3 HK&HDCA PRESIDENT S REPORT 2015 / 16 SEASON As my first year as president comes to an end I would like to thank the Association for the honour you have bestowed upon me and to express my appreciation to two former Presidents, Alf James and Colin Cooper, who mentored me during my early years on the Association Executive in the 1980s. I would also like to thank my immediate predecessor, Nathan Tilbury, who sought my return to the Executive during his term as President. Of course, the Association is not run by one person and to this end I wish to thank my two Vice Presidents, Bruce Parker & Bill White, and Treasurer Tim Davidson for their work and support over the last year. Bruce, Bill and Tim make up the balance of the Association s Office Bearers and, while not openly visible in these roles, are the base around whom our Association is built and are a sound source of advice for the President. I also wish to thank Gavin Wingfield (Senior competitions), Bruce Kimberley (Junior competitions) and Bruce Parker (Representative teams) for their dedication and tireless efforts, and those of their committees, that have ensured these areas ran extremely well and have made my first year as President considerably easier. Providing cricket competitions for the participation of members of our communities is our primary responsibility and between these three groups more than 2,000 matches have been organised this season. Thank you also to Geoff Hasler (Umpire s Association), Bruce Wood (Coaches Association) and Edwina Chappel (Girl s Association). I look forward to the further success and growth within these affiliated bodies in years to come. Other cricket Associations across Sydney, and beyond, are envious of our success in these areas. Thanks to Roger Friend for his work as Minutes Secretary and to our committee members Scott Burrows, who also took on the challenging role of Disputes and Disciplinary Chairman and was provided with several difficult cases to manage in his first season, Andrew Miedler and Mitch Burger. I would also like to express my thanks to our Executive Officer, Craig Menzies, whose work in undertaking many different aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Association, both internally and externally, is rarely recognised. Craig is an extraordinary asset to the Association, his performance in this vital supporting role to the Executive is greatly appreciated by those with whom he works directly. The patience he displays while dealing with the vast array of personalities across the Executive, our member clubs, affiliates, sponsors and councils, many of whom are pushing for their own matters to be addressed as an immediate priority, is of immeasurable benefit to the Association. 2015/16 was another successful year for the Association. If you were to identify one single statistic that defines the success of a cricket Association, then it would the number of teams playing in its competitions. On this basis alone HK&HDCA has a great deal to be proud of with junior team numbers in 2015/16 increasing by 21 teams (16% growth) from 128 teams in 2014/15 to 149 teams this season. While many of these teams are in the Under 8 to Under 10 age groups (72 teams) there has been a consistent retention of teams numbers throughout the age groups up to Under 15s. The senior competition has retained team numbers at 78 between the Saturday and Sunday competitions. This provides the Association with a very strong base for the growth of both Junior and Senior competitions in the years ahead. It is also pleasing to see those clubs that in recent years have put in the hard work to establish their grassroots by starting a Milo In2Cricket centre are now enjoying the flow of these players into our Junior competitions. Clubs that have done this very successfully in recent seasons include Glenorie, St Ives Wahroonga and Asquith Rugby League. Congratulations to Normanhurst-Warrawee who won the Senior Club Championship in a photo finish ahead of West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook and also to Hornsby District who won the Junior Club Championship. Congratulations to the 2015/16 Senior Competition Premiers, Asquith Rugby League (A Grade), Mt Colah (A Reserve Grade), Kissing Point (B Grade), Lankan Islanders (B Reserve Grade), West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook (C Grade), Normanhurst-Warrawee (C Reserve Grade), Normanhurst-Warrawee (C 3 Grade), West Pennant Hills 2

4 HK&HDCA PRESIDENT S REPORT 2015 / 16 SEASON: Continued Cherrybrook (C4 Grade), Berowra (D Grade), St Ives (D Reserve Grade) and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook (Sunday competition). Congratulations also to the 2015/16 Junior competition Premiers, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Green (Under 11), Hornsby District (Under 12), Thornleigh (Under 13), Kenthurst Upper Hills (Under 14), Hornsby District (Under 15) and the combined team from Normanhurst-Warrawee & Pennant Hills (Under 16). The Kimbo Cup was won by Mt Colah Under 15s. The Senior T20 competitions were won by Sydney Lions (Triforce Cup Division 1) in their debut season in that competition, Mt Colah (Division 2), Beecroft (Division 3), West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook - Blue Division 4 and Thornleigh (Division 5). It is a true reflection of the depth of talent being developed in all clubs that, across the eleven Senior competitions there were eight individual clubs represented and across the six competitive Junior age divisions and the composite Kimbo Cup, seven clubs are represented as winners. The senior T20 competitions were won by five different clubs. HK&HDCA is also looking to further develop opportunities for our girl cricketers. This season saw the inclusion of a Girls Development Officer into HK&HDCA s constitution to which Edwina Chappel was elected. Edwina will be working closely with clubs and schools within our area to help more girls come through the system as well as assisting with the development of a clear pathway for any girls wishing to go further in the sport of cricket. For 2016/17 the Association is looking to further expand our offering for Girls cricket and Edwina will continue to oversee the growth in this area. At the Representative level it is a challenge to be measured against recent successes and while not able to repeat the outstanding results of recent years we did return some very strong performances across the age groups. Congratulations to our NSWDCA Under 23 Telegraph Cup team and IDCA Presidents Cup Under 16 Andrew Blamey Cup team on becoming Premiers in their competitions. In addition to these wins we also had teams reach the semi-finals in the Gee Shield (Under 13), where they were unfortunate not to progress with a tied result, and the Qualifying Finals in the Foster Shield (Under 10). The high quality of cricket played in our junior competitions and our junior representative results in recent years have been noticed at other levels of cricket in our local area with a number of recently graduated HK&HDCA juniors being heavily involved with the Northern District Grade Club. We can be very proud of the healthy relationship we have developed with our local grade club and it is pleasing that we can share in each other s success because of our strong links. While not winning a premiership this season Northern District were minor premiers in both 4th Grade and Green Shield. In recognition of the leadership provided at the Club, Northern District captains won three of the five Sydney Cricket Association Captain of the Year awards for 1st Grade (Chris Green), 2nd Grade (Dan Friedrich) and 4th Grade (Ryan Bolger). I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Association s sponsors that have played a significant role in our growth, development and success at all levels of the Association: Hornsby RSL Kookaburra Sport Triforce Sports Eylex (Rep. Cricket sponsor) Commonwealth Bank Hornsby (Girls Cricket sponsor) I ask that you continue to support those who so generously support the HK&HDCA. Thanks also to our three local Councils (Hornsby Shire Council, Hills Shire Council and Ku-ring-gai Municipal Council) that host our Association s matches on their grounds. Once again they provided quality grounds for our Senior and Junior competitions and for our Representative teams. 3

5 HK&HDCA PRESIDENT S REPORT 2015 / 16 SEASON: Continued The 2015/16 season saw two new grounds for the Association. The Old Dairy site at Brooklyn was developed by Hornsby Council to become our first new senior competition ground in more than 20 years. The ground was officially opened in January and will become one of our best senior grounds as the surface matures. In conjunction with Thornleigh CC and Thornleigh West Public School we were able to assist install a new wicket at Thornleigh West Public School that will help us meet our needs in the younger age groups in years to come. I would also like to thank Barker College who have again allowed this Association to play our Under 15 and Under 16 representative matches at their magnificent school turf wicket ground. This is both a privilege and a pleasure for those fortunate enough to be involved. Thank you to the Club committee members, team managers, team coaches and also the parents who put in considerable effort each week acting as umpires, scorers, taxi drivers and drink waiters among many other responsibilities that ensure our junior teams take the field with the best possible preparation. Without your hard work we simply would not have a competition for our cricketers. I look forward to 2016/17 with a great deal of enthusiasm as we have many more challenges ahead. We are already underway with a review of our Constitution to ensure we comply with ever-changing legislation, reviewing training facilities across the Association and as always looking for additional areas where space may be available to install cricket pitches both through arrangements with our Councils or Schools within our area. 8 HK&HDCA COUNCIL REPORTS HK&HDCA Publicity Report The Association places significant priority on maintaining accurate information in a range of media which is readily accessible to our players, officials and the general cricket community. Our website continues to be our main source of information, with the HK&HDCA senior & junior rules, draws, competition tables, statistics and historical records stored on the MyCricket database. During last season the website was revamped to make items easier to find with a more logical menu structure. During the coming season we will be including a complete history of all trophy winners on the website. The HK&HDCA website is your one-stop spot for information about upcoming events, current news, information covering representative cricket; the Coaches Association; Umpires Association; Sponsors; Newsletters; Minutes of meetings; Annual Reports; the Association s Constitution; policies; Life Members; Patrons and office bearers; wet weather information; media articles; local Council information and links to member clubs and kindred bodies. In addition to our website and communications, HK&HDCA utilises several popular online media streams, with a dedicated page on Facebook (facebook.com/ hkhdca); LinkedIn (linkedin.com/ company/hkhdca) and Twitter (twitter.com/hkhdca). This season will see an increase in the utilisation of Facebook to help keep our players informed of the developments within our Association. The popularity of HK&HDCA is steadily growing and as we went to press with this report the Association had 882 likes, an increase of 33% from the year before. HK&HDCA recognises and appreciates the wonderful support of our major corporate sponsors, Triforce Sports, Kookaburra Sport and Hornsby RSL. For this reason, our sponsors logos feature prominently on our homepage, with a direct link to the sponsors websites. The printed HK&HDCA business cards for key Executive members promote our Association and also promote our three sponsors with their colour logos on the back. The sponsors logos are also included in all correspondance and major HK&HDCA publications, including the Annual Report. Craig Menzies Executive Officer HK&HDCA D&D Report Unfortunately, for the 2015/16 there were 6 matters referred to the Disputes and Disciplinary Committee (D & D) for the season. In line with guidelines introduced during the season most matters were resolved, with actions acceptable to the Association, by the Club involved. However, in 1 case it was necessary to resolve through the holding of a formal D & D Hearing. Matters involved instances of on-field behaviour, spectator behaviour and representative team issues. In senior cricket, the captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws. For junior cricket, parents will take a more active role to ensure that play is conducted appropriately. In most cases referred, the matters could (and should) have 7 been resolved on the field of play without the need to refer to the D&D with some common sense and respect for the principles of the Spirit of Cricket. The Spirit of Cricket involves Respect for: your opponents your own captain and team the role of umpires the game and its traditional values It is against the Spirit of the Game: to dispute and umpire s decision to abuse opponents or umpires to indulge in any form cheating Scott Burrows D&D Committee Chairman HK&HDCA Records Officer Report The Association will be making a greater effort across the coming season to highlight various records across all forms of competition within the Association During the season the following records were broken: Weblin Shield Batting Aggregate - Dhruva Thorat, Hornsby District Under 11 IDCA Highest Score - Tomas Kohlhagen, WPHCCC Under 11 Batting Average - Cameron Tunks, WPHCCC T20 4th Grade Bowling Figures - Luke Harriss, Beecroft vs Hornsby District In the second season of C4 Grade there were a total of 3 records and 4 partnership records broken.

9 ASSOCIATION SPONSORS HK&HDCA was again very pleased and fortunate to have Triforce Sports as a major sponsor in season 2015/16. Triforce Sports was a proud supporter of the Grass Roots sports raffle during the 2015/2016 season which was designed to directly benefit the Association as well as our member clubs and ended up raising a lot of money for all involved. The raffle was drawn on 27 May 2016 at the conclusion of the HK&HDCA Junior and Representative Presentation night with first prize of a Suzuki Celerio being won by Mark Rushton for Blowfly Cricket. In addition to this support Triforce Sports also provided private coaching certificates to winners of the Alf James / Barry McDonald Scholarship awards. In 2016 Triforce Sports has sold their retail stores but retain the name of Triforce Sports and remain committed to their indoor training facilities at Bella Vista and Mortlake. The indoor training centres will become the focus of their team moving forward. Triforce Sports will continue to operate small pro-shop style stores within the training centres and will continue to facilitate arrangements for the purchase of cricket ball supplies for HK&HDCA clubs. Triforce Sports is also the sponsor of HK&HDCA s premier T20 competition, The Triforce Cup. My thanks to Abbas Aly and his team at Triforce Sports for their tremendous support of HK&HDCA which will continue into the 2016/17 season. HK&HDCA is extremely fortunate to have Hornsby RSL as our sponsor partner. We have just completed our fifth year together. Hornsby RSL has given the Association and many of our affiliated groups a true home to meet and socialise. The RSL is a terrific fit due to its location in the geographic heart of our Association and I can truly say it is an excellent location for the many meetings we hold throughout the year. This helps assure that our meeting attendance numbers are strong which is crucial to communications with our member Clubs and the future success of the Association. The RSL also hosts many meetings of our sub-committees and our affiliated bodies such as the Umpire s and Coach s Associations. Post meeting we can enjoy open and frank discussions in a relaxed atmosphere. Hornsby RSL s Showroom was again host to our largest and most prestigious event in the Junior/Representative Presentation night. This event is extremely well supported with some 500 people in attendance to acknowledge our successful representative season and recognize the highest achievers from our junior competitions. The RSL is also a great location to host other events such as our Annual General Meeting and Senior Presentation night in July and annual Christmas Drinks in December which are very well patronised and enjoyable annual events. My thanks to the Hornsby RSL Board for their ongoing support and in particular to RSL Assistant CEO Steve Rigney who manages our sponsorship each year and Jo Gilbert who professionally manages our many bookings and events through the year. 8

10 ASSOCIATION SPONSORS: Continued The HK&HDCA has been proud to receive sponsorship from Kookaburra Sport since and in February 2013, both parties agreed to continue this partnership until at least the season, with increased ball royalties (rebates) included in the deal. This season Kookaburra sponsored HK&HDCA and member clubs to the tune of over $7,500, comprising ball rebates, prizes and other in-kind benefits. HK&HDCA sincerely thanks Noel Moig and Cameron Eve, a former player of our Association, for all their support and assistance. ABOUT KOOKABURRA Kookaburra Sport was established in For the first 100 years of its existence, Kookaburra Sport traded as A G Thompson Pty Ltd and many members of the Thompson family are still involved in the day to day running of the company, looking to extend its award winning record as the world s best known manufacturer of cricket (and hockey) balls. The Kookaburra name is synonymous with Australian sport. Not only is Kookaburra Sport the largest producer of cricket balls in the world, its cricket bats and ultra light protective equipment are used by the world s elite cricketers, including Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, AB De Villiers, Martin Guptill and Jos Butler. Kookaburra s world famous Turf cricket balls are used exclusively in Test cricket in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, with Pakistan being another Kookaburra stronghold. SPONSORSHIP AGREEMENT WITH HK&HDCA In addition to generous rebates on the purchase of Kookaburra branded balls (Regulation 4 piece, Tuff Pitch and Red King 2 piece), the agreement includes some fantastic Kookaburra Rising Star Awards, with 5 monthly award winners receiving $100 worth of Kookaburra gear, and the overall winner being presented with a trophy and $500 worth of Kookaburra gear, including a terrific new cricket bat. The ongoing sponsorship agreement between Kookaburra and HK&HDCA also includes $100 worth of cricket gear for the selected player of the match in both the Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup matches. The current agreement also includes the provision of match balls and stumps for the Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup fixtures. Kookaburra Sport has also agreed to provide HK&HDCA with two full-sized Autograph Bats signed by a Kookaburra contracted player to be used for fund-raising purposes; and playing shirts for the Junior Representative sides participating in the annual Regional Cricket Carnivals during the season. 11 UMPIRES ASSOCIATION (HKHDCUA) The HKHDCUA has enjoyed another great year and possibly it s best ever as shown in this report Annual General Meeting The HKHDCUA AGM was held in June, 2015 with Geoff Hasler re-elected as President, Scott Reid as Vice-President, Steve Wilson as Secretary, Simon Moore as Assistant Secretary and Tim Davidson as Treasurer. Barry McDonald (Training Officer), Darren Goodger (NSWCUSA), Alex Terry and John McQuillan were once again re-elected as Patrons of the HKHDCUA for the 2015/16 season. We also welcomed our esteemed Patron, Darren Goodger from the NSWCUSA to our AGM in 2015 who presented Ian Lewis with his 100 match milestone award, Bruce Wood with his 200 match milestone award, Simon Moore with his 250 match medallion and Geoff Hasler with his 300 match milestone award. Congratulations to all gentlemen on their terrific contribution to the HKHDCUA and the game of cricket. Darren also presented an informative overview of developments in Cricket NSW and its impact upon cricket throughout the state and Australian cricket which was most interesting as usual Training Programs Our regular season then started with our second visit from the NSWCUSA which was primarily led by Laurie Borg and Geoff Garland in August with support from Darren who was unwell and very busy at that time. This again was a successful venture with an average attendance of 16 participants there to learn the laws of the game or to do a refresher course. At the completion of the course, 10 persons sat the exam and all 10 passed making them eligible to join the NSWCUSA (if they were not already members). Further to this, Geoff Hasler and Barry McDonald again conducted several training courses locally. Geoff, Barry and John McQuillan conducted the 2015 Captain s Ticket Course, which was again very well supported by the Senior Competition team captains. The majority of attendees passed their exam. Geoff and Barry then also presented the now well established Level 1 Umpire Certification Course for coaches, managers and captains of junior teams with similar success. Thank you to Geoff, Barry and John for your excellent contributions in training so many people within the HK&HDCA area Appointments Summary & Scores The 2015/16 season, saw the HKHDCUA create a new record of 306 appointments filled for the season. Only 3 senior semi-final matches were not covered off from our commitment of covering a minimum of all A grade and A2 Grade games on turf wickets, all Rep matches, the Ross Turner and Glenn Hourigan Cup games along with all senior and junior semi-finals and grand finals an amazing effort by all our umpires and part-timers! Once again, all senior umpires had the opportunity to gain A Grade exposure at some stage during the season as part of their development and the group as a whole performed very well scoring an outstanding average score of 4.64 which was way up on the previous season (4.26). In the Kookaburra Cup, a healthy score of 4.24 was achieved (4.19 last season) - a terrific year yet again. We had two new umpires this season in Tim Crozier and Craig Easy. Tim had a very solid debut season whilst Craig had an outstanding season with excellent scores from the captains throughout the season. Well done guys on a great first season. The strength of our umpiring ranks has never been better and the competition is now ferocious (but friendly) for the big games at the end of each season. Very late in the season we were also joined by Jason Fletcher. Congratulations on becoming a HKHDCUA member Jason - we look forward to watching you develop into a very good umpire in the future. I personally wish to thank all our umpires for their continued support and professionalism at all levels of cricket. Your support of Simon Moore, with the Representative matches, and to myself with the Senior and Junior competitions and finals is essential, and as always, much appreciated. Off the field, we have again been led tremendously by our President in Geoff, the excellent work of Tim as Treasurer yet again and the solid support from Scott Reid and Simon in his capacity as Assistant Secretary. Further to these gents, the contribution of Gary Barton and Steve Hill cannot be under-estimated in the newly created role of Sponsorship/Functions Co-Ordinators. They were successful in negotiating sponsorship from the Asquith Bowling Club and driving several fun-filled and enjoyable events such as the Barefoot Bowls night, the Christmas dinner and inaugural Presentation/Dinner night held in April, all of which were very well supported by our members, guests and sponsors. Our sincere thanks go to Gary and Steve for their tremendous contributions. Sponsorship We must record our gratitude to Abbas Aly and his team at Triforce Sports for their wonderful support in providing excellent sun-resistant shirts over this, and past 10

12 UMPIRES ASSOCIATION (HKHDCUA): Continued seasons. The shirts look great and are most professional. To Abbas, and all the staff at Triforce Sports, we thank you for the wonderful support that you have shown to the HKHDCUA over several years now and we sincerely hope we can continue our strong relationship as partners for many more years to come. I must also publicly thank David Haynes (Chairperson) and David George (Executive Officer) of the Asquith Bowling Club in agreeing to sponsor our Association. We trust that our relationship with your club will be a long and successful one - we certainly have had a great start! It s a great and friendly venue, well located for us for all types of events, and also for us to enjoy ourselves after a game. Thanks gentlemen. Statistics Steve Wilson led the way this season with 30 appointments closely followed by Geoff and Bruce on 25, Simon 23, Steve Hill 21, Craig 18, John 17, Alf 16, Gary 15, Raja 14, Tim Crozier 13, Scott Reid and Toby Norrish 12, Barry and Ian 11, Rob Hanich 10, Paul Pastras 7 and Peter Schouten 5. Then we had Jason, and all our part-timers who helped us out in the semis and finals. Thank you to everyone listed including our part timers for your significant contributions during the season. Retirement of Simon Moore It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the efforts of Simon Moore who has announced his retirement from senior cricket and finished with an appropriate appointment in his 8th A-Grade Final (with Geoff) in March. This was in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the HKHDCUA. Thanks Simon, for your wonderful service of about 20 years in our district and your support as my Assistant Secretary over the past 2 years. It is a most significant contribution to cricket. Simon has indicated he will continue on in his current role if re-elected and also do some Rep games next season. NSWCUSA Ted Wykes Medal Finally, to cap off a magnificent season for Geoff Hasler and the HKHDCUA, I am delighted to advise all members that Geoff Hasler was recently awarded the coveted NSWCUSA Ted Wykes Medal for outstanding service as an umpire for the 2015/16 season. This is the highest umpiring award presented by the NSWCUSA outside of the Sydney Grade Competition for any umpire what an honour! Congratulations Geoff, on a wonderful achievement for yourself and the HKHDCUA! This advanced program provided subsidised, high quality coaching for U/12 U/15 representative standard players covering batting, pace & spin bowling, fielding and wicket-keeping. Both off-season programs were very successful with strong attendances and positive feedback from the players and their parents. HKHDCCA took on several new initiatives in , including running a primary schools Girls Super 8 program at Montview Oval in Term 4, 2015, which was organised by Edwina Chappel and Tim Inman; and a Super 8 Blast program at West Epping (YMCA) Oval in Term 1, HKHDCCA was pleased to induct Head Coach, Rod Hokin, as its second Life Member at the AGM on 11 August Congratulations to Shishu Sharma, HK&HDCA Rep. Col sent the following afterwards: On behalf of Scott Calvert and myself, we wish to thank the Coaches Association for making available two of your coaches for our junior coaching day. The expertise shown by both Will Fiedler and Hame Fullagar in dealing with the boys was outstanding, no wonder your association is spoken of so highly. We had over 30 players in the first session and about 15 in the second. All had a great day, with many of the parents commenting on how well the day was run. Once again, thank you for helping out our club today in making such a successful day. HKHDCCA held its annual Cricket NSW Community (Level 1) accredited coaching course at the Sportsbliss Active Indoor Centre, Thornleigh, on 19 July 2015, which was facilitated by Rod Hokin (Head Coach). 15 NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB Brad Haddin Nathan Lyon Daniel Hughes Chris Green Harry Conway The 2015/16 season can probably be best described as a roller coaster ride. We landed back in 5th spot in the Club Championship after being a real contender with 3 rounds to go. There were, however some great results: First up were our 2 minor premiers Green Shield and 4th grade. Both suffered undeserving losses in the semi-finals. And then there was 4th grade Minor premiers by a fair distance and deserved to take out the cup. 3rd grade missed the semis by 1 ball, 2nd grade fell short by 1 win and 1st grade missed the semis by.003 of a run! The 5th grade Premiership winners last year dropped to 15th! hence the roller coaster! We did come 2nd in the SCA spirit of cricket award in the mens and congratulations to the NDs women who took out first place. Some of the Representative achievements for the season were: - On the Test scene we have Nathan Lyon the country s greatest ever off-spinner. - In the Shield side Congrats to Daniel Hughes and Harry Conway. - In the Big Bash Chris Green and Thunder winning the title! NSW Contract next season. - Buddy Harriott Representing Futures X1 and ACT here. We do not promise the world to young players like other clubs, but we can promise 4 things 1. The best coaching structure in the SCA 2. Great facilities 3. A fair selection policy (ie rewards for performances) 4. That you will have a good time! Your playing days at ND s will be good fun mixed with hard work. Ie You only get out of something what you put into it. I believe ND s is the best Club in Sydney. It has a very strong and rich history. We are extremely active in programs that benefit players, members and the community. The joint Coaching Clinics, the Leadership Program again this year, the Green Shield Development Winter Program, the ND Schools Cup, our relationship with Special Olympics and charities. These programs put ND s on the map as a good community club. Let s do it all again together! Kind Regards, Mike Langford (Drifter) President NDCC We are proud of the strength of the younger players. Joel Foster, Baxter Holt, George Furrer, James Robertson, Sam Fanning, Jacob Heinrich, Ajay Singh and Aaron Bills all with wonderful achievements at State and School competitions. These performances are a result of everyone working together. Many thanks to Bruce Wood, Geoff Findlay and Bruce Parker for all their hard work. We do great things together! including Coaching Clinics, Coaching accreditation, Green Shield selections. We support each other s functions throughout the year. eg AGM s, Lunches, Presentation Nights, Ross Turner Cup, last year a trip to Sri Lanka and next year a real hope of getting to Barbados! We hope that every local junior who aspires to play grade cricket does so at their local grade club. As we have said before, we do not spoon feed players 14

17 HK&HDCA FEMALE CRICKET REPORT 2015 / 16 The season has been a groundbreaking one for female cricket in the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai region, with the launch of our inaugural school girls cricket competition in October 2015, introduction of the (now) perpetual Denise Annetts Spirit of cricket award and the ongoing participation of female cricketers across HK&HDCA age groups and the Sixers Girls Cricket League. Overall, we are confident that this season is one from which female cricket can continue to grow, develop and succeed in the region. Schools Competition Run every week at Montview Oval throughout Term 4, this Super 8s competition was attended by girls in years 5 & 6 across Hornsby Ku-ring-gai. The participating schools included Hornsby Heights, Thornleigh West, Turramurra, Mt Colah and Asquith Public Schools. Of course, this competition was only made possible because of the trememdous contributions by our key supporters, including: Tim Inman, on behalf of Commonwealth Bank of Australia (Hornsby branch) Bruce Wood, on behalf of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Coaches Association ( Coaches Association ), and his team of coaches: Nick McNay, Matt Wright, Hamish Fullagar and Calvin Breytenbach. Abass Aly and Justin Epthorp, on behalf of Triforce Sports. CBA pledged sponsorship of $1,000 for 2015, which went a long way in keeping costs low for our participants and reducing competition expenditure. The Coaches Association provided accredited coaches for each team so that all players had the opportunity to develop new skills. Triforce Sports sponsored all new equipment for our players, which was appreciated by players and their parents. We were also well supported by the HK&HDCA led by President Geoff Findlay and Executive Officer Craig Menzies. Denise Annetts Award Congratulations to Phoebe Overton of Hornsby District Cricket Club for winning the Denise Annetts Spirit of Cricket Award for Phoebe now plays in the under 10s, having started as a Milo in2cricketer. She has a reputation amongst her teammates and coaches for putting in strong efforts at training and on match day. Her desire to play the game to the best of her ability, with a fairness and determination, has earned Phoebe the award this year. Well done Phoebe! Female Cricket Across the Region Well done to Castle Hill RSL and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club for having teams participating in the under 17s division of the Sixers Girls Cricket League this season. Also, special mention to Asquith Rugby League Cricket Club for consistently strong female turnouts at their Milo In2cricket program. Finally, thank you to the HK&H Female cricket committee for all of your work. I look forward to working with you over the next season. Should you have any queries relating to female cricket, please do not hesitate to contact me. Edwina Chappel HK&HDCA Girls Development Officer 16

And Parents; please remember that there is NO smoking in and around the playing fields by Law. We now have a new school ground at Thornleigh West Public thanks to all the hard work by Veryan McAllister and Carolyn Ball. I would also like to thank the umpires for their hard work in the semi s and finals. A difficult Job well done. I would like to thank all managers, coaches and parents for their part in making it all happen for their cricketers. Finally, to all the players, well played I ll see you all next year. A Season Observation: I would like to see more of our successful Saturday morning players step up at Representative level. Most players who play in champion teams seem to go nowhere in senior cricket, however, those who work hard in the lesser performing teams seem to go places. Bruce Kimberley Junior Secretary 17

27 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT The season began with our T20 competitions across 5 grades. The 1st grade final was contested between West Pennant Hills - Cherrybrook and Sydney Lions. Having won the toss, the Lions batted steadily to put on 122 for the loss of 9 wickets, a total which proved too much for their opposition who were all out for 110 in the final over. The Sydney Lions also made the final in 2nd grade and adopted a similar tactic having won the toss. This time however they were dismissed in the final over having registered 106, their opponents, Mt Colah survived the loss of 3 quick wickets, reduced from 0/15 to 3/15 to win in the 19th over with 3 wickets still in hand. In 3rd grade, St Ives Wahroonga looked strong going into their final against Beecroft, and must have been confident having posted 7/144 off their 20 overs. Beecroft were having none of it, and reached 97 before they lost a wicket, Scott Reid in particular enjoying the day as Beecroft triumphed with 2 balls to spare. It is particularly pleasing to see that the teams used 15 bowlers between them in a competition that some feel doesn t give everyone an opportunity, the lesson here being that the opportunity is there if the captains want to use it! Sydney Lions again won the toss and batted first in the 4th grade final, but only posted 6/107 off their 20 overs. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook took some revenge for their 1st grade defeat and came back from 7/56 to win the match 8 down with 4 balls to spare. Thornleigh made no mistake in 5th grade after being put in to bat, posting 7/153 which proved too much for Castle Hill who were out for 87 in 17 overs. So 7 different clubs represented in the T20 finals, with a different club taking out each grade and Sydney Lions (3) and West-Pennant Hills Cherrybrook (2) the only teams to appear in more than one final. Who says this isn t a good way to get our season up and running! Once again we adopted a C4 competition as we had a glut of teams registering for C Grade (C2). This resulted in the splitting of C grade into 2, with the same ratings and weightings in the club championship. The Sunday competition struggled again and was contested by just 4 teams, with 2 of those coming from West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook. It may be that I am more acclimatised now, but I really didn t think it was a particularly hot summer and the longest period without rain seemed to occur immediately after the end of the season. All grades were affected by the weather and had matches abandoned, on some occasions a team had already attained a result on the first day but in some instances local conditions across our region meant that not every game was abandoned in the same round. There is little we can do to account for that as we simply can t control the weather. Congratulations to Asquith Rugby League who prior to the start of the season were unsure whether they would field a side in A Grade, but managed to put one together who eventually triumphed, to reclaim the T. E Rofe Shield, from a 3rd place finish, and boasted the grades leading wicket taker, Denver Rego (38). There was a change of the guard in A Grade as Normanhurst - Warrawee returned and Sydney Lions fielded a side in A Grade for the first time. Normanhurst - Warrawee finished 2nd while the Lions just missed out on a finals slot coming 5th. There were a number of changes in personnel for other clubs too. While Castle Hill RSL were cast adrift they did manage a win over West Pennant Hills - Cherrybrook as St Ives Wahroonga fielded a young side who finished 7th, but boated the grades leading run scorer in Tim Lovegrove (433). Berowra missed a few regulars and came in 6th despite Scott Griffin 41.67) winning the batting award and Francois Perrin 7.26) taking out the bowling. The guard also changed at West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook with the defending Premiers coming in 4th. That leaves only one side and Hornsby District deserve recognition for pulling together a side who ran out minor premiers and defeated finalists. While there was little doubt about the top 5 as the season drew to a close, no one was really sure who was going to finish as minor Premiers and what the order of the top 5 would be. In the semi-finals West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook had a poor start after winning the toss, all out for 128 in 60.4 overs, in reply Hornsby District registered 179 in 2 less balls, but the defending premiers weren t giving up and will wish they had the same aggression on day 1 as they put on 2/212 in just 25.5 overs and reduced Hornsby District to 3/5 before the minor premiers stabilised and finished 4/87 to reach the final. In the other semi-final, despite enjoying good spells, Normanhurst - Warrawee were not strong enough to overcome a determined Asquith Rugby League side, and were eventually beaten outright having pushed for a 2nd innings win from a first innings defeat. It will be interesting to see how Normanhurst- Warrawee fair next season with the added experience gained this season. In the grand final, higher placed Hornsby won the toss and decided to bat, with the forecast predicting rain for the 2nd day, they took a slow but steady approach to their innings. At 2/5 some would argue that they had little choice, but Edward Hollis was the pick of the Hornsby batting, putting on 50, while Rob Kirk was the pick of the ARL bowling with 4/42 as Hornsby District reached 189 off 91.4 overs. In reply, 17 year old Matthew Wright piled on 75 runs in what 26

28 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT : Continued I am told was a mature and patient innings, unfortunately he couldn t see his side home, but the rest of the team beat the rain with covers on and off the field throughout the second day before Asquith Rugby League saw it home 6/190 after 71 overs, with captain, wicket-keeper and club president Steve Loccisano at the crease. It doesn t get much better than that in your first season as president! Congratulations also to the following: Kookaburra Cup (A Reserve) Glenorie District decided to drop from A Grade and were minor premiers by 10 clear points from 2nd placed West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, who were just 3 points ahead of Mount Colah. A betting man may have analysed the statistics and noticed that Mount Colah hadn t lost a 2 day game all season, and they would have been hoping that the weather held out in the finals. Meanwhile SKLPS Simba came in 4th just 3 points ahead of 5th and a further 3 ahead of 6th. Going into the final, Glenorie District would have been confident having seen off SKLPS Simba in their semi-final putting on 178 runs and dismissing their opponents for just 25, not surprising given that Glenorie boast the leading wicket taker and winner of the bowling award in the grade, Riley Carpenter 9.23). Glenorie District also boasted the 2 leading run scorers for the grade with Mitch Tully (480), just beating Liam Tully (463). Not to leave him out however, the batting award went to Tim Starr of West Pennant-Hills Cherrybrook 36.11), whose 45 runs in a total of 155 in the semi-final was not enough to see off Mount Colah who had posted 9/202 when put in to bat. Neither Tully really fired in the final for Glenorie who were put into bat by Mount Colah as Tim Buwalda took 7 wickets in the first innings, (and 3 in the 2nd), restricting the minor premiers to just 115. It was Tim who finished not-out on 5 as Mt Colah crept across the line all out for 118 in reply. So it was on to a 2nd innings and Glenorie boldly declared 8/105 with enough overs left for a win or an outright defeat, but they had no option. Mount Colah saw it home reaching the target 6/103 after 31.5 overs. B Grade West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook ran away with the minor premiership by 19 points yet didn t feature in the batting or bowling awards which went to Tim Onions (batting 42.50) of 3rd placed Berowra and Sivasara Sooriakumar 11.53) of 2nd placed Sydney Lions. Michael Richards (468) was however the leading run scorer but couldn t save his West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook side from defeat to Kissing Point in a low scoring semi-final. Put into bat, Kissing Point must have been concerned putting on just 79 when put into bat, but that was 24 more than West Pennant Hills managed first time around. 95 off 59 in Kissing Point s 2nd innings took enough overs out of the game that despite their efforts West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook ran out of time at 4/71 off 10 overs at the end of the match. In the other semi-final, Sydney Lions who finished just 4 points ahead of Berowra (and Kissing Point) batted steadily to reach 5/131 in reply to Berowra s 129 having been put in to bat. So the grand final saw 2nd against 4th, with the only difference between the sides in the season a win to the Lions when Kissing Point could manage just a draw. There was little to separate the sides in the 1st innings as Kissing Point won the toss and put Sydney Lions in to bat, eventually dismissing them for 78. Finals are a rollercoaster of emotion and Kissing Point must have been disappointed to see the Lions reach 78 as they took them from 0/5 to 3/5 early on. They must have been even more concerned as they lost wickets regularly to get to 7/38. The rollercoaster continued on the up as they showed promise as they reached 59 before their hearts sank as they lost another wicket. They still needed 20 runs but only had 2 wickets remaining, they must have smelled the win as they equalled the Lions score, but suddenly, another wicket fell. They managed just another run before losing the final wicket, but it was all they needed. The Lions batted again and declared 9/122 with 58 overs more to play. Kissing Point also batted better 2nd time around and were only 4/104 as the game came to an end. B Reserve was again a 6 team competition and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook took another minor Premiership, but only 5 points separated 1st from 4th with Hornsby, Glenorie and Lankan Islanders occupying the other final places in that order. The first semi-final was as close as you would expect with the way the ladder finished, the Lankan Islanders reaching 118 in reply to West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook s 110 in the first innings. Declaring their 2nd innings 7/131 off just 27 overs the Lankan Island faced a barrage for 21 overs but held out 5/51 to make their first final in HK&HDCA competitions. In the other semi-final lower placed Glenorie boasted the winner of both the grade batting, Rodney Ribet 46.14) and bowling, Kirk Ryan 9.41) and put Hornsby in to bat. Hornsby District batted for 82.2 overs in making 208 runs. There was enough time left to chase that down, but Glenorie came up short with 146 and not enough time to get a reversal in a 2nd innings. On to the final and Hornsby put the Lankan Islanders in to bat, but may have regretted the decision as they recovered from 5/88 to make 257, with the grades leading run scorer Gajanan Mehandra-Rajah (516) put on 74 runs of 172 before he 27

29 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT : Continued fell, partnered by Teshan Weragama (98) who finished just 2 runs short of making a century, with a final total of 257. Hornsby could make only 99 in reply and were asked to follow on. Hornsby weren t giving up and in their 2nd innings they did at least equal the Lankan Islanders score, thanks to the efforts of Shriram Krishnan (68), but it took just one ball for the Lankan Islanders to win outright. C Grade Back to the 8 team competitions and a quotient of just 0.13 separated first placed St Ives Wahroonga from West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook. Glenorie were just 2 points behind them with SKLPS a further 7 points behind them. This was an interesting competition with the leading batsman and winner of the batting award for the grade, Scott Reid 42.3), not make the semi-finals, with his team Beecroft 8th and the leading bowler and winner of the bowling award Dhammika N Amarasinghe 15.68) in the 5th placed Sydney Lions side. In the first semi-final St Ives Wahroonga who had only lost 2 games all season came up against SKLPS who had lost 6. The odds favoured St Ives, but having won the toss they chose to bat first and only made 106 in 56 overs. SKLPS took their time and reached 109 just 5 wickets down in 60 overs, and the game was done. In the other semi-final Glenorie fared little better winning the toss and choosing to put West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook in to bat, eventually dismissing them for 197 runs off The game looked in the balance at 4/93 recovered from 2/7, but Glenorie were eventually dismissed for 150. Interestingly in the final West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook won the toss and chose to bat and they did so for 115 overs making 215 with SKLPS using 9 bowlers, and all bar one of them having 9 or more overs. There was little time left in the match and it was no surprise that SKLPS went for it and were dismissed for 65, losing wickets in batches as batsmen could not afford sufficient time to get their eye in. C2 was another very close competition. Going into the final round just 3 points separated the top 5 who had been swapping places for the past 3 rounds, and it was anyone s guess who would finish where. Eventually it was Wahroonga Blade Runners who took the minor premiership, and Mount Colah were unfortunate to just miss out on the finals, having been just a single point behind the eventual minor premiers going into the final round. In the first semi-final the Blade Runners had done their homework and having chosen to bat first set about neutralising the 2 leading wicket takers of the grade Karl Baxter (36) and Omer Jamal (35) of Berowra, and while they did pick up the wickets of the top 5, taking a total of 7 wickets between them Baxter 5/45 had to bowl 28 of the 86 overs as Blade Runners were eventually dismissed for 198. After the worst possible start 1/0 Berowra did recover to 1/61 before they lost regular wickets on their way to 10/119 off In the other semi-final Normanhurst Warrawee chose to bat first and reached 67 before losing their first wicket to Beecroft. Leading run scorer Hayden Benger and winner of the grades batting 51.64) and bowling award 10.82) could do nothing to stop the onslaught as it was 156 before the 2nd wicket fell as Normanhurst Warrawee went on to make 295 off 94 overs. It was an interesting chase as Beecroft lost their first wicket early but kept the run rate up for the remainder of the innings, if only they could have done so without losing wickets they would have won it, but came up short 218 off just 39 overs. In the final Normanhurst Warrawee put the Blade Runners in to bat and dismissed them in 34.2 over for just 57, only one player Anuj Sabharwal making double figures, Jack Reed the pick of the bowlers with 4/10. Anuj was on form with the ball as well, taking 6/28 as Normanhurst Warrawee did pass the score, reaching 74 but with only 2 making double figures. Batting again, Blade Runners declared 8/104 off 32. Normanhurst Warrawee dug in and were crowned Premiers as they made 5/43 off 40.2 as the weather finished any lingering hopes the Blade Runners had. C3 No questions in the ladder on this one as the unbeaten Normanhurst Warrawee did the same as West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook had done the previous season. 2nd to 5th was a closer affair with (in order) Hornsby, St Ives and Kissing Point just seeing off 5th placed West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook despite them boasting the leading run scorer for the grade, Harrison Miedler (526). Richard Arnott 56.78) of 6th placed Kenthurst and Upper Hills took out the grade batting award. In the first semi-final, the grade s leading wicket taker Sumit Ram (32) couldn t prevent Normanhurst Warrawee piling on the runs. Craig Woods was the first Normanhurst Warrawee wicket to fall, but not before he had contributed 102 to the 162 runs at that stage. The onslaught continued as they reached 355 off 91 overs having chosen to bat. Credit to Kissing Point as they made 209 off 45.1 overs when some might have thrown it away particularly after losing both openers with the score on 6. In the other semi-final it was Glenn Baxter and Matthew Wilson 11.74) who took out the grade bowling award, who did the damage to St Ives as they managed just 121 off 50.2 overs, David Drake making 48 of them and finishing not out. Jatinder Kumar (65*) did the damage in the chase as Hornsby cruised to a win 4/217 off 47. In the final Normanhurst Warrawee were put into bat and registered another centurion, Bryan Massey (114) on their way to 282 off Antonello Cappellazo, another with Kumar who 28

30 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT : Continued plied his trade in D2 last season showing that it is possible to make the step up with 4/41 off Hornsby had a go and despite being 4/24 recovered to 6/140 before the rain came and the minor premiers, Normanhurst Warrawee were crowned premiers. C4 was a grade in 3 parts, with the top 4 breaking away and St Ives and Kissing Point cast adrift at the foot of the table, Thornleigh and Kenthurst battling it out for the minor places. Minor Premiers West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook boasting the only 3 players in the grade to exceed 400 runs in the season, led by Ian Paterson (447), they took on Hornsby in the semi-final despite Hornsby having Mohan Somasundaram 45.38) who won the grade batting award. It was the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook trio who were victorious putting on 108 runs between them in a total of 211 off 88.5 overs. Hornsby managed just 64 in reply off In the other semi-final the Lankan Islanders, put into bat by 2nd placed Berowra declared their innings 3/312 at the end of the first day, Thisal Vidana unbeaten on 110. Hashan Subasingha 7.5) took out the grade bowling and with 6/23 made life hard for Hornsby as they made just 122 in reply. In the final Subasingha took another 6/36 to help restrict West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook to 192 off 72.4, the stand out was Ryan Gunn (78), who was the 4th best West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook batsman over the season making 337 at The Lankan Islanders had a go and put on 163 in 82 overs and such was the over rate that there was still time for West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook to be 3/41 off 11 at the end of the match and be crowned Premiers. D Grade was a 6 team competition which again split into 3. Minor premiers West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook finished a point above 2nd placed Berowra while the bottom 3 were separated by just 5 points with all of the 3 in contention for the last final spot going into the final round, Kissing Point eventually prevailing thanks to an outright win. Unfortunately the gap between 2nd and 4th was a staggering 36 points, with St Ives Wahroonga sandwiched pretty much in the middle in 3rd. The first semi-final saw the battle of the leading run scorers with Tim Morris (568) of Kissing Point up against Rob Love (561) who was 7 runs shy but had a vastly superior average of It was Raj Kulkarni (110) who helped West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook along to 265 off overs, with young Michael Harkin contributing 52. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook also boasted the leading wicket taker and winner of the grade bowling award, Dean Carlin 12.2), and with figures of 3/21 he helped halt Kissing Points efforts despite Tim Morris top scoring with 34, interestingly caught by Rob Love, all out for 167 off 43. In the other semi-final Berowra took on St Ives Wahroonga and both teams knew it would be a ding-dong battle. St Ives put Berowra in to bat and looked well placed until grade batting winner Martin O Brien 84.25, (how did they hide him?)) bludgeoned 12x 4s and a 6 on his way to 70 not out, a fair proportion of the 164 scored off Young Sol Balbi taking 3/4 off 2.3 overs for St Ives. St Ives set about the chase eagerly with Gavin Wingfield taking a run a ball 20 before nicking one behind with the score on 38, and the day ended with St Ives 3 down for 69. The game continued to swing back and forth and with just 18 runs needed with 4 wickets remaining, St Ives appeared to be in the box seat until they lost 2 in 2 balls twice to come up 8 runs short. The final looked like a tight contest on paper but Berowra were buoyed by their semi-final victory. Winning the toss, Berowra chose to bat and they were on 113 when Russel Yates, who had put on 82 of them was bowled. Mason Francis was eventually forced to retire due to his restriction of 40 runs, and Martin O Brien piled on another 52 as the declaration came 7/251 off 67 overs. Despite a reasonable start as West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook set about getting the runs or batting out the match, it was only late resistance from Roger Friend that contributed from the middle and lower order, with the dangerous Rob Love run out on just 15. So with the minor premiers dismissed for 118 off 64 overs, Berowra were declared the Premiers. D Reserve was another 6 team competition and having started the season strongly Berowra were eventually promoted to D1, in which as you will have read, they claimed the Premiership. The majority of the St Ives premiership winning side from the previous season moved up to D1, replaced by players who had struggled badly in D1 winning just 2 matches. 2 of those players, Nick Briffa 53.92) and Jason Ferrall 10.68) took out the most runs and wickets respectively, as well as winning the association batting and bowling awards. The top 4 had been decided for some time, although 13 points separated minor premiers St Ives from 2nd placed West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, and 20 points separated 3rd placed Hornsby from 4th placed Kissing Point. In the first of the semi-finals St Ives registered 220 having been put into bat by Kissing Point, who deserve mention as a team almost identical to the one who struggled so badly the previous season, yet developed together and it would not be a surprise if they mounted a serious challenge next season. Briffa top scored with 66 and Rupert Johnson put in his first half century (58) at the right time. Kissing Point could manage only 56 in reply with Roger Burton (17) and Extras (13) contributing more than half of those runs. 29

31 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT : Continued The other semi-final had a similar structure, higher placed West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook put into bat and the majority of the runs coming from Indranil Kukherjee (55) and Amitava Sen (62*) on their way to 190. Despite brief resistance from Cooper Fitzgerald (26) and Steven Kelly (35) wickets fell regularly and Hornsby could only manage 112 in reply. So the final was a rerun of the season. This time West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook chose to bat first and despite Pavel Kozyrev (22*) carrying his bat, they could only manage to set a target of 97. Briffa was dismissed for just 18 runs with the score at 2/41 but this was the closest that West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook came to victory as St Ives declared 9/215 as the rain came down and they claimed the Premiership. The damage was really done with Shriv Moorthy (33) at the crease with Dave Cooper (44) seeing their team past the target. I was at this game and once again, despite a number of changes in the sides, the game was played in great spirit with the 2 teams enjoying food and drink together after the match and again enjoying each other s successes throughout the season. Sunday competition We had just 4 teams enter the Sunday competition this year and the final looked like being quite a spectacle with a number of former A Grade players from both Asquith Rugby League and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Red playing off against each other. There was good spirit between the players but a 54 run penalty due to ratings didn t help Asquith Rugby League to defend just 103 which was chased down in just 14 overs, with the loss of just one wicket. We will need to rethink the structure of this competition for coming seasons. The John Hayne Cup this season attracted just 6 teams but from only 3 clubs and Castle Hill Green were the winners as the only team undefeated in a tournament that still proves to be great fun, friendly and competitive for those who don t quite make the finals. In the overall club competition, congratulations go to Normanhurst Warrawee, who take out the Club Championship by of a point from West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook. Credit goes, as always, to the clubs and their players for playing the fabulous game in great spirit throughout the season. I would like to thank the clubs and registrars for their efforts in complying with the rules this season; the SCC only had a few incidents and disputes to deal with. I would like to remind clubs that it is as much their responsibility as it is the SCC to ensure that players are competing in the correct grade. In an ideal world we wouldn t need ratings and I have spent a lot of time this season talking to players and the resounding theme coming from the vast majority of them is, once again, that they want to compete on an even playing field. As a player myself, I can tell you that it is no fun playing in matches where individuals are playing well below their ability. It was great to see the Premierships shared around amongst the clubs with West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook the only side to win more than one. Running the competition is very much a team effort and I would like to extend my thanks to the SCC members, John Klingberg, Roger Friend, Brad Rayner, and Carl Spears who joined the committee for the first time this season. The committee have given up countless hours throughout the season to ensure that the competition runs as smoothly and fairly as possible. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, and John Klingberg in particular deserves credit for the amount of time and effort he puts in as the association registrar and also match auditor. I would also like to thank Craig Menzies, our executive officer for his support and coordination of the covers as well as attending the SCC meetings to take the minutes and co-ordinate our ground hire and make changes to the draw. We should also thank the recreational staff of the three Councils who have prepared some fantastic wickets for us this season and continue to work (often against the weather) to improve them. Our thanks is also extended to the Umpires Association and HKHDCA executive who have given us support and helped to make a successful season. We are already well into the planning of the coming season which I hope will bring another fine and even closer competition next season. Gavin Wingfield, Senior Competition Secretary 30

33 A GRADE FINAL Venue: Asquith Oval Umpires: Geoff Hasler and Simon Moore Minor Premiers Hornsby won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that presented no alternative but to do so. The outfield was on the slow side, thus batsmen had to work for their runs, and the ARL bowling was well directed, led by left hander Rob Kirk and Pat Burfitt. Early success for the bowlers, with opener Chris Easy well caught down legside, with Richard Johnson bowled by Kirk, leaving Hornsby 2-5. Steve Smith and Ed Hollis steadied the innings adding 37 runs for the third wicket, with Smith departing, stumped off the bowling of Denver Rego. The resolute Hollis was the next to go, caught Rego bowled Kirk, for a very well compiled 50, with the score at 87. Alec Southam and Michael Solling added 26 before Southam departed, and wickets continued to fall, with Solling being the major contributor to the Hornsby total, accompanied by Hornsby Captain Dom Eggenhuizen, who scored 35 and 20 respectively. Hornsby were finally dismissed for a total of 189, compiled from 91.4 overs, having worked diligently all day to accumulate these runs, but perhaps, missing the opportunity to establish a bigger total on a pitch providing batsmen with every chance to score heavily. Bowling honours went to Rob Kirk, with 4/42 from his 16.4 overs, assisted by Rego and Burfitt, who each took 2 wickets from their 20 over commitments. Two overs remained to complete Saturday s play, with the experienced James Simpson-Lee partnering the young Matt Wright, and the day finished at 0-7, setting up a finish worthy of the A grade final contest. Sunday s forecast was suggesting that rain might interfere with play, as it certainly did later in the day, however, the ARL openers took the score to 47 before Simpson-Lee departed, caught behind from the inspired bowling change to Richard Johnson. Denver Rego joined Wright and this pair took the total to 90 before Rego was dismissed in identical fashion to Simpson-Lee. Andy Watson joined Wright but was out with the score at 102, bowled by Tim Ahern, who was getting spin from the wicket, not easily achievable. Greg Westwood joined the steady Wright, but was run out with the score at 119, and with 71 runs still required, the match was in the balance. Charlie Burfitt joined the fray and he and Wright took the score to 144 when Wright was caught by Vijay Kumar from the bowling of Pryor for an invaluable 75 run contribution. With 47 runs still needed for the win, the ever threatening drizzle turned to rain and the ARL team and supporters rushed out the covers to protect their chances of continuing the contest, if the rain ceased. An early tea was called by the umpires, and play resumed at 3:50 with a total of seven overs being lost. After the resumption Charlie Burfitt was dismissed in the 61st over, with the score at 151, still some 39 runs short of the target. Asquith Rugby League Captain, Steve Loccisano was joined by Pat Burfitt and this pair took the match to its conclusion, scoring the required 39 runs from the next 10 overs to give the ARL club the premiership. The contest was worthy of Grand Final status, with both teams in winning positions throughout the two days, and the weather did play its part. The youngest player in the match, Matthew Wright, played an extremely mature and valuable role in getting his team into a winning position, but credit also is due to Rob Kirk for his tireless efforts on the Saturday. The pitch was a credit to groundsman, Darren Green, and the Asquith Oval was presented in top condition. Congratulations to Asquith Rugby League and certainly to Hornsby as Minor Premiers for the 2015/16 Season. 32

57 HK&HDCA REPRESENTATIVE SECRETARY S REPORT 2015 / 16 This was our second season of rebuilding, and the results whilst mixed, are encouraging. The U10 Foster Shield team played in the qualifying Final and the U13 Gee Shield tied their Semi Final game, but as they were lower on the competition round table, Sutherland went on to play the Final. Most of the teams were within one win of making the preliminary finals rounds, and most lost a critical game by a very slender margin. In the seniors, there was no Durham Shield competition, as NSWDCA was unable to attract enough teams to compete. We did compete in the Telegraph Shield competition and retained the Telegraph Shield. We also fielded a Martin Shield team who reached the qualifying finals. The Presidents Cup teams results improved on last season. The U12 Alf James Cup team were the runners up in their competition, with our U16 Andrew Blamey Cup team winning their competition. A number of changes were introduced into the HK&HDCA Representative program last season. Some of these changes have been modified for the coming season, with an additional minor change or two. Hopefully these changes will take HK&HDCA back up near the top of the NSWDCA Shield and IDCA Presidents Cup competitions next season. Congratulations to Dhruva Thorat who broke the U15 Weblin Aggregate batting record with 380 runs. Cricket NSW introduced a new competition for the U13 and U14 age groups two seasons ago. It is known as the State Challenge Cup and there were a number of HK&HDCA players selected for this competition. They were: Jarod Baxter (U13) Jordan Fullagar (U13) Jack Nisbet (U13) Yash Patel (U13) Lachlan Shaw (U13) Cory Miller (U13) Jonathan Moran (U13) Connor Cameron (U14) Kenneth Chu (U14) Jordan Hayes (U14) Joe Hiley (U14) Kieran Krishnan (U14) Charlie Rose (U14) HK&HDCA also had a number of players selected for the CNSW Cricket Academy. They were: Oliver Jennings (U13) Patrick Xie (U13) Lachlan Shaw (U14) Yash Patel (U14) Jack Nisbet (U14) Jordan Hayes (U15) Dhruva Thorat (U16) Without the all the hard work from club administrators, coaches and managers, Reps would not be as successful as it is. Club coaches develop players batting, bowling, keeping, catching, fielding and general team skills, which the Rep coaches can then build a team around. The Rep coaches do not have the time to devote to fine tuning a batsman or bowler, we rely on the club coaches or specialist coaches to fulfill this part of a player s development. Reps would not exist without the clubs, and the support they provide to their players and officials. The ongoing development of Reps is reliant on this continued support. So to all the club administrators, coaches and managers, thank you. I would like to thank all of the Umpires, especially Simon Moore who had the unenviable task of assigning Umpires to all of the games, and having to deal with last minute ground changes. In addition to our normal grounds Barker College and Northholm Grammar allowed us the use of their ovals and training facilities, for which we are grateful. I would also like to thank our Representative sponsors, Eylex and TriForce Sports. Without the support of our sponsors we would not be able to supply a number of the resources we currently enjoy. The Representative Committee, which included Judy Shaw, Simon Reynolds, Shayne Harris, John Knox, Ravi Purushotham, Jo Nati and Paul McSweeney had to deal with a number of challenging issues, which included numerous late night s. For all of this, thank you. Thank you to Bruce Kimberley, the Association s Junior Secretary, the Association s Executive and Geoff Findlay, the Association s President for your continued support. Finally, thanks must go to the parents and families. Without your support there would be no training, games, lunches, afternoon tea, scoring and numerous other tasks. Thank you Bruce Parker 56

65 REPRESENTATIVE RECORDS: Contined Under 23 Telegraph Shield The Hornsby under 23 lads were extremely happy and excited to hear that the Daily Telegraph Shield was back up and running this year and were confident of making it 4 in a row. The boys and I are proud to be supporting a competition that has been around since 1922 and would love to see it get back into prominence one day and become the competition that it should be. This year we managed to have a couple of convincing wins in rounds 1 and 2 against Manly and Blacktown. Richard Johnson lead the way with the bat against Manly with 57, he was supported well by Rory Green (28), Chris Walker (36), Shane Cash (26) and Matt Buwalda (22) in a score of 212. The bowlers made light work of the young Manly team rolling them for 85. Chris Walker, Matt Buwalda, Warren Saldanha and Rory Green all took 2 wickets apiece. In round 2, we also made light work of Blacktown, batting first on a road at Parklands we made 264, Daniel Mills (41), Richard Johnson (47), Matt Buwalda (58) and Tim Ahern (21), made solid contributions to the big total. Again, our bowling was too good dismissing Blacktown for 125, Ciaran De Kort being the destroyer taking 5/24 in a hostile, fast spell of bowling, he was ably supported by Jack Cincotta (2/18), Richard Johnson (1/16) and Chris Easy with 4 catches behind the stumps. In round 3 we unfortunately struggled for numbers and came up against a pretty solid Sutherland side. Bowling first we rolled Sutherland for 71, Mitchell Fullager bowled well and with great pace to take 5/20 and was again supported by Jack Cincotta (3/20). Our batting simply capitulated for 62 as we could not figure out a forward defence, top scorer was Chris Easy with 19. A big thanks must be said to Matt Dayhew, Tony Parker and Ben Parker for coming down and helping out as well as contributing solidly. So then came the Grand Final, where we had the huge privilege of playing on Glenn McGrath Oval in Sutherland, it was such an honour to be able to play there and we would love more opportunities like this in the future. We lost the toss and unsurprising Sutherland chose to bat, our bowlers were exceptional on a flat wickets with a very quick outfield. Chris Walker snared 2/36, James Burrell 2/27, Richard Johnson 1/16, Matt Buwalda 1/29, Mitch Fullager 2/28 and Tim Ahern 1/16 as well as a direct hit run out by skipper Chris Easy. Chasing 161 looked like a small total, but the Sutherland bowlers were extremely disciplined and made us work extremely hard. We needed one person to step up and score a big one, that person was our man of the match and player of the tournament Richard Johnson scored 70 of the finest runs you will see. We ended up running down the total with 1 wicket to spare with Warren Saldanha and Shane Cash playing absolutely sensational innings under extreme pressure to secure our win and the premiership. It was a great season and we are all looking forward to next season to hopefully back up our premiership. Also, congratulations to Chris Walker who has now finished his Telegraph Shield career after playing the last three seasons of the competition. 64

66 HK&HDCA ANNUAL GOLF TEAM EVENT KOOINDAH WATERS RESIDENTIAL GOLF AND SPA RESORT The fifth HKHDCA 4 Ball Ambrose Team Championship at Kooindah Waters Resort drew an enthusiastic group of some 64 players representing the ARL, Beecroft, Berowra, Hornsby, Kissing Point, St Ives and WPHC clubs together with teams from the Umpires Association, two groups of dads from the Gee Shield Representative team and a team from the Ku Ring Gai Council staff. We were treated to great weather, the golf course in tremendous condition, as always, so there were no excuses to play other than superior golf, except for the somewhat questionable techniques displayed by the majority of the competitors. This cannot be said of the winning four, representing the St Ives club, of David Flak, Sam Whitely, Gary Boyd and Scott Thomson, who shot 66 off the stick, to record a net score, with the Beecroft team of Jack McGann, Brad Martin, Ryan Bailey and Luke Harris also with 66 off the bat, but a net score of being the runners up. This victory now sees the St Ives club leading with three victories and Berowra have been the winners on two occasions IT IS TIME FOR OTHERS TO GET ORGANISED AND BREAK THE DOMINANCE OF THESE TWO CLUBS. Best scratch score was recognized this year and was won by Mick Tozeland, Matt Tozeland, John Bell and Brett Farrell (Kissing Point) with an eight under par 64, pretty good golf on this challenging layout. Bradman Award, and this was, not for the first time, won by President Geoff Findlay, ably assisted (or not) by Mitch Burger and Pete Hunter, who, somehow, took a collective 76 strokes to complete their journey around the 18 holes and the various water hazards that make Kooindah such a great layout. Our sincere thanks are extended to the staff at Kooindah Waters, David Lulham, the Director of Golf, Head Professional, Mark Churcher and the Group Golf staff, especially Katrina Daniels, who all assist in making our day a most enjoyable experience. My thanks to Kooindah Waters for their generous donation of the major prize to the winning team in addition to the Geoff Hasler Trophy. YES, we will be going back to Kooindah Waters in 2017 and you are invited to join us for a great day, just an hour up the M1 at this terrific venue. 67 ROSS TURNER CUP SUNDAY, 20 SEPTEMBER 2015 TURRAMURRA OVAL HK&HDCA s showcase junior representative match called the Ross Turner Cup (RTC) has been held since and features the outstanding players in our district from the U/15 age group and below. The annual East v. West contest was originated by Tom Richmond, OAM, Life Member and Patron of both HK&HDCA and HKHDCCA, who passed the responsibility to Bruce Wood, President, Coaches Association (HKHDCCA) in The RTC & GHC fixtures highlight our emerging junior talent and are focused on accelerating the development of our representative standard players. The previous 17 RTC matches have unearthed some outstanding cricketers over the years, with an amazing 22 players graduating to play First Grade cricket in Sydney. The Cup is named in honour of Ross Turner, one of our Association s most famous products, who became Northern District s most successful captain, winning two First Grade premierships. Ross worked for Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia, pioneering development activities, before continuing his magnificent contribution to cricket by working for the International Cricket Council (ICC) in the development of cricket in overseas countries such as Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Afghanistan and India. He is now the Director of Cricket at Newington College in Sydney. The 18th annual RTC match took place on 20th September 2015 at Headen Park, Thornleigh, after rain made the turf conditions at Turramurra Oval unplayable. HKHDCCA appointed two emerging coaches Mitch Fullagar (West) and Nick McNay (East), who did an excellent job. The RTC captains were Dhruva Thorat (West) and Connor Slater (East). Experienced umpires Bruce Wood and Geoff Hasler were appointed to officiate their 10th RTC match. The players shirts were again kindly provided by our generous sponsor, Triforce Sports (Abbas Aly). Another sponsor, Kookaburra Sport (Cameron Eve) supplied the match balls, stumps and Player of Match award. The official souvenir RTC program, full scorecard (see page opposite) and some terrific team and action photos taken by Paul McNay and Mohamed Rizme can be accessed via the HKHDCCA folder on the Association s website. 69 GLENN HOURIGAN CUP - SUNDAY, 20 SEPTEMBER 2015 KARUAH PARK HK&HDCA s showcase junior representative match called the Glenn Hourigan Cup (GHC) has been held since and features the outstanding players in our district from the U/13 age group and below. The GHC match is named after Glenn Hourigan, the Association s Representative Secretary from 1988 to Glenn gave wonderful service to HK&HDCA rep. cricket and was inducted as a Life Member in The annual East v. West GHC contest was instigated by Tom Richmond, OAM, Life Member and Patron of HK&HDCA, following the success of the Under 15 Ross Turner Cup fixture, which commenced five years earlier in The responsibility of organising the annual RTC & GHC matches was passed onto Bruce Wood, President HKHDCCA (Coaches Association), in These matches highlight our emerging junior talent and are focused on accelerating the development of our representative standard players by playing a competitive intra-association match (maximum 50 overs each side). The 13th annual GHC contest was held on 20th September 2015 at Karuah Park, Turramurra. The GHC captains in 2015/16 were Lachlan Shaw (West) and Jordan Fullagar (East). The popular GHC T20 matches were played on 6th September 2015 at Foxglove Oval, Mt Colah, with 4 teams of 12 boys each playing two exciting T20 matches. The Finch T20 team won the final Coach - Matt Wright; Captain Jordan Fullagar. Finch 5/91 (S. McAllister 23 ret., J. Fullagar 10 ret, M. Goonaratne 19) def Marsh 2/89 (L. Shaw 24 ret., B. The players shirts were again kindly supplied by our generous sponsor, Triforce Sports (Abbas Aly). HKHDCCA provided coaching opportunities for some Watson Shield representative players, with Jamie Shaw and Andrew Harvey (West) and Matt Wright and Fraser Wilson (East) coaching the GHC teams. All four lads did a great job and guided their teams impressively. Steve Wilson and Alf James OAM thoroughly enjoyed umpiring this GHC match. 71 Seymour s Creek Sports Field The Need for Sporting Fields It is nearly a quarter of a century since the last new general sporting playing field was brought into use in Hornsby Shire. Greenway Park, at Cherrybrook, came into use in 1994 and Foxglove Reserve, prior to that, came into use in 1983, constructed over a remediated landfill site. Obviously, the population of the Shire has undergone massive increases since then. Most major sports have now moved away from seeking home grounds for clubs to situations where they try to roster teams as closely as possible to their places of origin. Agreements to use school grounds have helped provide additional space, but the situation has now become critical. There are some sports that have had to reject enrolments because the facilities are simply not there. In Australia, sport is part of the way of life. We are a nation that prides itself on its sporting records and on its image of the great outdoors. The Australian tradition is that young people can participate in sport at whatever level they can achieve. It is an activity that moulds our society and provides a common interest. There are, of course, activities other than organised sport that rightly have their advocates. The plain fact is, however, that sport, considered as a whole, does more to occupy young people in healthy and socially beneficial activity than any other recreation. This year, for example, cricket had record numbers of players at junior level seeking to play the game. In our Shire, sport has a long tradition. There are records of cricket being played at Hornsby as early as 1877 and in this area, now Brooklyn, as early as The present Brooklyn Park was set aside as a cricket ground by 1895 and matches were played against a variety of opponents, with most of the town turning out to watch. Educators have watched, with some apprehension for the future of young people, as developments have shot up in the more closely populated areas, without additional playing fields provided to cater for the needs of youth. The available land is now limited and opportunities have been missed, but the present Council deserves great credit for recognising that it is a problem that needs to be addressed urgently. How the Ground Was Formed From about 1956 to 2005, the former dairy site at Brooklyn had been an untidy mess. During the early 1980s, extensive dredge material from the river was dumped on the location, rendering it useless until it had time to consolidate. The 1995 Brooklyn Management Plan determined that the possible future use of the area would be as a sporting field. During the late 1990s, the Northern Metropolitan Cricket Council, with Tom Richmond as chairman, pushed for the sporting field to be completed. The Freeway had reduced the travel time to Brooklyn, drawing this area relatively closer to the more densely settled suburbs in the Shire. At the last Council election, in 2012, Nathan Tilbury, at that time President of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association, ran on the promise that he would campaign for improved sporting facilities. Quite specifically, he expressed interest in seeing the sporting field at Seymour s Creek come into existence. Since his election, he has pushed for the ground to be constructed. He was well supported by Council staff, who began to stockpile, at Seymour s Creek, excess soil from jobs such as the excavation for the Hornsby pool. When an artificial surface was provided for Pennant Hills No 3 ground, the turf had to be removed. It was delivered to Brooklyn and the main ingredients for the new playing field were then available, virtually without budgeted funds. Some additional cost items were added to the budget and we are all hopeful that an amenities shed will be provided on site at a location yet to be determined. While Cr Tilbury s contribution has been very much evident, the whole Council deserves credit for its support of the project. Plans are now being discussed for providing further playing fields to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding junior population of the Shire, and we will watch these plans with great interest. 70

73 53rd LIFE MEMBER OF HK&HDCA INDUCTED IN 2015 HK&HDCA held its Annual General Meeting on 28th July 2015 and one of the highlights was the induction of David Lea (pictured below) as the Association s 52nd Life Member. It was recommended to the Life Membership committee that David Lea be inducted as a Life Member in recognition of his significant and exemplary contribution to the Association over many years. His exceptional and exemplary service to the Association included: Club Delegate to the Association from 1977/78 to 91/92 continuous Association Executive Committee member from 1977/78 to 1987/88 Association Representative Secretary 1985/86 to 1987/88 Took a lead role in the successful fight to retain the Kenthurst Park turf wickets David was also a Jim Fuggle medal recipient in 2003 in recognition of his contributions His exceptional and exemplary service to the his club, Kenthurst Upper Hills included: Holding the position of President for three years Holding the position of Vice-President for ten years Involvement as a team selector for numerous seasons Club delegate to the Kenthurst Park Committee Coaching numerous Junior teams David has also just completed his 50th consecutive season with the Kenthurst Upper Hills Club and is the first person within the Association to achieve this milestone with a single Club scoring over 13,000 runs and taking 424 wickets. The Life Membership committee had no hesitation in recommending David Lea for life membership of the Association and the members present at the Annual General Meeting were in agreement. Vale: James Scuz Allen ( ) A unique and intelligent soul bowled out February 28, 2016 following a long and brave battle. After a gutsy innings, we rise for a standing O as he makes the long walk from the middle, celebrating the wonderful stroke play with rich memories of a great life. As a dedicated student and fervent spectator of the noble game, from Cheltenham Oval to the SCG to Lords, he enjoyed his last days watching triumphant as his revered Australian cricket team regained their number 1 test status. Much loved and eldest son of Jude and Pete (dec); dearly loved brother and brother-in-law of Stephen and Veronica, Jonathan and Mel, Richard and Leann and Christina and Rob and treasured uncle of their children. James Allen has been a much loved player with Beecroft CC in Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & District Cricket Association competitions for more than 40 years and will be remembered by everyone who he has played with and against. With a technique unique to himself as an extremely stubborn opening batsman James scored 4,323 runs and carried the bat on 6 occasions yet his only century were his 101 not out innings. James also took 135 catches and 57 wickets. James was a fantastic character with his love for cricket at the forefront of his career. James knowledge of the history of the game, particularly Ashes Tests, was second to none with even the smallest detail of every innings of every player throughout history at his beck and call. We will miss James Kenneth Allen greatly but will remember him forever. 72

74 THE PATHWAY THROUGH A LIFETIME OF CRICKET Most cricketers start their playing career at an early age in the backyard with Test Matches against Mum, Dad or their siblings. Playing rules are simple a boundary four into the rose bushes, but over the fence into the neighbour s yard is six and out, plus having to go and recover the ball! Just as the child starts his/her formal education at kindergarten level, Kanga (or, as it has been re-badged over the years for marketing purposes, Milo Cricket and In2Cricket) is the kindergarten of a club which, like the school system, is the first step in the pathway that takes the child to a possible lifetime of involvement in and enjoyment from the game. At that age, children and their parents are reluctant to move straight into competitive hardball cricket, but are looking for an introductory non-competitive skills and fun based structured program to introduce them to the present day game. Thank you to our Sponsors All Clubs, members and associates are encouraged to support the products and/or services provided by our various sponsors This starting platform allows development of hand/eye co-ordination and cricket skills but importantly sees the child become active and socialising in a team/group environment. It also gives mums, dads and even grandparents an opportunity to participate and be involved in the activity with their children and thus build stronger family relationships and, for the club, provides a source of parent volunteers in the future as the child advances through the junior age groups. There is no such thing as a good or bad Kanga player and this concept can lead to it becoming part of a club s culture with the possible adoption of a participation over results policy that embraces the aim of giving equal opportunity to every player within each team and age group. As the child moves through primary and secondary levels at school (years 1 to 12), so too he/she advances from Kanga through the junior age groups from Under 8 to Under 16 gaining knowledge and further skills, forming lasting friendships with fellow teammates as well as an appreciation of the meaning of the phrase The Spirit of Cricket which would hold them in good stead in their life outside the cricket arena. At the same time, they might test their ability and acquired skills against others of similar age beyond their normal weekly competition game by becoming available for selection in their Association Representative teams. Having reached the age of 16, the player graduates to the equivalent of tertiary education level Seniors where, like education, rankings start to be made on ability. After many continuous years of cricketing in this area, the player is entitled to be known as a Graduate of the School of Hard Knocks in Cricket and, as an Alumni, to play with similar age players in Over 40 s Masters or Over 50 s Classics matches. Upon retirement from active play, the player, by then a senior in both age and experience, might become an umpire!
