6 PRESIDENT S REPORT MARK RUSHTON HK&HDCA PRESIDENT HK&HDCA President s Report It is with great pleasure that the Executive join with me in presenting the 85th Annual Report and Financial Notes for your consideration, which has been produced to celebrate another progressive and successful season. We as a body have witnessed further consolidation, growth and development of the wonderful sport of cricket in our local community sports area. We have seen a small reduction in our overall player numbers, though one may associate this slight decline with the poor performance of the Aussies in the Ashes series. Historical records suggest when interest is high in the Ashes series at home, i.e. when our National team is performing well, local community cricket associations across the state see an increase in player numbers at the grassroots level. Of course, with development and progress comes significant change which within itself, produces additional pressures and demands on our large number of volunteers at all levels. Once again, it is essential that ANNUAL REPORT we as a Community Cricket Association recognise the collective efforts of the many volunteers across all levels of the Association, including those invaluable volunteers from our Member Clubs and affiliated bodies. Additionally, I further extend our gratitude to the respective families of our volunteers, as the impact on family time continues to be an enormous burden and not without cost to the dynamics within the family. Moving on, there have been many outstanding highlights throughout the season, including: The success of the HKHDCCA (Coaches Association), in their inaugural season, worthy winners of the Integrity Cup for their outstanding contribution to the local game within our district. Asquith Rugby League CC winning a 6th consecutive A-Grade Premiership in our premier senior Saturday afternoon competition, an outstanding performance from a champion team. The U/15 E.G. Weblin Shield winning the premiership, following an undefeated season. Add this to a U/13 Presidents Cup premiership, together with the U/23 Daily Telegraph Shield making the final in their competition, all amounts to a very successful season for our Representative teams, under the banner of the new name of the Northern Knights. The improved professionalism and development will witness a winning culture in the years ahead. The continued success of the senior Sunday Competition in its second season. It is understood there is consideration to further expand the competition into 2 divisions in the 2011/12 season, which will allow more even contests. This possible development augurs well for the future success of this Sunday afternoon senior competition. The affiliation of one of our newest members, Sydney Lions Sports Club (SLSC), a club who have brought two teams into our senior Saturday afternoon competition, performing well in the B Grade and C2 Grade Saturday

7 PRESIDENT S REPORT: CONTINUED afternoon senior competitions. The Executive understand the SLSC are considering entering more senior teams and a junior team in the 2011/12 competition. Sponsorship Kookaburra Sports, Triforce Sports and Kooindah Waters are the main sponsors of the Association and are to be thanked for their collective support of the local game. Bruce Wood needs to be sincerely thanked for his efforts in introducing Kooindah Waters as a major sponsor of the HK&HDCA. Brian Binfield of Fullpoint Graphics, continues to provide outstanding professional service to the Association with our printing and publication needs often at short notice. Uncle Brian (aka Santa ) is to be applauded for his support and guidance with our Association s various publications a quality and reliable service. Northern District CC, our local grade club needs to be thanked for their awareness and contribution to the Association. Grade cricket is the recognised pathway for our elite junior players to be part of, in order for them to reach their highest level. I am certain it is a matter of time before one of our junior players goes on to play for our national team. Cricket NSW and the ongoing support and assistance offered to our Member Clubs. The development of the Executive Officer role which is now progressing with key roles and direction, which will benefit the Association and kindred bodies for many years to come. Our website continues to be the hub and future direction of the Association and continued to gain traffic amongst our members and supporters. Our second annual Presidents Forum was held at the Asquith Bowling and Recreation Club with a host of Member Club Presidents and representatives of our Affiliated Bodies in attendance. Barry McDonald kindly acted as the Facilitator of the forum. The ongoing support of our three Councils is well and truly appreciated. Ongoing ground and / or amenities improvements at Normanhurst Oval, Headen Park, Greenway Oval (Hornsby Shire Council), Bannockburn Oval, Comenarra Field, Samuel King Oval, George Christie Oval (Ku-ring-gai Council), Wrights Oval (2 fields) and Les Shore Oval (The Hills Shire Council) are testament to our ongoing working in partnership relationship with our Councils. The Community Building Partnerships (CBP) grant ($28k) received from the State government for the redevelopment of James Park, Hornsby. This is an exciting venture by the Association as it is a wonderful opportunity for our Association to be working in closely with key stake holders, including the broader community. Meg Lanning, one of our very own junior girl players of years gone by, has had a stunning debut season to the Australian Women team with a century in her second international match. Jesse Hogan in a CricInfo online article writes.the opening batter blasted an unbeaten 104 off 118 deliveries to lead the Southern Stars to a commanding nine-wicket win, an innings complete with eight boundaries and a six. No Australian woman has started their career so well; by men s standards the innings was also historic. She comfortably beat Ricky Ponting s record as the youngest Australian to score an ODI century - Ponting was 21 years and 21 days, she was 18 and 228 days - and also equalled Alan Turner s feat from 1975 of a player scoring a century in just their second innings. Personally, I recall Meg as a 10yo girl blasting 2 centuries and 99no in the one representative season as a player in the U11 HK&HDCA Jim Goulder Shield. When I contacted Meg via Facebook querying if she was indeed the same player she replied Hello there, yes that s me :). I moved to Melbourne Thank you we are off to England Thursday for the quad series. I still have my shirt and cap. :) In closing, the Association continues to be soundly managed by the Executive Members, and their collective efforts truly deserve any recognition they may receive. I wish all of our players, officials and families all the very best and hope you all return to be part of our great game of cricket our national sport. 7 ANNUAL REPORT

8 EXECUTIVE OFFICER S REPORT BEN GUSSEY HK&HDCA EXECUTIVE OFFICER The 2010/11 season was both a challenging and rewarding one, from an Association and personal point of view. A number of initiatives that had been driven over the past few seasons came to fruition. Whilst in opposition, outsides forces have conspired to ensure that the Association will have to continue to be on its collective toes. The biggest step forward for the Association was the formation of the Coaches Association. This is the result of the vision of a few who recognise the vital role coaching plays and will play in the development of cricket in this region. It would not be unfair to say that the north has perhaps underperformed historically in providing elite players, particularly when compared to the Western Suburbs. By providing a new level of excellence we can look forward to bridging this gap. However, it is important to realise the Coaches Association is not just a centre for elite players. The Coaches Association actively promotes the accreditation of all coaches and also conducts school holiday ANNUAL REPORT coaching clinics for juniors.. It is important to recognise that the better a player or a coach understands the game, the more enjoyment they will receive from it. Our Representative sector also took their first steps towards a new, stronger culture. This year they were re-branded as the Northern Knights. This is modeled from similar efforts in other codes. By developing their own brand, we hope to eventually turn the Northern Knights in to the strongest club representative club in the NSWDCA competition. It also gives the Association an opportunity to market the club for sponsorship, in order to procure vital resources and make representative cricket affordable for all. Our sponsorship relationships have continued to grow in the past year. We already share a wonderful, mutuallybenificial relationship with Triforce Sports and Kookaburra Sports. We have now formed a relationship with Kooindah Waters: Residential Golf & Spa Resort. Kooindah Waters have been fantastic in their support and we hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership. There is information about Kooindah Waters further in to the Annual Report. Along with the additional support of Kooindah Waters we were successful in our application of a Community Building Partnership Grant that totalled close to $30,000. This will be used for upgrades at James Park in Hornsby. All of these developments have assisted in promoting the Association s development. However, we must remain vigilant in our community dealings as our grounds continue to come under attack. It will be with great future detriment if grounds are stripped away from an already ground-bare Association that continues to grow in player numbers. With that said, I would like to personally thank all of the players and volunteers who have assisted me in this role over the past 3 years. It has certainly been an interesting and enlightening journey through community sport. I hope the next few years see further development for the Association.

12 NOTES Statement By Members of the Committee The committee has determined that the Association is not a reporting entity and that this special purpose Financial Report should be prepared in accordance with the accounting policies outlines in Note 1 to the accounts. In the opinion of the committee the Financial Statements as set out in the Statement of Financial Position and Statement of Financial Performance and Notes thereto: 1. presents a true and fair view of the financial position of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association Inc. as at 30 April 2011 and it s performance for the year ended on that date. 2. at the date of this statement there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association Inc. will be able to pay its debts as and when they fall due. This statement is made in accordance with a resolution of the committee and is signed for an on behalf of the committee by: President: Treasurer: Mark Rushton David Toose Dated this Notes to and Forming Part of the Accounts For the Year Ended 30 April 2011 Note 1: Statement of Accounting Policies This financial report is a special purpose report prepared in order to satisfy the financial report preparation requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act of NSW. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity. The report has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 2001 and the following applicable Accounting Standards: AASB 1002: Events Occurring after Reporting Date AASB 1026: Cash Flow Statement AASB 1031: Materiality No other Australian Accounting Standards, Urgent Issues Group Consensus Views or other authoritative pronouncements of the Australian Accounting Standards Board have been applied. The financial report is prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets. The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this report: (a) Income Tax The committee is of the opinion that the Association is not liable for tax by virtue of the exemption of member income under the principal of mutuality. For this reason the accounting standard Tax Effect Accounting has not been applied nor has any charge for income tax been made in the accounts. (b) Fixed Assets Plant and Equipment are brought to account at cost. The depreciable amount of all fixed assets are depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the Association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. ANNUAL REPORT

13 Kooindah Waters Residential Golf and Spa Resort is proud to sponsor Hornsby Ku-ringgai and Hills District Cricket Association (HK&HDCA) and become a Gold sponsor for In partnering with the Association we hope to provide financial support to HK&HDCA in exchange for promotional opportunities which are in accordance with HK&HDCA values and reputation. Kooindah Waters has committed $7,500 to the Associataion over a period of 18 months. It is hoped that these funds will enable the Association to continue to provide a quality cricketing experience for members and support new initiatives that the Executive Committee considers appropriate. In addition Kooindah Waters will also provide inkind sponsorship on request by HK&HDCA to a maximum value of $7,500 for the duration of the Agreement. Such donations have included Stay and Play packages for events such as the Kenthurst Upper Hills trivia night. Kooindah Waters has also donated sports bottles for HK&HDCA S members usage, as well as offering special packages for all HK&HDCA members to utilise at the resort or golf. In return for the support of Kooindah Waters, HK&HDCA has offered many benefits such as featuring a logo on the HK&HDCA website and promoting the club through various mediums such as signage, banners and advertisements. It is also hoped that members of the Association will visit Kooindah Waters and enjoy the exclusive rates for HK&HDCA members. Situated in a tranquil bushland setting just 45 minutes from Wahroonga, Kooindah Waters is the perfect getaway for families, groups and couples alike. GROWTH As is indicative in the graphs above, the Association has generally remained steady or experienced growth over the last forty years. The number of Junior players has proven to be far more volatile than the number of Senior players. It is important to understand when examining the numbers that there has been a great change over the years in how numbers have been reported. In some instances, numbers have been calculated very roughly with an approximation based on team numbers. With the advent of mycricket we now have a, presumably, far more accurate DEVELOPMENT REPORT method of calculating player numbers. With that precautionary note, some deductions can be made from the numbers which will perhaps serve us in further trying to develop the Association. SENIORS In the table above, the Senior numbers have risen drastically since but more accurately the reported numbers grew from 2789 to Some growth was experienced post-ashes, as well as the increased popularity of T20 cricket. SUSTAINED GROWTH The key to continued growth within the Association is to understand our restrictions, such as grounds and continue to develop and improve formats such as Twilight cricket, Twenty20 and Sunday cricket. 16 WORKING WITH HKHDCCA The Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Coaches Association (HKHDCCA) was established in 2010 and is responsible for: promoting the objective that all club & rep. coaches attain the Level 1 accreditation (minimum); enhancing the ongoing development of our accredited coaches; raising the profile of coaching and giving coaches a collective voice within the Association; facilitating a future pathway for club and representative coaches; organising Junior Coaching Clinics in partnership with Northern District CC during the September / October and January school holidays; developing and implementing a structured development coaching program for the players nominated to attend the HK&HDCA U/10 off-season program for potential Foster Shield representative players; providing HKHDCCA members with professional coaching opportunities at the Junior Coaching Clinics with Northern District CC and at the HK&HDCA U/10 off-season development program; co-ordinating the annual Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup representative fixtures; assisting the HK&HDCA Representative Secretary with coaching matters relating to the Northern Knights representative teams; devising a scholarship scheme designed to provide financial assistance to a limited number of candidates nominated to attend a Cricket NSW accredited coaching course (Level 1, 2 or 3); identifying potential outstanding young coaches and providing coaching opportunities for these individuals through the Glenn Hourigan Cup and other initiatives; providing a mentor service to coaches as required, especially new or young coaches seeking guidance; conducting an annual Level 1 accredited coaching course for HK&HDCA and NDCC members; maintaining relevant information in the HKHDCCA folder in the library of the HK&HDCA website; and enabling the Association to maintain a record of all Level 1, 2 & 3 accredited coaches. The HKHDCCA Executive Committee for comprised Bruce Wood (President), Mark Rushton (Vice- President), Mike Burgin (Secretary), and David Bennett (Treasurer). All four are Level 2 accredited coaches. The HKHDCCA President is a member of the HK&HDCA Executive Committee in the role of Development Officer. HKHDCCA was honoured to have Ross Turner as its Patron. Ross played his early cricket with Pennant Hills CC in the HK&HDCA competition and went on to captain Northern District First Grade to two premierships. In later years, Ross worked for Cricket NSW, pioneering development activities, before going to London to work on cricket development for the ICC. Currently he is involved in the development of cricket in overseas countries such as Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Afghanistan and India. Ross has made a huge contribution to cricket on a worldwide basis, but is still keen to help out with cricket development in our local district. 17 STORY CONTINUED Ross wrote I welcome the prospect of working with you and the executive of the Coaches Association to undertake key initiatives that will lead to the highest quality coaching, which in turn, will serve to develop the standard and enjoyment levels of players throughout the Association. Rod Hokin did a terrific job as the HKHDCCA Coaching Coordinator (Head Coach). Rod plays First Grade for Northern District CC and is a talented and vastly experienced coach. He spends his off-seasons playing professional cricket and coaching in Ireland, UK. Rod assisted Bruce Wood in developing a Centre of Excellence within HK&HDCA to effectively accelerate the development of accredited coaches. HKHDCCA works in partnership with Northern District CC to promote and run junior Coaching Clinics during the September/October and January school holidays. The first of these Clinics took place in September 2010 at Waitara Oval, which was followed by two more Clinics in January 2011 at Waitara Oval and Kenthurst Park. The coach / player ratio was approximately 1 : 6 and the feedback from the players and their parents was excellent. The clinics included video analysis of the bowlers actions; specific coaching on batting, bowling and fielding skills (and wicket-keeping drills where applicable); training in the nets (including turf nets at Waitara); batting against a bowling machine (at Kenthurst); a wide range of coaching drills and games to reinforce the cricket skills learnt and to develop team work; plus a Cricket Olympics event and Super Sixes competitions. The accredited coaches engaged at the HKHDCCA / NDCC school holiday Coaching Clinics included Rod Hokin (Head Coach), Bruce Wood (Co ordinator), Jono Whealing, Dave Lowery, Nick Cheadle, Andrew Lowe, Irfan Baig, Tim Matson, Jamie Matson, Mike Burgin and Justin Epthorp. HKHDCCA also provided coaching opportunities for some outstanding young coaches, with Josh Miller, Daniel Anderson, Nathan Tanner & James Madden being appointed to coach teams in the Glenn Hourigan Cup competition in This was an exciting new direction for coaching within HK&HDCA, which will also strengthen our band of coaches in charge of our junior Northern Knights representative teams in future years. HKHDCCA appreciated wonderful support from the Association s major sponsors, Triforce Sports and Kooindah Waters. Special thanks to Abbas Aly from Triforce Sports for generously supplying complimentary playing shirts for the Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup representative players and officials, as well as polo shirts for the HKHDCCA coaches at the school holiday clinics. 18 WORKING WITH HKHDCUA The Umpires Association held its AGM on 12 July 2010, with Geoff Hasler being re-elected as President and Simon Moore being elected as Secretary, following Bruce Wood stepping down after a number of years of meritorious service as Secretary. Bruce was elected Vice President of the Umpire s Association. Tim Davidson was elected as Treasurer, with Barry McDonald elected as Training Officer. We were delighted to have three special guests from NSWCUSA at our AGM Darren Goodger, Education & Development Manager (& Life Member); Laurie Borg, Treasurer; and Dr Stephen Poole, Liaison Officer. Barry McDonald and Darren Goodger were invited to be Patrons of HKHDCUA for and both accepted the positions. Barry McDonald was inducted as the inaugural Life Member of HKHDCUA. Barry s contribution to the umpires association has been outstanding over many years and has held varying committee positions, most recently as Training Officer responsible for our Captain s Ticket courses and local umpire s badge courses. Barry has umpired an incredible 11 A Grade Finals in HK&HDCA. A total of 74 people attended the Captain s Ticket umpiring courses conducted by Barry this season, and a further 7 candidates sat for the HKHDCUA local umpire s badge exam. A total of 254 HKHDCUA umpiring appointments were made during , comprising 182 club matches and 72 representative matches. HKHDCUA records the number of individual club and rep. match umpiring appointments made each season and I m pleased to advise that John McQuillan passed the 200 match milestone (since ) and will be awarded a special medal at our AGM in July HKHDCUA continued to provide good support to the NSWDCA with umpiring appointments. 19 STORY CONTINUED Watson Shield Final. On the local scene, Geoff Hasler and Simon Moore umpired the A Grade Final and the U/16 Final. HK&HDCA commenced a new T/20 competition in in five grades, which proved to be very popular with the players. The A Grades T/20 Final was umpired by Steve Wilson. HKHDCUA again presented two Spirit of Cricket awards one for club matches and the other for rep. fixtures. 20 WORKING WITH NDCC The relationship between NDCC and HK&HDCA continues to grow stronger. It was certainly the case in season There were many key opportunities for HK&HDCA and ND s to work together, including: 1. Coaching Clinics: The establishment of the HKHDCCA (Coaches Association) resulted in 3 very successful Coaching Clinic partnerships with ND s. The running of coaching courses by HKHDCCA provides a local opportunity for NDCC players to become accredited and participate in coaching. Thanks go to Bruce Wood for the time and effort that he dedicates to ensure that these are a beneficial experience for all attendees. 2. Rep Selectors & Coaches: Several ND s players were involved with selection and coaching duties throughout the trials and will be involved in coaching reps throughout the coming season. 3. Green Shield Squad Trials: Thanks must go to Tom Richmond for providing more focus in regard to our juniors. Selectors from HK&HDCA joined ND s to achieve what I believe will be greater results in our junior development. 4. Ross Turner Cup: Ross and several ND s committee people attended the game at Kenthurst Oval... A fantastic array of young talent on display. 5. Bradman Scholarship winner: Andrew Lowe from ND s, has been involved with many of these projects and also had a key role in the HK&HDCA Presentation Night. Special thanks to Abbas Aly. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Abbas in his new role as Acting Representative Secretary. ND s looks forward to Triforce becoming a major sponsor of the Club next year. On a social note, it was great to catch up at ND s Presentation Night with many of the Presidents and officials of clubs under the HK&HDCA umbrella... Should be more of it! 21 IN2CRICKET / KANGA CRICKET AROUND THE CENTRES Thornleigh CC in2cricket Centre We started about 10 years ago with Paul Cohen (ex-north Sydney CC member) volunteering to run the program. He did this for 2-3 years with my husband Stuart helping out. Shane Moore then took over for a couple of seasons Shane tragically died after falling over at Westfield Hornsby we have set up the Shane Moore Memorial Trophy given to someone who has shown special support for cricket, i.e. the first year it went to Michael Moore, Shane s son who despite his father passing away, never missed training or a match. Stuart and I ran the program for a couple of years and now Lachlan Reynolds has been the co-ordinator for several years. He has 3 boys, 2 who have gone through the program and 1 still remaining. We have had up to 30 attend with normally only a couple of girls each season, but this season we had 8 girls to 12 boys. Below are a couple of photos that were taken at the SCG in January Carolyn Ball WPHC Kanga Cricket Coming down from last year s 128 Kanga registrations to 100 this season seemed like a bit of a letdown at first. In fact, it proved to be quite a benefit and is in line with our last 7 year average. There were many highlights: We had a record number of volunteers 65 active helpers Every Kanga Team having had a Coach, Assistant Coach, Manager, Gear Steward and Scorer A record number of girls 10 who we are looking at graduating into the Girls Comp next season 57 graduation certificates were given out and we expect 70% of these Kangas to return next season to the U9 s with each team having a trained and supportive administration team. This embeds our Club culture of Participation over results for the next generation of coaches and managers. The Kanga season went like clockwork with the retiring John Coulthard leading a superb team of committed volunteers. Our Chief Coaches, Shaun Jackson and Michael Woolnough did a superb job. The talent and enthusiasm of the Kanga Administration Team continues to amaze. Each year we say, they are the best, and it is always true. Each year those who put their hands up to take on the extra chores of administration just get better and better. This year s team of Glenn O Connor, Jackie Holmes, Shaun Jackson, Michael Woolnough, Andrew Morris and Mike Roberts have worked together like a welloiled machine, leaving nothing to chance and making sure every facet of the Kanga season ran perfectly. 26 KISSING POINT : 50 NOT OUT EST D 1961 KISSING POINT CRICKET CLUB FROM KISSING POINT The Kissing Point Cricket Club today is the result of a merger between the North Turramurra and Kissing Point Cricket Clubs of the 1980s. North Turramurra is the older club, having first played in the HK&HDCA in 1948/49 while Kissing Point joined in the 1961/62 season. During the 1961/62 Season KPCC entered its first sides in the Hornsby Ku-ringgai & Hills District Cricket Association (HK&HDCA) Junior competition. Following in 1965/66 they entered their first side in the HK&HDCA Senior competition in B Grade. Today the club is a very healthy medium size catering for 5 year olds through to the Seniors. ANNIVERSARY MATCH KPCC celebrated its 50th Season on Sunday 20th February 2011 at Auluba Oval and Clubhouse, Auluba Road, South Turramurra. The clubhouse looked fantastic decked out with balloons and bunting in the Club colours. To start the day we had a Junior T20. There was plenty of big batting from KPCC U13s as they set out to hit a big T20 total against the U12s. The U12s eventually emerged narrow winners and the match was notable for some great catching and fielding on both sides, and was played in good spirits, watched by a large crowd. 27 gai Council for its wonderful renovation of the playing facilities at Auluba. Ku-ring-gai Mayor Ian Cross was present to witness the celebrations. The senior One Day side then piled on the runs to comprehensively win their one day match. It was great to see some old stalwarts back down to say hello, including Marty Rhone, Geoff Hasler, Chris Wilkinson and the club s historian, John Orlovich. PINK STUMPS We raised $238 for the McGrath Foundation from the Pink Stumps cake stall, while our terrific volunteers kept the canteen & the BBQ going. This 2010/11 season we also celebrated 4 teams in the Seniors grand finals for the first time, D & D Reserve Grades STORY CONTINUED becoming premiers, had one Junior premier team (U11 reds) & 11 juniors in representative cricket for the HK&HDCA. 30 NORMANHURST-WARRAWEE : T20 STATE CHAMPIONS The Normanhurst-Warrawee U/16 team are the State Twenty20 champions after defeating the Campbelltown Magpies in the Final of the Cricket NSW Weet- Bix T20 competition at the SCG on Sunday, 6 March The boys marvelled at the historic dressing rooms and enjoyed mixing it with Doug Bollinger, Usman Khawaja and Dominic Thornely. Captain Mitch Fullagar won the toss and electing to bat first. Ben Phillips (50 retired) and Raj Chandrasena (30) combined for a classy 62 run second-wicket partnership, which was followed by a brilliant 48 no from captain Mitch Fullagar, including a six off the last ball of the innings. Normanhurst posted the imposing total of 3/144, which would be hard to beat. Normo came out firing with a fierce spell by opener Nathan Tanner (1/12 off 4 overs). Medium pace bowlers Nick Fullagar (1/6) and David O Connor (1/12) kept the runs down and Benny chipped in with 2 wickets to earn Man of Match honours. The Campbelltown Magpies fought bravely in their run chase however finished 24 runs short on 6/120. This was a great team effort, guided by young coaches Matt Nelson and Matt Pendleton. With NWCC winning the inaugural HK&HDCA A Grades T/20 competition earlier this season, as well as strong performances by our U/12 and U/14 teams in the Cricket NSW Weet-Bix T20 competition, our club has developed a fearsome reputation in Twenty20 cricket. 32 John Coulthard, WPHC Director Kanga, ran his last Kanga session on Saturday at Edward Bennett Oval on 11th March. John has been a remarkable volunteer over many years. Just take a moment to appreciate his magnificent contribution: In 2008 John was awarded a 50+ year service recognition pin from CNSW. At the end of this season John will have clocked up 64 years of continuous WPHC : JOHN COULTHARD RETIRES service to cricket as a volunteer John was awarded Life Membership of WPHC in Life Membership of the NSW Churches Union cricket in He Captained WPHC sides between 1983/84 and 1993/94. In his time as Kanga Director, John has looked after 940 Kanga children who have played Kanga. John has developed and enthusiastically administered, a Kanga Program that has directly resulted in: An average 100 Kanga children playing / year over the 8 years he has run the Kangas. This is a remarkable achievement with the demographic of the area ageing and other sports in the area declining. I know people say that we were good because of people like Matt Barr and Brendan Twinning but John was responsible for making the tail wag when it was required and our bowling was very much a team effort as well. 34 HK&HDCA FUNDRAISER : KAI CONNELL This season HK&HDCA ran a raffle to fundraise for Kai Connell. Kai s story is below. At the age of 6 months we noticed that Kai was developing a curved spine. We took him to John Hunter hospital to find the problem. They found that he had Neurofibromatosis type 1 and that he had 3 ribs fused on one side of his spine. This necessitated a small fusion on the outside of this curve at 14 months at the Children s hospital at Alexandria. Just after turning 4 Kai s curve started to get worse and it was determined that he needed more surgery. Without going into details we lost confidence in his surgeon and the system and decided to move to Holland. We had lots of support there as Kai s mum is Dutch. Just before turning 6 Kai s spine was fused for a second time at the Wilhelmina Children s hospital in Utrecht. We stayed in Holland until we were confident the procedure had worked and return when he was 10. A little over a year ago Kai s back started to get worse again. He needed more surgery. At about nine hours into his surgery a blood vessel shut down and stopped blood flow to his spinal cord. He lost all feeling and movement to his legs. After another four hours they had gotten some feeling back and some movement in his right leg. That was four weeks ago. Instead of a week in hospital we are hoping that after seven or eight weeks he will be able to come home. At this stage his left leg is still very poor but we are hopeful that it will get a bit better. We know he won t come out the way he went in but any ANNUAL REPORT improvement is a plus. Kai is an incomplete paraplegic but we don t know what level. It started at T8 but we think it is around T12 now. He will need a wheelchair, maybe a ramp to get out back and so far we have to pay for his prosthetics. Prizes included bats signed by Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Clarke, the Indian Test team and many others. All prize-winners were drawn by Cr Nick Berman, Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council at the conclusion of the Hornsby Shire Council s 611th Citizenship Ceremony - Australia Day, Wednesday 26th January 2011 at the Hornsby RSL Club. We would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of our supporters who kindly donated the prizes (Kookaburra, Noel Moig Agencies, KDSA, Bruce Wood, Mike Rolleston and Andy Bayles), Legends Under Glass who framed the respective bats, the Gussey family who coordinated the raffle, various local businesses, participating HK&HDCA Member clubs, HK&HDCA Executive Members, HK&HDCA Life Members and all others who purchased tickets for this worthwhile cause.

35 HK&HDCA : MOVEMBER MOVEMBER 2010 During November 2010, Mark Rushton and Ben Gussey donned the mo to help raise funds and awareness for men s health in Australia. Funds raised through Movember are distributed to two very worthy causes; the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue the national depression initiative and the Movember Foundation. Mark and Ben may not have the cricketing talent of a Mervyn Hughes or David Boon, but have sprouted something impressive nonetheless. There efforts saw a combined $5000 raised - one of the Association s most successful charity fundraisers. During Movember, Mark Rushton wrote a piece on what the cause meant to him. MARK S STORY I worked in Mental Health and experienced first-hand the devastating effect of male depression in the worst case scenarios. Left untreated, depression leads to increased levels of irritability, isolation, sleep disturbances, early morning waking, feelings of worthlessness, increased alcohol consumption, social isolation and suicidal thoughts which far too often led onto suicide. I went to many funerals of my patients who had so sadly committed suicide. At these funerals the remaining family, friends and acquaintances were always so devastated and often blamed themselves, and were in a terrible state of shock and disbelief. I often thought to myself...if only the suicide victim could see the amount of people that loved him and the devastating impact his suicide has had on so many people... To my mind suicide was never the answer...early detection and treatment of depression surely was the best option. This is why I am raising money for Movember. 36 Triforce Sports continued their relationship with Hornsby Kuring-gai & Hills District Cricket Assocaition for the season. ONGOING SUPPORT Triforce Sports have continued to support the Association in many capacities. Each season Triforce Sports provide a significant monetary contribution. These funds have been put towards Juniors, Representative cricket and the Coaches Association. The relationship with Triforce Sports extends far beyond just a monetary contribution. Abbas Aly, the Director of Triforce, has developed his relationship with our Association on and off the field. ABBAS ROLE IN ASSOCIATION Abbas has played a key role in the ongoing development of cricket within the Association. This season he coached the Under 13 Presidents Cup side, who went through the season as undefeated premiers. His role in the side is on the back of a number of seasons in assisting and coaching Representative cricket and with his club, Redfield College. Abbas has also taken his coaching credentials to the next level by obtaining his level 2 Coaching Certificate. This is a significant achievement and we look forward to Abbas ongoing support in a coaching role. Abbas also took the field this season with the newly formed Annangrove Cricket Club. Abbas played a key role in bringing Annangrove in to the Association, This season they took part in our ANNUAL REPORT Sunday One-Day Competition and hope to expand to our regular Senior Competition in the upcoming season. Abbas has also generously volunteered to stand in to the Representative Secretary role for the upcoming season. This is widely regarded as the most demanding role in the Association. It should ensure that, along with his very successful Triforce business, family, cricket and community commitments he will not have a second to spare! Abbas has already taken on the initiative of moving our Representative trials to the end of the 2010/11 season giving the sides a full off-season to train together. This was done on very short notice and Abbas, along with a great team of volunteers, did a tremendous job in ensuring that it ran smoothly. In addition to all the above work, Abbas took over from our fantastic MC, Simon Smyth, at the Junior & Representative Presentation Night. The night ran very smoothly. For more information on the night, please find our review in the competitions section. NEW INDOOR FACILITIES Behind the scenes, Triforce Sports has worked very hard to expand with a new store and develop an indoor centre at their current location in the Norwest Business Park. Having visited the facilites, I must say that they are absolutely fantastic. The bowling machines have been imported from England and are a level above the Jugs machines commonly used. They have the ability to land the ball on the same spot with each delivery. Balls can also be loaded and the machine automated, ensuring that the machine does not have to be continually fed. The indoor facilities will prove to be a tremendous asset to both Triforce and to our Representative and club sides. SUPPORTING TRIFORCE The Association has reciprocated the relationship with Triforce Sports by encouraging clubs to utilise their incredible prices and offers. Triforce Sports deals have forced their competitors to greatly lower their once exorbitant prices, in attempts to bring back business. I strongly encourage all clubs to support Triforce through the purchase of equipment. It not only encourages the reciprocal relationship but ensures that other retailers are not rewarded for the once unfortunate costs they passed on to clubs and associations. At an Association level, all ball orders and premiership cap orders are now placed through Triforce Sports. The Northern Knights Representative sides will also utilise Triforce Sports as their preferred supplier. The costs are really the best around and those at the Junior & Representative Presentation night would have additionally received a 50% discount off a cricket bat. For example, a bat selling in two other reputable cricket stores would be $700 but cost just $250 at Triforce Sports. This is quite a remarkable saving for players. 50 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT The Season opened, for the first time in its 85 years, with a Twenty20 Knockout Competition, played within combined grades, offering teams an opportunity to participate in this form of the game as an introduction to the season. This innovation proved popular with the vast majority of players and was well supported by the clubs in all grades, and will return in the forthcoming season with some minor adjustments to playing schedules. The traditional Senior Competition followed, with a total of 71 teams in the Saturday Afternoon Competitions and eight teams entered in the Sunday One Day competition. THE PREMIERS The A Grade title was again in the hands of the Asquith Rugby League team, being both the Minor Premiers and completing the season by defeating Berowra in the final, played this year at Waitara Oval. ARL have now completed their sixth successive year as A Grade Premiers and will attempt the record equalling feat of seven, held by the Hornsby Cricket Club (1964/ /71) next season. The Berowra Club enjoyed an extremely successful season, as runners up in A Grade, winning the A Reserve (from 4th place), Colts (Minor Premiers) and B Grade Premierships ANNUAL REPORT (from 2nd place), the Sunday One Day Competition, and significantly, the Senior Club Championship. Congratulations to these Berowra teams and to the club administrators. The remaining premierships were won by: B Reserve St Ives (coming from 4th place), C Grade - WPH-C (Minor Premiers) C Reserve WPH-C Red (Minor Premiers) C3 Grade Normanhurst-Warrawee (coming from 3rd place) D Grade Kissing Point (Minor Premiers) D Reserve Kissing Point (Minor Premiers) The weather was somewhat unkind to the contestants in the Semi Finals, with Day Two virtually a wash out across almost all of the matches, however, the Final weekend, although threatening, did permit the matches to reach a result in the middle, with some loss of overs on both days. Unfortunately, the John Hayne Cup was not conducted due to the lack of suitable grounds, however, it is hoped that this situation can be rectified in coming seasons. SUNDAY ONE DAY COMPETITION The Sunday One Day Competition was extended to eight teams this season, with the Berowra club entering three sides, ARL two teams, together with Kissing Point, St Ives and the newly formed Annangrove team. Two of the Berowra teams contested the final which was played locally at the Warrina St ground, with the Berowra Soccer XI taking the title against the heavily favoured Berowra Maroon team. The SCC sees this competition as a great opportunity for those players unable to commit to the regular Saturday competition, to remain active in the game and encourages all clubs to delve into their past player records and invite them to renew their association with the game through their old club affiliation. It would be ideal to have two grades in place for the forthcoming season. GROUNDS The availability and increased competition for grounds in our three local government areas continues as a major problem, with Saturday Senior Competition games being played on Sundays now an essential practice. It is appreciated that local government cannot readily solve this problem, given their scarce resources, so Sunday cricket rounds are here to stay. NEW LOCAL RULES PUBLICATION During the off season, the Senior Competition Committee met regularly

51 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT within a program to fully revise and update the Senior Competition Playing Rules and met with the clubs to ratify the suggested changes. A new comprehensive booklet including the rules, policies and penalties for the Saturday, Colts and Sunday One Day competitions was published, a worthwhile, but extremely time consuming exercise. It is suggested that only minor changes will be necessary in the immediate future and that this publication will be updated and distributed to every team captain on an annual basis. MYCRICKET WEBSITE Whilst the excellent MyCricket web site is by far the most satisfactory database resource available to the association, it still has its limitations, primarily its inability to capture player ratings in the registration process. This continues to provide problems for the association, and work is currently in progress to improve the registration and rating processes and information flow to clubs. Spreading the News Special thanks are again extended to Tom Richmond and Nathan Tilbury for their continued endeavours to initiate media coverage for our competition, primarily featuring the A Grade teams in the Hornsby Advocate, but a broader base on community radio. This has established a very positive image for the association in the wider community and is of immense value in producing greater awareness of our activities. THE SENIOR COMPETITION COMMITTEE Steve Wilson again headed this group of dedicated volunteers for the vast majority of the season and his contribution to the HK&HDCA has been tremendous throughout his five years in this demanding role. He has pioneered major changes during his tenure, together with his committee and others, introducing a new rating system, the Colts Competition, the Sunday One Day Competition to name but a few of the achievements. Steve also worked to provide the lower grades with improved access to the better grounds and reduced travel across the vast areas of our association. The SCC included Josh Brown, Scott Burrows, John Klingberg, John Mitchell and Geoff Hasler, all of whom gave immense amounts of time and energy to facilitate the Senior Competition, striving to improve the equality and competitiveness of all grades. Whilst this group was under constant pressure from some quarters, they should be acknowledged for their commitment to the tasks they set for the past season. With a number of these men standing down from their roles in the immediate future, their contribution is hereby noted. 68 REPRESENTATIVE COMPETITION REPORT The 2010/11 Representative season was a very successful one for the newly branded Northern Knights. The Under 15 Weblin Shield took out the Premiership, remaining undefeated for the season. The Under 13 Presidents Cup also went through the competition undefeated. Our Under 23 Telegraph Shield made it through to the final, losing valiantly to Hawkesbury. Our Under 15 and Under 16 Presidents Cup sides were runner-ups and our Watson Shield team went down in the semi-finals. All in all, it was a tremendous effort across the board and it bodes well for our future. In particular, here has been a marked improvement in our Presidents Cup sides which has afforded each age group far more depth. From an administrative level, we took the steps of rebranding the Representative sector, to the Northern Knights. This was undertaken to better market the club for potential sponsorship, as well as give the players the sense that they belonged to an elite-level club. The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Association can be a rather cumbersome moniker for young players. We must acknowledge all the tremendous work that has been put in by so many people. I am hesitant to single out any one person, at risk of not mentioning every person. Regardless, it has been a great team effort, from the age convenors, to the coaches, managers, scorers and general volunteers. Season 2011/12 is set to be even bigger and better. The efforts by the Coaches Association to facilitate our U/10 development squad will ensure we head in to the future with deserved optimism. REPRESENTATIVE MAJOR AWARDS E. G. 75 This year s Junior and Representative Presentation Night was held on May 27th, 2011 at Asquith Boys High School. Once again the presentation night was a great success, with many of the award winners and dignitaries in attendance. The night was MCed by Level 2 accredited coach, representative organiser and proud sponsor of HK&HDCA (through Triforce Sports) Abbas Aly. Abbas did a fantastic job and ensured that the presentation night ran smoothly. Special guests for the night included: *Brent Adams (Sydney North Cricket officer for CricketNSW); *Andrew Lowe (Northern District First grade player, Watson Shield coach for the upcoming season and Bradman Scholarship Winner); *Nick Berman (Hornsby Mayor and Patron of the Association); *Denise Annetts (former Australian cricketer); *Col Cooper (Patron and Life Member of the Association); *Alfred James OAM (Patron and Life Member of the Association). Executive Members and Life Members in attendance included Barry McDonald, Bruce Kimberley, Andy Bayles, Ross Anderson, Bruce Wood, Nathan Tilbury and Warren Jackson. As was the case last year, programs were available for a suggested gold coin donation. The programs were fantastically put together and printed by Brian Binfield from Full Point Graphics. Brian helped create a great addition to our presenation night and afford the parents and players a keepsake from the night. Also made available from our sponsors Triforce Sports were JUNIOR & REPRESENTATIVE PRESENTATION NIGHT Loyalty cards that offered bats from the Triforce Sports store for 50% off! This certainly went down a hit with both players and parents alike. In addition to the programs and loyalty cards, Andy Bayles and Bruce Kimberley, manning the front of the hall, sold raffle tickets for an autographed Kookaburra bat, signed by Ricky Ponting. After the programs, loyalty cards and raffle tickets were distributed, the night kicked off. First up were the Junior award winners, with premiership caps, trophies and medals awarded. All of the award winners from the night can be found in the junior section of the Annual Report. After the Junior award winners were announced and presented, the Kookaburra Rising Star Awards were handed out. We must thank Kookaburra for their wonderful ongoing support. Not only were each of the monthly winners presented with a star trophy, they were also presented with $100 worth of Kookaburra gear. The overall winner, Daniel Nicotra (Normanhurst-Warrawee Under 15), was awarded $500 worth of Kookaburra gear, including a fantastic new bat. We were then lucky enough to have current First Grader Andrew Lowe give a speech to the kids about both cricket and setting the right priorities in life. Andrew s experience in cricket is invaluable to our young achievers, as Andrew is still young and facing many of the challenges some of the kids will face in their upcoming experiences. Aside from being a current first-grader, Andrew was also the 2011 Bradman Scholarship winner, which was presented to him by former Prime Minister and former West Pennant Hills player, John Howard. He was also selected in the Under 19 New South Wales City squad in 2009/10. Andrew has also been appointed coach of the 2011/12 Watson Shield (Under 16) side. After Andrew spoke to the kids, the Representative awards were presented to some very high achievers, including the undefeated Under 13 Presidents Cup Premiers and the Representative team of the Year, the undefeated Weblin Shield (Under 15) Premiers. With the completion of the Representative presentation, current Northern District player and Hornsby Mayor Nick Berman spoke to the parents and kids. He singled out the hard-working volunteers that often remain unacknowledged but are vital in ensuring our Representative and Junior programs run smoothly. Nick is also a patron of the Association and his continual attendance of our events do not go unnoticed. Thanks for your kind support Nick! We finished off the evening with Nick drawing the raffle for the Ricky Ponting autographed Kookaburra bat. Again, we thanks Kookaburra for their kind donation of prizes year after year to assist with our raffles. All in all, it was a fantastic night that ran without a problem. 76 ROSS TURNER CUP HK&HDCA s showcase junior representative match called the Ross Turner Cup has been held since and features the outstanding players in our district from the U/15 age group and below. The annual East v. West contest was the brainchild of Tom Richmond, OAM, Life Member and Patron of HK&HDCA, who has done a magnificent job over the past 11 years staging these important fixtures, which are thoroughly enjoyed by the players, parents, officials and special guests. Tom stood down from the role earlier this year and the responsibility was passed onto Bruce Wood, President HKHDCCA (Coaches Association), as this match and the U/13 Glenn Hourigan Cup showcase emerging junior talent and are focused on accelerating the development of our representative standard players. The Ross Turner Cup is named after the former dual 1st Grade premiership captain at Northern District CC who now does great work for the ICC, increasing the participation and popularity of cricket in emerging nations. Ross Turner is Patron of HKHDCCA and supports our junior coaching clinics, which are held during the school holidays in September / October and January. The RTC has unearthed some outstanding cricketers over the years, with at least 13 players graduating to represent First Grade (mainly with ND s). These players include Greg Marks, Michael Friedrich, Matthew Code, David Ball, Scott Rodgie, Matthew Phillips, Timm van der Gugten, Jon Whealing, Robert Watts, David Lowery, James Kerr, Scott Copperfield & Neil Kimberley. ANNUAL REPORT This year s RTC match was set to take place at Parklands Oval on Sunday, 20th March, however was washed out. The match was rescheduled to Kenthurst Oval on Sunday, 3rd April 2011 and some terrific cricket was played between two talented teams. A 100 year old coin (1911 Australian Penny) was used by Ross Turner at the toss, which was won by Connor Jackson, skipper of the HK&HDCA Northern Knights Weblin Shield premiership team in Connor s West team batted first and found the conditions to be challenging, with considerable movement off the seam from the bowlers on a responsive pitch. Nick Miller opened the bowling for the East team and removed both openers, well caught down the leg side by wicket-keeper Albert Watts. Andries Van Weorkom (47) and Rushil Narsai (22) rescued the situation for the West team with a RTC record 4th wicket partnership of 47 runs, taking the score to 3/74, before Nick Miller was reintroduced into the attack. Miller finished with the stunning figures of 6/26 from 8.5 overs, the best bowling return in RTC history, resulting in the West team being all out for 108. Other bowlers in the East team also contributed well, including Daniel Nicotra, Harry Middlebrook, Matt Corish, Luc Modde and Nick McNay. In reply, the East team was under immediate pressure as Sam Howard took two early wickets in an express opening spell for the West team. East captain Utkarsh Somaiya came in at No. 4 to join opening batsman Daniel Nicotra, with their team in trouble on 2/9. Both batsmen played very sensibly, combining excellent defence with rotation of the strike and strong scoring shots when the opportunities arose. Nicotra (56no) and Somaiya (30no) combined for an excellent 3rd wicket partnership of 89 runs, taking their team to within 11 runs of victory and just 6 runs short of the highest partnership in RTC history, before Nicotra was unfortunately retired by his coach. The East team went on to record an emphatic 8 wicket victory. Special thanks are extended to Triforce Sports for supplying the players with their RTC shirts; Kooindah Waters for their sponsorship of HK&HDCA; and the Kenthurst / Upper Hills CC for hosting the match, including curator Peter Wright preparing the pitch on the Saturday and President Col Griffin putting the covers down. 78 GLENN HOURIGAN CUP The Glenn Hourigan Cup contest began in following the success of the annual Ross Turner Cup fixture, which was inaugurated in to promote an opportunity for our best junior players to appear in a showcase game of high level representative cricket. In a new initiative, preliminary T/20 matches were played between four GHC teams at Foxglove Oval, Mt Colah, on Sunday, 27th February Four young coaches were appointed (Josh Miller, Nathan Tanner, Daniel Anderson & James Madden) and they a terrific job. The T/20 matches were a great success with positive feedback received from the players, parents, umpires and officials present. The main Glenn Hourigan Cup (50 over) match brought together the leading U/13, U/12 & U/11 players in the district competing for a trophy named in honour of Glenn Hourigan, a Life Member of HK&HDCA, who gave wonderful service to local representative cricket as the Association s longest serving Representative Secretary from 1988 to This year s GHC match was set to take place at Bannockburn Oval, Pymble, on Sunday, 20th March, however was washed out. The match was rescheduled to Les Shore 1 Oval, Glenorie, on Sunday, 3rd April 2011 and a high standard encounter took place. The East team captain, Taylor Davies, won the toss and elected to bat first. Most of the top-order batsmen made excellent contributions, including Ben Wallwood (33), Taylor Davies (17) and Anthony Johnston (23). An outstanding (unbroken) 6th wicket partnership of 75 runs between Eknoor Singh (40no) and Ben Jones (26no) enabled the East team to reach the highest ever total in GHC history, 5/183 off 50 overs. The pick of the bowlers for the West team was Travis Loxton who took 2/17 off 8 overs. In reply, the West team lost wickets at regular intervals to be all out for 77 runs off 35.4 overs. Matt McVay (21) batted well however he lacked support, as the only other batsman to reach double figures was Dylan Schouten (11). All the bowlers in the East team performed well, although leg-spinner Ben Jones (4/10 off 8 overs) and pace bowler Tom O Loughlin (3/3 off 5 overs) were outstanding. Daniel Heidegger produced a very tidy display as wicket-keeper. The East team recorded an emphatic victory by 106 runs. ABOUT KOOKABURRA It could be argued that Kookaburra would be within its rights to patent the sound of leather on willow such is the pivotal role the brand has played in the evolution of cricket. 83 PUBLICITY REPORT Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Association sought to increase publicty through a number of avenues. ON THE BALL The 2010/11 season saw the commencement of a newsletter, entitled On The Ball. Five monthly editions were released from Edition 1: November 2010 through to Edition 5 : March & April The newsletter was a great platform for the Association to regularly communicate with clubs, provide publicity for sponsors and cover interest stories. Clubs that were featured included Kissing Point, Galston-Glenorie, Berowra, Normanhurst-Warrawee and Ku-ring-gai. Additionally, the newsletter provided an opportunity for monthly updates from our affiliated and governing bodies including CricketNSW, Northern Suburbs Girls Cricket Association, HKHDCCA (Coaches Assocation), HKHDCUA (Umpires Association) and Northern District Cricket Club. Other features in the newsletter included highlighting various fundraising activities, player of the month, senior, junior & representative summaries and highlighting volunteers. On The Ball will be bigger and better in 2011/12 and we strongly encourage clubs, players, supporters and more to submit stories for publication. HORNSBY ADVOCATE HK&HDCA Life Member and Patron, Tom Richmond OAM was again tireless in providing coverage of A Grade matches for local media. The ongoing publicity provided in the Hornsby Advocate is a valuable resource to the Association. In addition to the weekly published article, photos are published online at the Hornsby Advocate website. All articles can be found through the Hornsby Ku-ringgai & Hills District Cricket Association website. WALTER WILSON REPORT The website was host to the popular Walter Wilson Report. The Walter Wilson Report provided weekly updates of our Junior, Senior & Representative competitions, as well as other interest stories. The Walter Wilson Report provides an avenue to encourage users to continue re-visiting the website. We hope to develop this aspect of the website for the upcoming season. TRIFORCE PHOTO OF THE MONTH Our sponsors, Triforce Sports, provided a monthly $100 coupon to their store for the winner of the Triforce Photo of the Month competition. This has proved to be a fantastic initative for the Association. Hundreds of photos have been entered in the competition, giving a colourful insight in to cricket at all levels. Photos are available for viewing on the website and many of the entries adorn the pages of the Annual Report. We again thank Triforce for their ongoing support of this competition. KOOKABURRA ANECDOTE COMPETITION This year saw the commencement of the Kookaburra Anecdote competition. The competition was open for any and all anecdotes, current and historical, within the Association. Prizes included a team allocation (15 tickets) to state matches. We hope to have this competition running throughout the 2011/12 season. Of all sports, cricket continues to provide some of the very best anecdotes so please send in some stories for the new year. FACEBOOK A couple of seasons ago a Facebook group was created for the Association but it has not been a greatly utilised feature. With the ability to easily communicate with users, a new page has been created. We will endeavour to update users with the latest weather updates, events and important news. I strongly encourage all Facebook users to join the page as Facebook is becoming an increasingly powerful method to communicte with people. Through my own anecdotal experience, many captains are exclusively using Facebook to organise teams. 84 The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Association website has been a virtual hub for communication over the last few seasons. With the Junior, Representative and Senior sections now streamlined, the website has continued to develop. IMPORTANT UPDATES The website is now used as the central hub for communication with clubs for important and urgent information. This includes the ceased use of the wet weather line. Wet weather, cover rosters and ratings changes for the senior competition are all available on one page. This allows a quick access point for this information for all players, managers and captains within the Assocation, as opposed to the burden being placed on clubs. This is particularly important for late information that may not be accessed by a club secretary until after the weekend. DOCUMENT ACCESS The website has allowed the Association to maintain a virtual library of documents, WEBSITE rules, report and minutes. All Council minutes are placed on the website after each meeting. Annual Reports and competition reports are uploaded and stored on the website. Many of our historical scores and results are available on the website. The previously used database, Isport, is in the process of being converted over to mycricket by Cricket Australia. This will give access back to scores and results from the duration of time the Association utilised the Isport database. As this is an incredibly lengthy project, there has been no set date for completion. The website has also provided an excellent platform to distribute promotional material, such as the On The Ball newsletter and sponsorship information. REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET The newly branded Northern Knights have integrated outside hosting with the website to provide a possible future direction for clubs. With clever use of facilities they have created a nomination form that provides easily collected data and takes out a great deal of administrative work. Unfortunately, one of the restrictions with the mycricket facilities is the inability for users to independently register. Instead, a club administrator has to enter user information for each player. Although the Northern Knights solution ultimately provides the same burden for clubs, it does allow an easy registration point at the commencement of the season. FUTURE DIRECTION After investigating many Association websites, I believe ours provides as much content as any other. Possible improvements for future consideration include the merging of the ratings system in to the player statistics. Additional weekly features, such as coaching articles or videos could also provide an excellent addition to the website. As always, we welcome any other suggestions. 85 AROUND THE GROUNDS THE HILLS SHIRE COUNCIL Les Shore No. 1 (formerly Glenorie Oval No. 1) History: First used in 1963/64 season and opened by Neil Marks on 7 September 1963 during a match between Glenorie C.C. and a Northern District C.C. XI. Enlarged about 1975 and officially named the les Shore Oval. Mr Shore is a Life Member of the Association and a former Mayor of Baulkham Hills Shire Council (now called The Hills Shire Council). The iconic image of the new Les Shore Pavilion was opened in November The official opening was well attended by many associated with the Galston-Glenorie CC, HK&HDCA and many dignitaries. Neil Marks officially opened the pavilion on the day. Wrights Road Reserve (Cnr. Harrington Avenue and Wrights Road, Kellyville) History: Multi-purpose recreation and sporting fields which includes: Disabled Access, Disabled Access Toilets, Cycling Tracks, Walking Tracks, Parking and two multi-use Playing Fields. The smaller field is suitable for Junior Cricket only (up to U/11 age group), whilst the larger playing field will cater to the needs of both Junior and Senior Cricketers. The fields was opened for sporting use in the second half of the 2010/11 season, though the Association nor affiliated clubs, were not able to secure usage. Extensive work behind the scenes by the Association, Castle Hill R.S.L. C.C. and Kenthurst-Upper Hills CC has seen Sunday usage secured for the 2011/12 season. Kellyville C.C. (Parramatta D.C.A.) have secured usage for Saturdays, though the door has been left open for further discussions and possible shared usage by both Associations. This is a good example of Community Sporting Bodies working in partnership, which The Hills Shire Council need to be applauded for their direction, support and mediation. Together with Castle Hill RSL CC, Kenthurst-Upper Hills CC and The Hills Shire Council, the Association have negotiated use of these two new fields (1 x senior size / 1 x younger junior size) on Sundays during the 2011/12 season. We may also be able to gain limited Saturday use of these grounds, in consultation with Kellyville CC who play in the neighbouring Parramatta Cricket Association. HORNSBY SHIRE COUNCIL Cheltenham Oval (Beecroft) History: Used by the Association from 1926/27 until Cheltenham Beecroft C.C. transferred to Northern Districts C.A. in 1935/36. For the first time in many years, the Association was able to negotiate with Hornsby Shire Council and NDCA use of Cheltenham Oval, albeit limited Sunday usage. Greenway Park No. 2 (Cherrybrook) History: Greenway Park was opened in 1993/94. Baseball was granted the No. 1 Oval. A new replacement concrete pitch / synthetic surface was embraced by the Association at the start of the season. Together with much improved drainage, by all reports more games were able to be played in wet conditions. Council need to be applauded for their work and support as the Association contributed the cost of the astro-turf. Total Cost: $3, (GST inclusive) Hayes Oval (formerly Galston Oval) History: In 1951/52 members of the Association and Hills District C.C. cleared all the timber off the parklands adjacent to the picnic ground, pegged out an oval 120 metres in diameter and moved a small shed from the picnic ground. A concrete pitch was laid the following year and the ground was first used for competition matches in 1955/56. The ground was greatly enlarged in the early 1980s and incorporated an old trotting track. At the time it had a centre Astroturf pitch and two parallel malthoid pitches. Since 1995/96 it has been allocated to Hills Hawks Baseball Club on Saturday mornings. The Association are pleased to announce we have been able to negotiate with Council and Hornsby District Softball Association, school holiday usage for the 2011/12 season. Headen Park (Thornleigh) History: In 1947/48 the Association negotiated a three-year lease of the then Fellowship Park which was owned by the Presbyterian Church. The site was bought in by Hornsby Council and re-named after Cr. Harry Headen, President of the Shire from 1954 to The Association are grateful to Council for the replacement of the previously worn synthetic surface prior to the commencement of the season, which had been playing increasingly low for a number of years. Strangely, the old astro-turf surface had been reported as being.dangerous to batsmen due to the low bounce at one Association Council Meeting during the 2009/10 season. James Park (Hornsby) History: Opened 1936, renovated 1949/50 and first used by the Association in 1952/53. Named after Cr. Paul James, 12 times Shire President between 1916 and Six practice nets were opened by Cr. Steven Pringle, Mayor, on 5 December The nets were funded by Hornsby Shire Council ($9,000), the Association ($5,000.00), Northern Metropolitan Cricket Council ($9, from the Coca-Cola Runs for Australia Programme), Northern 85 ANNUAL REPORT

86 AROUND THE GROUNDS : CONTINUED District C.C. ($2,500.00) and the Doug Walters Trust Fund ($2,500.00). Following lengthy consultations with the local community and other user sporting groups, the Association was successful in obtaining a State Government funded Community Building Partnerships (CBP) grant for $28, (GST inclusive) for: a new replacement concrete pitch / synthetic surface; repairs to the damaged batting ends in each of the 6 practice nets; and new electric twin BBQs to be installed nearby to the practice nets. Council will also be: removing the existing concrete pitch; supplying the new concrete slab and electricity for the twin BBQs; installing solarpowered lighting to the storage sheds; and relocating the existing aluminium benches which are presently located in dangerous places for players whilst fielding balls either during games or practising in the nets, all at no additional cost to the Association. Normanhurst Park History: Opened 7 November 1925 after work by members of Normanhurst C.C. By 1929/30 it was over-run with bladey grass. Reconstructed and enlarged 1968/69. Pavilion later added. A new replacement concrete pitch / synthetic surface was also warmly embraced by the Association at the start of the season. Together with much improved drainage, it was reported more games were able to be played in wet conditions. Council need to be sincerely thanked for their work and support as the Association contributed the cost of the astro-turf. Total Cost: $3, (GST inclusive) KU-RING-GAI COUNCIL In November 2005 Council resolved to implement a program for the development of Landscape Master Plans for Ku-ring-gai s District Parks. District Parks have features that attract ANNUAL REPORT people from outside the immediate neighbourhood like a unique landscape character, or large areas of open space for active and passive recreation. Grounds used by the Association which benefited from Council s major improvements this season include Sir David Martin Memorial Field (Auluba) and the Comenarra Sports Field. Bannockburn Oval History: Opened 1935/36 as North Pymble Oval and immediately considered the best ground in the district. Reconditioned in 1947/48 and named Bannockburn Oval from 1966/67. In 1980 it had a concrete pitch on the eastern side. Lost to Kuring-gai Little Athletics Association in the morning since The Dressing Shed was opened on 20 December 1986 by Cr. Ron. Yeates, Mayor. Circumference: 419m. A new replacement synthetic surface (astro-turf) was replaced by the Association during the season. Total Cost: $3, (GST inclusive) Comenarra Sports Field History: Used for Juniors only from about 1980/81. Size: 117m x 81m. A new replacement concrete pitch / synthetic surface will be available for use by our juniors again at the start of the 2011/12 season. Together with much improved drainage, it is suggested more games will be played in wet conditions. George Christie Playing Field History: Opened 1966/67. Previously for juniors only. Known as Yanilla Avenue Reserve until 1978 when it was re-named after the first Mayor of the Municipality in Size: 128m x 76m. A new replacement synthetic surface (astro-turf) was replaced by the Association during the season. Total Cost: $4, (GST inclusive) Samuel King Oval (formerly North Turramurra Oval) History: Constructed in 1947/48 by the North Turramurra Progress- Association and Ku-ring-gai Council. Re-named Samuel King Oval about 1985 after an early land-owner in the district (formerly known as Irish Town ). Lost for morning junior games to Gordon D.C.A. (North Shore JCA) in 1999/00. Size: 90m x 90m. A new replacement synthetic surface (astro-turf) was replaced by the Association during the season. Total Cost: $2, (GST inclusive) Sir David Martin Memorial Field (formerly Auluba Oval) History: Used since 1966/67. The first synthetic pitch in the district, made of Grasstex, was built in Two practice wickets in the south-east corner were replaced by the present two nets in Now named the Sir David Martin Field after a former Governor of N.S.W. Circumference: 421m. Massive improvements, including a new concrete pitch / synthetic surface were made to the ground by Council prior to the commencement of the 2010/11 season. SCHOOLS Northholm Grammar School History: Opened 2000/01. Originally for juniors use only. A new replacement synthetic surface was replaced by the Association during the season. Total Cost: $4, (GST inclusive) Footnote: The respective histories of the above ground has been copied with verbal permission from former long-standing HK&HDCA President, Alfred James OAM, author of Summer Saturdays. This reference book is widely recognised as an accurate history of the HK&HDCA (1926/ /2000).

87 VALE : LES SHORE HK&HDCA was saddened to hear of the passing of Leslie John North Shore on 16 June 2011 at the age of 80. Les Shore was elected a Life Member of the Association in 1974, principally in recognition of his work as manager of Martin and Telegraph Shield representative teams for 13 years. He was best known in the district as a councillor of Baulkham Hills Shire Council, where he served for 39 years until his retirement in 2008, which included 5 years as Shire President Photo: Les Shore Les Shore becomes the first individual to receive the key to Baulkham Hills Shire. ( ). During his mayoralty he was also a Patron of the Association. Many players from the Hills District also knew him as Headmaster of Castle Hill Public School and a member of a family which was very prominent in the old Glenorie-Hills District Cricket Club. He had a lot to do with the enlargement of Glenorie Oval and the establishment of a second ground in recognition of which the site was later named The Les Shore Playing Fields. A life-long cricket lover and member of Glenorie Cricket Club since 1947, Les was instrumental in organising celebrations to open the new cricket pavilion at Les Shore Oval in November Mr Shore was the first individual to be awarded the key to Baulkham Hills Shire. His funeral was held on Friday, 24 June at the Anglican Church of St Jude s at Dural. HK&HDCA extends its sincere condolences to the Shore family. 88 VALE : BOB SOMERVILLE (9 JULY APRIL 2011) It is with great sadness that we report that Bob Somerville passed away suddenly on 15 April 2011, aged 62. He died peacefully in his sleep. Bob was President of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association for 5 years from to and also held a number of other Executive positions. He was Chairman of the Northern Metropolitan Cricket Council for the past three years, and Chairman (& HK&HDCA Delegate) of the Hornsby Shire Sports Council. He also served as President of the Hornsby Sports Advisory Committee for two years. Bob was an administrator for the Hornsby Heights Cricket Club, being a club delegate at HK&HDCA meetings in the late 1990 s. Bob was Secretary of the local umpires association from 1999 to 2001, training and allocating local umpires. He umpired for many years in the local HK&HDCA senior competition as well as representative matches. HKHDCUA records show that ANNUAL REPORT he officiated in 55 matches for our association since Bob joined the NSW Umpires & Scorers Association on 1st March 1995 and became a full member on 1st July He officiated regularly in SCA Grade and Shires competitions and completed 187 matches, mainly in the lower grades. Bob took on the role of mentor in standing with many new umpires over the past few years. Darrell Hair, NSWCUSA Executive Officer, attended Bob s funeral as a mark of respect to his contribution to that State umpiring body. Bob completed his Level 2 cricket coaching accreditation in 2001 and was involved in coaching at club and grade level. He possessed a sharp cricket mind and was often quite incisive in his thoughts on the modern game. Bob was a familiar figure around the northern suburbs grounds where he arrived at cricket events on his yellow Ducati motorbike. Bob s five years as HK&HDCA President were probably the highlight of his cricket career as he worked hard in negotiations with Councils and other sporting bodies for the benefit of local cricket. He did a massive amount of work behind the scenes, securing grounds and other resources. Bob played a significant role in organising one of our famous crashings of a Hornsby Council meeting in the early 2000 s when they were threatening to withdraw some turf pitches. He rallied a large group of approximately 160 club players and officials to storm a Hornsby Council meeting to make our views abundantly clear to the Councillors. This people protest was successful in overturning any loss of turf grounds, which was appreciated by our A Grade, representative and later Colts players. Bob took a keen interest in Hornsby Council activities and ran for the Council in the late 1990 s as an independent. He also played the politics with his cricket administration, being strongly opinionated and not afraid to cross swords with other officials or colleagues. He had a wide network of contacts within the cricket community who he would regularly ring or meet with for coffee and a lengthy chat. Bob also had a compassionate side, as he cared for his elderly mother and took time to visit sick friends in hospital and rehabilitation. Bob s funeral took place on Friday, 29th April 2011 at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium, North Ryde, and was attended by his family and friends, as well as a range of identities from the cricket community. He was a larger than life character and will be missed by many people. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to his dear mother Gladys, partner Kath and two children, his sons Kieran & Andrew (Andrew s partner Zanna) & baby Tegwin (Bob s delightful 8 month old granddaughter). Rest In Peace.

89 VALE : DARREN RUSSEL PATRICK EGELHOFF It was with great sadness that Darren Egelhoff passed away on the 17th February, Darren had bravely endured and battled with a rare form of cancer. Darren came to the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Association through the Normanhurst- Warrawee Cricket Club. Darren was primarily a fast bowler who did not have too many pretensions about his batting skills. Darren s friendships extended well beyond his own cricket club. Although he retained his friendships at Normanhurst-Warrawee, he developed friendships with players from a number of different cricket clubs. These friendships saw him move to the St Ives Cricket Club for a few brief appearances in 2008/09 season. Darren also had a number of appearances leading the bowling attack for the Martin Shield (Open age Representative Cricket). Unfortunately, Darren s illness prevented a return to cricket. His final appearance in the Asssociation was as a spectator in the A Grade Grand Final between West Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook and Asquith Rugby League in 2009/10. Darren had hoped to return to cricket with his friends at West Pennant Hills- Cherrybrook. Darren s great love outside cricket was his music. Darren attended the Australian Institute of Music (AIM) where he was a much loved member of the community. Beyond the hallways of AIM, Darren could often be seen with his drumsticks and loved to talk about music. The tribute from AIM is below and we whole heartedly echo the sentiments regarding Darren s nature. Darren was a kind, warm hearted person and loved his music. You couldn t meet a more friendly student and he always had a smile. He was well known and liked amongst staff and student body and we are all very sad to learn of his passing at this time. AIM is a place where hundreds of young people come each year to follow their dreams and passion for music and Darren was no exception. Music was his life. We will miss you Darren. You will not be forgotten and your music and personality will continue to live on in the hearts and lives of those who knew you. RIP Darren, you were taken far too early.
