1 Huntingfield Hoofbeats Inside this issue: DC s report 2 Reminders, Canteen Roster Calendar Upcoming Events 19 Jun - HPRC Rally 25 Jun - Adult Riders 3 Jul - SJTK Jump Club 20 Aug - HPRC Barrel Racing Fun Day 4 May 2016 Rally 5 State Games 6 Huon ODE, Royal Hobart Show 8 Upcoming Events 9 Pony Club Profiles 10 June State Games Huntingfield Pony and Riding Club Inc Brighton hosted this year s State Pony Club Games and along with reasonable weather it was a fabulous day. Weeks of practise (and a few extra grey hairs for Meagan and Gibbo) paid rewards as our senior team came 2nd and our junior team came 3rd. The origins of mounted games stems back around 50 years to Colonel Sir Mike Ansell and Prince Philip of England, who s idea was for a competition for children who could not afford expensive, well-bred ponies. Many of the games today have a strong influence from their military background. Whist the games are deceptively fun, they also build many skills in both riders and their horses, as well as courage, determination and team spirit. It is also an exciting spectator sport due to the speed and skill shown. Of course it is a huge logistical exercise and a big kudos to Brighton for a smoothly run event, and to everyone who helped out to make the event possible as a huge number of volunteers are needed to make it happen. Thanks again to Meagan Sommerville and Andrew Gibson for their supreme coaching and particularly to Meagan who was at the helm guiding our kids through the finals and for being so supportive and generous!
2 Page 2 Huntingfield Hoofbeats DC s report NEW MEMBERS: This month we welcome new members: Harriet Spakman, age 14. You may recognise the horse she s riding yes, it s Mickey, Dannielle s gorgeous chestnut boy Lilly Paisley, age 6. Most of you will know Lilly, as she s a regular visitor to Huntingfield with mum Nicola, brother Sam and baby Jessica. Lilly will be riding Heidi and/or Willow. Lily Hansson, age 12. Lily has been having weekly lessons with our very own Liz Elliott for three years. She also has a chestnut, Chester. Please make them feel welcome (especially if they are in your group!) ZONE NEWS: You may or may not be aware that, under the Pony Club banner, we are part of the Southern Zone. So, who are these mysterious people who meet behind closed doors each month, and what do they talk about? Your Zone Committee currently consists of Narelle Rowlandson (President), Sue Newitt (secretary, test coordinator & chief coach), Erin Hunn (visiting commissioner), Trici Hankin (treasurer), Anne Cotton (chief coach), Jacinta Cantwell (zone delegate) as well as representation from each of the clubs in the southern zone, usually the DCs. Topics discussed include: Upcoming events and clinics (including dates, issues and feedback), changes to the rules and/or handbook, new members, insurance and safety, state-wide PCAT issues etc. It is also an opportunity to raise questions or concerns about all things pony club! FEES: At the June Southern Zone meeting, it was agreed that the zone fees, which haven t been increased for many years, will increase for $10 to $15 per annum from July 2016, when your membership is due. This extra $5 will go into a championship account to assist the club from our hosting state events, in particular with facilities costs. These costs are currently wholly born by the club hosting the event, which is often difficult to fully fund. You may also notice that the entry fees you pay for an ODE may slightly increase (by $5) from next season. Once again, the cost to host these events is rising (ambulance, vet, judges costs, consumables such as ribbons etc). We trust you understand this small increase is necessary to ensure the events maintain a healthy profit level, as so much work is involved. Southern Zone is hosting State Trials in 2017, which will be held at TEC. A Trials committee will be set up shortly. As always, volunteers and representatives are required from each club it s a Zone event, not a H&D event so please, let me know if you d like to be involved. PONY CLUB AUSTRALIA AWARDS The PCT Gala Dinner was held on 28 th May in Adelaide and Tasmania had three finalists in various Pony Club Australia National Award categories. Sue de kaste our State Treasurer finalist for the National Volunteer of the Year Award Carol Hobson finalist for the National Coach of the Year Award and Penny Dow finalist for the Pony Club Australia Gill Rolton Alumni Award and was announced the winner of her category! Penny grew up on the north west coast attending Pony Club, represented her Club at Trials and State Championships, represented the State at Nationals for eventing, represented Australia as a National Prince Philip Games rider and went on to study Vet Science at Monash University. She now works at the Scone Equine Centre as head of their diagnostic department, and this year will travel to Rio as part of the veterinary team for the Australian Olympic Equestrian contingent. Penny gave a wonderful speech, reminiscing about her wonderful time in Pony Club. There were many nominations from throughout Australia for all categories, so to have all three Tasmanian nominees announced as one of three finalists in their respective categories was a great achievement for such a small State. Congratulations to all!
3 June 2016 Page 3 DC s Report ROYAL HOBART SHOW The information has been ed out. Please consider talking to your friends and putting forward a team of three, a games team or joining the show jumping team. It really is such an honour to be part of the Royal, and Huntingfield has a strong history at this event. 8 Page 8 Huntingfield Hoofbeats Huon 3/4/5 Unofficial ODE ROYAL HOBART SHOW As usual, Huntingfield will be entering Club Teams as follows (all on Thursday): Two out of three of the team events contribute to the Charlton Shield (Team of Three and/or Games and/or SJ) TEAM OF THREE (x3 riders) This is super fun and such a great experience. It is a flat workout (three of you at the same time, a set workout), and you are scored on your workout, as well as your overall presentation. Last year we were pipped at the post by Deloraine (on presentation points only), so we re keen to get our Crown back this year! So guys start to think about a team three of you with horses of same colour (eg three black, three chestnut etc), or a mixed coloured team (ie two blacks and a grey, etc). Similar size looks good too. Your horse will need to be able to work well with the other horses in the team. Your tack, gear, uniform etc will all need to match perfectly and be immaculate. How about we get some Huntingfield brow bands made up too? So get thinking about what you can do, and who you can beg, borrow and steal from! Full Pony Club Formal Uniform required. TEAM SHOW JUMPING (x4 riders) Maximum starting height is 90cm, it is a two round championship (second round maximum 1m) You must be qualified to enter this (ie completed two SJ competitions at no less than 90cm in the previous 12 months). Best 3 scores count. Full Pony Club Formal Uniform required. TEAM GAMES (x4 riders) Games: Bending, Sword, 5 Flag, 2 Flag, Canadian Sack, Rope race, Sock, Ball & Bucket. Pony Club Active Riding Uniform (Polo / rugby) We can enter more than one team for each class, so get involved! Let me know if you need any help or have any questions. ALL TEM ENTRIES to come through Sam by Wednesday 31 st August please: Samantha.todd@utas.edu.au
