6 What is the Glenn Hourigan Cup? The Glenn Hourigan Cup (GHC) contest began in following the great success of the annual Ross Turner Cup (RTC) fixture, which was inaugurated in to promote an opportunity for our best junior players to appear in a showcase game of high level representative cricket. The idea developed from the work of the Northern Metropolitan Cricket Council (NMCC) in the 1990 s, which brought together representatives of grade, shires, district and school local cricket organisations to achieve mutual benefit by working in close collaboration. The RTC and GHC matches were the brainchild of Tom Richmond OAM, Patron and Life Member of HK&HDCA, who passed the responsibility after 11 years of sterling service to Bruce Wood, President of HKHDCCA (Coaches Association) in , who has maintained the fine tradition and also introduced some new initiatives, including the GHC T20s and the appointment of young coaches. The NMCC also recognised that cricket needs to be played in the true spirit of the game and enjoyed by all participants, in a competitive and healthy environment. The Council took proactive steps in conjunction with the local cricket bodies to achieve this objective. Since the origins of the RTC and GHC matches, emphasis has always been placed on respect for the opposition, the umpires and the laws of the game, ie. the spirit of cricket, which is now incorporated in the preamble to the MCC Laws of Cricket by the world s governing body. It is worth noting that the current organiser of the annual RTC and GHC events, Bruce Wood, also holds similar views on how cricket should be played. Bruce donated an impressive perpetual trophy in on behalf of the Umpires Association entitled HKHDCUA Spirit of Cricket Award for representative cricket in order to promote excellent sportsmanship by our cricketers. One of the objectives was to accelerate the career paths of our outstanding young cricketers by the earlier identification of players with talent and commitment, in order to provide high level coaching and development opportunities for these players. It was hoped that many of these players would successfully progress through the HK&HDCA Shield junior representative teams; play Green Shield and Grade Cricket with Northern District CC; or A Grade within the HK&HDCA Senior Competition. It is important that HK&HDCA maintains close ties with its local grade club, Northern District CC at Waitara, as our Association provides a pathway for talented players to progress through to Green Shield and Grade cricket. NDCC officials have regularly attended RTC and/or GHC matches since their inception on talent scouting missions. The positive efforts of HKHDCCA in conducting successful junior cricket clinics in the school holidays in conjunction with NDCC is further fostering a strong link with our local grade club. Today s GHC (50 over) match brings together the leading U/13, U/12 & U/11 players in the district in teams which roughly represent the eastern and western halves of the Association. The teams have been selected on the basis of performances throughout the previous season, mainly in representative cricket, however outstanding form in the preliminary GHC T20 matches was also taken into account. The RTC and GHC matches are being played as pre-season events for the first time in after the scheduled March date had been washed out 3 years in a row since The matches will again be played concurrently on adjacent ovals at Turramurra, which is appreciated by parents with a son playing in each match, as well as HK&HDCA officials and guests. The players shirts have again been kindly provided by our generous sponsor, Triforce Sports Pty Ltd (Abbas Aly). Thanks also to HK&HDCA sponsors, Kookaburra Sport (Cameron Eve) for supplying the match balls and prizes. I m sure all the players and spectators will thoroughly enjoy today s contest.
7 Glenn Hourigan (HK&HDCA Life Member) Glenn Hourigan was the Association s Representative Secretary from 1988 to During that period HK&HDCA won the U/19 Durham Shield twice, the Martin Shield, the U/15 Weblin Shield and the Girls U/14 representative competition. Glenn s connection with the Association began when his son was playing, but continued long afterwards. His contribution to rep. cricket within our Association was enormous, covering our participation in all NSWDCA Shield competitions. He also championed the entry of development teams in the IDCA competitions (now known as the President s Cup). Glenn used to be involved in numerous coaching initiatives, including the significant Northern Cricket programs that led the way many years ago. He contributed massively to organising competent coaching and management of our inter-district representative teams. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of the girls cricket competitions that were emerging at the time. Glenn has always been concerned about the need for all players to be given the maximum of opportunity and a fair go, both in representative selection trials and in matches. He holds the view that if we can do this for the young players, the rest is up to them. He always had a soft spot for the battler and encouraged cricket development at all levels of ability. Glenn is a person who speaks his mind and who gives credit where it is due. He has been a constant voice demanding the development of young players as a means of securing the future of this great game of ours. He sees cricket as part of the Australian way of life and a basic right in this country for all young people. No-one has ever taken greater pride in our Association or worked harder for its representative teams than Glenn, who was inducted as a Life Member of HK&HDCA in Glenn continues to take a keen interest in cricket and we are delighted that he and his wife Margaret will be in attendance at today s match. It is always terrific to see them back at HK&HDCA events. Umpires for today s Glenn Hourigan Cup match Experienced umpires, Alf James OAM and Kieran Canavan, have again been appointed to officiate today s GHC match. Alf should need no introduction to most people within the cricket community, being a Life Member of both HK&HDCA and the NSWDCA, and a past President of our Association for 22 years ( ). He holds the distinction of being the only player in HK&HDCA history to score over 10,000 runs and take in excess of 1,000 wickets in the local Senior Competition. Kieran is President of Kissing Point CC and has a reputation for being a very effective and fair-minded cricket official and umpire. He umpired the GHC T20 matches with Bruce Wood at Foxglove Oval on Sunday, 8 th September 2013 and is looking forward to the main contest today.

16 Role of HKHDCCA The Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Coaches Association Inc. (HKHDCCA) was established in 2010 and is responsible for: raising the profile of coaching and giving coaches a collective voice within the Association; promoting the objective that all club & representative coaches attain the Level 1 accreditation as a minimum (Rep. Shield coaches Level 2 preferably); enhancing the development of accredited coaches and facilitating a future pathway for club & rep. coaches; organising Junior Cricket Clinics in partnership with Northern District CC during the September / October and January school holidays; planning and implementing a structured off-season development coaching program (6 dates) for the U/10 and U/11 age groups, focusing on skill development in the important transition phase from soft to hard ball cricket; implementing a more advanced specialist coaching program during the off-season at James Park, designed for teenagers and representative players on batting, pace & spin bowling; fielding & wicket-keeping skills; providing HKHDCCA members with professional coaching opportunities at our Junior Cricket Clinics with Northern District CC and at the HKHDCCA off-season specialist sessions and junior development programs; co-ordinating the annual Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup intra-association representative fixtures; conducting an annual Community Level 1 accredited coaching course for HK&HDCA & NDCC members; administering a scholarship scheme designed to provide financial assistance to a limited number of candidates nominated to attend a Cricket NSW accredited coaching course (Level 1, 2 or 3); conducting a free annual pre-season coaching session for beginners to cricket (U/8 & older), including players transitioning from their club s Kanga / In2Cricket / Milo programs to regular club cricket competitions; recognising excellence in club & rep. coaching through our annual Coach of Year award (Bruce Wood Cup); providing a mentor service to coaches as required, especially new or young coaches seeking guidance; seeking Grant opportunities to provide additional funding to expand and further subsidise our coaching programs, and also purchase additional equipment as required; conducting free coaching sessions for Blowfly Cricket (children with special needs such as autism); assisting the HK&HDCA Rep. Secretary with coaching matters relating to the representative teams; enabling the Association to maintain a record of all Level 1, 2 & 3 accredited coaches within the district. Bruce Wood has performed the role of HKHDCCA President since and is currently supported by Justin Epthorp as Vice-President, Josh Miller as Secretary, Rod Hokin as Head Coach, and Will Fiedler as the new Treasurer. HKHDCCA is honoured to have Ross Turner, Tom Richmond OAM and Matt Kean MP as our Patrons again in 2013/14. Ross Turner played his early cricket with Pennant Hills CC in the HK&HDCA junior competition before moving on to captain the Northern District CC First Grade team to two premierships. He has undertaken a range of important cricket roles within Australia and overseas, as briefly outlined on page 6 of this program. Tom Richmond OAM has coached cricket for an incredible 50 years, including approximately 16 years as the HK&HDCA Watson Shield coach and NDCC Green Shield coach. He pioneered the RTC & GHC fixtures. Matt Kean MP is the Member for Hornsby and a keen, talented cricketer in his own right. He has been very supportive of the endeavours of HKHDCCA and kindly supports our Government Grant applications. HKHDCCA conducted three successful coaching clinics during the January 2013 school holidays at Kenthurst Park and Mark Taylor Oval, Waitara, with 160 keen, young cricketers in attendance (a record for HKHDCCA). The accredited coaches engaged at the clinics included Rod Hokin (Head Coach), Bruce Wood (Co-ordinator), Justin Epthorp (all Level 2); Josh Miller, Dave Lowery, Chris Burnett, Daniel Wood, Will Fiedler, Daniel Anderson, Nathan Tanner, James Madden and Braden Cheng (Level 1 coaches). HKHDCCA is also providing other coaching opportunities for some outstanding young players / coaches, with Will Fiedler and Sujith Dissanayake coaching the RTC teams, and John Anderson, Daniel Heidegger, Alex Dolly & Matt McVay coaching the GHC teams in HKHDCCA is delighted to be able to provide special coaching opportunities for these talented and enthusiastic young cricketers, many of whom will go on to coach HK&HDCA rep. teams in future years (if not already), as well as coaching at HKHDCCA clinics. HKHDCCA has organised two pre-season junior cricket clinics during the next school holidays (25, 26 & 27 September 2013) at Mark Taylor Oval, Waitara (sold out) and Montview Oval, Hornsby Heights (see website).
17 Results from Glenn Hourigan Cup T20 matches Preliminary GHC T20 matches were played between four (U/13 to U/11) teams on Sunday, 8 th September 2013 at Foxglove Oval, Mt Colah. All teams played two T20 matches under the guidance of four young Watson Shield / Green Shield coaches (Alex Dolly, John Anderson, Daniel Heidegger and Matt McVay). The coaches did a terrific job and were very well received by the GHC players. The umpires were Bruce Wood (event organiser) and Kieran Canavan. Special thanks to Peter Heidegger, our RTC / GHC photographer for 2013/14. The T20 games provided increased participation, with 48 players actively involved, plus they helped to identify suitable players for the main GHC match on 22 nd September. The T20 matches were a great success with positive feedback received from the players, parents and officials present. The four T20 teams are listed below.
