1 3 November 2017 Issue No. 7 TROJAN NEWS INSIDE THIS ISSUE: NEWS Golf Spotlight: Maddie Smithco....3 SPORTS Football Championship Win? Girls Cross Country For Win....4 OPEN HOUSE WOWS PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS By: Nicole Twitchell Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic s annual open house was indeed a success. On Sunday, October 29, potential future students and their families came and got a feel for Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. Many families attended and received a well-designed tour given by one of the many students that volunteered. This year s open house had the best turn out yet. Many families left the school impressed by the school itself, as well as its faculty and students. The students took families on tours around the entire school. The students worked very hard and did an excellent job at showing off Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. The teachers described the school s great strength in academics to the people who attended. They prepared their rooms and gave excellent input regarding their classes. English teacher, Miss Skirtich said that This year s open house was exciting and the start of admissions for the next school year. Many of the students who toured really loved the school and are intending to come to Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic next year. 2 IS A CHAMPIONSHIP WIN IN THE WORKS? By: John Fukon As an incredible regular season concludes, the playoffs are beginning and the hype is starting for the football team. After winning the section and going undefeated, the Trojans are rolling and ready to fight for the championship. The team is playing extraordinarily well right now and is seeking a WPIAL Championship. Every one of the players on the team believes that they can win, and they are all willing to give it all they have to do so. As the regular season concluded, the Trojans had huge victories with large number of points on the scoreboard. The boys were simply blowing out the competition. The last game against Freedom was 51-0, which is unreal. The Trojans also beat their rivals from last year, Neshannock and Riverside, in crucial games which led to them winning the section. The team is hopeful that the momentum from the regular season carries into the first round of the playoffs and continues all the way up to the championship. In order to keep being successful, the team needs to stay locked in on the task ahead of them. Senior Seth Benson says the team is extremely focused for the game this Friday, they are taking each game one step at a time in order to perform the best they possibly can. The boys have been working hard in practice by lifting weights and practicing plays every day in order to outplay their competition. The work ethic is incredible and, as a school, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic would like to wish the Trojans good luck in their road to Robert Morris, where the championship game will be held. EXCLUSIVE! FALL FESTIVITY HOT SPOTS By: Katelyn Dudash As weather becomes cooler and the leaves change color, there is a growing excitement for the fall activities that have become tradition. People begin to plan for days at their favorite farm, corn maze, or festival where they will enjoy various fall activities for people all of ages, from children, to teens, to adults. One of the most popular fall activities for people of any age is a visit to the pumpkin patch. Children can pick out pumpkins to paint or carve, teens can maneuver their way through the corn maze, and adults can enjoy the "fall foods". Each pumpkin patch in the area provides different kinds of activities for families to enjoy. Some popular farms in the area include Soergel Orchards, Reilly's Summer Seat Farm, and Coolspring Corn Maze. Another fall activity that is popular among teenagers is haunted houses or fright nights. Kennywood Park in Pittsburgh hosts a "Phantom Fright Night" every year, which is a unique experience, like an outdoor haunted house. Other infamous haunted activities include Cheeseman's Fright Farm, the Beacon, and Hundred Acres Manor. Autumn doesn't last long, so take advantage of the cool weather and beautiful foliage! 2
3 STATE CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT: MADISON SMITHCO By: Ava Perock Congratulations to golfer Madison Smithco on winning the State Champion for Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. Smithco has been playing golf since she was ten years old. Smithco says "I would go to the driving range when I had nothing to do." A year and a half later, she officially started to go to golf courses. She says that her lucky golf club is her driver because "it gives me an advantage over a lot of people because I am very accurate with it." With Smithco being the only girl on the golf team, I asked her a few corresponding questions. She says that it was difficult to get used to at first but she has gotten used to it. She also said that she does miss the bond she would have with girls that she used to have when she played other sports. Smithco says that her inspiration is Stacy Lewis because she is one of the top woman golfers. In preparation for WPIALs, Smithco spent most of her time outside of school practicing all parts of the game. She went to see her swing coach and went to the golf courses where the WPIALs took place so that she could get a feel for the course. She says winning State Champion is "great because my goal was to win the states at some point during my high school years and to be able to do that sophomore was even better." Her advice for future golfers is to practice and have fun with it. It is also a tradition at North Catholic for all State Champions to ring the bell. Miss Smithco rang the bell Wednesday, November 1st after mass. Good job to Madison Smithco again for all her hard work this golf season and in future seasons to come. 4 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY FOR WIN By: Caitlin Cole Our cross country team has been preparing and working very hard to compete in the WPIAL championship. One of the members of the team, Lucy Waskiewicz, told us that the team did a lot of tough workouts together which really helped strengthen, not only our running, but the bond of our team as well. The team stayed strong and dedicated before WPIALS. After more difficult practices and the extra push from their team captains, they were finally ready for the championship. Although the course was different than the racers expected, they already had strategies to complete the course. This year there were a lot of fast times by runners from CWNC. Although the boys did not place 1st, 2nd or 3rd, they did move up significantly in places this year compared to prior years. Our girls team took place second. Both teams are going to prepare for the challenging course at Hershey with hard and efficient practices. Lucy also told us, Coach Rylee Kopchak is keeping everyone positive and excited for this great opportunity. Everyone is very excited - we would like to wish them the best of luck and hope they bring us back some Hershey s bars. 5 FROM THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT: ONE ACT PLAYS PROVES TO BE A SUCCESS By: Lauryn Lucatorto On Sunday, October 29 th, the CWNC Drama Department presented a series of student-directed one act plays. The three plays performed were entitled Check Please, A Matter of Husbands, and The Great American Talent Show. Check Please by Jonathan Rand was directed by Grace Philips, a senior. The storyline follows a boy and girl as they go on a series of blind dates that all turn out to be disastrous, until they finally meet each other. A Matter of Husbands, by Ferenc Molnor, was codirected by juniors Adrianna Amelio and Aletta Fischer, who also starred in their play. The plot is about a poor young woman who confronts a wealthy actress and blames her for stealing her husband. The last play performed that afternoon, entitled The Great American Talent Show, was written by Joseph Robinette. It was directed by senior Kylee Kilzer, and was a mock television talent show in which all the talents were less than impressive. All of the plays were a huge success. Thank you to everyone that came to support the CWNC drama program. Congratulations to the directors, crew, and cast for executing a great performance.
