd place, and Cherri Lloyd 2 nd place and alternate sophomore Jasmine Guy received 4 th place to be an alternate at Regionals. Social Studies The UIL Science team was made up of Desmond Guy Ciera Thompson, Maria Worth, Ryan Crouch, Timothy Earhart and Eddie Coronado. They were coached by Brenda Swilley. The science test has three parts: biology, chemistry and physics. This test like some others in UIL, gives points for correct answers, deducts points for wrong answers and takes no points away for leaving answers blank. They prepare by taking practice science tests. The social studies team of Morgan Nalley, Maria Worth, Kristen Worth and Elizabeth Bennett under the direction of Mrs. Judie McClure spent many hours reading books, studying history books and watching videos. At district, Kristen Worth placed 5th. Members of the team were required to answer basic history questions and questions about a specific historical book. They also had to write an essay question on the test that challenged their writing skills as well as their knowledge.
Page UIL Special Edition Paw Print Press Informative Speaking Spelling & Vocabulary Informative Speaking involves a student drawing a topic from a current newspaper and writing an informative speech on it. Then the students gives the speech to a panel of judges. The students also have a limited amount of time to do so. On the Informative speaking team this year are Devin Corbitt, Rebecca Cisneros, and Josh Shelton. These students are coached by teacher Mrs. Judy McClure. Advancing to the Regional UIL Competition are Junior Devin Corbitt 1 st at district and Sophomore Rebecca Cisneros 3 rd at district advanced to Regional where Cisneros earned a 6 th place medal. Persuasive Speaking In UIL Spelling, students have to spell words that are called out, recognize misspelled words in a reading, and know the meaning of words. Participants prepare by doing computer-generated tests, listening to tapes and studying a guide with the words and their meanings. Certain percentages of the words come from newspapers and magazines and are technical terms. Because of this, students have to be familiar with current events. Competing on the Spelling team were Victoria Trejo, Zech O Rarden, Ivan Gomez, and Chelsea Rodriguez. Chelsea received 4th place at district. The team was coached by Mrs. Sally Crouch. Mathematics In Persuasive Speaking students draw topics on the spot and then writes a speech to persuade the judges about their beliefs on their topic. The speeches must be written in a limited amount of time and the presentation is also judged on its length. Speaking were Caurtney Phillips, Rebecca Maul, and Aren Barton. This team of students is lead by Mrs. Judy McClure. Advancing to the Regional Competition were Freshman Rebecca Maul with a 1 st place finish at district, Freshman Aren Barton with a 3 rd third place and Senior Caurtney Phillips who qualified as an alternte with a 4 th place finish. Bob Slotvig, Colton Sullins, Ryan Crouch, Matthew Wilkins, and Chelsea Rodriguez were this year s mathematics team. To make the team Math Coach David Scott picked the students who were best in Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus. The test is 60 questions asked in the ACT and SAT format. The students have more time to think on these questions than any other math event. Calculators are permitted.
Page UIL Special Edition Paw Print Press Ready Writing Calculator Applications Essays exaggerating a certain quote or general idea can be written beautifully and with talent, however, Megan Goff and Devin Corbitt lacked flowery language and came off more as journalists instead of the next Tennessee Williams at the District Meet, Competitor Megan Goff said. We did take a 5th and 6th, though. Mrs. Grace Hennig is the Ready Writing coach. Literary Criticism Calculator is a math competition and students are allowed to use only a HP 32 SII calculator. Competitors have 30 minutes to write down as many answers possible. The test consists of questions from math, geometry, number crunching and stated problems. Coach Mr. David Scott was very proud of his team members Stephanie Ignacz Philip Thomas, Robert Marshall, Maria Worth (4th at district) and Rosendo Zavala (2nd, at district). The team placed 2nd at district. Computer Science, Accounting, Computer Applications For the first time in many years, Itasca did not have a team in all UIL events. IHS did not enter a Computer Science, Accounting or Computer Applications teams. Since BCIS is currently being taught at the junior high level no team was entered. With some schedule changes being planed for next year, these competitions may be re-added next year. Literary Criticism is a mouthful and it reads just as difficult as the test given. The test is two parts based on the participant s background knowledge in literature. To prepare, Mrs. Grace Hennig has her students read different pieces of literature and watch the film made from the novels. This year s team included Krystal Benefield, Elizabeth Bennett, and Trey Rice (missing from photo.) Benefield finished 2 nd and Beenett 5 th. They were the 2 nd place team at district
Page UIL Special Edition Paw Print Press Itasca Takes Overall Journalism Plaque at District Repeats at Regional News Writing Editorial Writing Remember, just the facts, give the future in the intro, and use good transitions! Journalism sponsor Barbara Petrash briefs her writers before they enter their testing site. That s all news is, fact after fact in a flowing format. At district Megan Goff placed 2 nd in the event, Ashley Durham 3 rd, and Mary Maddox 6 th. Megan and Ashley advanced to the Regional Meet in Nacogdoches. Feature Writing In the editorial competition, Ashley Durham sweeps the floor with her strong stance. This is Ashley s second year to win first place at district and advance. Devin Corbitt came in with a 2nd place and Hannah Montana was 4th. In an editorial, the writers are given a situation, such as if a school district should allow their employees to carry concealed handguns, and the writers take a stand and convince the reader that their view is best. Apparently, Ashley s view and strong writing came out on top, but at regional is was a different story and Devin Corbitt took 1 st earning a trip to Austin and Ashley took 5 th. Their high finishes combined with Megan s feature medal gave Itasca the Regional Journalism plaque. Headline Writing A feature story generally focuses on one person or event. The most important thing in a feature story is the introduction, which should really catch the reader s attention. The Senior Spotlights are usually written in such a format. At district Megan Goff placed 1 st, Sarah Evans 2 nd and Hannah Montana was 3 rd. All of the writers advanced to Regional and Megan brought home a 5 th place medal from Nacogdoches. Eva Mayberry was the journalism alternate at district. Headline writing takes a mind of its own. These word puzzles are no easy job. The creative minds of Devin Corbitt, Aaron Chavez and Sarah Evans made up the team that competed in the event. Devin took a 2 nd place medal at district and Aaron earned the 4 th place. The contestants are given six short stories and a certain amount of line space and time to produce six accurate and sometimes clever headlines.
