1 March 2016 Huntingfield Hoofbeats Huntingfield Pony and Riding Club Inc PCT Trials Mighty Huntingfield! Inside this issue: PCT Trials 1-3 February Rally 4 Dressage/SJ day 7 Games Update 8 Canteen Roster 8 For Sale 9 Pony Club Profiles 10 After another busy season, the 2016 State Eventing Championships (Trials) was held over the March long weekend, hosted by the North West Zone in Wynyard. A total of 17 riders / 20 horses successfully qualified, which was a fantastic effort. There were the usual scratchings (bugger), but we still ended up with an impressive team. After a 5-6 hour journey, we set up base camp on a gorgeous property at Moorleah (in the bushfire area of the Lapoinya surprisingly it was lush and green up there!). Dressage was held on Saturday at Inglis Pony Club grounds, followed by the official Trials Dinner for riders, under the supervision of their very responsible DC, whilst the parents headed off to Boat Harbour for a child-free evening. Sunday brought with it more sunshine, a perfect day for Cross Country. The course was delightful, on a dairy farm in Murdering Gully Rd (yes, it s really called that!), a true cross country course lush, green & natural, with rolling (aka steep!) hills. The horses handled it really well, as did the riders, and there were lots of clear rounds, although some a little fast! Monday began bright and early with a Horse Inspection being held for the first time, commencing at 7.30am! Then came the final part of the competition Show Jumping. Results were tight and everyone held their breath during the final grade one rounds, which were thrilling as we saw poles drop and the leader board change with every rail! The event culminated with the ever-impressive mounted presentations, where Huntingfield achieved some great results, including: Grade 1 Junior Champion (Sasha) Grade 2 Senior Champion (Brook) Grade 2 Teams 2 nd (Brook, Phoebe, Dannielle, Kate) & 4 th (Isobella, Isobel, Maddy, Olivia) Grade 3 Junior Champion (Sasha) Fairlands Trophy Most Successful Club Over All 3 Grades Grade 3 Summers Hall Estate Trophy Overall Winning Grade 3 Team (Amy, Sasha, Esther) Continued page 2
2 Page 2 Huntingfield Hoofbeats Trials 2016 cont d And numerous other placings and personal best achievements. Most importantly, everyone returned home safe and sound! Thank you to our team coaches Liz, Gibbo & Meegan, and special thanks to Gibbo for making the journey for us, your presence and help was deeply appreciated. Also thanks to the parents and other supporters who also made the big trip, it was great to have you all there. To every single one of our competitors, congratulations! I remind you all to never lose sight of the big picture it s not all about winning the ribbons or trophies, it s about the everyday achievements and improvements, the character building and resilience, the team spirit and comradery. You all did an exceptional job, and conducted yourselves beautifully. We are exceptionally proud of each and every one of you. Can t wait til 2017 Trials! 10 Page 10 Huntingfield Hoofbeats Mark Burgess Committee Member Mark grew up on a cattle and apple farm in the Huon. Whilst he does not describe himself as a rider, his childhood was surrounded by his father s draught horses. It was these childhood stories that inspired daughter Evee to take up horse riding. They moved to 5 acres in Leslie Vale and their horse owning life began. Mark is a facilities manage for UTAS. When he is not at pony club doing maintenance on the cross country course, he is a keen adventurer with bushwalking, bike riding and ultra marathon running, with travel to remote places part of the mix. As part of the committee he is involved in the grant to get the new middle arena, the emergency response plan and strategizing for upgrades to the cross country course. Hamish Burge Hamish is 10 years old and has been riding since he was 4. His pony is Skipper, a young 28 year old pony club veteran who was once a mount for Hamish s mum. The ex-huon rider loves having a cross country course at pony club but says his favourite pony activity is show jumping. He has the occasional lesson at Kyalami Equestrian. Hamish lives near Grove and attends St Aloysius. He also enjoys playing soccer and is a bit of an all-rounder.
