3 Merced College is located in the farm-rich San Joaquin Valley. With over 81,100 people, Merced is small enough to be comfortable and large enough to have all the conveniences of the larger cities but without the headaches. Merced has the honor of being the County Seat. The Valley, has an average temperature range of 48 degrees to 95, with 14 inches of rainfall. The magical city of San Francisco is just a short trip west of the college. San Francisco offers an abundance of culture and an endless array of entertainment. Traveling four hours south, you will find yourself in the middle of the City of Angels, Los Angeles and Hollywood, the movie making capital of the world. Yosemite s majestic beauty and tumbling waterfalls await those who travel one hour to the east. Yosemite offers snow skiing and camping for the outdoorsman. The Pacific Ocean is just two hours away to west. Its crashing surf and timeless beauty will keep you spellbound. Students who attend Merced College soon discover that it offers not only as much as other colleges--it offers more. Merced can offer the student a campus that is unsurpassed in facilities, a pleasing atmosphere and an environment that makes getting an education enjoyable. The faculty is made up of a dedicated staff that prides itself on the results of its students. The college provides an opportunity for personal growth and a strong educational foundation to take the student either on to a for year college or directly into the job market. Founded in 1963, Merced College continues to be a leader in community college education. It s a fully-accredited two-year institution which offers a variety of programs for its students. Essentially, these programs fall into two categories. Transferable courses are readily accepted by four-year colleges throughout the United States. A two-year program, which leads to an A.A. or A.S. degree, serves as the equivalent of their first two years of the B.A. degree at a four-year college. In this category are courses in the Arts, Sciences, Kinesiology. Humanities, Social Sciences, Business Agriculture and Industrial Technology, as well as pre-professional programs. Nontransferable courses serve two purposes. Students needing additional preparation for transfer type courses can enroll in a variety of Learning Skills programs. Students who do not wish to transfer to a four-year school can take classes that will lead to an A.A. degree or Certificate of Completion in various programs. A small sampling of these include: Business (including computers and management), Agriculture, Allied Health, Recreation, and Public Service (including Administration of Justice.)
