2 THE PATHWAY THROUGH A LIFETIME OF CRICKET Most cricketers start their playing career at an early age in the backyard with Test Matches against Mum, Dad or their siblings. Playing rules are simple a boundary four into the rose bushes, but over the fence into the neighbour s yard is six and out, plus having to go and recover the ball! Just as the child starts his/her formal education at kindergarten level, Kanga (or, as it has been rebadged over the years for marketing purposes, Milo Cricket and In2Cricket) is the kindergarten of a club which, like the school system, is the first step in the pathway that takes the child to a possible lifetime of involvement in and enjoyment from the game. At that age, children and their parents are reluctant to move straight into competitive hardball cricket, but are looking for an introductory non-competitive skills and fun based structured program to introduce them to the present day game. Thank you to our Sponsors All Clubs, members and associates are encouraged to support the products and/or services provided by our various sponsors This starting platform allows development of hand/eye co-ordination and cricket skills but importantly sees the child become active and socialising in a team/group environment. It also gives mums, dads and even grandparents an opportunity to participate and be involved in the activity with their children and thus build stronger family relationships and, for the club, provides a source of parent volunteers in the future as the child advances through the junior age groups. There is no such thing as a good or bad Kanga player and this concept can lead to it becoming part of a club s culture with the possible adoption of a participation over results policy that embraces the aim of giving equal opportunity to every player within each team and age group. As the child moves through primary and secondary levels at school (years 1 to 12), so too he/she advances from Kanga through the junior age groups from Under 8 to Under 16 gaining knowledge and further skills, forming lasting friendships with fellow teammates as well as an appreciation of the meaning of the phrase The Spirit of Cricket which would hold them in good stead in their life outside the cricket arena. At the same time, they might test their ability and acquired skills against others of similar age beyond their normal weekly competition game by becoming available for selection in their Association Representative teams. Having reached the age of 16, the player graduates to the equivalent of tertiary education level Seniors where, like education, rankings start to be made on ability. After many continuous years of cricketing in this area, the player is entitled to be known as a Graduate of the School of Hard Knocks in Cricket and, as an Alumni, to play with similar age players in Over 40 s Masters or Over 50 s Classics matches. Upon retirement from active play, the player, by then a senior in both age and experience, might become an umpire! 4 HK&HDCA PRESIDENT S REPORT 2013/14 SEASON Once again I m pleased to tell you the 2013/14 season ran very smoothly across the board for the HK&HDCA, that is despite having a massive spike in our team/player numbers across all levels (senior, junior & In2Cricket). As almost always occurs following an away Ashes campaign that shows our national cricket team on main stream television leading into the Australian Cricket season, interest in cricket peaks. This year it helped boost our Junior teams numbers by 10%. This was especially pleasing at the U/8 and U/9 age groups where team numbers were up by a massive 45% on last season. To help our junior participation growth and retention remain healthy, I am extremely pleased to see our Coaches Association once again held a range of successful school holiday cricket clinics during the season as well as various off-season development programs during winter. The feedback I get from these clinics has always been very positive and the Coaches Association s efforts make a significant positive impact on the development of junior players and on club registration numbers around July. Congratulations to Bruce Wood and his team of coaches in this important area. Congratulations to Kenthurst Upper Hills for winning the Junior Club Championship in 2013/14. Although they did not win any Junior Premierships they are in a significant rebuilding phase. In their senior A grade team they included a number of very young, but very talented cricketers in their top team in 2013/14. It is very pleasing to see that club has yet another crop of young star cricketers coming through their ranks. Congratulations to Bruce Kimberley and his team of volunteers who once again managed our junior competitions like a well-oiled machine. This season Bruce and his team organized junior competitions for 122 teams from 14 clubs which is always a challenge. We are very fortunate to have such committed, experienced and fair minded volunteers such as Bruce to run this crucial part of our Association. A special mention to the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook club who had five teams competing in junior finals, and won two junior premierships. Their finalists include a joint team with Kenthurst Upper Hills that made the U/15 final. This just goes to show that joint club teams can be very successful. The West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Club also needs to be recognized for their impressive achievements in the senior competitions including defending their A grade premiership in a very exciting but rain restricted Final at Parklands Oval, against ARL. They also won B1, C1 and C3 grades to give them an impressive four senior premierships. Congratulations to the Galston/ Glenorie club for taking out the senior club championship for the first time in that club s history. In seniors the Association fielded a record equaling 82 teams across our 10 grades, which was an increase of five teams from the previous season. We again started our competitive senior season with T20 competitions for an additional 48 teams. The five T20 competitions had five separate club Premiers which is always pleasing to see the success so well spread. For the past couple of seasons 2 Association has been actively supporting clubs to boost their grassroots In2Cricket centres or if a club didn t have a centre, to launch one. This has been successfully embraced by most clubs which includes three new club centres in St Ives/Wahroonga, Galston/Glenorie and Asquith RL. In the case of St Ives/Wahroonga they have grown their junior/in2cricket numbers impressively from zero to over 100 in just three seasons. This is a huge credit to that club and their dedicated volunteers and they will reap the benefits of their hard work at all levels for many seasons to come. At Representative level the HK&HDCA once again saw Bruce Parker at the helm. Individually the Junior Shield teams did very well and qualified for three Junior Shield finals in the Watson (U/16), Weblin (U/15) and Cawsey (U/12). On the day of the finals we took home just the one premiership in Weblin who won by 4 wickets. In 2012/13 our Junior Representative teams collectively managed the impossible by winning the Shell Shield (for best performing Association) for the first time in our history. Well this season amazingly we retained the Shell Shield proving their previous season s efforts were no fluke. This achievement is a tremendous result and came about through the dedicated all round effort from all our Shield teams, their support crew and the entire Representative Committee. It is once again a just reward for the extensive work and energy given to our Reps over recent seasons. In our Senior Representative competitions we entered teams in each of the three competitions being Durham (U/19), Telegraph (U/23) and Martin Shield (open age). All teams had wonderful seasons with Durham and Telegraph qualifying for their Finals (Martin were knocked out in their Semi Final). Our Telegraph Shield team once again successfully

5 HK&HDCA PRESIDENT S REPORT 2013/14 SEASON: Continued defended their title to complete three successive seasons unbeaten for this very special team. Durham did one better than last season and also won their Premiership by defeating Sutherland by 3 wickets at Storey Park. These wonderful results from our Senior Rep. teams meant we took out the Searle Shield (for best performing Senior Association) for the first time in our history. Despite winning both the Shell Shield and Searle Shield somehow the NSWDCA found a reason (which is still unknown to us) to NOT to award us the Meyer Shield (best performing Association for combined Junior & Senior performances) and we ran a close second to Parramatta! Congratulations to all involved for these impressive Rep. results, especially Bruce and his tireless Rep. Committee. It is no coincidence that we have other Associations sniffing around us or through Cricket NSW to try to find out the secrets to our success. However there is no secret to hard work and team work, both of which were crucial ingredients to our success. There is no doubt the success at the Senior Rep. level comes from the junior success of previous seasons being fed through. Our considerable success at both these levels over recent seasons can also be seen at other levels of cricket in our local area with a number of former HK&HDCA players heavily involved with the Northern District Grade Club s success this season. Our local Grade club made the Final in both Second and Third Grades and won the Third grade premiership. NDs also won the Sydney First Grade One Day Competition and finished second in the Club Championship. This was their most impressive season for decades. I m very proud of the healthy relationship we have developed with our local grade club in recent seasons and it is pleasing that we can share in each other s success because of these strong links. NDs proudly house the five Representative Shields (Weblin, Shell, Searle, Durham & Telegraph) we won in 2013/14 in their Austen Hughes Clubhouse room at Mark Taylor Oval. So in short we fielded representative teams at all levels in Juniors and Seniors (this is something no other Association did in 2013/14). We organized competitions for a record number of teams at junior and senior levels, who played their cricket, at all levels, at amongst the highest standard in our history. Not a bad season! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Association s sponsors that play a significant role in our growth, development and success at all levels of the Association. The funds raised in 2013/14 from our relationships with the following sponsors set a new record for the HK&HDCA: Hornsby RSL Kookaburra Sports Triforce Sports Kooindah Waters Golf Resort Eylex (Rep. teams) I know our sponsors were pleased to hear the HK&HDCA used their funds on further developing our Association, which included purchasing a new bowling machine for our Coaches Association and Reps. as well as sponsoring a number of our young coaches increase their qualifications. I would ask you to continue to support those who so generously support the HK&HDCA! Thanks also to our three local Councils (Hornsby Shire Council, Hills Shire Council and Ku-ring-gai Municipal Council) that host our Association s matches on their fields. They provided quality grounds for our In2Cricket, junior, senior and representative teams. This includes turf wickets for the U/15 and U/16 finals. 3 I d also like to recognize the many local schools that allow us use of their grounds on Saturdays for our competitions. Without their support we simply would not have sufficient grounds to run our competitions. I would especially like to mention Barker College who, for the past decade or so, have allowed this Association to play our home U/15 and U/16 Rep. Shield matches at their magnificent No. 1 turf wicket ground. This is both a privilege and a pleasure for all that are lucky enough to either watch or play in a match at the school. As far as I m concerned the major HK&HDCA focus in 2014/15 will be on grounds. We will be actively trying to support our three local Councils to bring on line any possible new grounds in the immediate future and upgrade/repair many of the current grounds we use. As well as this your Executive will be implementing strategies with the Councils that will potentially give us a long term and security of tenure for the turf wicket grounds we use, by giving our clubs more responsibility for those turf wicket squares. The intention is to phase in the process whilst potentially increasing the number of turf wicket grounds available to our clubs possibly as soon as the coming season. Finally thanks to my fellow Executive members as well as our many and extensive Club committee members and the many other volunteers that contribute their valuable time and effort nearly all year round for local cricket. 8 HK&HDCA COUNCIL REPORTS HK&HDCA Publicity Report The Association places significant priority on maintaining accurate information in a range of media which is readily accessible to our players, officials and the general cricket community. Our website continues to be our main source of information, with the HK&HDCA senior & junior rules, draws, competition tables, statistics and historical records stored on the MyCricket database. The HK&HDCA website consistently gets over 12,500 hits per month and includes a number of interesting features, including relevant information covering representative cricket; the Coaches Association; Umpires Association; Sponsors; Newsletters; Minutes of meetings; Annual Reports; the Association s Constitution; policies & insurance; Life Members; Patrons & office bearers; availability of ovals (wet weather procedures); media articles; local Council information; links to member clubs and kindred bodies; and links to relevant photo galleries. HK&HDCA interacts with the Hornsby Advocate, Hills News and North Shore Times local papers to maximise opportunities to promote our competitions, results and special matches. HK&HDCA Patron and Life Member, Tom Richmond OAM, has continued to work closely with the A Grade captains and the Hornsby Advocate newspaper to produce a popular weekly feature article on the back page every Thursday during the season. In addition to our website and communications, HK&HDCA utilises several popular online media streams, with a dedicated page on Facebook (facebook.com/hkhdca); LinkedIn (linkedin.com/company/hkhdca) and Twitter (twitter.com/hkhdca). Our Association has many wonderful stories and achievements to share with the cricket community and will continue to maximise all forms of available publicity next season and beyond. HK&HDCA recognises and appreciates the wonderful support of our major corporate sponsors, Triforce Sports, Kooindah Waters, Kookaburra Sport and Hornsby RSL. For this reason, our sponsors logos feature prominently on our homepage, with a direct link to the sponsors websites. The printed HK&HDCA business cards for key Executive members promote our Association and also promote our four sponsors with their colour logos on the back. The sponsors logos are also included in all correspondance and major HK&HDCA publications, including the Annual Report. HK&HDCA D&D Report There were five matters referred to the Disputes & Disciplinary Committee (D&D) in the season. Not one of these was necessary. WHY? It is the responsibility of every player, every captain, every coach, every team manager, every umpire, every Club official, every Association official and even every parent and every spectator to ensure that all participants (and that includes spectators) are provided with a reasonable opportunity to enjoy the sport in which they participate. Each of the five matters referred to the Disputes & Disciplinary Committee this season could easily have been avoided if the person or persons involved in each matter had taken a few seconds to consider whether the action 6 they were about to undertake was in the best interests of EVERYONE involved or whether they were simply about to say or do something that was either UNREASONABLE OR SELFISH. In accordance with the guidelines introduced during the season each matter was referred by the Disputes & Disciplinary Committee Chairman to the Clubs involved prior to making a recommendation to the Executive as to whether a formal hearing is required. On each occasion the investigation by the Club President, and in some instances the imposition of penalties, has meant that each of the five matters has been resolved to the satisfaction of the Disputes & Disciplinary Committee Chairman and the HK&HDCA Executive without the need to hold a formal hearing. While Clubs are to be congratulated for their efforts in helping players, coaches, managers, parents and officials understand their responsibilities under the Code of Conduct, the Spirit of the Game, the Laws and the local Playing Conditions there is clearly more work that needs to be done. For may I suggest to all participants that they take a moment to consider how their actions are viewed by others before saying or doing something, that with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, they may regret - possibly for many years to come. 11 The HK&HDCA is extremely fortunate to have Hornsby RSL as our sponsor partner. We have just completed our third year together and I am pleased to say they will continue into 2014/15. Hornsby RSL has given the Association and many of our affiliated groups a true home location to meet and socialize. The RSL is a terrific fit for the HK&HDCA and I can truly say it is an excellent location for the many meetings we hold throughout the year as well as hosting our various sub-committee meetings and our affiliated bodies such as the Umpire s and Coach s Association meetings. Post meeting we can enjoy a relaxing drink together which has created a healthy social scene for all involved. This helps assure that our meeting attendance numbers are strong which is crucial. The RSL also hosts our largest and most prestigious event in the Junior/Representative Presentation by kindly provided their excellent Showroom facilities for our use. Again in 2013/14 this event was extremely well supported with over 500 people in attendance to appropriately review our most successful representative season ever and recognize the highest achievers. The RSL is also a great location to host our less formal events such as our season launch (mid July) and annual Christmas Drinks (late November) which have become very popular and enjoyable annual events. 13 THE HILLS SHIRE COUNCIL I would like to thank Hills Shire Council for their support in 2013/14 in regards to making available and preparing their grounds for the HK&HDCA. Over the past six months this Council has undergone a number of senior management and structural changes and it is believed and sincerely hoped that these changes will improve the Association s relationship with Hills Shire Council and benefit our members, as well as members of other sports Associations and clubs. Your Executive need to work with the new senior management at Hills Council and the Councillors themselves to help them focus on addressing the shortage of grounds available to us from that Council. This is a particular issue in the West Pennant Hills Valley area where we currently have access to no grounds at any level but where our largest club directly pulls 33% of their membership. There is potential for new grounds in this area and more work needs to be done to realise these opportunities. Another more serious concern continues to be the future of Kenthurst No. 1 ground s turf wicket. The HK&HDCA Executive have put forward a proposal that if implemented will save Council on their current costs for turf wicket maintenance and secure the future of the turf wicket at that ground for the HK&HDCA at an affordable level. However at the time of writing this report (late June) we have yet to have Council agree to implement our proposal. Kenthurst No. 1 ground has a quality turf wicket and preserving it is crucially important to the balance of our A grade competition and continued development of junior cricketers from the Club s on that side of our Association s boundary. This Association will continue to do everything in its power to retain that turf wicket at an affordable level for use by our cricketers. Nathan Tilbury HK&HDCA President 11

14 COUNCIL REPORTS: Continued KU-RING-GAI COUNCIL Once again, the Association has been provided with excellent turf pitches at both of The Glade and Turramurra Oval, and we extend our sincere appreciation to the ground staff, the Sportsfield Maintenance Supervisor, Peter Barrett, for his total cooperation in the management of our grounds, and to the Team Leader, Phil Imber and groundsman, Christian Barret, who prepared Turramurra and The Glade respectively. The tremendous improvement in the presentation of the quality of the turf pitches and the outfields continues under thus very committed team. This has been the tenure of the feedback from both the team captains and the umpires throughout the season, although, due to the rain in the last few weeks of our season, we were unable to utilise these grounds to the fullest. The remaining grounds across this local government area have also been in excellent condition this past season, and given that the weather conditions were conducive to good growth, the consistency of the mowing throughout the season presented our lower grades with great playing conditions. In addition, it is appropriate to recognise the total cooperation extended by the Grounds Administration team of Guy Thomas and Matthew Joyce. Their willingness to adjust to our requests for assistance has been greatly appreciated. As our association continues to grow and demand for sporting facilities increases, we are heartened to see the on-going development of the North Turramurra Project. This project, when completed in , will provide an additional three playing fields, which we will be sharing with the other summer sports. Geoff Hasler HK&HDCA Vice President HORNSBY SHIRE COUNCIL Hornsby Shire Council (HSC) prepare the majority of Council grounds our Association uses and they have always provided us with excellent facilities at all levels of cricket, this season was no different. Once again HSC provided top quality turf wickets for our premier senior competitions; A Grade and Kookaburra Cup and many of our representative team s home matches. I would like to sincerely thank Geoff Witt, HSC Parks Service Unit Coordinator, and his two dedicated groundsmen, Kristian Mitchell (Berowra & Parklands) and Darren Green (Storey & Asquith) for the great work and service they provided again this summer. These guys take lot of pride in their work and obviously enjoy what they do. This is reflected in the quality of pitches they consistently produce for our best cricketers. We will continue to work with HSC senior management and Hornsby Councillors to help bring forward badly required new sportsground facilities, particularly in the West Pennant Hills area where the situation for both summer winter sports has also reached a critical point. Hornsby Council continued to upgrade their grounds and facilities. In recent times Cheltenham Oval, Greenway No. 2 and Foxglove North and South grounds have received significant work. The end result being much better grounds to play on even after heavy rainy periods because of the considerable improvement in these grounds drainage. It is pleasing to see Montview East and West is scheduled in for similar attention shortly as it is much needed at these grounds. During the winter the Executive have been working closely with Hornsby Council to discover ways how we can more efficiently use their facilities, in particularly their turf wicket grounds. The intention is for the cricketers to take more ownership of these facilities and give the Association more security in terms of retaining these facilities in the long term future. 15 NORTHERN SYDNEY GIRLS CRICKET ASSOCIATION What a season! With three Saturday afternoon competitions, a record number of girls selected for reps and the formation of the Little Breakers League, there is no doubt the season has been a wonderful success for the NSGCA and female cricket in Northern Sydney. Saturday Afternoon Competitions The NSGCA ran three competitions this season following the entry of twelve teams. The Cup and Shield Competitions ran before Christmas and included teams from Ravenswood, Abbotsleigh and PLC, as well as Gordon Women s CC, St Ives CC, Castle Hill RSL, West Ryde Rovers and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook. Well done to Ravenswood Gold and PLC Blue for winning the Cup and Shield Competitions respectively. On Saturday 7th December, the Sthalekar Shield commenced, which was composed of the aforementioned district club teams. Castle Hill RSL won the finals against the undefeated West Ryde Rovers Blue team in March Pink Stumps Day For the fourth year running, the NSGCA has proudly participated in the McGrath Foundation s Pink Stumps Day, which helps to raise money for breast care nurses. This year, we raised $524, which was a great effort. As our semi-finals were unfortunately washed out, we only fundraised on Saturday 8th March for the Sthalekar Shield Grand Finals, so well done to everyone for purchasing raffle tickets, sausage sandwiches and many pink wristbands! Representative cricket This season, we had a record turn-out at the representative trials for the NSWDCA Girl s Carnival in January. This led to the formation of three representative teams; the first time the NSGCA has entered that many teams in the carnival. The U13 red team won the Mollie Dive Shield for the first time since 2007 and the U15s narrowly missed out in the grand finals of the Margaret Peden Shield. Our other U13s team was composed of girls who were new to cricket and it was wonderful to see them give it their best against some much more experienced teams. Some thank you s. I would like to thank the committee for their efforts throughout the season. The association simply cannot run without the likes of these wonderful volunteers, which include Dean Newman, Steven Bird, Dasuni Kannangara, John Porter, Kate Howitt, Carl Spears and Simon Fairall. Also thanks to HK&HDCA for their support, particularly in coaching some of our representative players. It has been a pleasure to work with Nathan Tilbury, Craig Menzies, Barry McDonald, Bruce Wood and many others. Finally, season has turned out to be the last season for NSGCA, as Cricket NSW have announced a new structure, called the Breaker s Junior Cricket League. It has been my absolute pleasure to volunteer with the NSGCA for the last five years and make a contribution to female cricket. 16 UMPIRES ASSOCIATION (HKHDCUA) The Annual General Meeting The AGM was held in June, 2013 with Geoff Hasler re-elected as President, Bruce Wood - Vice-President, Steve Wilson - Honorary Secretary, Scott Burrows - Assistant Secretary and Tim Davidson - Treasurer. Barry McDonald (Training Officer), Darren Goodger (NSWCUSA), and John McQuillan were again elected as Patrons of HKHDCUA for the 2013/14 season and were joined by the highly respected Alex Terry after his many years of dedicated service on and off the field for the HKHDCUA. We again welcomed our friend and Patron, NSWCUSA Executive Officer, Darren Goodger to our AGM in 2013, who presented Simon Moore with his 200 match medallion, a milestone for Simon. Darren gave an informative overview of developments in Cricket NSW and its impact upon cricket throughout the state. Darren is a very busy man and we are honoured to have him as a keen supporter of the HKHDCUA. We look forward to Darren s continued involvement and to our Association cementing its relationship with the state body. Training Programs Prior to the season, Geoff Hasler, in cooperation with Darren Goodger, promoted and administered the first NSWCUSA Umpire Certification course in the Hornsby district at Hornsby RSL. Geoff invited members of the NSW Churches Cricket Umpires Association and our neighbouring Northern District Cricket Umpires Association to join us with 5 and 2 members respectively accepting Geoff s invitation. Along with HK&HDCA players and umpires we commenced the course with 34 people enrolled and with an average attendance of 32 per night. The course was led by NSWCUSA Executive Officer, Darren Goodger with assistance from Geoff Garland and Laurie Borg. These gentlemen presented an informative and entertaining program focussed on the MCC Laws, preparing the group for the examination at the end of the course. The results speak for themselves 32 sat the exam and 27 passed with a minimum 85% required. All HKHDCUA prospective umpires passed with five attendees achieving the perfect 100% mark. An outstanding success by any measure and on behalf of the HKHDCUA we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all involved in the presentation and all attendees for their contribution to this important first for our association. Following this course, Geoff, Barry and Kieran Canavan presented our now established Level 1 training program for junior coaches and managers. Again, a good response from the clubs, with 47 attendees (43 of whom attained accreditation) gaining an invaluable insight into their responsibilities as umpires whilst ensuring our junior players enjoy their cricketing experiences throughout the season. Our Training team utilised selected video input, provided by Darren Goodger and his team at NSWCUSA, for the first time this season, which provided excellent graphic reinforcement to the presentations throughout the two part course. Geoff, Barry and Kieran also conducted the 2013 Captain s Ticket Course, with 72 newly appointed and/or experienced Senior Competition team captains, and motivated players in attendance (with 68 attaining accreditation). This program continues to provide our Senior Competition players with a broad understanding of the MCC Laws and Local Rules and the standard of behaviour expected throughout all grades of the competition. As an appropriate follow up to the NSWCUSA Course, Darren Goodger was invited to return in November, together with Laurie Borg, to present an evening Seminar focussing upon field craft, player communication and responding to questions from the group. The vast majority of those who attended the June Course returned to this informative session. Thanks are extended to each of Geoff, Barry and Kieran for their dedication and contribution to training people at all levels at the start of the season, your efforts are greatly appreciated by all players, parents, coaches, managers and most importantly, your colleagues. Appointments Summary This season witnessed a new record for the number of appointments with 293 being made 9 more than the previous record. Our thanks go to all our regular senior umpires who again performed very consistently throughout the season and surpassed last season s outstanding ratings in A grade with the 9 umpires used throughout the season recording an excellent average of 4.75 in MyCricket from the A grade Captains compared to 4.41 the previous year. The ratings were down a little to 4.02 for the Kookaburra Cup but this is understandable given we had several new members starting their umpiring journey this season on a regular basis and some teams new to that grade who didn t fully understand the umpire rating system. The ratings, however, highlighted the inconsistency between the grades and how (and why) captains rate us as they do. This was touched on at a recent umpires season review meeting and guidelines will be in place for the start of next season for the captains to utilise and rate their umpire in a more consistent manner. We welcomed several new members this season whilst Simon Moore, Bruce Wood and Tim Davidson returned to us to boost our numbers significantly. Joining our regular umpires this season were John Parikh and Gary Barton who completed their first full season whilst Raja Mohan completed his second year and stood in his first A Grade match. Late in the season we were joined by Ian Paterson (an excellent, experienced umpire) and were delighted to welcome him back. We trust that Ian will join us next season and further enrich our ranks. From feedback throughout the season it is evident that our umpires have reached a level of performance that is well regarded by the players with whom we work on a regular basis. 14

17 UMPIRES ASSOCIATION (HKHDCUA): Continued The workload once again was evenly shared. This season Ian Lewis topped the appointments with 27 matches and he was closely followed by Barry McDonald 25, Bruce Wood and Geoff Hasler 24, Steve Wilson 22, Simon Moore and Scott Burrows 20, John McQuillan 19, Alf James (OAM) 15, Peter Schouten 12, Scott Reid and Gary Barton 11, Kieran Canavan 10, Raja Mohan 8 and Ian Paterson, who stood in 4 finals matches. We were joined by many others who helped us out with the junior finals and also the senior semis and finals. We acknowledge and thank all our part-time umpires and players who helped us out in covering these games. Once again, all senior grade semi-finals were covered with an umpire and all senior and junior finals had two umpires in their respective grade (first time for the juniors but very well received). This reflects the depth and dedication of our members to our game. Finals Appointments This season saw the experienced pair, Geoff Hasler and Simon Moore, reunite and stand in the A Grade final at a somewhat damp Parklands Oval. Congratulations on your appointment both umpired very well throughout the season. Geoff was joined by Barry for the Under 16 Final, and Steve for the Sunday One- Day Competition Final that unfortunately only lasted for 16 balls lightning, rain etc! Barry McDonald stood in the 1st grade T20 final early in the season. Bruce Wood and Kieran Canavan also umpired the NSWDCA Under 14 Moore Shield Final. Milestones This season we have but one milestone to acknowledge one of our Patrons, Barry McDonald, who brought up his 200th match (again) during the season. Barry finished the season with 202 matches since records were kept after the 99/00 season. Congratulations, Barry your service to the HKHDCUA and indeed your club and district over many years is a model for all to admire. Perhaps it is appropriate for our Association to expand its programs of recognition to include 50 match breakdowns, as is the custom within NSWCUSA. Special Recognition We acknowledge the involvement of one of our senior members, Alf James OAM. Alf plays an important part in our success standing in many representative games every season. He also assists with senior games when the opportunity arises resulting in his standing in 15 games whilst still playing in his 50th season. Alf s commitment to cricket has been widely recorded, however, we would like to acknowledge Alf for his contribution as an umpire this season despite playing in a premiership winning team (Kenthurst Upper Hills). In fact, he didn t play in that game he umpired for us as he stood aside so a younger and better guy could fulfil his dream. This further demonstrates this man s dedication and passion for our game. Thanks Alf. Acknowledgements Finally, I wish to personally thank some people Geoff, for his untiring leadership, Tim for his outstanding work as our Treasurer he is simply fantastic to work with, Darren for his unwavering support (especially Geoff and myself) and most importantly, Scott Burrows, in his role as Assistant Secretary, who helped me tirelessly throughout the season. Scott was always there to cover for me and in addition he ran the Representative appointments in a most competent manner. Thanks mate, your efforts were truly appreciated. Congratulations on a great contribution to your team s achievements throughout the season. The 2013/14 Season witnessed the introduction of this award, voted by the A Grade Umpires within Rounds 1 to 14 of the Senior Competition. The umpire(s) awarded points on a 3/2/1 basis, taking into account the individual performances that most influenced the match result. Players judged to have behaved in an unacceptable manner outside of the Spirit of the Game within a match were ineligible for points in that match. Summary This has proven to be a season to remember for its positive feedback from the players, and especially for our Association s commitment to providing continuing education programs for all levels of cricket. The coaches engaged during these school holiday clinics included Rod Hokin (Head Coach), Bruce Wood (Co ordinator), Justin Epthorp, Josh Miller, Sujith Dissanayake & Rebecca Silk (all Level 2 accredited coaches); Dave Lowery, Daniel Wood, Will Fiedler, Daniel Anderson, James Madden, Braden Cheng, Calvin Breytenbach, Nathan Tanner, Nick McNay, Nicky Miller, Aaron Crofts, Luke Thorburn, Harry Middlebrook and Hamish Fullagar (Level 1 coaches). We were pleased to welcome Becca Silk from Sussex, England, who played for NDCC in 2013/14. The clinics provided a busy program of activities for the boys & girls aged between 5 & 14, which included video analysis of the bowlers actions; use of a bowling machine (when available) with a specialist batting coach to improve individual techniques; coaching on pace & spin bowling, catching, throwing and wicket-keeping skills; training in the nets (astro and turf); and a range of coaching drills and centrewicket games on the oval to reinforce the cricket skills learnt. HKHDCCA U/10 U/11 off-season development program (May August 2013) HKHDCCA held its third annual U/10 U/11 off-season Development Program at James Park, Hornsby over six Sundays (5 May, 26 May, 23 June, 14 July, 4 August & 25 August 2013). This popular program provided our youngest representative age groups with some properly structured coaching from accredited Level 1 and 2 coaches in small groups in order to learn the fundamentals of the game and the correct techniques, particularly in their transition from soft to hard ball cricket. We averaged around registrations on each date. Two sessions were held on each date from am and 10.30am 12.30pm to ensure individualised coaching for each player. The development program included batting and bowling in the nets (with an additional batting coach for one-on-one coaching for all batsmen); front & back foot defence, drives, cuts & pull shots; pace & spin bowling grips and deliveries; refinement of bowling actions where necessary, including techniques to keep the seam upright using dual-coloured balls; short & longer catching and throwing; ground fielding; calling and running between the wickets, and wicket-keeping skills. This program assisted in the preparation of HK&HDCA s Foster & Creak Shield teams to make the finals. Specialist Coaching Program (May - August 2013) HKHDCCA held its first Specialist Coaching Program, which provided subsidised, high quality coaching for U12 U15 players covering batting, pace & spin bowling, wicket-keeping and fielding. The sessions took place at James Park, Hornsby over four Sundays (19 May, 16 June, 28 July & 11 August 2013). This specialist coaching program was ideal for representative standard players and stronger club players who were looking to significantly improve their skills before the 2013/14 cricket season. Due to the success and positive feedback from this initial Specialist Coaching Program, it will become an annual event for HKHDCCA and will be expanded in Ross Turner Cup / Glenn Hourigan Cup September 2013 The Coaches Association continues to be responsible for organising the annual RTC and GHC fixtures. A successful T20 day was held for the GHC age groups on 8 September 2013 at Foxglove Oval, Mt Colah, involving four teams (48 players) from the U/13s to U/11s. The main RTC and GHC matches took place on 22 September 2013 at Turramurra Oval and Karuah Park respectively, being the first time they had been played as pre-season events, rather than in March due to wash-outs in previous years. Our special guests this season were Jon Whealing, the current Captain of Northern District s First Grade team and the only cricketer to play in four RTC matches, plus the respected gentlemen, Ross Turner and Glenn Hourigan. Both matches were high level contests involving the leading Shield rep. players in the Association. HKHDCCA provided opportunities for some outstanding young coaches, with Will Fiedler (East) and Sujith Dissanayake (West) coaching the RTC teams; and Alex Dolly & Matt McVay (East) and John Anderson & Daniel Heidegger (West) coaching the GHC teams, including the preliminary T20 matches. HKHDCCA held its first in-house professional development Coach the Coaches night at Action Indoor Sports, Mt Ku ring-gai on 17 June 2013, which was run by Rod Hokin and attended by 15 accredited coaches. The Coaches Association organised a Cricket Australia Community (Level 1) accredited coaching course at Action Indoor Sports, Mt Ku-ring-gai on 21 July Congratulations to the 24 people who graduated. HKHDCCA held a successful free coaching clinic for new cricketers (U/8 or older) at James Park on 18 August 2013 from 9.00am 11.30am, with 40 boys from a wide variety of cricket clubs in attendance. The Coaches Association s annual Coach of Year Award (Bruce Wood Cup) continues to recognise excellence in cricket coaching within HK&HDCA, including representative and/or club coaching, plus HKHDCCA cricket clinics. 20 NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB Northern District Cricket Club had a very successful year! Some of the highlights of the season were: Brad Haddin Nathan Lyon Scott Borthwick Congrats to ND s Aussie duo, Brad Haddin and Nathan Lyon, for their performances in rescuing back the Ashes from the Poms, and also defeating the South Africans on home soil. Bad luck to ND s player (and England Test player), Scott Borthwick for being on the receiving end! 1st Grade Limited Overs Premiers a fantastic effort from skipper Jono Whealing and the boys to beat a strong Sydney Uni side. Harry Conway, Chris Green, Dan Hughes and Dave Lowery with outstanding performances incredible 2nd in the Club Championship! 3rd grade Premiers. Captain Matt Johnson defeated Sydney Club (Balmain). The celebrations were Getting cricketers to reach their potential (and perform) is a team effort. NDCC, HK&HDCA and HKHDCCA are a good team. This is the result of hard work put in by people like Bruce Wood, Nathan Tilbury and Bruce Parker. We do a lot of good things together, including Coaching Clinics, Coaching accreditation, Green Shield Squad trials. We support each other s functions throughout the year. eg AGM s, Lunches, Presentation Nights, Ross Turner Cup (thanks to Bruce Wood again), Schools Cup and so on. There are lots of opportunities for young HK players to join the ranks of ND s. We do not spoon feed players here. We do not promise the world to young players like other clubs, but we can promise four things 1. The best coaching structure in the SCA Two level 3 coaches Paul Byrom specialises in fast bowling, Mark McInnes in spin and batting. Dom Thornely attends for fielding sessions. Mark Taylor mentors the captains. Several Level 2 coaches Ryan Nelson runs intense practice sessions. Paul also has very close relationships throughout Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia. It just doesn t get any better than that! 2. Great facilities 3. A fair selection policy (ie rewards for performances) 4. That you will have a good time! Your playing days at ND s will be good fun mixed with hard work. Ie You only get out of something what you put into it. 31 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT The season began with our T20 competitions across 5 grades. The 1st grade competition comes with prize money from our ever-generous sponsors Triforce and in the final Berowra defeated Hornsby who had themselves defeated the holders West Pennant Hills - Cherrybrook in the semi-final. Galston - Glenorie began what would turn out to be a fine season with victory over Berowra (Maroon) in the 2nd Grade. St Ives took fewer than 10 overs to chase down Beecroft s modest total in 3rd Grade. Hornsby defeated Sydney Lions Sports Club (4th Grade), and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook (Red) chased down what many would consider a respectable 107 off the 20 overs posted by Thornleigh in 11.4 overs in 5th grade. Most teams batted the full 20 overs, demonstrating that the batsmen still value their wickets in the shortened form of the game. This season we had an additional three teams in the Saturday competition with 72 teams across the nine grades which gave a neat eight teams in each grade. There was also an increase of two teams from last season to make eight for the Sunday Competition. The almost miraculous revival of the Australian test team may well result in a further increase in the coming season. Congratulations to West Pennant Hills - Cherrybrook who once again successfully defended their A Grade Premiership, making it three in a row. Credit is due to both teams, the umpires and the Council for getting the fixture to go ahead after the 1st day washout. Asquith Rugby League was in the box seat as minor Premier so West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook knew that they had their work cut out. Their fears must have increased with the loss of Sol Tomlinson with the scorers untroubled. The innings required building, but there was limited time in which to do so, as this was a two-day game which had to be completed inside a day. Sol was the first of 4 ducks, with only 3 West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook players making double figures. Fellow opener James Makin (28) with a captain s knock took the score to 81 before he was the 8th dismissal and no further score was posted before the end of the innings. Dale Wellington (4-19) inflicting the early damage but leg-spinner Denver Rego (5-9) appears to have been the pick of the ARL bowlers. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook all out for what looked a modest 81, but I suspect the players who knew the conditions thought otherwise. ARL set about their task and, although they only had 2 ducks, only one of the players made double figures, that being Greg Westwood who equalled his top score in the competition this season with 32. Scott Henderson was the pick of the bowlers for West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook with an outstanding return of 6 for 15. Congratulations again to the victorious team but credit to all those who take up the challenge of playing in the Association s premier grade. The extremely poor weather in the lead up to the final which looked like threatening the semi-finals as well resulted in the SCC moving all matches bar A Grade from turf to their artificial backups. The Councils were asked to focus their attention on these, and our thanks go to them for their efforts. Congratulations also to the following: Kookaburra Cup (A Reserve) Minor premiers by a clear 13 points Berowra, batted long into day 2 to post a total of 237. The game had started well for their opponents, Normanhurst-Warrawee, when Berowra found themselves 4-25, but Michael Steptoe and Nick McNay built a partnership of 70 with the former the more aggressive and the latter batting on with the tail that wagged, and being the 9th wicket to fall with the score beyond 200 and the 2nd day wearing on. Pick of the Normanhurst-Warrawee bowlers was Tom Foreman who gave nothing away, taking 2 for18 off 23 overs, with 11 maidens. The chase never really got going with two early wickets and Normanhurst-Warrawee did well to bat through to close at 9-75 off the 44 overs they had available. Will Johnston who came in at number 4 top scored with 28 not out. Berowra stuck mainly to the three bowlers Phil Reid, Doug Foster and Andrew Cook, who shared the work and spoils assisted later by the batting star Nick McNay who chipped in with 1 for 1 off 3 overs. B Grade Minor Premiers Galston - Glenorie (by 10 points) were beaten by 4th placed St Ives - Wahroonga in the semi-final in a game that saw the completion of two innings each and the loss of 40 wickets for the combined total of just 353 runs (50 of which were extras, and 88 of which were scored by Ben Gussey of St Ives). The other semi-final was a closer affair with Phil Wurth of West Pennant Hills - Cherrybrook the key man scoring 74. Wurth (57) didn t disappoint in the final either and the higher-placed team who won the toss and elected to bat built their innings steadily to 301 off overs. Michael McGregor was the top scorer with an unbeaten 81. The overs were bowled at a high tempo and there was still a little time remaining, and while opener Gussey finished unbeaten on 18 the ask was too much. Nick Starr of West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook bowled 16 overs straight and ended with figures of 8 for 42 for a well-earned victory. B Reserve Minor premiers Asquith Rugby League defended their Premiership from the season as they overcame 2nd placed Berowra in the final, both teams coming through the semi-finals unscathed, although Berowra may have had a fright with Hornsby at 115 for 3 chasing their 187. With the first day s play washed out, ARL put Berowra in to bat and they steadily amassed 163 all out off 39.1 overs. Seemingly ignoring the opportunity to simply bat out the day, ARL set about chasing the total and passed the Berowra score inside 50 overs, captain and wicket keeper Brett Munro finishing unbeaten on 46. Leslie Kilby was the pick of the Berowra bowlers with 4 wickets off his 16 overs, but they came at just over 4 an over. ARL s top wicket-taker, Scott McQuade, also went at a similar rate for his 3 wickets off C Grade Runaway Minor premiers (by 12 points) West Pennant Hills - Cherrybrook overcame Sydney Lions Sports Club in the final, 193 runs off 88.4 overs being enough to make the chase too much for the Lions who made 126 all out off 62.5 overs. Justin Patterson, who also starred in the 5th grade T20 final, took 6 for 33 off his 22.5 overs, giving him a massive 56 for 523 off 200 overs in all competitions. Justin also scored 24 with the bat, demonstrating he is a bit of an all rounder for West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook by amassing 499 runs in his 18 innings in all competitions. Rahul Sabherwal was top-scorer with a fine innings of 61. Pamal Dias also demonstrated he is no slouch with the bat scoring 29

32 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT : Continued 44 for the Lions. C2 Was a tight competition, with one point separating each of the top three teams and the final was a tight contest. Sydney Lions Sports Club put on a tidy 208, captain and opener Kogulan Baskaran top- scoring with 50. Seven of the eight bowlers used by Normanhurst-Warrawee took a wicket. Hamish Fullagar was the exception although he was the most economical. Normanhurst-Warrawee captain Chris Jones couldn t emulate his opposite number opening, but his fellow opener Peter Frost managed 56 and at they seemed to be cruising before a flurry of wickets looked to put the Lions back in the game only for Max Verma and Joshua Marshall to see the third-placed team home. C3 It was 2nd v 4th in C3, but 4th placed Kenthurst - Upper Hills who in the semi-final had overcome minor premiers St Ives Wahroonga (who had amassed 19 more points than them over the season) could not overcome the West Pennant Hills - Cherrybrook Blue team, who had begun the season in D Grade. Jason Goddard managed 44 for West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook who were put in to bat, but Kenthurst and Upper Hills must have sensed another solid victory after bowlers Matthew Dowers (3-19) and Bill Dowers (3-7) had helped in removing West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook for 135. Opener Bill Dowers (22) was the only player to make double figures in reply and while captain Col Griffin stabilised the innings after an early loss, wickets continued to fall relatively regularly and the team was all out for 60 off 41 overs. Batting again for 31 overs, Kenthurst - Upper Hills made a gutsy declaration on 162, but West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook were in no hurry and the game came to a close with them 1/28 off 26 overs. D Grade In a clash of the same two clubs as C3 (West Pennant Hills - Cherrybrook and Kenthurst - Upper Hills) the result was the reverse, with Kenthurst the victors. In a game where 35 wickets would fall, only ten batsmen would contribute double figures and only three would score more than 20. Kenthurst held their nerve after dismissing West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook for 60 and posted an even 100 before dismissing West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook for a further 97 runs. Set 58 for victory Kenthurst lost two quick wickets with the score stuck on 9 but came home relatively comfortably in the end. Harish Ahuja of Kenthurst (39 and 7) and Michael. Fiedler (30 and 13) of West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook were the batsmen of note, while across the two innings, Chaminda Lewis (7-36) and Josh Stringer (8-64), both of Kenthurst, were the pick of the bowlers. D2 Grade Galston - Glenorie ran away with the minor premiership, 20 points ahead of 2nd placed St Ives. Galston Glenorie s only loss all season was to St Ives as they went on to take out the Premiership against Normanhurst, who had also lost twice to St Ives before despatching them in the semi-final. Second-placed St Ives had lost both games to 4th 5th and 6th placed Berowra, Kissing Point and Kenthurst meaning that only 12 points separated 2nd from 6th and with two rounds to go, all four teams were in with a decent shout at filling the spots behind Galston - Glenorie. Galston - Glenorie posted a competitive 206 in the final having been put into bat, Andrew Giddings top scoring with 53 not out. Normanhurst-Warrawee used nine bowlers and the wickets were distributed between them but Andrew Watson capped a fine season with the prize wickets of O Halloran and Rodney Ribet from the top order. Normanhurst - Warrawee were off to a good start in reply and despite a duck from captain and keeper Nick Horgan, the game was in the balance at and although opener David Posener departed 5th down with the score on 119 and with the Hayes boys, (Jordan and Johua) both back in the shed Normanhurst dug in. They were eventually all out for 192, just 15 short of victory. Six bowlers were utilised by Galston Glenorie and again the wickets were spread amongst them. Sunday competition We had 10 teams in the Sunday competition with Beecroft and St Ives welcomed to the friendly competition. With round 9, the semi-final and the final all washed out, it was down to the standings after round 8 to decide the competition with Berowra 5 points ahead of the 2 West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook teams who were separated by only 2 points. Feedback from the competition was again positive as teams enjoyed getting out on the field with their friends of mixed ability and enjoying a bit of cricket. John Hayne Cup West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook C3 and Hornsby District D were the only teams unbeaten in their 4 games. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook C3 were declared the winners after bonus point adjustments by just 2 points. In the overall group competition, congratulations go to Galston- Glenorie, who take out the Club Championship. Credit goes as always to the clubs and their players for playing the game in great spirit throughout the season. I would like to thank the clubs and registrars for their efforts in complying with the rules this season; we did have to issue a number of fines and a few points penalties but the majority of clubs did well to avoid any serious breaches of the rules. Running the competition is very much a team effort and I would like to extend my thanks to the SCC members, Geoff Findlay, Roger Friend, Alf James, John Klingberg and new committee member Glenn Gittins who have worked tirelessly and given up countless hours throughout the season to ensure that the competition runs as smoothly and fairly as possible. There are very few (if any) days of the summer that go by where our s and phones are not buzzing with activity and the dedication and support of all the committee have been of great value to me and the Association. I would also like to thank Craig Menzies, our Executive Officer for his support. Craig took over the wet weather duties from Geoff Hasler, who had taken care of them for as long as I remember. We should also thank the recreational staff of the three Councils who have prepared some fantastic wickets for us this season and continue to work (often against the weather) to improve them. Our thanks is also extended to the Umpires Association and HKHDCA executive who have given us support and helped to make a successful season. 33 A GRADE FINAL Venue: Parklands Oval Umpires: Geoff Hasler and Simon Moore Minor Premiers, Asquith Rugby League faced up to the current champions, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, for what promised to be a closely fought final, with the score being one match each during the competition rounds.. Weather played a major part in the match, causing Saturday s play to be cancelled, with the teams returning on Sunday in the hope of deciding the champions on the field of play. Groundsman, Christian Mitchell, played an important role on both days, attempting to provide a playable pitch, which facilitated the final commencing at on the Sunday, with 83 overs available to achieve a result. Asquith Rugby League Captain, Michael Hall, won the toss and had no hesitation in inviting James Makin and his West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook team to bat first on a wicket that promised assistance to the bowlers, whilst being as good as one might hope for given the steady rain on both of the preceding Thursday and Friday. Dale Wellington opened the Asquith Rugby League attack, and so began the procession of wickets that was the pattern for the day. James Makin played a determined innings, contributing 28 runs to the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook total of 81, remaining at the crease from the opening ball until the fall of the 8th wicket. Ranga Ediriwickrama joined Makin for a 5th wicket partnership of 32, hitting four boundaries in his innings. The introduction of Denver Rego to the attack, bowling his well controlled leg spin, saw wickets tumble quickly, with Rego taking 5 wickets for 9 from 6.1 overs, completing a very good season by providing an excellent alternative to the pace attack. Dale Wellington gave tremendous support, leading the fast attack, taking 4-19 from his 8 overs. Asquith Rugby League keeper, Simon Arthur, again demonstrated his talent behind the stumps, taking 3 catches plus two stumpings, continuing his status as the leading keeper in the A grade competition over many seasons. The West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook innings closed with 81 runs on the board from 29.1 overs, and it was up to the Asquith Rugby League batsman to at least match this total to claim the premiership. The Asquith Rugby League openers found the bowling of both Matt Spalding and Matt Jobson difficult on this pitch, and the wickets soon kept the scorers busy, with the top three batsmen back in the sheds for 22 runs. Greg Westwood came to the crease and provided his team with an opportunity to chase down the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook total of 81 with a determination that promised a fight to the end. Scott Henderson was introduced to the attack, and in an inspired spell of some 8 overs took the match away from Asquith Rugby League, backed up by some excellent fielding from his team. Westwood compiled a score of 32, the top scorer in the match, but fell to a good outfield catch off the bowling of Henderson, with the score at 59. Unfortunately for the Minor Premiers, Henderson continued to menace the remaining batsmen, and the 28th over saw the Asquith Rugby League team dismissed for a total of 67 hard fought runs. Scott Henderson finished with 6-15 from his 8.1 overs, and simply proved to be too good on the day. The low scores from both teams ensured an exciting contest for the great crowd of supporters at the Parklands Oval venue, who cheered every run, every wicket throughout the day, urging their players towards a victory. Congratulations to both teams in making the final, it was a memorable event, made possible by the hard work initially from the groundsman, and the tough contest provided by both teams. This victory provided the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook club with its third A grade Premiership in succession, with their captain, James Makin in charge for all three, an admirable achievement and a first for this, our biggest club. 52 HK&HDCA REPRESENTATIVE SECRETARY S REPORT 2013 / 14 To win the SHELL SHIELD for the first time last season was a tremendous achievement, but our Junior Representative teams have consolidated the success this season and retained the SHELL SHIELD. Not only this, but in combination with our Senior Representative teams we placed second in the MEYER SHIELD by 0.14%. If we had won just one of the games that were drawn due to the wet weather, we would have won the MEYER SHIELD as well. In the junior age groups the U10, U11, U12, U14, U15 and U16 teams made the final rounds, with the U12, U15 and U16 teams playing in their finals. The U15 Weblin team went on to win their age premiership. In the seniors, both the Durham Shield and Telegraph Shield teams won their premierships, and with the combined results of the Telegraph Shield and Martin Shield teams, HK&HDCA won the SEARLE SHIELD. NSWDCA Individual Awards were also won by the following players: William Coffey Creak Shield Cricketer of the Year and Creak Shield Bowling Award Joe Hiley Cawsey Shield Batting Award Kenneth Chu Cawsey Shield Bowling Award Travis Loxton Weblin Shield Batting Award In addition to this, Lachlan Shaw has been selected for the NSW Primary Schools Cricket team and he had the highest aggregate number of runs in Creak Shield. To add to these impressive results, our U16 Presidents Cup team won their premiership and our U15 Presidents Cup team were runners up in their competition. The U11 Presidents Cup team turned their season around midway, and ended up coming fourth. The U12, U13 and U14 Presidents Cup teams had some close games, and are showing all the signs of becoming very strong teams. One of the highlights of the season for me was that despite the number of games that were washed out, we still had 8 players score centuries, 5 players take 5 wickets in an innings and one hat trick. As always these players will be receiving TriForce Sports vouchers in addition to their trophies. The successes this season come down to a number of factors, not least of which is the abilities of our players, coaches and managers with teams playing as teams. The introduction of independent coaches and selectors, along with the rotation of these coaches and selectors has aided this development, and made the whole process much more transparent. coaches and club managers, as well as the administration of the junior competition by Bruce Kimberley and the additional coaching provided by the Coaches Association led by Bruce Wood. The development work conducted by all of these people provides a solid framework for our Rep players. Developing this pool of junior talent for the Reps teams, are a group of coaches, managers and convenors who give so much of their time and skill to ensure that all members of each of the teams enjoys their Rep cricket. From myself, the Rep Committee and all of the junior Rep players, thank you. Often forgotten are the Umpires, without which, there would be no games. I would like to thank all of our umpires, but especially Scott Burrows and Steve Wilson. Thanks also goes to Barry McDonald for conducting the information session at the net trials in 2013 and with Geoff Hasler for the rules session prior to the season start. In addition to our normal grounds Barker College, Northholm Grammar and Redfield College allowed us the use of their ovals and training facilities, for which we are grateful. With the support of our sponsors we have been able to access some valuable resources which would otherwise have been unavailable to us. 62 ROSS TURNER CUP SUNDAY, 22 SEPTEMBER 2013 TURRAMURRA OVAL HK&HDCA s showcase junior representative match called the Ross Turner Cup (RTC) has been held since and features the outstanding players in our district from the U/15 age group and below. The annual East v. West contest was the brainchild of Tom Richmond, OAM, Life Member and Patron of HK&HDCA, who passed the responsibility to Bruce Wood, President HKHDCCA (Coaches Association) in The RTC & GHC fixtures highlight our emerging junior talent and are focused on accelerating the development of our rep. standard players. The Ross Turner Cup is named after the former dual First Grade premiership captain at Northern District CC who now does great work for the International Cricket Council (ICC), increasing the participation and popularity of cricket in emerging nations, including Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Afghanistan and India. The previous 15 RTC matches have unearthed some outstanding cricketers over the years, with an amazing 18 players graduating to play First Grade cricket in Sydney, and one player (Timm van der Gugten) has reached First Class and international level. Our special guests at RTC were Jon Whealing, the current Captain of Northern District s First Grade team and the only cricketer to play in four RTC matches, and Ross Turner, Patron of HK&HDCA and HKHDCCA, who made a special effort to attend, despite some overseas cricket commitments. Both these gentlemen inspired the young players with their words of wisdom before the match, and Nathan Tilbury (HK&HDCA President) also extended a warm welcome to all concerned. It was pleasing to see many HK&HDCA Life Members in attendance, including Tom Richmond OAM, Alf. James OAM, Glenn Hourigan, Barry McDonald, Ross Anderson, John McQuillan, Geoff Hasler and Bruce Wood. Denise Anderson (Annetts), HK&HDCA Patron and Cricket NSW Hall of Fame inductee (2012), was another special guest, as was Mike Langford (President of Northern District CC). This season s RTC and GHC matches were played as pre-season events for the first time after the traditional March date had been washed out 3 years in a row since , requiring difficult rescheduling. The actual Ross Turner Cup had been refurbished with a new base and the historical winners listed. The players shirts were again kindly provided by our generous sponsor, Triforce Sports Pty Ltd (Abbas Aly). Thanks to Peter Heidegger for undertaking the photography duties for RTC & GHC this season. The toss was won by Anthony Johnston who decided that his West team would bat first. Johnston No. 4) led the way with a powerful 52 runs, which included 8 boundaries. Johnston and Adam Tan (13) combined for a 44 run, 5th wicket partnership, which took the West team to a promising 4/102 after 29 overs. However a combination of good bowling by the East team and poor shot selection by the remaining West team batsmen resulted in them being all out for 132 runs in the 45th over. Sanjay Balakumar (3/38 off 10 overs) led the bowling attack for the East team and was well supported by Quentin Cheng who came on as eighth bowler to claim 3/3 from 5 overs. Avneet Bhele contributed well with 2/14; Nic Dolly was impressive as wicket-keeper with a tidy performance and a brilliant, diving legside catch; and Ryan Tullia led his team well, with good field placements, a great run out and a sharp catch. In reply, the East team s opening batsmen, Dash Ratnam (30) and Ryan Tullia (48no) got away to a very solid start, which was continued by the No. 3 batsman, Cooper Goddard, who was run out for 40. The East team cruised to a 7 wicket victory in the 40th over, led by a terrific Captain s knock by Ryan Tullia, who was solid throughout. 64 GLENN HOURIGAN CUP - SUNDAY, 22 SEPTEMBER 2013 KARUAH PARK HK&HDCA s showcase junior representative match known as the Glenn Hourigan Cup (GHC) has been held since and features the outstanding players in our district from the U/13 age group and below. The East v. West GHC contest was instigated by Tom Richmond, OAM, Life Member and Patron of HK&HDCA, following the success of the U/15 Ross Turner Cup fixture, which commenced five years earlier in The responsibility for organising the annual RTC & GHC matches was passed onto Bruce Wood, President HKHDCCA (Coaches Association) in These matches highlight our emerging junior talent and are focused on accelerating the development of our representative standard players by playing a competitive intra-association rep. match. The GHC match is named after Glenn Hourigan, the Association s Representative Secretary from 1988 to Glenn gave wonderful service to HK&HDCA rep. cricket and was inducted as a Life Member in Preliminary GHC T20 matches were played at Foxglove Oval, Mt Colah on 8th September 2013, involving 4 teams of 12 players. Following the T20 matches, the 11th annual GHC contest was held on Sunday, 22nd September 2013 at Karuah Park, Turramurra and it was great that Glenn & Margaret Hourigan were able to attend the match again this year. This season s RTC & GHC matches were played as pre-season events for the first time after the scheduled March date had been washed out 3 years in a row since The players shirts were again kindly provided by our generous sponsor, Triforce Sports Pty Ltd (Abbas Aly). Thanks also to HK&HDCA sponsors, Kookaburra Sport (Cameron Eve) for supplying the match balls and Man of Match awards. The official umpires were Kieran Canavan and Alf James OAM. Thanks to Peter Heidegger for undertaking the photography duties for RTC & GHC in 2013/14. Before the match, RTC / GHC organiser Bruce Wood challenged the GHC batsmen to hit a half-century, as the highest individual score in the 10 year history of this contest was 49. Being an early season match on a picturesque oval with a fast outfield and a few short boundaries, there was considerable optimism that the batsmen might dominate proceedings for a change. The GHC West captain, Dhruva Thorat, won the toss and elected to bat first. The West team batted well, led by Dhruva Thorat (67) first half century in GHC, Lachy Shaw (42) and Yash Patel (49). They finished their 50 overs with a very competitive, record score of 5/204. Thorat & Patel recorded the highest partnership in GHC history 107 (3rd wicket). The best bowlers for the East team were Cooper Davenport (2/25) and Kenneth Chu (2/29). All the East bowlers toiled away in hot conditions and bowled an amazing 9 maiden overs, almost 20% of the innings, which restricted the West team s final total. The pressure was on the East team to chase down this new record highest score, so we were in for a great afternoon of cricket! The West team s opening bowler, Yushan Gunewardhene (2/31), produced a fiery spell, making scoring difficult for the batsmen but also proving to be handful for the young wicket-keeper. The East team s batting was under pressure early on, however a strong captain s knock by Brad Stockwell (75 new highest score in GHC history) helped to stabilise the innings, with support from Ronan Shiels (24). The East team finished strongly (5/206 new record score) with some useful contributions with the bat; including a great innings by Nick Hammond, who reached 50no off the last ball bowled in the match in the 43rd over. Congratulations to the winning coaches, Alex Dolly & Matt McVay (East) and also the other GHC coaches, John Anderson & Daniel Heidegger (West). 66 HK&HDCA ANNUAL GOLF TEAM EVENT KOOINDAH WATERS RESIDENTIAL GOLF AND SPA RESORT Our Third Annual Ambrose Event was played in great weather at the challenging Kooindah Waters Resort which was presented in excellent condition a pity the quality of the golf didn t match that of the course in most cases. A pre-game breakfast of Egg and Bacon Rolls and Coffee was the prelude to the day, with a final total of sixty nine players teeing up for the Four Ball Ambrose contest. A shot gun start spread our competitors around the course, following a welcome from the Kooindah Waters Golf staff, who outlined the conditions for play and then the carts charged out to begin play at 9.00am. The event was again well supported by teams from ARL, Beecroft, Berowra, Epping, Galston/Glenorie, Kissing Point, St Ives and WPHC, plus a team from each of the Umpires Association and the Coaches Association. My sincere thanks are extended to those guys who took responsibility within their clubs to recruit and organise their teams and these include Simon Arthur (ARL), Mitch Burger (Beecroft), Glen Gittins (Galston/Glenorie), Gavin Wingfield (St Ives), Nick Hasler (Kissing Point) and Ric Dacic (Berowra) amongst others. Given the enthusiasm shown in previous years, a larger group was expected, and would have been the case except for a few late withdrawals due to various reasons. However, those who were there again endorsed the day as a terrific day out and will be back next year to do it all again. The handicapper (Geoff Hasler) again proved to be overly generous to many of the social golfers, or those who professed to be so, with the scores indicating this situation. He will certainly be somewhat more circumspect in the future and make every attempt to better balance the competitor s results. The Winners The Berowra Club took the honours for the second year in a row, with a new group of thieves, ably led by Ric Dacic, with Doug Foster, Sam Watts and Adrian Gins providing the golfing skills. With a round of 64 off the stick for a net score of 52.4, they blitzed the field by some four shots the handicapper is not happy. Runners up, Nigel Blow, Andrew Williams, Chris Hopkins and Jason Goddard scored a 67, net to beat the Epping team of Matt and Anthony Boorer, David Wait and George Shortis with 72, net 58.5 The Bradman Every cricketer s golf day must have a Bradman Prize and this was won by the previous year s runners up, Nick Hasler, Josh Hallam, Chris Roden-Smith and Nick David, winning narrowly from the determined efforts by the Beecroft boys to take the Bradman for successive years. Beecroft unsuccessfully protested this result. 67 Normanhurst - Warrawee Crowned CNSW Under 16 Weetbix Cup Premiers Two qualifying games against Kissing Point and Pennant Hills saw the Normanhurst-Warrawee Under 16 team crowned as HK&HDCA T20 champions and it was off to the Blacktown International Sports Centre for the preliminary finals. After three hard fought and nail biting victories against Carlingford, St Augustines (including a six off the last ball to win the game) and Moorebank, the boys made it through to the State Final to be played at the SCG where they came up against a well drilled Port Macquarie team. A tense 22 run victory was the result and the boys were crowned the Under 16 State T20 champions for 2013/14. HK&HDCA congratulates former local rep. player, Timm van der Gugten, on his outstanding performances for the Netherlands in the ICC T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in March Timm gained international cricket acclaim, taking (BB 3/30); economy rate 6.76; including the important wickets of JP Duminy (South Africa); Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill (New Zealand); and Eoin Morgan (England). Timm played for Hornsby DCC until the Under 11s before switching to Normanhurst CC in the Under 12s in when his Hornsby club team folded. He played for Normanhurst for 3 years and in HK&HDCA representative teams for 5 years, before making his First Grade debut for the University of NSW at age 15, becoming the 8th youngest debutant in history. Timm starred in the undefeated Under 15 Weblin Shield premiership team in , scoring a (then) record average (HS 130) and taking (BB 6/23). This amazing allround performance won him the NSWDCA Weblin Shield Player of Year and the HK&HDCA Tom Richmond Trophy for the Leading Junior Representative Player. Timm also played in the HK&HDCA Ross Turner Cup matches in 2004 & Timm s best bowling figures in First Class cricket are 7/68 (10/121 in match); in ODIs are 5/24; and in T20 internationals are 5/21. Without a doubt this has been because of the considerable efforts and dedication from many volunteers but this is especially true of a select number of special individuals. Because of these gentlemen s contributions the HK&HDCA has extremely strong bones which allows those that follow the very solid foundation to continue to build on. Alf James is one of those special individuals. After coming through the Association s junior ranks Alf started playing senior cricket in the HK&HDCA in the 1964/65 season and has played consecutively since. This means in 2013/14 he chalked up an incredible 50 consecutive seasons. Incredibly he rarely missed a match in that time and so totals approximately 750 games played across every grade. I ve played both against and with Alf in our senior competitions and both experiences were an absolute pleasure. The HK&HDCA s C3 senior competition trophy is named the Alf James Cup in his honour. I was fortunate to actually win this trophy with Alf himself in 2008/09. Imagine winning the trophy that is named after yourself. Alf has obviously done so much for this Association both on the field and off it. He has played for numerous clubs (twelve I think, and counting) and won many Premierships. He was also President of the Association for a record 22 seasons from 1980 to He has served on many many important sub-committees for our Association. In fact he is still currently serving this season just finished, being part of our Senior Competition Committee. He is also the current HK&HDCA Historian meaning he validates all possible records broken and is the keeper of those records. Speaking of records, Alf has scored over 10,000 runs and taken over 1,000 wickets across our senior competitions which is a mind boggling double achievement. Alf has also authored many books, mostly about history and or cricket, including the history of our Association, titled SUMMER SATURDAYS, and the history of The NSW District Cricket Association (DCA). Alf James has been awarded the highest honour for both these Associations, receiving Life Membership of the HK&HDCA in 1982 and he was made a Life Member of the NSW DCA in I have personally learnt so much from Alf during my five seasons playing with Alf and my three seasons as President of this Association. He has always been there for me to bounce off an idea or share a problem. Many of these problems he almost certainly had faced himself at some stage as an long term Association President and therefore almost always has a likely solution ready to share. We are indeed wonderfully fortunate to have an individual such as Alf James, with so much experience, still so active in our Association both on and off the field. His long term behind the scenes service to this Association and many of our clubs has a lot to do with the reason why the HK&HDCA is so strong today, and why our cricketers have the opportunity to just worry about playing cricket and not concern themselves so much with off field issues. I congratulate Alf James on completing 50 consecutive seasons playing in our senior competitions. This is an incredible achievement which I hope has not come to an end just yet. 70 50th LIFE MEMBER OF HK&HDCA INDUCTED IN 2013 HK&HDCA held its Annual General Meeting on 23 July 2013 and one of the highlights was the induction of Bruce Geoffrey Wood (pictured below) as the Association s 50th Life Member. Bruce Wood has provided exceptional and exemplary service to cricket in this area for a lengthy period. He served with distinction in a variety of positions for the Normanhurst-Warrawee CC, where he was made a Life Member in Significantly, Bruce is the first HK&HDCA Life Member from Normanhurst-Warrawee CC (formerly Normanhurst CC), a foundation club in the Association dating back to At Association level, Bruce served as a delegate from the Normanhurst- Warrawee CC and has been on the Association s Executive Committee for six years. He has worked to initiate and maintain sponsorship from the Kooindah Waters Golf Resort and assisted the Association s operations in many other ways.\ His work in coaching has been exemplary. He has coached eight separate representative teams, taken teams on tours to a number of places, including overseas (India and NZ) and assisted several Representative Secretaries in their tasks. His initiative in forming the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Coaches Association (HKHDCCA) in 2010 has contributed strongly to coaching in our district. He has served as President of this Association and has been directly responsible for organising significant coaching clinics. Since , Bruce has organised the showcase Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup annual fixtures. As a delegate from the Coaches Association, he has been a member of the Northern Metropolitan Cricket Council. Bruce has umpired at the top level within the Association for the past decade and has served as Assistant Secretary, Secretary and Vice- Bruce Wood President of the Umpires Association. He has umpired many representative finals on the appointment of the NSWDCA. He has been the website administrator for both the representative cricket program and the umpires association. In assessing Bruce s contribution, our committee considered in detail his many contributions and noted that he had been involved with cricket at Barker College where he was inducted as a Life Member in 2010 and also has assisted with selections of the Northern District A. W. Green Shield team. Many young players have reason to be grateful for Bruce s contribution and our committee considers him to be a thoroughly worthy recipient of the honour of life membership.
