The Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic football team took on the best school in their conference, Neshannock, Last Friday the 1 st at J.C. Stone Field. In the previous years, our football team has been beat by Neshannock. This year, everyone gathered in the student section to watch this riveting game. Talk of the upcoming game in the school hallways made the belief of a North Catholic loss more popular. Once the game started, there was a lot of tension in the crowd. Just four minutes into the first quarter, the Trojans scored their first touchdown, making the score 6-0. The kick to score the extra point was blocked. The student section went wild. The rest of the first quarter went on to be scoreless. As the second quarter started, Neshannock sadly took the lead as they scored their first touchdown, making the score 6-7. The Trojans didn t waste any time getting the ball back. Thirty seconds before the end of the first half, the Trojans made a 35- yard pass to score the final touchdown of the game, making the final score There were no points scored during the second half of the game, keeping the score 12-7 for the rest of the game. As the last few minutes on the clock ran down, the football team and the coaches were jumping for joy on the sidelines. North Catholic s student section went crazy after defeating the teams biggest competitor. As the football team ran off the field, the cheerleaders congratulated them, and North Catholic spirits were high. After all the hard work the Trojan football team has put into their summer training and their loss last season against Neshannock, their win was much needed. For a really exciting game, the Trojans defeated Mohawk by a score of this past week. 1
OVERVIEW: GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS By: Nicole Twichell It is the third year of the girl s varsity tennis team. The team has grown significantly since last season and is ready for a great season. The top four teams in each section go to playoffs, and last year the team was fifth. The tennis team s goal is to make it to playoffs this season. Captain, Olivia Solverson says that, I believe that the team has been doing really well this year and I have high hopes for this season! The team has been working very hard and remains to do so. All of the girls want themselves and each other to succeed. The girls started out 3-3 in section play and hope to continue winning. With the team s hard work and dedication, they are being very successful. Meets and practices are very positive, and the girls always encourage each other. All of the girls really enjoy being together and playing. The team is really positive, and I believe they will do very well this season. According to player, Katie Lynch, I think that if we continue working hard and encouraging each other, we will go really far. Many of the girls have been putting in extra work and practice to get better and succeed. Each year the team keeps getting more and more talented. With all of these great qualities the team possesses, the girl s tennis team could go to playoffs. All in all, the predictions for this year s girl s tennis team are positive, and they are looking very good. Good Luck girls! TAYLOR SWIFT: THE OLD VS. THE NEW By: Hailey Reisinger Taylor Swift is a singer-songwriter, who is known for creating songs about her life. Over the years her songs have changed genres from country, to pop. After asking several students about their opinion on the genre change, here are the result averages. Old New 2
VOLLEYBALL PREDICTIONS By: Nicole Twichell With the start of the girls volleyball season, this year s team is determined to have a great and successful season. Last year, the team went to playoffs but lost in the second round against Avonworth High School. This season, the girls are determined to beat Avonworth. Even with the loss of strong senior varsity players: Sarah Parey, Shannon Spangler, Sammi Robb, and Elizabeth Studebaker, this year s team is looking very good. The girls are confident and expect to go to playoffs again. The new freshman additions to the team, along with the girls from last year, are working very well together. All of this year s players have worked very hard during pre-season for the successes they plan to have this up and coming season. A majority of the girls prepared all summer by conditioning, going to camps, and open gyms. Varsity s Coach, Arica, and JV s Coach, Andrea, are expecting a great season to come and are very excited. The team is now working very hard at practices. I predict that JV and varsity will have a successful season because of their hard work and dedication to be successful. The girls are all very close and have a special bond. The whole team has the same goal which is to all do the very best of their ability and to push each other and themselves. Both JV and varsity won the recent scrimmage against Gateway High school. The varsity team almost beat Mars High School in a scrimmage. The varsity team put up a good fight against Mars, and it was a great scrimmage. With the start of the season, this year s girl volleyball team is excited for what they have in store. The predictions for the girl s volleyball team are extremely positive. This year s season could end up being one of the most successful one yet. Please come out and support your girl s volleyball team! OUR SCHOOL S NEWEST MEMBER By: Caitlin Cole There is a new member to Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic - and it is not a human. In the halls of CWNC, there has been a service dog assisting a student. A member of the newspaper committee had the opportunity to get to know more about the dog, Oliver. The student stated, He is a black Labrador retriever, and I use him to help me control my anger. Students - please remember not to pet, tease, or distract Oliver, as he is working. 3
BOYS SOCCER PREDICTIONS By: John Fukon The Varsity Boys Soccer team had a tremendous season last year which caught the attention of the students at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. However, the boy s season did not end as planned with a loss in the WPIAL Championship to Sewickley Academy. This year, the tides are turned and the team is searching for a great recovery. According to one of the captains, Luc Madonna, We re looking very stable at all positions. We brought back ten out of eleven starters from last year s squad. With experience and skill both returning, the boys are very excited for the season to begin. Madonna also stated, The main goal for this year is to play in the state championship in Hershey, PA. We also expect an undefeated section championship and a WPIAL title. The team has goals set aside that they believe are more than achievable. Confidence is not lacking in the boys soccer team this year, which is what they will need in order to bring home the title. The boys do not just talk and hope for greatness. Another captain, Nick Milas stated, Over the summer, we trained with daily trips to the gym and different types of practices which included conditioning, agility, and ball skills. The first step on their road to success is beating the defending champions, Sewickley Academy, who they know well from last year since they knocked them off their WPIAL Championship run. There has been quite a lot of talk going around about getting revenge on Sewickley. When asked how they will recover from last year s loss versus Sewickley, Milas stated, We will recover from last year s championship loss by beating Sewickley at our first game of the season and dominating the rest of our section to prepare for playoffs. The team s attitude and mindset is strictly focused on one goal, winning the championship. By working hard since last year s season ended, the boys have put themselves in a position to succeed. The team got a new coach, Aaron Kelly, who brings the whole squad together to reach the ultimate goal. Madonna added, Our coach is very positive, and we should be able to build upon that throughout the season. This positivity will give the boys the urge to get better every day on the field. With that in mind, I would like to wish the boys good luck in this upcoming season. As a school, we would all like to see them bring home the trophy for winning the championship. 5 NEW TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: Q&A FEATURING MS. GAUGHAN By: Caitlin Cole 1. What made you decide to come to CWNC? - I was planning on coming to North after I graduated, and was looking for jobs. When I saw there were job openings, I immediately took it. 2. Did you teach before coming to North, if so, where? - I taught at Vincentian Academy. 3. Where did you attend college? - I attended college at Carlow University in Pittsburgh. 4. What made you decide to teach biology? - One of my science teachers, Mr. Taylor, inspired me to teach science. He was an amazing teacher, and I thought, I want to do what he does. I started loving my science classes as I progressed as well. 5. What would be your strengths and weaknesses as a teacher? - My strength would have to be that I have been surrounded by children my whole life. I have been exposed to many different grade levels. My weakness is that I try to be a perfectionist. However, that is impossible in teaching. So many things could change. You could plan the perfect lesson, and have it go wrong. 5
NEW TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: Q&A FEATURING MR. CAMPBELL By: Kate Silvester There are many new faces to be seen walking around the halls of CWNC, one of those new faces is the new sophomore religion teacher, Mr. Campbell. He is a teacher of 3 and half years who grew up in Butler, PA. When asked What is something that people may not know about you, that you d like them to? Mr. Campbell answered that he was in the seminary studying to become a priest, he even studied in Rome, but ended up studying Philosophy and Theology. He graduated with his Bachelors in Philosophy at Dusquene and the Augustine Institute with his Masters of Theology. Before teaching at North Catholic, Mr. Campbell taught at Vincentian Academy. I wanted to introduce the relationship of Jesus Christ and share my faith with others, plus teaching is fun! Mr. Campbell said when asked why he wanted to become a teacher. One piece of advice that he would like to offer all students is to Make sure that you pray, cultivate a good prayer life because it becomes more difficult as you become older, as you move onto college. One thing that Mr. Campbell would like to achieve within the next 10 years is to have a big family and become a good father. CWNC is excited to welcome all of the great new teachers in our building, even if they taught at Vincentian first! FALL MUSICAL By: Lauryn Lucatordo Every year here at CWNC, the drama department puts on both fall and spring musicals. While the main focus has always been on the spring musicals, the fall musical is still a fun and laborious production. The tradition of having two musicals is a fun and cherished practice. Last year s fall production was The Mystery of Edwin Drood, an open-ended musical based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens. The audience was able to vote to decide end of show details, such as who was the murderer, who would fall in love, and who got to play the role of the detective. The musical required a large cast and a lot of versatility, but was an exciting and fresh experience for the cast and audience alike. This year it appears we are heading a different direction. The fall musical auditions, held on Aug. 30th, produced a small but talented cast of around 20 people. The cast list and show announcement was posted in the chorus room on Friday, Sept. 8th. This fall s production will be Snoopy, The Musical. This show is a comedy by Larry Grossman and Hal Hackady that focuses mainly on the life of the character Snoopy from the classic Peanuts comics. The musical will be directed by Ms. Young, and the performance dates are already set as Dec. 1, 2, & 3. The cast can be viewed below. Cast List: Charlie Brown, Alex Hoehn; Linus, Jake Ball; Schroeder, Tim Roos; Sally Brown, Ana Weigand; Lucy, Aletta Fischer; Peppermint Patty, Adriannna Amelio; Marcie, Kylee Kiltzer; Snoopy, Grace Philips; Woodstock, TBA. Ensemble: Lauryn Lucatorto, Lauren Krebs, Ricky Conrad, Beth Martin, Ava Perock, Antonia Schaefer, Mckenzie Waslosky, Caitlin Cole, and Jordan Okuzu. 6
