NATHAN TILBURY PRESIDENT Cricket participation numbers tend to follow the success of the national team. Coming into the 2011/12 summer the Aussies were not doing so well and as such most cricket Associations across Sydney and NSW were suffering from declining numbers. I am very pleased to say the HK&HDCA bucked the trend in 2011/12. In fact we welcomed four new clubs to our ranks in Ku-ringgai District, North Shore, Epping and Wahroonga Juniors taking us to a total of 21 clubs. We enjoyed a 5% growth in our seniors to reach a record equalling 82 teams across all 10 grades. This obviously shows we are getting many things right in our Association. However this recent growth has also highlighted the single biggest challenge facing our Association today, grounds. Over the winter your Executive with other local cricket brethren, engaged in a battle to retain two turf pitch squares that Hornsby Shire Council slated for removal to save $40K in annual maintenance costs. Despite our considerable efforts, these two turf wickets were removed and although the grounds are located outside the HK&HDCA boundaries, as a result of the reshuffle, HK&HDCA lost more than 50% use of our oldest turf ground in Storey Park. In addition to this throughout the cricket season, together with local residents, we fought another battle with Ku-ring-gai Municipal Council, as two private schools (Knox and Abbotsleigh) worked towards turning another valuable turf wicket ground we use, The Glade, into a fully synthetic athletics facility for their private use. This would prevent cricket from being played in any form on this ground that we have had for use by our top senior grades and representative teams since it opened in This battle is ongoing. For our lower grade senior cricketers unfortunately some were forced to play their cricket on Sundays as well as some of our junior cricketers being forced to play in the afternoons because of a lack of grounds available to us. This also hinders further growth in future years unless addressed now. I would like to stress to our member clubs and their players that your Executive consider our current lack of grounds situation completely unacceptable and we will be working hard to address these issues leading up to 2012/13 and beyond. We will be working closely with the three local Councils in our area to hopefully bring new cricket grounds on line for our use. Working with these Councils we have already identified a number of potential new sites for grounds throughout the Association, so there is certainly the possibility of new cricket grounds available for us very soon. We will also continue to work with schools to partner development of potential new cricket fields within their grounds, although this method often requires significant financial outlay from us to initiate. One piece of good news on this subject is that we did gain full access to Cheltenham Oval for the first time in about 75 years. As well as this, a new sportsground in John Purchase located in Cherrybrook (suitable for juniors only) came on line towards the end of the season. Both these grounds helped balance out the deficiencies and are located in areas where they are badly required. I must thank Hornsby Shire Council staff for their excellent efforts in preparing quality pitches for our senior and our U/16 and U/15 junior finals. This included access to Mark Taylor Oval at Waitara in March, which helped set the scene for a great A grade final. Ku-ring-gai Municipal Council and Baulkham Hills Shire Council also made available their turf wickets, although the pitch quality wasn t as good. The week leading up to both the junior and seniors finals was very much against the trend of the summer with excellent weather. This meant we had some fantastic and high scoring deciders. We played all our senior finals on turf wickets with the exception of our D2 grade, which played their final at Cheltenham Oval. Congratulations to all the Premiers and a special mention to the Sydney Lions club who secured their first silverware in only their second season with us. They were joint Premiers in the D1 grade after recording a tie with Kissing Point in their exciting final at Turramurra Oval. Sadly in January this year we lost HK&HDCA Life Member in George Pennicook MBE. George s obituary is detailed later in this report. Tragically Hornsby Shire Council lost one of their key staff who was killed in a work related accident at Fagan Park during the summer. Warren Southwell was a true professional who was very energetic and extremely efficient. It was a pleasure to work with in the many dealings the cricket community had with him. He was just a great guy and we have lost a true friend to cricket who is sorely missed. Back on the field and couple of outstanding efforts with the bat during the season were Rob HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 5

PRESIDENT S REPORT: CONTINUED Barker s 231 for Redfield U/15 against WPHC at Greenway Oval and Mt Colah s Sam Every, who hit 244 against Berowra in the Kookaburra Cup (A2) Final at Asquith Park. Both efforts were extraordinary in a season often difficult for batsmen. They are two very young and emerging cricketers in our Association. A wonderful piece of recognition for one of our Patrons in Denise Annetts (Anderson), who was inducted into the Cricket NSW Hall of Fame in March. In being inducted Denise was in fine company with Doug Walters and Fred Spofforth, which is a clear indication of how high her achievements in women s cricket are held. Our congratulations to her for this wonderful award. The success of our Coaches Association rolled on as they completed their second season. President, Bruce Wood and his growing team of quality coaches held popular cricket clinics during the school holidays and a terrific U/10 off-season development program. The kids loved the clinics and the parents were also extremely happy as they could see the wonderful value for money they are getting. HKHDCCA also conducted a highly successful day at Kenthurst Park in March when they staged the showcase Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup representative fixtures on adjacent ovals. Another success story from the summer was the club junior parent umpire courses that were held preseason. Our two Vice Presidents and senior umpires, Barry McDonald and Geoff Hasler, took their road show across the Association over a number of weeks. The substantial feedback as to the difference this has made to our junior games has HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 6 been tremendous. A number of our Association s affiliate members were lucky enough to benefit from Community Building Partnership (State Government) grants at different levels; Our Coaches Association received $5K to assist their development. The West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook cricket club received nearly $10K for repairs and improvements to both Cherrybrook Public School and Oakhill Public School cricket nets. Berowra CC received $40K to replace the old nets at Berowra Public School. In the case of the two club grants, it allows these clubs to work closely with local schools to ensure they have quality cricket facilities for their students which are also available to the cricket club members in several of the most densely populated areas of our Association for cricket. Our thanks to Hornsby State MP, HK&HDCA Patron and occasional player Matt Kean, as well as Castle Hill State MP, Dominic Perrottet, for recognizing these projects and the need for their support. I must mention our four very generous 2011/12 sponsors who are really partners rather than sponsors. We developed strong relationships with all four throughout the summer and look forward to further doing so next season. Kookaburra Sports continue to support our Association and clubs by alleviating the significant costs of balls through their generous rebate plan. They also support our Kookaburra Rising Star award by providing kits for the various winners and of course this season they supported our second highest grade, for which the minor premiership trophy is in their name, The Kookaburra Cup. Triforce Sports have been with us now for 3 seasons supporting HK&HDCA in a number of areas. For this we sincerely thank Abbas and his team. Triforce supported our first Triforce Cup competition which was a T20 day involving a team from each for the top four placed clubs in the senior Club Championship the previous season. These four teams played some terrific cricket at the Montview grounds the week before the season officially started. WPHC defeated Kissing Point in the final. Kooindah Waters first 18 months sponsoring the HK&HDCA has been extremely beneficial for both parties. On 24 February 2012, Geoff Hasler organised a very well attended HK&HDCA golf day at Kooindah Waters. The weather was fantastic and all who attended had a great day. It was an easy decision by Geoff to turn this into an annual event so get in quick when the 2012/13 golf day is announced shortly as I know the limited spots will disappear quickly. Kooindah are always keen to support our clubs with raffle prizes or hosting events so let me know if you or your club can benefit. Hornsby RSL is our most recent sponsor coming on board in August Along with their financial support the RSL has provided us with a much more comfortable location to hold meetings giving us a home base centrally located in our Association boundaries. On behalf of the HK&HDCA I sincerely thank all our sponsors for their support and look forward to enjoying with them an even bigger and better 2012/13. As we all remember the summer of 2011/12 was a very wet one that

PRESIDENT S REPORT: CONTINUED affected all areas of our cricket. None more so than our A grade who lost plenty of match time through washouts. However our premier competition was very closely contested and the most exciting for many years. The eventual finalists in WPHC and ARL fought out a tense battle at the newly named Mark Taylor Oval (previously Waitara Oval) and in the end it was WPHC who ran out victors, ending an incredible six year run by ARL. This is a terrific record from Steve Loccisano s team who really raised the bar, forcing all other A grade teams to perform at a higher level just to compete. I have no doubt that as a direct result of their dominance it has raised the quality of cricket played in the HK&HDCA A grade competition significantly. It was always going to take a special team to stop ARL s run and the 2011/12 WPHC A grade team are certainly that. In addition winning the A grade competition, they took out the A grade Minor Premiership, the pre-season Triforce Cup and the 1st grade T20 competition, to win everything they competed in. Sixteen year old member of this WPHC A grade team, Daniel Anderson, recorded some amazing achievements which are detailed later in this annual report. I should mention that the ARL club, who had held our A grade premiership trophy for so long, instigated the refurbishment of this wonderful T.E. Rofe Shield. Given the enormous size and age of the shield, this was not an easy nor inexpensive exercise for the HK&HDCA. However the end result is a very impressive shield which is certainly worthy for our premier competition. We intend to continue this process with refurbishment and repairs to our lower grade senior grade premiership trophies, as well as our junior competition trophies in coming seasons. We started the season with many changes at the HK&HDCA Executive level including a new President, Treasurer, Representative Secretary, Umpires Secretary and Senior Competition Co ordinator. I must thank our Senior Vice President, Geoff Hasler, for stepping in to guide the Senior Competition Committee (along with his many other roles) this season. I would like to thank Tim Davidson, the Umpires Association s Treasurer, for also taking on the role of HK&HDCA Treasurer. His professional work in bringing our financial situation back under control is much appreciated. This work took a significant amount of Tim s time over the Christmas break, for which we are extremely grateful. With our new Representative Secretary, Abbas Aly, we did enjoy great success. Abbas is better known as our generous sponsor through Triforce Sports and this season he volunteered to wear another big hat by taking on the daunting and challenging role of running our junior reps. Through this role he implemented a lot of significant changes to our representative program, for which we will be significantly better off for many seasons to come. It is one thing to talk about positive change and new ideas but another to actually be able to successfully implement these things. The results speak for themselves as we enjoyed one of our best ever seasons at representative level, winning three shields including the Moore Shield (U/14) and defending our Weblin Shield (U/15) premiership. The pressure will be on Abbas and his team as they try and replicate this success next season. I have every confidence they will once again do a great job to give our teams every chance of on-field success at this highest level of competition available to our talented junior cricketers. In senior reps we also tasted success through our sole team entered this season. The Telegraph Shield (U/23) went through undefeated to take out the silverware at that level as well. My thanks must go to Justin Epthorp for his support with this squad ensuring they had the best possible team each round and everything required. The great news is most of this Telegraph Shield squad are eligible again next season. Extra attention will be given to senior reps for the coming season in an attempt to also field teams in the Durham (U/19) and Martin (open age) shields. Our Junior competitions went very well despite being forced to declare joint premiers in our U/14 competition due to a date clash between the HK&HDCA Final and a Cricket NSW T20 Final at the SCG. This was the only hiccup and we are already working towards a way of avoiding this problem in future seasons. As always, well done to Bruce Kimberley and his team. Our relationship with our local grade club, Northern Districts, continues to strengthen. We were invited to play a significant role in their big day when they renamed Waitara Oval, Mark Taylor Oval in November The majority of our talented young cricketers use NDs as their first port of call as they look to further their cricketing progress through (U/16) Green Shield and/or Grade cricket. We also established and developed very good relationships with the HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 7

PRESIDENT S REPORT: CONTINUED two local Shires clubs in Pennant Hills and Epping. For too many years we have bickered with these clubs about all sorts of things. However we now understand how each of us, together with Northern District CC, play our part in the local cricket scene and how we will achieve so much more individually and collectively on friendly terms than we ever will working against each other. At the end of the 2011/12 season, Ben Gussey, our Executive Officer, announced he had secured full time employment and would have to finish up in his role with the HK&HDCA. Ben had been our Executive Officer for three and a half years having pioneered the role and really embracing the Executive Officer responsibilities wholeheartedly. He put his own personal stamp on a number of key areas, particularly our impressive website, Annual Reports, On the Ball Newsletters, sponsorship development and general promotion of the HK&HDCA. It has been a pleasure working with Ben and we wish him all the best in his new position. The good news is he will still be around the Association in other capacities allowing us to continue to tap into his many talents. I must also thank Ben s dad, Bob Gussey, who has ensured a smooth transition with Ben moving on, covering us with many of the post-season details that may have otherwise slipped through the cracks. I am extremely pleased to say we now have a new Executive Officer in Justin Epthorp who comes to us with a wealth of experience in our Association at so many different levels, which is quite extraordinary for someone so young. We are indeed fortunate to have found such a quality replacement for Ben who many of us thought would be irreplaceable in that Executive Officer role. Fortunately we had a minimal number of senior players cited to appear before the D&D Panel this season. I thank our competent Chairperson, Geoff Finlay, for his astute management of this process. I like to thank HK&HDCA Life Members Alf James OAM and Tom Richmond OAM for their support through last season. It didn t matter what problem the Association was faced with, Alf and Tom, having been around the HK&HDCA for so long, had almost certainly been through it themselves before. It was certainly great to be able to call on so much experience in my first year as President. Finally I d like to thank my fellow HK&HDCA Executive Committee members. It was a challenging but rewarding season and with that now behind us we have some solid foundations in place that make me very excited going into 2012/13. HK&HDCA U/10 off-season development program The Coaches Association conducted an innovative U/10 development program at James Park, Hornsby, during the 2011 off-season to provide properly structured coaching to assist the youngsters in their transition from soft to hard ball cricket. Five coaching sessions were held on Sundays 29 May, 19 June, 31 July, 14 August & 4 September 2011, with a total attendance of 252 boys (average over 50 per session). The significant improvement across this entry level age group to representative cricket led to the HK&HDCA Foster Shield team qualifying for the finals for the first time in over a decade. A similar program will be conducted during the 2012 off-season. Ross Turner Cup / Glenn Hourigan Cup The Coaches Association again organised the annual RTC and GHC fixtures, our showcase HK&HDCA junior representative events. A successful T20 day was held for the GHC U/13 & below age groups on Sunday, 19 February at Montview Oval, Hornsby Heights. Four teams (48 players) participated in these preliminary GHC T20 matches, following which the best 24 players were selected for the main GHC match. The 50 over RTC and GHC matches took place on Sunday 18 March 2012 at Kenthurst Park (No. 1 & 2 ovals). Both matches were high level contests, with the RTC teams mainly comprising players from the HK&HDCA U/15 Weblin Shield and U/14 Moore Shield NSWDCA premiership teams in HKHDCCA provided coaching opportunities for some outstanding young coaches, with Daniel Anderson, Josh Miller & Justin Epthorp coaching the RTC teams, and Utkarsh Somaiya, Luke Thorburn, Will Johnston & Matt Vile coaching the GHC teams in 2012 (including the T20 s). HK&HDCA sponsors, Triforce Sports, supplied cricket shirts for the players and coaches; and Kooindah Waters supplied prizes (complimentary rounds of golf). 14 WORKING WITH HKHDCUA The season started with our AGM in August, 2011 where Geoff Hasler was elected as President, Bruce Wood Vice-President, Steve Wilson Secretary, Tim Davidson Treasurer whilst Barry McDonald, Darren Goodger (NSW), and John McQuillan were elected as Patrons of HKHDCUA for the 2011/12 season. There were no less than 272 appointments fulfilled throughout the season which is amazing given the wet weather and washouts we endured. This was the second highest set of appointments recorded. My thanks go to all our regular umpires who umpired so consistently and well throughout the season. As a group, the My Cricket scores from the captains in A grade and Kookaburra Cup were excellent an overall score of 4.39 for decision making and 4.62 overall (out of 5). The winning WPHC A grade captain made special mention of the standard of umpiring he witnessed throughout the season and said the umpires are in a good place at the moment. This was a wonderful reflection of how well we did as a group congratulations to all on an excellent season. The workload was shared really well as indicated by the individual appointments. Ian Lewis showed the way with 25 appointments (thanks Ian), followed by Steve Wilson 24, Barry McDonald 23, Geoff Hasler 20, Damien Lewis 18, John McQuillan and Simon Moore 17, Scott Burrows 16, Bruce Wood 14, Alf James (OAM) 13, Kieran Canavan 13, Steve Thomson 12, Col Griffin and Brent Hartland 11, Scott Reid 9, Tim Creamer 7, Tim Davidson 4 and our part timers who helped us out in the semifinals and finals HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 14 A special mention is extended to Col Griffin who became our 9th umpire to record his century of matches umpiring in HK&HDCA since records began in 1999/2000 and to Steve Wilson who became our 3rd umpire to bring up 200 matches as an umpire in the HK&HDCA. The honour of doing the A grade Final this year went to the experienced Geoff Hasler (244 matches) and Steve Wilson (221 matches) whilst our Patron, Barry McDonald and Tim Creamer had the honour of umpiring the premier juniors Under 16 grade Final and also the A grades T20 final at the start of the season. Geoff Hasler was joined by Bruce Wood in doing the Ross Turner Cup and Alf James (OAM) and Kieran Canavan did a great job umpiring the Glenn Turner Cup and also the Sunday One-Day Competition Final. Congratulations to all on your appointments. I d like to also make a special mention of the performances of our newer umpires who did so well this season. Damien Lewis and Steve Thomson umpired really well and got great reports culminating in them doing the B-Reserves Final whilst Scott Burrows in his first year as an HK&HDCA umpire was rewarded with the A-Reserves final appointment with Barry. The season started on a high when Geoff and Barry developed and presented an Umpires Development Program for managers and coaches for all junior clubs. Assistance was given by several senior umpires who attended junior matches and passed on tips to officials, players, parents and supporters. The concept was overwhelmingly embraced and proved to be most popular. Well done to all especially Geoff and Barry for a wonderful initiative. 74 persons successfully completed the HK&HDCA Captains Ticket and my thanks is extended to all who ran and participated in this successful program. During the season we had the pleasure of refining some of our skills when another of our Patrons, Darren Goodger (NSW Umpires Education & Development Manager) joined us to take us through several key aspects of umpiring. It was a great evening and let s hope we can make this a regular event as the feedback received was excellent. Thanks very much for your time Darren. The Spirit of Cricket awards were won by the HK&DCA Foster Shield team for Representative teams whilst the Mt Colah Kookaburra Cup team culminated a great year for themselves by being successful in the HK&HDCA senior grades. Congratulations to both teams on their great display of sportsmanship. In summary, the HKHDCUA has enjoyed an outstanding season and I can t thank everyone enough for their support and commitment. I look forward to the 2012/13 season being even bigger and better for HKHDCUA. STEVE WILSON HKHDCUA SECRETARY

WORKING WITH BLOWFLY CRICKET The Blowfly Cricket 2011/12 season has been a wonderfully successful one to date. The many highlights for the season include: 1. The once in a lifetime SCG experience on Wednesday January 4th, where our hearty band of players, siblings, coaches and parents were able to join in the Milo in2cricket on-field activities during the lunch break of the Australia vs. India 2nd Test mind you, in front of 30,000+ spectators; 2. A much closer working relationship with CNSW who have been extremely supportive and generous in providing Milo in2cricket equipment for our Centre and also the children involved; 3. The Incorporation of Blowfly Cricket, and the hard working Executive who s collective efforts do not go unnoticed; 4. The support of local cricket clubs including: St Ives CC, Wahroonga Juniors CC, and Castle Hill RSL CC; 5. The support of the Commonwealth Bank where we were so fortunate in securing a Grassroots grant including $ worth of equipment and $1, cash grant; 6. The ongoing support and kindness of Abbas Aly (Triforce Sports); and 7. The generous support of many individuals in the Sponsor a Child program what fantastic gestures of kindness and good will. Mission Statement To promote Blowfly Cricket as the summer sport for children and young people between the ages of 5 and 18 years who have special needs by: a) Providing the opportunity for each participant to learn and develop the skills associated with the game of cricket in a constructive and positive setting. b) Establishing an environment for each family member to enjoy their involvement in the game, including coaching, umpiring, administration and support. c) Encouraging all participants to realise their own potential in, and enjoyment of, cricket. d) Enabling carers, parents and siblings the opportunity to share interests in the game and interacting with other participating families; and e) Fostering relationships with mainstream and adult cricket, in order for players with disabilities to be provided with clearly defined pathways to National and International representation in cricket, for players as the sport develops. What is the longer term benefit to the sport, community or industry? It is difficult to imagine a grassroots cricket program that has more potential than Blowfly Cricket to provide long term benefits to children with intellectual disabilities and their families and support networks. The model that has been created for Blowfly Cricket is easily replicated and there are plans to greatly expand the program and create new centres. Additionally, there are plans to further expand and modify the program to accommodate other special needs areas for children, including blind cricket, deaf cricket, children with mental illnesses and other various target groups. We as an association firmly believe it is a great opportunity to work closely with community groups to facilitate a safe and nurturing environment for children with special needs. Please contact me directly on either my address or mobile telephone if you require further information, or wish to discuss our application further. Yours in community sports, MARK RUSHTON BLOWFLY CRICKET TREASURER HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 15

IN2CRICKET : GALSTON-GLENORIE The first week of the Galston- Glenorie In2Cricket Centre was held on the 14th of October with 11 enthusiastic youngsters turning up between the ages of 3 and 8. The club decided to run this first session as a Come and Try session with all kids being encouraged to come down and try In2Cricket with the prospects of them staying on to play every Friday for the 10 weeks of the program. The kids were greeted by our President, John Barker, In2Cricket Co-Ordinator Justin Epthorp and Brad Pettit from Cricket NSW who came down to show us all how it was done. Brad ran an awesome session, getting the kids into batting, bowling and catching, the foundation skills used in cricket as well as a few games such as Rapid Fire and keep the bucket full. Brad also handed out Cricket NSW show bags to the first week participants as well as their In2Cricket packs which provide children with a plastic cricket bat, shirt, hat and ball! Since the first week we have had two more session run on sunny Friday afternoons, outside of our main sponsor, Glenorie RSL. Thinking that 11 participants was an amazing achievement for a small club in its first year of In2Cricket we were in for quite a shock. Week 2 saw 10 more participants turn up and to date after the 3 sessions we have 25 participants registered (including 4 girls!) and expect that there may be a few more to turn up over the next few weeks. The first year of Galston-Glenorie In2Cricket has a few more surprises left in it. Over the coming weeks, we have members of the NSW Breakers and hopefully a member or two from the NSW Speedblitz Blues. We are looking in to having an In2Cricket presentation/ Christmas Party during/after the final session for this year on the 16th December. A big thank you must go out to the parents of In2Cricketers and some of Galston-Glenorie s A Grade side who have given up time on Friday afternoons to come down and help out in coaching the future generations of cricketer s at Galston-Glenorie. For those aspiring In2Cricketers, it is anticipated that we will run further In2Cricket sessions after the Christmas holidays so keep your eyes out for advertisements in local media, school newsletters and mailboxes near you! 17 WORKING WITH NSGCA The Northern Sydney Girls Cricket Association (NSGCA) has just completed it s 11th season. Compared to many clubs and associations, we have a pretty small history, however over 11 years we have given over one thousand girls the opportunity to play cricket, often going to play representative, grade or state; quite an achievement. This season, we had a representative team in both U13s and U15s, with the former coming second place in a tightly contested final. The girls had a wonderful time and all enjoy their cricket. Thanks to those who assisted during the carnival, particularly Eric Junkkari, Anton Cole and Bryce Thompson. We also ran two competitions; Cup and Shield, for primary and senior school students respectively. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club, as always, had strong numbers in both competitions and ended up taking the premierships across Cup and Shield. West Ryde Rovers had a strong season in Shield and were unlucky to get beaten in the final against a veteran WPHCCC Red side. Castle Hill RSL lost a few girls last year due to the HSC, so it was quite an effort for them to get a new team together. Although they struggled against some older teams, they did very well and put in a fantastic effort each game. Gordon/St Ives once again combined to form two teams, which excelled in both competitions as the season progressed. Our Cup and Shield Finals were held on Saturday 10th March at James Henty and Berry Park respectively. It was also a Pink Stumps Day for the McGrath Foundation and we managed to raise close to $500. Huge thanks to Kingsgrove Sports for their donation to the raffle and all the players and parents who assisted on the day. This season, we also managed to receive sponsorship from Nilgiri s Indian Restaurant in St Leonards. We are very grateful to Nilgiri s for their support this season, particularly through the weekly Participation awards that we have been able to give to players who play within the Spirit of the Game and encourage their team-mates. They provide excellent service and the food is wonderful next time you are near North Sydney, check them out! As well as sponsorship, we were lucky to receive a $1750 grant from the Commonwealth Bank, including equipment. This money went towards funding NSWCUSA umpiring and scoring courses for our volunteers. It is the first time that our association has been able to offer such training and the feedback was extremely positive. Thanks to Nilgiri s for hosting us and the Carlingford branch for their support and assistance. This season, we also managed to receive sponsorship from Nilgiri s Indian Restaurant in St Leonards. 33 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT The season attracted a total of 78 teams, 72 in the Saturday Competition and 8 in the Sunday One Day Competition. The Association welcomed teams from the Epping Shires club and the North Shore club into our competitions for the first time. The weather throughout the summer was less than perfect, however, the Grand Final weekend did provide two great days within which to decide the champions in each of the grades. The Colts Competition was not conducted this season, with the majority of clubs opting for modification to the A reserve Competition by including a quota of Under 23 players to be played as the Kookaburra Cup, kindly sponsored by the Kookaburra Sports. The Senior Competition season again commenced with a T20 event, a popular innovation started the previous season. It is an event that permits our clubs to get the season started whilst we wait for the release of all of our grounds from the winter sports. THE PREMIERS The defending Premiers, Asquith Rugby League, were eager participants in the A Grade Final, playing against Minor Premiers, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, at Mark Taylor Oval. ARL were seeking a seventh successive A grade title, however, the WPHC team achieved a well deserved premiership in a final that was dominated by the bowlers, with the exception of one partnership that proved to be the deciding factor in the match, between Daniel Anderson and Scott Henderson. The outstanding performance from the bowlers was again from ARL s Ben Folkard, taking 7-42 from his 21 overs. The Kookaburra Cup Final was a deserved triumph for Minor Premiers, Mt Colah, defeating Berowra in the Final, in no small way due to a contribution of 245 from Sam Every out of a total of 363, a score that proved well out of reach of the Berowra team. The B Grade premiership went to the Kissing Point team, who finished second on the table, but defeated the Minor Premiers, Berowra, in the final, with evergreen Andy Parker being the major contributor to Kissing Point s batting in the Final, as was the case throughout the season. The Hornsby District club came from 4th spot to defeat the second placed WPHC team in the final of the B Reserve competition, in no small way due to the contribution of 192 from Zac Gamble-Holmes, from a total of 363, winning by just over 100 runs. Hornsby also took out the C grade Premiership with a victory over the Mt Colah side, with Peter Lipman taking 6-30 to steer Hornsby to a comfortable win over the minor premiers. C Reserve minor premiers, Hornsby, were unable to cope with WPHC bowler, Harmeet Pannu, who, in taking 6-22 from 11 overs, took his side to a comfortable victory. The C3 Final was a very closely contested game between Berowra and Kissing Point, with the Kissing Point side scraping past the Berowra total of 156 after losing their ninth wicket at 152. The innings of Clinton Pereksles, contributing 81 not out was the feature of this intriguing final. However, the D Grade Final proved even closer, with a tied result between Kissing Point and the effervescent Sydney Lions teams, thus being declared Joint Premiers, a result that rewarded both teams for a great contest. The post match celebrations demonstrated the tremendous enthusiasm from both teams in sharing the spoils. The D Reserve Final was a fitting finish to the season for Minor Premiers, Thornleigh, defeating a determined St Ives side quite comfortably, in no small way due to the 120 runs scored by keeper, Martin Bridgewood. Congratulations to Thornleigh for their one team, one Premiership record for the season. THE SUNDAY ONE DAY COMPETITION Eight teams contested in season 2011/12, with Berowra (3), ARL (2), Kenthurst (2) and Kissing Point competing. Berowra again dominated the Final, with the Berowra Maroons playing Berowra Soccer at Warrina Street. In a thrilling final, the vastly experienced Maroons batted first with the familiar names of Davenport, Locke, Fury, Johnson and Lindsay appearing, posting a score of 8-108, with Soccer reaching an agonising total of 106 in reply. Well done to the Berowra club for retaining their past Senior Competition players and for fielding three teams again this year. THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Congratulations are in order for the Berowra Club, who have won the Senior Club Championship for season , with St Ives being runners up. Berowra fielded 10 teams, including three in the Sunday One Day Competition, and whilst they won only the Sunday Final, they made the semi finals in six grades of the Saturday Senior Competitions, an outstanding achievement for the club. THE JOHN HAYNE CUP Four clubs, Normanhurst/ HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 33

SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT Warrawee, Kissing Point, WPHC and Castle Hill RSL entered teams in the John Hayne Cup, which was played as a T20 Tournament at the Foxglove North and South grounds. Unfortunately, the weather intervened, forcing the cancellation of the second Saturday. Castle Hill RSL were the victors, courtesy of their two wins on the first day, and our thanks go to Roger Friend for organising this year s season finale. GROUNDS and WEATHER This past season provided more than its share of wet weather and far too many competition fixtures were abandoned or played in unfavourable and perhaps treacherous conditions. Whilst it has, of recent seasons, been the policy of the SCC to encourage play by leaving the final decision to the captains when there is not an official umpire, there have been sufficient occasions where teams have very reluctantly played in questionable conditions, it seems appropriate that these rules should be reviewed to ensure that the safety of players is the primary concern, over and above the match result. This would suggest that decisions on the fitness of grounds for play may need to be made by an independent body, a process that would require careful structuring by the Association. The shortage of suitable Senior Competition grounds proves a continuing problem and the Association has been active through the President and others in prompting our three councils to address this issue. These bodies do not move quickly with regard to these commitments, however, we must continue to seek their cooperation prior to council elections in September of LOCAL RULES Following the prior season a Local Rules Meeting was held and several amendments were agreed to by the club delegates in attendance. THE Local Rules booklet was subsequently amended, printed and made available on the MyCricket website prior to the commencement of the Senior Competition. However, it became obvious that some clubs, teams, captains had not subsequently read the new version of the Local Rules and were unfortunately penalised when found in breach of the rules, specifically with regard to the registration and rating of new players. I would remind all clubs, teams and captains to study the new version of the Local Rules prior to the season commencement to ensure that they fully understand and comply with the rules as voted upon and thus accepted. THE SENIOR COMPETITION COMMITTEE Taking a position on the Senior Competition Committee is quite an undertaking, and I would certainly extend my gratitude to each of the committee members who took on the responsibility for the season. The task of supervising the player ratings was taken by John Klingberg, who was diligent in his application of the guidelines throughout the season. Steve Wilson took responsibility for the Competition Draws across all grades, the T20 Competition, finals etc and, as usual, was totally committed to this unenviable task. The remaining committee members contributed throughout the year by monitoring their respective grades, identifying any anomalies, and giving of their time very generously to ensure that the competitions were properly administered. I must express my sincere gratitude to each of Col Griffin, Roger Friend, Raja Rajamohan and Greg Fiedler, in addition to John and Steve, for their solid support throughout the season and more. May I take this opportunity to also thank those clubs who consistently applied themselves to the rules of the association and made life much easier for the committee. 35 A GRADE COMPETITION FINAL REPORT Umpires: Geoff Hasler and Steve Wilson. Good weather, excellent pitch, well prepared for the final match of the year and an outfield that encouraged quality fielding all came together for the A Grade final between Minor Premiers, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, and the champion team for the past six seasons, Asquith Rugby League. ARL Captain, Steve Loccisano had no hesitation upon winning the toss in inviting WPHC Captain James Makin to have first use of the pitch, a decision that looked to be correct when the WPHC side were 3-35 at the drinks break after 14 overs. By lunch, the score had progressed to 7-57, with the main destroyer being the always dangerous Ben Folkard, who had taken 5-27 from his unbroken spell of 12 overs. ably supported by a good performance from the ARL team in the field. Daniel Anderson and Scott Henderson resumed after the long break and by drinks in the second session had taken the score along to 99, with Anderson on 41 and Henderson on 14. Following the break, they continued to play straight and frustrate the accurate ARL attack, and at the Tea break had restored some sense of respectability to the WPHC score being 7-123, Anderson having reached 57 and Henderson on 21, an unfinished partnership of 72 incredible valuable runs. Daniel Anderson was dismissed soon after the resumption of play, without adding to his score and the task was left to the Experienced Scott Henderson and the remaining tail to add to the total, and he added the bulk of the rest of the final total of 153, his contribution being a fine 42. Ben Folkard finished the innings with the exceptional figures of 7-41 from his 21 overs, again proving to be the ever effective leader of the ARL bowlers, ably supported by Jeff Lee, Michael Hall and Richard Carter, who each took a wicket and bowled economically throughout the innings. ARL was to face 14 overs prior to stumps on Day 1, and lost opener Phil Newton in that period to leave the ground with an overnight score of Sunday continued the good weather and ground conditions, and ARL faced the task of scoring a further 133 runs to claim their seventh successive A Grade Championship title. After some25 minutes, Michael Hall was dismissed and soon after, skipper Steve Loccisano joined him back in the stands. Greg Robinson and Ritchie Carter settled into a partnership that took the score to 57, less than 100 runs from victory, when Robinson was bowled by spinner, Sol Thomlinson. Folkard came to the crease and the scoring rate lifted as he and Carter ran well between the wickets until Henderson joined the attack and Folkard chopped the ball on to leave with the score at 76. Taylor came to the crease, only to see his off stump cart wheeling on his first ball, bring Greg Westwood to the crease to face the Henderson hat trick attempt. The loud appeal when Henderson hit Westwood on the pads in front of leg turned to groans of despair when the hat trick ball was ruled NO BALL by the umpire, however Westwood was dismissed on the last ball prior to the lunch break with the ARL total on 82. With 72 runs still required to take the lead after the resumption of play, not out batsman Carter was on 11, with Hall and Robinson having contributed 20 and 21 respectively. The eighth wicket stand threatened to repair some of the damage, as had been the case for WPHC on the previous day, with Denver Rego joining Carter. They took the score to 110 before Rego was caught behind off the bowling of Sam Baidya, and Carter was unfortunately run out with no addition to the score, for a resolute 26. The final two wickets added some 14 runs, before Baidya again struck to finish the ARL innings at a total of 124, some 30 runs short of their target. A well earned win to the WPHC team, Minor Premiers, now A Grade Champions for Season , taking possession of the recently refurbished and magnificent A Grade Rolf Trophy. This final certainly lived up to expectations in terms of the quality of the play from both teams, and the great crowd of supporters created an atmosphere that was worthy of an A Grade Final, and was a tribute to the two teams involved. Congratulations to the new A grade Champions, and congratulations are also appropriate for the runners up, who fought all the way before relinquishing their six year reign at the top of the Association A Grade. Many thanks to both the Northern Districts grade club and to Hornsby Shire Council for providing us with the best of their facilities at Mark Taylor Oval for our A grade Final HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 35

ROSS TURNER CUP Ross Turner Cup Match Report Sunday, 18 March 2012 Kenthurst Oval West 7/99 (44.2 overs) (P. Weerasooriya 25, C. Breytenbach 22 no, S. Gracias Flor 17 no, G. Blackwood 4/12, T. Xavier 2/19) def. East 97 (46.5 overs) (M. Chamberlain 19, M. Corish 17, N. McNay 17, J. Preedy 2/9, C. Breytenbach 2/12). Players of match awards Calvin Breytenbach (West) and George Blackwood (East). HK&HDCA s showcase junior representative match the Ross Turner Cup (RTC), has been held since and features the outstanding players in our district from the U/15 age group and below. The annual East v. West contest was the brainchild of Tom Richmond OAM, Life Member and Patron of HK&HDCA, who in 2010 passed the responsibility (including the U/13 Glenn Hourigan Cup fixture) to Bruce Wood, President, Coaches Association. The toss brought together two current HK&HDCA premiership captains, George Blackwood (Weblin Shield) and John Anderson (Moore Shield). George won the toss and decided that his East team would bat first. The turf pitch had been covered for nearly two days due to rain and the conditions were not easy for batting, particularly in the morning session. Matt Chamberlain (19), Matt Corish (17) and Nick McNay (17) battled hard against quality fast bowling from Jackson Preedy (2/9), Calvin Breytenbach (2/12), Aditya Ramakrishnan, Savio Gracias Flor, Sam Heinrich and Henry Ludlow. Mansimar Singh put in a superb display as wicket-keeper, taking 2 catches, a brilliant run out, and not conceding any byes. John Anderson led his West side with authority, resulting in the East team being all out for just 97 runs in its 47th and last over (reduced from 50 overs due to a short rain delay). In reply, the West team began well with opener Praneeth Weerasooriya top-scoring for the match with 25 runs. They were looking comfortable at 1/46, however a middle order collapse occurred resulting in the West team slumping to 7/56 in the 29th over. U/15 President s Cup players, Calvin Breytenbach (22 no) and Savio Gracias Flor (17 no) combined for a RTC record 8th wicket partnership of 43 runs (unbroken) to steer their team to an exciting 3 wicket victory. Swing-bowler George Blackwood (4/12) and leg-spinner Thomas Xavier (2/19) bowled very well for the East team, supported by Nick Miller, Tom O Loughlin, Dylan Hood, Ben Wallwood & Nick McNay. Oliver Hing was all class as wicket-keeper and Matt Corish took two brilliant catches fielding at short mid-wicket. The Hornsby Advocate newspaper attended the RTC and GHC matches refer to report and online photo gallery: whereilive.com.au/sport/story/ east-and-west-both-winners-inross-turner-and-glenn-hourigancups/ Special thanks are extended to Triforce Sports (Abbas Aly) for supplying the players with their RTC shirts, and Kooindah Waters (HK&HDCA sponsors) for providing four major prizes (4 x 2 rounds of golf with carts). Thanks also to the Kenthurst / Upper Hills CC (President, Col Griffin and Curator, Peter Wright) for hosting the match and ensuring that the turf pitch was covered on Friday afternoon before the rain returned. We were pleased to have a number of special guests, including Ross Turner; Tom Richmond OAM, Glenn Hourigan, Alf. James OAM, Ross Anderson, John Hayne AM and Barry McDonald (HK&HDCA Life Members); Nathan Tilbury (HK&HDCA President); Denise Annetts (HK&HDCA Patron) and Mike Langford (President NDs). The RTC teams were coached by Daniel Anderson (West) and Justin Epthorp (East), plus Josh Miller. BRUCE WOOD HKHDCCA PRESIDENT HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 57

GLENN HOURIGAN CUP GLENN HOURIGAN CUP Match Report Sunday, 18 March 2012 Kenthurst No. 2 Oval See also scorecard and photos (with article) East 8/158 (Ryan Tullia 44, William Giacometti 31, Eknoor Singh 23, Travis Loxton 3/15, Liam McGuire 3/29) def. West 132 (T. Loxton 49, Rahul Krishna 32, Avneet Bhele 3/17, Lachlan Anchique 2/11, W. Giacometti 2 catches, E. Singh 3 w-k run outs). The annual Glenn Hourigan Cup (GHC) match commenced in , however for the first time in 2012, it was played alongside the U/15 Ross Turner Cup (RTC) match, which was a great move by the Coaches Association. Parents with sons in both fixtures; HK&HDCA officials; special guests; and the local press appreciated the opportunity to wander between these showcase junior representative matches at Kenthurst to catch the highlights. The GHC match brought together the leading U/13 (or younger) players in the district in teams which roughly represented the eastern and western halves of the Association. The teams were selected on the basis of performances throughout the season, mainly in representative cricket, however outstanding form in the preliminary GHC T20 matches at Montview Oval on 19 February 2012 was also taken into account. The players, parents and officials were delighted that Glenn Hourigan and his wife Margaret were in attendance to watch much of the play. Glenn gave an encouraging talk to the boys before play started. The umpires, Kieran Canavan and Alf James OAM, were impressed with the maturity displayed by the young volunteer coaches (Utkarsh Somaiya, Luke Thorburn, Matt Vile & Will Johnston) appointed by Bruce Wood, President HKHDCCA. This year s GHC was a tremendous match with many highlights and exceptional performances. Both Captains (Anthony Johnston and Travis Loxton) engendered an atmosphere conducive to mutual respect for opposition players, scorers and umpires. The East team won the toss and elected to bat first. Ryan Tullia and Eknoor Singh showed great tenacity in stabilising their innings. Ryan Tullia scored 44 runs in an innings highlighted by excellent concentration and maturity, which earned him the East side s Man of the Match award. Eknoor Singh (23), William Giacometti (31) and Thomas Randall (11 not out) also made important contributions. During the innings there were some outstanding performances in the field. Connor Holmes took the first wicket with the aid of a good catch by Nick Dolly (w-k). After some tight bowling and great efforts in the field to restrict the run rate, Jack Donkin effected a nice run out, which was followed by some sensational bowling from Travis Loxton and Liam McGuire, who finished with 3 wickets each. The East team made 8/159, which looked like a competitive score but would require some careful bowling and committed fielding to defend. In a similar situation to what occurred in the 1st innings, the West team lost an early wicket but regrouped with Travis Loxton and Rahul Krishna scoring 49 and 32 respectively. At the halfway mark (3.40pm) the West team looked like they had the match under control, however the captain of East team, Anthony Johnston, never stopped encouraging his players and inspiring them to give their all. The batting display by Travis Loxton was impressive to watch and deservedly won him the West team s Man of the Match medal. At 3.42pm the East team got their first wicket in 1 ½ hours when Avneet Bhele clean bowled Loxton. This was followed up with another two wickets taken by Lachlan Anchique and Bhele respectively. As so often happens when a couple of quick wickets fall, the flow of runs dried up and this consequently put the West team under pressure. The East team responded to the urgency with some great fielding that resulted in two run outs, both effected by Avneet Bhele combined with Eknoor Singh (w-k). From 3.42pm to 4.46pm there were a total of 9 dismissals, which was testament to a great competition that ebbed and flowed between East and West. The East team produced two outstanding bowling performances from Lachlan Anchique and Avneet Bhele, who took 2 and 3 wickets respectively. Both were also very economical with several maidens between them; they conceded just 28 runs in total off their combined 17 overs. The match ended on a high note for the lovers of fielding with a very long throw by Anthony Johnston to directly run out the returning batsman, who incidentally had discounted this possibility and was sauntering in a relaxed manner back to his crease. Alf s raised finger from square leg ended a memorable match. BRUCE WOOD HKHDCCA PRESIDENT HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 59

KOOKABURRA SPORTS The HK&HDCA has been proud to receive continued sponsorship from Kookaburra with the agreement to continue until 2012/2013. This year Kookaburra sponsored HK&HDCA and member clubs to the tune of over $7000. The HK&HDCA sincerely thanks Cameron Eve, a former player of our Association, for all of his support and assistance with this sponsorship. Cameron currently plays 1st Grade for Mosman CC in the SCA Competition. ABOUT KOOKABURRA It could be argued that Kookaburra would be within its rights to patent the sound of leather on willow such is the pivotal role the brand has played in the evolution of cricket. With traditions as old as the sport itself, the Kookaburra cricket ball is presently used exclusively in all one day international cricket and 85% of Test cricket a fine testament of trust in a brand that has matched step for step the sport s advancement over the last century. As cricket has moved forward so has Kookaburra s range of products ensuring that the quality of the equipment being used consistently matched the improving standards being set on the pitch. This reputation for quality and innovation lies at the heart of the Kookaburra brand. Kookaburra was established in 1890, the brainchild of saddle and harness maker Alfred Grace Thompson. After emigrating to Australia in search of a warmer climate, Thompson found that his trade was being eaten away by the advent of the motor industry and consequently decided to use his experience in leather to expand into the provision of sporting goods. Ably assisted by his sons Bill and Alf, Thompson s traditional production methods were soon in demand, particularly within the burgeoning cricket ball market. From these beginnings, the Kookaburra brand has been propelled forward by four generations of the Thompson family, all the while remaining true to the need for product development to remain at the core of the business. KOOKABURRA RISING STAR AWARD Once again we must thank Kookaburra for their wonderful ongoing support and initiative with the Kookaburra Rising Star Awards. Each month a rising star is selected, winning a fantastic trophy at our Junior and Representative Presentation Night, as well as $100 worth of gear. An overall winner is then selected and presented with a trophy and $500 worth of gear, including a fantastic new cricket bat. This initiative has taken palce since 2004/05 when Parneet Bhatia was presented as the inaugural winner. This year, rising star Daniel Nicotra took home the coveted award and some fantastic Kookaburra equipment. The weeks leading into the competition saw consistent rain across NSW and we were lucky that the days before the tournament were dry and allowed Newcastle to prepare the grounds in time for the tournament. HKHDCA has never won the carnival, which was established in 1982, but we were quietly confident that if we played to our potential we could repeat the form that saw us joint winners of the Moore Shield this year. We were placed in a tough group with Parramatta and Hawkesbury DCA sides as well as the IDCA from Newcastle. Round 1 Vs Newcastle IDCA. On Monday the boys played the local IDCA side and managed to post a decent total on a slow outfield. Solid contributions came from Matt McVay (30) and Daniel Heidegger (70 no), who batted well before having to retire on 50. The unfamiliar turf wickets caused HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 62 a few problems for some of the boys and Daniel found himself back at the crease from the 40th over with Ben Jones. They batted well and managed to put on an undefeated partnership of 43 in 10 overs. When it was our turn to bowl the bowlers soon learnt that bowling short on turf could be costly, but we managed to field well, hold on to our catches and managed to dismiss them in the 44th over for 138. Star bowler was John Anderson who nabbed 3/9 of 5 overs. A good first game to get rid the Xmas cobwebs before the next two games which were against stronger DCA teams. Round 2 Vs Hawkesbury. This game was on a smallish oval, but with the wicket prepared for the game being well out of square and on a slope it was decided to play in the previous day s wicket. We won the toss and got off to a flyer with Deane Piek scoring a quick fire 50 before having to retire. The middle order then contributed with Matty Chamberlain (37) and Ben Wallwood (17) chipping in with quick runs before Deane came back to help get the total to 170 in the 44th over. With uneven bounce nobody ever seemed settled and we felt that the total of 170 was quite defendable. Our turn to bowl, and with the lessons from yesterday well and truly learn all the bowlers kept the balls well up and managed to have the opposition batsmen jumping as balls reared off a length or stayed low, allow us to skittle them for 79 off 27.5 overs. Pick of the bowlers was Henry Ludlow (IDCA Captain) who was filling in for the tournament. He bowled a tight line and was rewarded with 3/12 off 5. Dylan Hood (2/12 off 5) and Ben Wallwood (2/15 off 5) supported him and we were back in the hotel pool before anyone else. Round 3 Vs Parramatta. This was the big game for us in the pool stage and Parramatta were brimming with confidence when we arrived at the field. We won the toss and decided to bat on another slow outfield. After losing Deane to a lucky LBW decision Matt McVay (50 no) and Daniel Heidegger (44) set about building a 126 run partnership to establish a solid platform from which to launch in the last 15 overs. We managed to get the total to 169 with some quick hitting from Matt Chamberlain, John Anderson and PraneethWeerisooriya before closing the innings out at 7/169. When Parramatta came to the crease the boys fired up and had them at 8/16 before they staged a late rally to end with 8/58 off 35 overs when the game was called off because of lighting and rain. With the 25 overs having been completed we won the match on run rate, and Parramatta were relegated to 5th spot as a result of their quotient being badly affected by the low score and loss of so many wickets. This was one of the more satisfying wins for the boys against an old foe. Game 4 Semi Final Vs central Coast. The day 4 semi final saw the boys a little flat after the previous days heroics and 3 days of constant cricket after a few weeks spent relaxing. However, after a chat from the coach, the spring was back in their step and we bowled well again to roll a strong central Coast (they were joint winners of the previous year s U13 Ballina Shield together with us) for 120. Outstanding bowling from Matt Chamberlain, who was suffering

U14 NEWCASTLE TOUR: CONTINUED from blistered feet but managed to bowl through the pain, with 4/17 from 8 overs and Ben Wallwood 3/15 off his 8 saw Central Coast back in the sheds in 45 overs. Our turn to bat and Deane got the side off to a good start with another quick fire 33 before another being given out to a marginal LBW decision. With the run rate now taken care of John Anderson and Praneeth Weerisooriya got together and batted Central Coast out of the game with an unbeaten partnership of 76, wrapping the game up in the 41st over. Game 5 Grand Final Vs Hunter Valley. Everyone was looking forward to playing the final at the beautiful Newcastle No.1 Sportsgound. The day dawned dark and overcast and the start was delayed by 45 minutes with the covers remaining on until the rain ceased. Having won the toss for the 5th time this tournament, and with the game shortened to 40 overs per innings, we batted and a trademark 33 from big Deane set Hunter Valley back on their haunches in the first 6 overs. A 16 run over off their star quick sent a clear message to them that Deane was not going to be intimidated by fast short pitched bowling and this caused them to spread the field allowing quick singles to be taken by the openers. Once Deane departed Matt was joined by Daniel Heidegger and they repeated their partnership against Parramatta with another 90 run stand before Matt had to retire on 52. Daniel holed out shortly after on 46 pushing the runs and another flurry of runs from the middle order saw us post 202/4 in the 40 overs. Hunter Valley never managed to get near the run rate required as a result of the excellent bowling of all our bowlers. Everyone contributed but the standout performances came from tow of the stand in players Josh Marshall with 3/13 off 4 and Henry Dot-Ball Ludlow with 2/15 off his 4. With the game well and truly out of Hunter s reach, John relented to the pressure and bowled the opening batsmen Deane and Matt McVay for the last 2 overs. Let s just say that there is no pressure on any of the established bowlers to retain their spots. Hunter ended up on 7/140 in their 40 overs. A comprehensive win from our boys, with another shield to go with the Moore Shield already in the cabinet. Summary A fabulous Tour with all parents and children having a very enjoyable time. A cohesive and happy team both on and off the field. A cohesive and happy parent group both at the games and afterwards. A well planned rotation system used for batters and bowlers, giving everyone an opportunity in the early games and based on performance in those games the fill in boys of Henry and Josh were the key wicket takers in the final. The 3 boys who filled in for Alex, Sid and Tom fitted into the team very well, and they all contributed at crucial times. Bowling aggregate: Henry Ludlow 7 wickets in only 4 matches at 8.67runs/wicket and 2.08 economy rate. Batting aggregate: Daniel Heidegger (Also won the Best Batsman Award for the Carnival) Peter Heidegger (Manager) HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 63

VALE: GEORGE PENNICOOK MBE We record with great regret the death on 12 January of Mr George Godfrey Pennicook, MBE, the oldest Life Member of the Association. George was born in Northumberland in February 1925 and was brought to Australia later that year. He grew up in Thornleigh and in May 1943 he enlisted in the Australian Army and saw service in the Pacific, mostly in Papua New Guinea. In the early 1950s he built a home for his family in Berowra on Berowra Waters Road and became a member of the Berowra Cricket Club. He played for the Club for several years and was its Secretary in the late 1950s. He was made the second Life Member of the Club in George was regarded as the Father of the Association s Schoolboy Competition. He was the Organizing Secretary from 1961/62 to 1963/64 during which period the number of teams increased from 26 to 50 and the number of players from 471 to 951. He was also Vice-President for two seasons. He made significant and great improvements to the management of the junior competitions, kept meticulous records in exercise books (which still survive) and promoted the first HK&HDCA representative teams. In 1964 he was made a Life Member of the Association together with John Hayne (now in his eightieth year) and the late Bill Reynallt and Harry Taylor. He had a fine reputation in the wider community and held many voluntary positions. He was Metropolitan Vice-President of the State RSL in which capacity he helped a great number of veterans and was active in the Hornsby Branch of the RSL, notably in the RSL Youth Club Movement. He spent most of his working life with the Australian Taxation Office where he became a highly respected prosecutor in the Investigations Branch. On retirement he and his late wife moved to Kincumber. George was a very popular man and a great raconteur. Many will remember the community barbeques which he organized at Berowra. He was appointed a Member of the British Empire by the Queen in The Association extends its sympathy to his two daughters, Barbara and Lesley. ALFRED JAMES OAM HK&HDCA LIFE MEMBER VALE: JAYASIRI LIYANAPATHIRANA Mr Jayasiri Liyanapathirana was a founding member and the first secretary of the Sydney Lions club when it was formed in He was heavily involved in those first manic days of getting the club up and running and helping with establishing the first Sydney Lions teams that competed in the Blacktown Districts competition. He has been involved with the Sydney Lions organising committee in various capacities since formation (as secretary/ public officer and as a committee member). Jayasiri also played for the Sydney Lions teams in 2007/08; 2008/09 and 2009/10 in the Blacktown Districts competition and for the D/C3 Sydney Lions teams in 2010/11 and 2011/12 in the HKHDCA competition. He was a useful all-rounder who could bat anywhere in the 11 (career highest score of 52) and bowled pace with a Malingaesque slingy action (could be relied on to typically take one or two wickets an innings). He was also renowned for his effort and commitment on the field, often seen outpacing the younger lads when chasing leather. Most importantly, he played the game for the fun, enjoyment and pleasure of being involved in a sport that he loved so much and was a great team player. He will be dearly missed by all his team mates at Sydney Lions HK&HDCA ANNUAL REPORT 64
