2 1. INTRODUCTION The Gauteng Climbing Committee welcomes you to the 2018 Gauteng NBL Finals. 2. PUNCTUALITY Please bear in mind that the competition will run according to a strict timetable, therefore kindly allow enough time for travel delays. 3. DIRECTIONS TO THE VENUE From Pretoria: Head east out of Pretoria on the R104 (Stanza Bopape St). After the Botanical Gardens it becomes Pretoria St. The Boulder Cave is approximately 1.5km further east on the left-hand side. From Johannesburg: Head north along the N1 and then take the N4 east to Witbank / Emahahleni. Take exit 3 (M14/Watermeyer St), 1st left onto M16, 1 st right into Onida Ave and after approximately 900m right into Pretoria St. The Boulder Cave is approximately 450m further on left hand side. STRUCTURE OF EVENTS a) GENERAL Bouldering competitions consist of a series of short problems, called boulders. All boulders shall be climbed without ropes. The maximum number of handholds for one boulder shall be 12 and the average number of handholds for the boulders in one round shall be between 4 and 8. The results of the Gauteng Boulder Final will be one of the inputs used by the selections panel when determining those athletes that will represent Gauteng at the National Competition to be held at the end of June Page 3 of 5

4 b) ISOLATION i. No competing athlete may enter The Boulder Cave facility from Wednesday 11 April ii. iii. iv. All athletes will remain in isolation prior to their competing. No athlete is permitted any mobile phone or communication device during isolation or climbing. No audio equipment is permitted during climbing. c) THE COMPETITION FORMAT i. Each boulder shall be attempted by all competitors in the starting order stipulated. ii. The starting order will be randomised. iii. Competitors will be in isolation prior to the start of their round. They may not view the problems other than during the designated 8 minute observation time (2 minutes per problem). Once they have started their round they will not be allowed back into isolation. Failure to adhere to the isolation rules may result in the competitor being disqualified. iv. The competition will consist of a final only consisting of 4 boulders. v. Competitors have 4 minutes to complete each boulder problem with 4 minutes rest time before attempting the next boulder problem. The competitor continues until all 4 problems have been attempted. vi. A touch of the hold or a mat foot dab (however slight) constitutes an attempt. d) SCORING Scores for rankings are calculated according to and in order of: i. The number of Tops (T); ii. iii. iv. The number of zones (previously referred to as bonus) (Z); The fewest attempts to Top; The fewest attempts to zones (Z). The jury of each boulder shall consist of a Judge and a Scorer. Each boulder shall have a pre-designated starting position which shall consist of both hands and both feet, i.e. all four appendages, in fixed starting positions. 5 shall be clearly marked. At the discretion of the Chief Routesetter the pre-designated starting holds may be labelled left and right. One bonus point will be awarded for holding a specific hold (the zone) on the problem. The positioning of this hold will be at the Routesetter s discretion. This hold shall be clearly marked. If a competitor successfully completes a problem they will be regarded as having reached the bonus hold or zone even if they did not physically touch the hold.. The top of the boulder may be specified by either: the attainment with both hands on a finishing hold. This hold shall be clearly marked; OR as a standing position on the top of the boulder. The markings used in shall be the same for the entire duration of a competition. The colours used for the starting positions and the finishing holds shall be the same. A different colour shall be used for the zones (bonus holds). Both colours shall be different from the colour used for demarcation. 7. SAFETY For safety reasons, boulders: a) shall be protected by landing mats. It is the responsibility of the organiser to position the mats and to adjust the number and character of the boulders to the mats available. If mats are joined, the gaps shall be covered to avoid that competitors can fall in between them; b) shall be made in such a way that the lowest part of the body of the competitor shall never be higher than 3 metres above the landing mat; c) shall not be designed with downward jumps.
