6 EXECUTIVE REPORT President s Report It is with tremendous pleasure that the Executive of our Association presents the 83 rd Annual Report, inclusive of our Financial Accounts. The 2008/09 season continued to be one of progression and consolidation. The hard-working Executive initiated many projects, with some requiring further development in the season to come. We extend our sincere thanks to the respective councils (Hornsby Shire, Ku-ring-gai Shire and The Hills Shire), for the ongoing commitment and hard work of their staff. Additionally to the NSWDCA and Cricket NSW, the efforts and support is truly appreciated here, at the grassroots level of our sport. Our relationship with the Northern District Cricket Club (NDCC) continues to improve in many key areas and it is extremely pleasing to see many of our former representative players move into the higher grades of the SCA competition. Particularly impressive was the rise to prominence of David Lowery (Kenthurst/Upper Hills) with his maiden first-grade century after only a few games in the top grade. NDCC are to be applauded for embarking on the development of an extensive off-season junior cricket academy, Young Rangers, to facilitate the ongoing development of our highly talented younger players. This change in direction will evolve to encompass all of our junior players in the years to come. The 2008/09 season has seen many highlights, amongst them being: Congratulations to the Asquith Rugby League (ARL) A-Grade, for winning a 4 th successive A-Grade premiership. This equals the second longest winning streak of consecutive A-Grade premierships in the 83 years of competition held within the Association. Congratulations to the West Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook (WPH-C) who won the Reg Vernon Trophy (Senior Club Championship) for the sixth consecutive season, an Association record. Barry McDonald (WPH-C) was awarded the "Cricket NSW 2008 / 09 Sydney North Volunteer of the Year", for his tireless work for his Club and the many years of service to the HK&HDCA. Kissing Point who reached the final of the Michael Clarke Twenty/20 Open Age Knockout Competition. The U13 IDCA who won their competition, winning four of the five games they played. The continued support and commitment of our major sponsor, Kookaburra Sports. The HK&HDCA truly appreciate the ongoing support and involvement of all our Patrons, including our two ladies of the game, Lisa Sthalekar and Denise Annetts. Seven clubs shared the senior competition spoils, with three of our smallest clubs experiencing the sweet taste of victory in their respective divisions. Berowra appears to be the big improver, with three premierships. Whilst Normanhurst-Warrawee (2) and WPH-C (4), shared the spoils in the junior competitions. Normanhurst-Warrawee won the Jonathon Myers Memorial Cup (Junior Club Championship). Murray Macdonald and his merry band of workers are to be congratulated as they took on the onerous task of overseeing the purchase and delivery of covers to all of our turf grounds. Our A-Grade, Colts, Masters and Representative players will all vouch for the value of this substantial financial outlay, as it appears more turf games were played than in the previous season. Warren Jackson has done a tremendous job in a short period of time as the incumbent Representative Secretary. The recent Representative trials at the SCG nets for the U/14-16, organised by Warren, were a great success (attendees: U14-37; U15-51; U16-28). Finally, to our respective Executive Officers (Graeme Kurtz / Benjamin Gussey) and the large number of volunteers, I sincerely thank you for your amazing levels of enthusiasm, drive, energy and commitment as our Association would not prosper without your efforts. To the Life Members, Executive Members, Patrons and Club Delegates my most sincere gratitude is extended to you all on a job that has been well done once again. I look forward to your ongoing support and involvement in the Association for many years to come. It has been a pleasure to be involved with so many fine people who give so much back to the grass roots of our cricket community. Take care, stay safe and enjoy your respective winter sports. 7 Vice-President s Report The HK&HDCA 2008/09 season was a great success. I know from first-hand experience that the standard in the senior grades improved considerably particularly at the Colts & A2 level which is crucial to the development of the standard of our A grade. The C grades also considerably improved in standard on last season. With the positive development of the Colts & A2s competitions we have seen some very good young cricketers come through to A grade which has been a breath of fresh air for all involved. The senior competition as a whole went through a raft of changes which were a bit rough to implement but overall I think all Clubs would agree that these changes were necessary & will certainly lead to a fairer, more enjoyable senior competition for all. The two most significant changes were the new electronic results system & the expanded ratings system. With a bit of tweaking to both for next season they will be terrific tools for everyone in 2009/10. For this I must congratulate Steve Wilson and the Afternoon Committee. The A.C. boys had plenty of bumps in the road and mountains to climb along the way but they persisted and we will all be the better for it next season and beyond. Congratulations to ARL for taking out the A grade competition for the fourth consecutive season which is a mighty effort. Bruce Kimberley and his team, as always, did an excellent job with the juniors. Congratulations to Normanhurst- Warrawee for winning the Junior Club Championship. They have some fantastic young cricketers coming through. A huge thanks to Clint Johnson for his work with the Representative teams again this season. Clint will move on next season & we welcome Warren Jackson into that crucial role. Bruce Wood did a sterling job with the umpires. I know from first hand reports from captains that Bruce s team has improved immensely from last season. Well done Bruce for an often thankless job. This season also saw us with a professional Executive Officer for the first time ever. Young Ben Gussey took on the challenge mid season and his role will develop and expand to become a crucial cog in the Association s growth for many seasons to come. Finally thanks to HK&HDCA President, Mark Rushton who leads a very proactive Executive Committee. We are lucky to have Mark as our head and the Association is in excellent hands right across the board. I am certain this will lead to an increase in our team numbers for both seniors and juniors in 2009/10. Nathan Tilbury Vice President

8 Executive Officer s Report A New Role - Since taking on the Executive Officer role late last year, there has been a wide-range of challenges and opportunities. As with any new role, both the Executive and I have had the opportunity to develop the role as new challenges arose. A Rare Opportunity - Recently four delegates from HK&HDCA attended a CricketNSW forum for the Sydney North region. Represented were all Grade Clubs and Associations within the region s jurisdiction, allowing an opportunity to generate ideas and share a vision for the growth of cricket. The forum was called in response to the growth of Twenty/20 Cricket; suggested by CricketNSW to be a oncein-a-generation rejuvenation and reinvention of our game. A change of this magnitude has not been witnessed since Kerry Packer introduced World Series Cricket in Although some cricket traditionalists may question the value of the new format, Twenty/20 is here to stay. Now would be the opportune time to quickly reflect on the benefits that World Series Cricket provided from 1977, such a sponsorship, increased player wages, promotion and television coverage. All of which had a long-term, beneficial effect on grass-roots participation and the development and professionalism of cricket. As it was back in 1977, we now have a great launch-pad for recruitment, development and reinvigoration of cricket. Best of all, the media promotion that Twenty/20 provides requires no effort on our part. To put the cherry on the metaphorical cake, we are coming up to another winter Ashes series which has historically provided a 10% boost to player participation rates. With this rare opportunity, it is important for the Association and clubs, whether junior and/or senior based, to consider their future direction. Unfortunately senior cricketers do not materialize overnight; they are a product of recruitment and development often from a very young age. I am sure many cricketers in our Association were raised on a diet of leather and willow. Programs such as In2Cricket and CricHit cater to young boys and girls and can provide future growth development for all clubs. These programs are run by CricketNSW and they are widely promoted through the playcricket.com facility. Senior Cricket - With the new mycricket system put in place we now have an opportunity to accurately report player numbers. There may be discrepancies in previously reported numbers as some estimates were made to obtain numbers. Nonetheless, the table (next page) still gives a pretty good indication of how the Association has been travelling. Over the last decade numbers have remained stagnant but over the last couple of years they have declined. At an Association level we plan to address this through increased advertising and promotion. Now would be an ideal opportunity for all clubs to investigate strategies that can be implemented in addition to the Association. Unfortunately for some, we are moving out of the era of the volunteer and heading towards the non-paid professional. With increased pressure from other sporting codes, the financial crunch and an ageing demographic, amateur sporting clubs are being attacked from all angles. It is important that all clubs implement good practice; proper financial management, open communication with related bodies and a sound internal structure. It would be wise for all clubs to consider some of the administration ideas provided online by the Australian Sports Commission -

9 A Special Mention Robert William Richmond - Congratulations to Bob Richmond who recently celebrated his 100 th birthday. Bob Richmond is the father of HK&HDCA life member Tom Richmond OAM. For his birthday Bob received a visit from Judy Hopwood, State MP for Hornsby. Presented to Bob was the official gold seal of approval and royal photo from HRH Queen Elizabeth 2. In addition he received letters of congratulations from NSW Opposition Leader Barry O Farrell, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Governor General Marie Bashir, NSW RSL President Don Rowe and NSW Premier Nathan Rees. Our President, Mark Rushton, was also very eager to extend his congratulations and sent a letter on behalf of our Association to mark this wonderful occasion. In particular, I would like to direct attention to this excerpt of Mark s letter that puts this achievement in to perspective;...i can only imagine being a century old makes one reflect back over one s life and all the amazing changes that have happened in our world. Your 100 years of life has witnessed two World Wars, The Great Depression, the Federation of our nation almost in its entirety, the construction and subsequent opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and not to mention Sydney s population grow from about 600,000 at the time of your birth in 1909, to its current population of 4.3 million. I would be remiss not to mention two other events that took place; Our 2009/10 Junior & Representative Presentation Night at Asquith Boys High School was a great success. In attendance were, Greg Mail (Current New South Wales Representative), Lisa Sthalekar (Australian Women s Vice-captain & HK&HDCA Patron), Denise Annetts (former Australian Women s Test Cricketer & HK&HDCA Patron), Nick Berman (Mayor of Hornsby Shire), Michael Procajlo (CricketNSW), Patron and Life Members - Col Cooper and Tom Richmond OAM, and Life Members Alf James OAM, Bruce Kimberley, Barry McDonald, Ross Anderson and Andy Bayles. Executive Members, Nathan Tilbury, Clint Johnson, Mark Rushton and Bruce Wood were also present, and instrumental in the night s success. A big thanks must also go to Simon Smyth, who has generously volunteered his time to MC our last two Presentation nights. Simon has also been a long term contributor to Representative Cricket in our Association and his contribution is greatly appreciated. We certainly hope to have him continue his role next season and beyond. We were also honoured to receive correspondence from George Pennicook MBE, who was inducted as a Life Member of HK&HDCA in We are always excited to receive correspondence from our distinguished Life Members, particularly an MBE inductee. Finally, I would like to offer my gratitude to those who have eased the transition. First and foremost, I would like to thank Mark Rushton whose boundless energy and vision for the Association helps keep all in check. I must thank Andy Bayles for his vast knowledge and help in all association matters. Thanks to Bruce Kimberley & Bruce Wood; both run very tight ships easing pressure on my role. Thanks to Nathan Tilbury, who shares some fantastic ideas on developing cricket in our region. A thank you and congratulations to Brian Gibson; the system he has implemented has progressed our online presence far beyond most, if not all, rival Cricket Associations. Thanks to Geoff Hasler for all his work behind the scenes. Thanks to Steve Wilson and the Afternoon Committee. At the commencement of this role I was witness to the rather thankless and unrelenting role that Steve took on. Hopefully, this season will provide the calm after the storm. 10 FINANCIAL REPORT The Result for the Year- The result for the year has been inflated by the last part of the accounting treatments that I referred to in last year s report. This will be the last impact of those transactions. Our reported result was a surplus of $8,736, which compares to the result of $15,547 for the 2007/08 year. There has been no provision for a transfer of funds to the Ground Maintenance Reserve this year, following substantial provisions in recent years. During the year your Association has been revising its banking arrangements, with a view towards maximising interest and reducing bank charges. Some of the changes made have been: The creation of a term deposit, with an initial balance of $50,000, which was transferred from the Ground Maintenance Fund; and the creation of new low fee accounts to replace existing accounts. This process should be finalised before the start of next season, and I would like to thank Mark Rushton for his efforts and assistance with these moves. There has been significant capital expenditure during this season, with the Association purchasing covers, trolleys and a laptop for a total cost of $21,500. I would like to thank the clubs for their assistance in paying invoices this season, and we are in the happy situation of only one affiliated body being unfinancial at the moment. Steps are being taken to address this. Finally, I would like to thank all of my fellow executive members for their assistance and guidance during the year. David Toose Treasurer

13 Statement By Members of the Committee The committee has determined that the Association is not a reporting entity and that this special purpose financial report should be prepared in accordance with the accounting policies outlines in Note 1 to the accounts. In the opinion of the committee the financial statements as set out in the Statement of financial Position and Statement of Financial Performance and Notes thereto: presents a true and fair view of the financial position of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills district Cricket Association Inc. as at 30 April 2009 and it s performance for the year ended on that date. at the date of this statement there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association Inc. will be able to pay its debts as and when they fall due. 14 Notes to and Forming Part of the Accounts For the Year Ended 30 April 2009 Note 1: Statement of Accounting Policies This financial report is a special purpose report prepared in order to satisfy the financial report preparation requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act of NSW. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity. The report has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 2001 and the following applicable Accounting Standards: AASB 1002: Events Occurring after Reporting Date AASB 1026: Cash Flow Statement AASB 1031: Materiality No other Australian Accounting Standards, Urgent Issues Group Consensus Views or other authoritative pronouncements of the Australian Accounting Standards Board have been applied. The financial report is prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets. The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this report: (a) Income Tax The committee is of the opinion that the Association is not liable for tax by virtue of the exemption of member income under the principal of mutuality. For this reason the accounting standard Tax Effect Accounting has not been applied nor has any charge for income tax been made in the accounts. (b) Fixed Assets Plant and Equipment are brought to account at cost. The depreciable amount of all fixed assets are depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the Association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

15 JUNIOR COMPETITION REPORT Junior Cricket Secretary s Report Thanks must go to Hornsby Shire, Ku-ring-gai Shire and The Hills Shire councils for their support of Junior cricket, which after-all is their junior residents. I would also like to thank the Principals of Redfield College, Cherrybrook Public, Arcadia Public, Hornsby Heights Public, Pennant Hills High and Northholm Grammar. Please remember that these schools are doing us a favour so please respect their ways and requests and please keep the area clean. I would also like to thank the umpires for their hard work in the finals and especially the HK&HDCA Umpire s Secretary, Bruce Wood. A great effort all year. Nothing was ever too difficult. The work of our Divisional Secretaries, Joshua Miller, Richard Johnson, Jack Johnson, Tracey Johnson, Robert Gerometta, Jon Loveday, Morgan Loveday & Paul Hyam. Your efforts have been most appreciated was a big year for the batsmen with three HK&HDCA Batting Average records broken and one partnership record equalled this season. Congratulations to the following boys: Lachlan Ford (Normanhurst-Warrawee) 638 runs at average in U/16 s George Blackwood (Berowra) 329 runs at average in U/13 s Alex Dolly (Redfield College Red) 355 runs at average in U/11 s Anjan Oberai (149) / Alex Rashleigh (109*) 241 runs; 4 th wicket partnership WPHC Red v Upper Hills U/16 s Unfortunately, the time has come. Paul Hyam has decided to take a break from the Assistant Junior Organising role. For the last four years, Paul has been instrumental in initiating administrative changes to reduce workloads and create simplicity. Paul is a willing, enthusiastic, capable and very knowledgeable man who will be missed. Paul, my sincere gratitude and thanks for all your hard work throughout the years. I would like to thank all managers, coaches and parents for their part in making it all happen for their cricketers. Finally, to all the players, well played I'll see you all next year. 17 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT Senior Competition Secretary s Report The 2008/09 season was successful with 67 teams competing throughout the 10 grades. Congratulations are extended to ARL who won their fourth consecutive A Grade title after a hard fought win in the Final against a determined Kenthurst team. Other premiers were Kissing Point (Colts), WPH-C (A-Reserve Grade), Glenhaven (B Grade), Pymble (B-Reserve Grade), Ku-ring-gai Chase (C Grade), WPH-C (C-Reserve Grade) and Berowra who had a fantastic season culminating in winning the C3 Grade, D Grade and D-Reserve Grade competitions. It was pleasing to see Alf James as a member of the Berowra C3 team, who won the A.B.M James Cup on his birthday. A wonderful feat - congratulations Alf. Well done to all teams who competed throughout the respective competitions. The Twenty/20 handicap John Hayne Cup was again held for eight teams that missed the semi-finals. The Hornsby District C Grade team were successful in a close competition, with the Hornsby Districts A Grade being runners-up. Congratulations to the Hornsby District C Grade team and all other teams who participated. Reports were that everyone had a great time in this format of the game. The Club Championship was again won by the strong WPH-C club. Kenthurst finished in second position with Berowra finishing in third position. Next season, one of the recommendations going to all clubs is to revamp the Club Championship format as calculated in the MyCricket system. However, nothing should be taken away from the WPH-C club as they have dominated this prestigious award for several seasons now due to their excellent administration and playing talent. They develop their juniors and bring them through to the senior ranks very well. Congratulations are extended to the WPH-C Club. Sunday cricket for most grades was introduced this season, and generally appeared to work well from all reports. The 2009/10 season will see further promotion of Sunday cricket with the introduction of an 8-10 week one-day competition. A Twenty/20 competition will be held on alternate weekends, with the goal to attract new players to our game, offer another game for cricket tragics or even get old retired players back who are time-deprived to play regularly on Saturday afternoons. A President s Forum (Seniors) was held later in the season being well attended. The forum was an outstanding success with several recommendations to be presented to the clubs in the off-season. These recommendations will require constitutional and Senior rule changes. In closing I must thank a number of people who have devoted countless hours in making the season the success it was. Our thanks are extended to the Club Secretaries/Delegates, Executive Members, Executive Officer (Ben Gussey) and the incredibly hard-working members of the Afternoon Committee who represented the clubs so diligently. 19 Asquith Rugby League Takes it to Four! It would only be appropriate at this juncture to pay tribute to the remarkable achievement of Asquith Rugby League s (ARL) A Grade side. Their 28-run defeat of Kenthurst in this year s A Grade final extended their A Grade premiership winning streak to four; commencing in 2005/06. Despite ARL s fantastic streak, it would be naive to write off the depth and strength of the A Grade competition. This season Asquith Rugby League were in third place (on quotient) with just two rounds remaining but their experience shone through; winning five regular and post-season matches in a row to take the Minor Premiership and ultimately, once again, taste Grand Final success. It should also be noted that during this streak they have accounted for four different challengers in Berowra, Normanhurst, Castle Hill RSL and Kenthurst; further testament to how close the rest of the competition remains. Of particular interest to other sides is to note the continuity of the ARL player base. In four premiership wins they have used sixteen players, with ten players playing in at least three of the Grand Final victories. In contrast, WPH-C, who were defeated by ARL in the semi-final of 2005/06, had four final qualified players this season and Normanhurst (now Normanhurst-Warrawee), who were defeated in the Grand Final of that season, had only two. The figures look similar in the majority of sides in A Grade. I am certain there is a lesson for sides at any level that can be taken from this. The A Grade competition as a whole has seen a real youth rejuvenation and it will be interesting to see how clubs perform in the coming season as most have now had a couple of seasons to introduce the Colts generation to the top Grade. I am certain all sides are thankful to ARL for setting a fantastic benchmark to build towards. 20 REPRESENTATIVE COMPETITION REPORT Representative Secretary s Report Another representative season has come to a close with our most successful shield teams being the Creak Shield team advancing to a semi final and the Martin Shield team to a quarter final. The IDCA U/13 team won their competition and the President s Cup U/14 team were runners-up in their respective competitions. This has been my third and final season as Representative Secretary, and there are too many people to thank who have been of great assistance to me during this time. Our volunteers are acknowledged in the Honour Roll throughout this report, and I am greatly appreciative of their efforts. The HK&HDCA Executive have been very supportive over the years, and I particularly thank Steve Wilson for his co-operation with grounds so that Representative and Senior cricket could be accommodated, and Bruce Wood for his website assistance as well as the difficult role of organising umpires for Representative matches. A big thank you to all of the umpires who have stood at Representative matches, our Association should be proud of their high standard of officiating at our Representative games. It has been a demanding, interesting and enlightening role as Representative Secretary. When I commenced in the role my hope was that we could continue to provide opportunities to those players who wished to play cricket at a higher standard than they can get when playing club cricket, and still enjoy their cricket. Bear in mind, if a player is genuinely talented, their chances will come without being pushed at a young age. Finally, I must say a huge thank you to my dear wife Tracey, whose countless hours of selfless help and support have made it possible for me to take on this role, and to our three children for their patience and understanding. Emerging Blues The Emerging Blues program is a vital component of the CricketNSW talent identification process and an important link in the CricketNSW pathway. The Emerging Blues covers the age groups from Under 13 to Under 16. Players in each age group undertake a series of technical, mental and physical development sessions throughout the pre-season. The Emerging Blues program then concludes with matches in the early part of season. The Emerging Blues program acts a feeder to the NSW U/17 program. 23 IN PARTNERSHIP Northern Sydney Girls Cricket Association (NSGCA) The NSGCA began the 2008/2009 with new 20 over a side formats in both the hard-ball and soft-ball competitions. The shorter form of the game was generally well received throughout the season and will remain in place for next year. The soft-ball competition had teams from WPH-C, Manly, a combined team from Hornsby District/Gordon and a new team from West Ryde Rovers. WPH-C and West Ryde Rovers fought all year for the top spot and West Ryde Rovers were victorious in the end of year Final. The hard-ball competition saw teams from Castle Hill RSL, Gordon, Hornsby District, Manly and two teams from WPH-C. Castle Hill RSL dominated the regular season with nine wins, two no results, and only one loss. The semi-finals were interesting with fourth placed Hornsby District defeating Castle Hill RSL and third placed Gordon defeating WPH-C Red in a dominating performance. Gordon were victorious over Hornsby District in the final which was so close, either team could have won. Congratulations to our Premiers, Gordon and West Ryde Rovers. Also big congratulations to WPH-C who managed a dominant presence of three teams in the respective competitions. Thanks to all the girls who played this year, and also to all the coaches, managers, scorers and parents. Gerry Richards President Northern Sydney Girls Cricket Association Northern Districts Cricket Club (NDCC) Report The Club s overall performance in the men s five grades, Poidevin Grey and Green Shield resulted in our Club finishing tenth in the Club Championship, an improvement from thirteenth in the prior season. In addition the Club for the first time won the prestigious Sydney Cricket Association Spirit of Cricket award which is assessed by officiating umpires from all Club games held throughout the season. The guidelines define the exceptional performance that epitomized the game s true spirit, even ahead of team s fortunes as the criteria for assessment. Both of these achievements are as a result of every individual player who represents our Club and also the leadership displayed by all team captains. Team Success - One of the many highlights this season was the Men s First Grade s success in winning the inaugural Twenty/20 competition with the final played at the Sydney Cricket Ground under lights against Sydney Cricket Club. Our men s 2 nd and 4 th Grades both made the finals after successful seasons and while they lost in the qualifying final were extremely competitive and also well lead by captains Daniel Friedrich and Matthew Powell respectively. Our Women s First Grade also shared success in only their second season participating in the Sydney Cricket Association Women s Competition First Grade competition by winning games and also being extremely competitive in others. The Club is committed to establishing competitive and successful Women s teams and our progress is on track. We have extremely positive signs ahead with both our underage teams, the Men s Green Shield team and Women s Brewer Shield team, also making the finals. Many of today s current senior players had commenced

24 with the Club and progressed from Greenies and Brewer and we look forward to future success from this year s players. Underage performance is a key indicator for future success. Individual Achievements - Dominic Thornely became only the 9 th Northern District player to become captain of his State when he was named captain of New South Wales during the season. Dom captained the State in all three forms of cricket and was a member of the winning New South Wales Twenty/20 KFC competition team. Winner of the Sydney Cricket Association Women s Competition 1 st Grade Player of the Year Award was our Holly Colvin. Holly made an outstanding contribution to our women s team both on and off the field with 238 runs and 16 wickets and also passing her experience to our younger players as a current England Test and One Day International cricketer. While playing at our Club this season, Holly also represented England in the Women s World Cup which was played in Sydney and England won. Michael Hogan returned to the Club and his performance of 47 wickets at won him New South Wales 2 nd XI honors and also the Club s Player of the Season Award. Michael s achievement throughout the season has attracted interest from at least three States for him to pursue first class cricket and we are hopeful that the opportunities presented by New South Wales will be worthy to retain him. Outstanding individual achievements from HK&HDCA origin players include David Lowery s 1,036 run season at including his maiden 1 st Grade century, Luke Quinlivan 846 run season at and Wui-Kwan Wong s hat trick in 1 st Grade (3/9 v Eastern Suburbs). Special mention should be made of Clinton Witt s outstanding batting performance in the Twenty/20 Final at the Sydney Cricket Ground with 82* from only 57 balls, scoring 5x6 s and 8x4 s. Also during the season our 1 st Grade Scorer Robyn Sanday was the official Scorer for the Australia and South Africa 3 rd Test Match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Robyn continues to bring distinction to our Club through her continued representation at International level. Around the Club, notable achievements included David Ball achieving 5,000 runs, Chris Peebles and Matthew Bruce taking their 350 th wicket and Christian Webb his 300 th wicket. It should also be mentioned that NDCC extended sponsorship to the HK&HDCA by funding the cost of umpires for the Ross Turner Cup match and for the HK&HDCA s clash against a touring Wellington side. With the development of the Young Rangers academy and our ongoing support of the HK&HDCA we are bridging the gap between cricket development and higher honours. The Thorburn Family (Peter, Sandra, Chris, Mitchell, Luke) The Thorburn family have given wonderful volunteer service to HK&HDCA Representative cricket for many years including being Manager of their sons Representative teams; Representative Convenor for several age groups (U/13 s in ); Manager U/13 Ballina Tour in January 2009; Organiser of U/12 Glenn Hourigan Cup matches, and many other important behind the scenes jobs which have benefited HK&HDCA Representative cricket. Their sons, Chris, Mitchell & Luke, have also performed with distinction in HK&HDCA Representative teams over many years.

28 Chris was a leading all-rounder in his Shield team for at least six years and scored the only century in eleven years of U/15 Ross Turner Cup matches. Mitchell played an important role in HK&HDCA s U/15 Weblin Shield Premiership team in and won the annual HK&HDCA Kookaburra Sport Rising Star Award that same season. Luke was one of the leading batsmen in his Gee Shield Representative team in and has a very promising future ahead of him. Chris and Mitchell have also made valuable contributions off the field in roles such as HK&HDCA Representative selector; and assisting with coaching when required. They now play Grade Cricket for Northern District Cricket Club and are outstanding role models in the local cricket community. The success of HK&HDCA Representative cricket is dependent on hard-working volunteers who go about their duties without seeking recognition, and the Thorburn family are a great example of this. Council Cup Report Hornsby wins inter-council cricket match (Friday 13 February, 2009) Despite heavy rain and strong winds Hornsby Shire Council and Ku-ring-gai Council squared off at the inaugural inter-council cricket match at Montview Oval, Hornsby Heights last Friday. Hornsby battled through challenging conditions to win the match, which was played in the Twenty/20 format. Ku-ring-gai scored 9 for 115 in their innings, with one retirement at 30 runs. Hornsby finished its twenty Overs at 128, despite passing Ku-ring-gai s target with three overs remaining, three wickets down and two retirements. These are events which are important for building camaraderie between staff and between the councils, said Mayor Nick Berman, "The match was played in a very good spirit. It was good for Hornsby to chalk up a win after Ku-ring-gai's continued success on the soccer field. Ku-ring-gai Mayor Elaine Malicki congratulated Mayor Berman and his team on their victory. The win came despite a very valiant effort from our team, she said. The umpires said the weather conditions were among the worst experienced for a cricket match in recent memory, so it was a real challenge for both teams. The game continues the friendly sporting rivalry we are developing with Hornsby Council. Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association provided umpires for the game including the Association s Umpire Secretary Bruce Wood and President Mark Rushton who recently returned to umpiring after a suffering spinal injury and officiated this game in a wheel chair. 35 HKHDCUA REPORT Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Umpires Association (HKHDCUA) held its AGM on 14 July 2008, with special guest Merilyn Fowler, Director, NSWCUSA. John McQuillan and Bruce Wood were re-elected as President and Secretary. Barry McDonald and Mark Rushton were re-appointed as Patrons of HKHDCUA. Simon Moore, Barry McDonald & John McQuillan formed the HKHDCUA Umpires Training & Examination Committee. Bruce Wood continued in his role of appointing umpires to all A Grade, U/19 Colts and club Finals matches, as well as all Representative fixtures. A total of 255 umpiring appointments were made, comprising 179 club matches and 76 Representative matches. (Minimum of 3 club and/or rep. match appointments) - Alex Terry (29), Simon Moore (27), Bruce Wood (23), Steve Wilson (20), Stuart Wood (20), Geoff Hasler (18), Barry McDonald (18), Ian Paterson (15), John McQuillan (15), Tim Davidson (12), John Acheson (7), Scott Reid (5), Brad Cole (5), Tim Creamer (5), David Cooper (5), Nathan Wood (4), Peter Farr (4), John Ferguson (4), Alf James OAM (3), Mark Rushton (3). Bruce Wood and Alex Terry were appointed by the NSWDCA to umpire Junior Boys Finals, with Bruce controlling the U/16 Watson Shield Final, and Alex umpiring the U/10 Foster Shield Final. Bruce Wood was also appointed to umpire the U/15 Margaret Peden Shield Final between Blacktown & Camden. Geoff Hasler and Bruce Wood officiated in the annual HK&HDCA U/15 Ross Turner Cup match on 1 March Simon Moore and Steve Wilson umpired the U/12 Glenn Hourigan Cup match on the same date. Our senior panel of umpires was stretched further than ever before this season, with several weekends in November requiring between 16 and 18 umpire appointments, covering four A Grade, three Colts, and many Representative matches. Outside of the Representative season, we regularly appointed umpires to A-Reserve Grade matches. Our regular umpires comprised, Simon Moore, Steve Wilson, Geoff Hasler, Bruce Wood, Barry McDonald, Stuart Wood, Alex Terry, John McQuillan, Ian Paterson & Tim Davidson, and their on-going commitment to umpiring excellence in this district is much appreciated. This season we welcomed the services of umpire Tim Creamer from the Hawkesbury District. It was pleasing to see the courageous effort by Mark Rushton to return to active umpiring in his wheelchair for a couple of Colts matches in the New Year. The HK&HDCA Senior Competition switched to MyCricket in and all club umpiring appointments and match reports were administered using this database. Thanks to Brian Gibson for administering this website and Simon Moore for monitoring the submission of Reports. Bruce maintained relevant information on the HKHDCUA umpires website HKHDCUA introduced two Spirit of Cricket awards in , which were designed to promote and foster cricket being played in accordance with the spirit of the game. The Dave Gawler Memorial Shield (for Sportsmanship), was resurrected this season after not being awarded since The umpires officiating in senior matches rated each team on criteria which including respect for the opposition; respect for laws of the game; and respect for match officials. The winning team in was Hornsby District A Grade, captained by Tim Dudley. A second Spirit of Cricket award was introduced and was available to all HK&HDCA Representative teams. The inaugural winner was the U/19 Durham Shield team led by Steve Smith. Thanks to Bruce Wood, for his kind donation of the impressive new trophy. HKHDCUA also conducted a Captain's Ticket Course in September 2008 at the Montview clubhouse, which was attended by over 70 people. Thanks to Simon Moore for all his efforts in running this course. 36 HK&HDCA COUNCIL REPORTS Judiciary Report Following the relatively incident-free 2007/2008 season, it was rather disappointing to note the frequency with which the Judiciary had to convene. In the second half of the season there were nine people cited, with all but one found guilty. This was in sharp contrast to the previous season in which only two cases were reported. Listed below are the charges laid from just two meetings; Charge Suspension Abusive conduct Until end of season 2009/2010 Dissent 2 matches Abusive conduct 6 ½ matches Dissent 4 matches Dissent 5 matches It was fantastic to see umpires were more confident in reporting disciplinary matters, particularly player umpires who at times are not treated with the same respect as official umpires. It is vital that all umpires, whether official or not, are treated with due respect; particularly as a number of incidents occurred in matches where juniors were involved. It is important that older players are aware of their duty as role models on the field and that they conduct themselves accordingly. It was pleasing to note that two clubs took action against their own players in an effort to stem poor player behaviour. It is important that clubs continue to maintain a proper code of conduct. A sub-committee has been convened to review the judicial process within our Association. The constant convening of the judiciary, the length between reporting and charges being laid and the consistency of decisions will all be considered in a revamp of the judicial process. Finally, thank you very much to Bob Browne, Bob Dewstow, Martin Watts, Nathan Tilbury, David Lea and Martin Grosvenor who all assisted throughout the season. Publicity Report We had a significant increase in publicity this season and it is a primary goal of the Executive to increase the Association s profile in the coming seasons. In a first, we had very good support from Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai Local Community Radio Station, HHH, FM. Hornsby District Club President, Murray Macdonald had a regular piece during the Hornsby Mayor s Saturday morning show. Murray would go through the A Grade fixtures, providing tips, along with other Senior Competition information. It was also very helpful having the Mayor, Nick Berman playing for Hornsby District s A Grade this season. Towards the end of the season we also had another spot on HHH, on Thursday mornings at around 7.45am. They would go through results and upcoming fixtures for all grades. This provided excellent coverage and special focus during the Semi-finals and Finals. It is expected that both of these spots on HHH will continue regularly next season. The Hornsby Advocate was regularly following around the ARL A Grade team during the second half of the season covering their progress on their way to their fourth consecutive A Grade Premiership. There were also a couple of other local cricket stories published in The Advocate during the season including an interesting one on our own Mark Rushton returning to umpiring duties in a wheel chair. This dramatic increase in attention from the local paper was very welcome, although we often needed to be careful as the journalists would occasionally look for an angle to make the stories a little more tabloid. We will endeavour to keep this interest going with

37 the Hornsby Advocate next season and perhaps try to include the North Shore Times & local Hills newspaper as well. Whilst the Advocate did not always have space to publish our scores in their paper every week they did include them on their website ( which is how more & more people access their information. The Association has also recognised the need for a strong online presence and has worked hard in developing content (covered in the websites report). In addition, many Clubs also have very good websites, with West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook s site (wphccc.org) being particularly impressive. Other good Club websites include;hornsby District (hornsbycricket.asn.au), Berowra (berowracricket.org), Normanhurst-Warrawee (normosports.com) & St Ives (stivescricket.com). Publicity is very important for the development of cricket in the local community and as such we have allocated funds for the promotion of our local clubs leading into the 2009/10 season. We will work together with Clubs to assist them in maximising their publicity efforts in the coming season and beyond. Website Report Brian Gibson, Paul Hyam, Bruce Kimberley and Bruce Wood all did a terrific job in maintaining the respective Senior, Junior (cricketnsw.com.au/hkhdca/), Representative and Umpire websites (cricketnsw.com.au/hkhcua/) over the course of the season. Brian Gibson also helped to initiate the move to mycricket for the Senior Competition (hkhdca.com.au) and we will now see the other aforementioned websites join suit. Here is a note about the system from Brian; Season introduced mycricket, Cricket Australia s national cricket management program, an online statistics and administration solution. The system gave our clubs and association the opportunity to manage their players, competitions, statistics and their own websites. In essence, it meant the introduction of a new system of entering results and scorecards and better visibility to all members of our cricket community. After having used the system for a few seasons to maintain statistics at club level I recommended to HK&HDCA and CricketNSW that we implement the system as part of a pilot group for CricketNSW. The system was adopted by the Association, its umpires and club administrators. To enable a smooth transition from isport, the CricketNSW solution, to MyCricket, I held a training night for club administrators and captains to show them the capabilities of the solution and to instruct them on the tasks required. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone that used the system as there was great commitment to this new, unfamiliar process. My recommendations for season would surround the need to migrate more of the Association s offline processes over to mycricket, such as Draw Generation, Fixture Management and Online Player Registrations; to establish our website as a valuable means of communication between the Association and its players; and to tighten the current controls we implemented last season. 38 Grounds Report The season ran almost incident-free in terms of ground hire, usage and conditions, with the unfortunate postnote being the loss of a turf ground for the grand final. With the introduction of the paid Executive Officer role, there has been an opportunity to build an even stronger relationship between the Association and Local Councils. This involved bookings, a number of ground inspections and quick turnover in dealing with ground issues. In terms of ground issues, some pitches have already or are close to reaching their age limit and will need to be replaced over the next couple of seasons. With economic downturn it is not always possible to replace pitches at first sign of wear but we will continue to monitor all grounds and ensure that player safety is maintained. It should be noted that ground inspections have taken place at all grounds that the majority of grounds this season. Problem areas were also reported and fixed quickly thanks partly to our new ground reporting system on mycricket that has allowed for issues to be easily communicated and submitted to the Association. Special mention should be made of the current or ongoing development of the following facilities; Galston Rec Reserve, Edward Bennett Park, Auluba Reserve, James Park and Montview East. All have or are about to receive development and will continue to be an asset to our Association going forward. We must thank Bruce Wood and Barker College for allowing the use of their fantastic facilities. We certainly hope to continue this relationship in to the future. Building partnerships with local schools will be vital in providing a sustainable competition. Steve Wilson has also passed on this note regarding grounds; our sincere thanks are extended to the 3 councils and their hard-working staff: Hornsby Shire, Ku-ring-gai Shire and The Hills Shire, for their often thankless roles in ensuring our grounds were maintained and prepared for most matches. I must thank Gilroy College and the Northholm Grammar School for their support in allowing us use of their facilities. The condition and over-all safety of our playing grounds will continue to be one of our top priorities next season. Feedback from captains on all grounds after each match will be vital. After lengthy behind-the-scenes work, covers were purchased or made available at all 6 turf grounds. Five of the covers are brand new, with a kind donation by Northern District Cricket Club of a second-hand light-weight cover at The Glade. New trolleys are at all grounds excepting The Glade. 39 OBITUARY (MR. JOHN HOPKINS) We record with regret the death of John Hopkins, a Life Member of the Association who has died at the early age of 56 from complications caused by diabetes. Cricket was the most enduring feature of John s life and he loved playing the game. He was a very good player from an early age. He played his junior cricket for the Berowra Club. For the Under 10 team in 1962/63, he scored 178 runs and took 70 wickets. For the next two seasons he played in the Under 12 team and took as many as 116 wickets. In 1965, aged only 12, he turned out for Berowra C Grade in the men s competition, playing alongside his father, John senior. Three years later he was a member of the Association s Under 16 or Watson Shield team which played in B Grade (then the second-highest grade) under the name of Perseverance. Our Patron, Tom Richmond ran the team and all remember John as a very happy-go-lucky boy. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he played A Grade cricket and became a much tougher opponent. He usually opened the innings and scored thousands of runs against the best bowlers in the district. He played A Grade cricket for Mt Colah, for Kissing Point, for Berowra, and for Asquith Rugby League. He won about 12 premiership caps in his career. When he was about 30 John suffered two major health problems which dogged him for the rest of his life. Firstly, he had to have a hip replacement which left him with a permanent limp and then he was diagnosed with Type I or Juvenile Diabetes. This meant that he had to inject himself with insulin three times a day for the past 25 years. For 40 years John represented the Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Association in dozens of matches from Foster Shield to Over 40s. Without doubt the innings which gave him most pleasure was the 55 he scored for Kissing Point against the all-conquering Mt Colah side in the A Grade final in It won the match for his team. John did a lot of work for the Cricket Association off the field. He was a member of its Executive Committee for 17 years and he was Vice-President for 10 years. He always volunteered to do a job if no one else would. He managed and coached many Senior and Kunior teams, including the Green Shield for the Northern District Cricket Club. He acted as Association Secretary for one year and compered many Presentation Nights and trivia and fund-raising events. For his efforts he was made a Life Member of the Association in John will be remembered by his friends as a proud and confident man, a man who considered others and a man of great courage in the face of his physical afflictions Alfred James OAM Life Member

Victorian Bushfire Appeal As a not for profit community organisation the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills Cricket Association have always, and continue to be, acutely aware of their social responsibilities. Just as so many in the community have contributed their time, money and resources to allow the Association to grow, the Association too must contribute back to the community, particularly in times of need. Never is community more important than in times of suffering and never has our nation become more of a community than when we watched with horror as the bushfires tore through the Victorian landscape. Commencing on February 7 th, over four hundred bushfires were recorded in a period of just over a month. During that period 173 people died, around 500 were injured and thousands of homes lost or damaged. Perhaps most saddening was to learn that so many fires were of human cause, many lit deliberately. The Australian community was galvanised and responded with great purpose and generosity. I know first-hand that so many people within our own Cricket Association donated generously and without hesitation or recognition. Both the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook and St Ives Cricket Clubs supported the cause by organising their own gold coin donation efforts and both clubs should be commended for their generosity.

41 With so many monetary donations being provided by Australians we decided that our Association would be better placed to provide alternative assistance. Through donations from member clubs and internal fundraising efforts, we raised over $2600. A special word of thanks must also be passed on to Integrity Consultants, who donated $500. After contacting Cricket Victoria, we were able to contact the Yarra Valley Cricket Association which led directly to clubs that had their facilities and cricket gear destroyed by the fires. With the help and generosity of the Greg Chappell Cricket Centre, we were able to donate hundreds of items in aim to revitalise cricket programs in the region. We sincerely hope that this gesture may provide some happiness and joy to the members of these devastated communities as they look to rebuild their lives. Blind Cricket Ashes Series Commencing on December 3 rd, the old enemy hit our shores to take on Australia in the blind Ashes series. The tour lasted fifteen days and consisted of five one-dayers and a Twenty20 match. Two matches were held locally, with the first and third one-dayers played at Waitara Oval and Barker College respectively. Unfortunately England took both matches in our backyard and ultimately won the best of 5 series 3-0. The series also consisted of a rained off match and the final match, a dead rubber, turned in to a thrilling tie with both teams scoring 331 from the allotted overs. As a strong believer in promoting and encouraging the game of cricket in all its forms, the Association was a proud sponsor of this historic event, contributing $500 to the cause. It was pleasing to see local councils, NDCC, CricketNSW and Cricket Australia jump on board, with Richie Benaud OBE acting as Patron. For those that note the high scoring nature of the tie, a quick summary of the game is listed below How is the Blind cricket match played? The game of Blind Cricket played at international level is a fast, high scoring, attacking game with scores over 300 in a 40 over game very common. All players must be able to score at least a run a ball, bowl a good line and field the ball as it flies to all parts of the ground. Being an all -rounder is an essential ingredient when playing for Australia. Due to the varying eye sight conditions, there are three categories of players, with B3 having vision of 6/60 or field of less than 10 degrees, B2 vision of 2/60 or field of less than 5 degrees, and B1 no vision at all. B1 players receive two runs for every run they score. A team must have a minimum of four B1 players. The bowling has to be underarm and the international ball to be used in this series is made of a hard white plastic and is a similar size to a regular cricket ball with ball bearings in it so sound can be released. The series includes 5 one day matches, with the overall winner being the best of five matches. The rules of the match have been approved by Cricket Australia and the World Blind Cricket Council. 51 Historical Feature Alan Mitchell Retires! Alan Mitchell, Life Member of the Association, has announced his retirement from competitive cricket at the age of 80. His last match was for Kenthurst Masters against Burwood on 7 December So ends a most remarkable career in the Association. On moving to Berowra, Alan played for Berowra and Wahroonga Clubs from 1987/88 to 1997/88, that is, from the ages of 59 to 70. That is remarkable enough in itself but during that time he took no fewer than 401 wickets at an average of and also scored three centuries. For the past 16 seasons he has also played nearly 150 Masters (Over 40) matches for the Association and Kenthurst and taken around 200 wickets in them. The highlight undoubtedly came in the Masters match between Kenthurst and Hornsby in 2001/02 (part of the celebrations for the Association s 75 th anniversary) when he dominated the match by taking 7 wickets for 41 runs and hitting 32 not out. Opponents will recall Alan s bowling style. As captain he usually came on first change. He would hand the umpire his floppy white hat, replace it with his club cap (to protect his bald pate) and measure out his run of one pace! He bowled off-breaks (with many variations) from over the wicket. His length and direction was so good that opponents became frustrated at the lack of bad balls and took risks against good ones, regularly resulting in catches in the outfield, stumpings and a high number of caught-and-bowleds. He always fielded at mid-off or mid-on and, as a batsman, his most prolific scoring strokes were the square cut and a clout over mid-on. Alan grew up in the Hornsby district and in his last year at Hornsby Primary School he hit five centuries. In 1945/46, aged 16, he played Third Grade for Northern District C.C. and topped the batting averages with 375 runs at an average of with a top score of 99. He didn t take any wickets because he was the wicketkeeper! His captain was Errol Branz, the leading batsman in the Association before the War. In the following season he played many matches in Second Grade. For the next number of years Alan worked as a cane-cutter up the north coast and tells exciting stories of that hard life. On his return to Sydney he operated the newsagency at Taylor s Square at Darlinghurst. Older members will recall that the first delivery of the morning newspapers was made to this location at midnight each day. Hundreds of school-leavers would congregate there to get their Leaving Certificate results in mid- January but Alan s regular customers on his midnight to dawn shift were politicians, businessmen and colourful Sydney identities. His stories about the characters he met are most entertaining. When the position of Secretary of the Association became vacant in 1990, Alan offered himself for nomination and held the post for nine seasons. He was also Publicity Officer for six years during that time. He carried out his duties in a most efficient manner. He umpired in many final and representative matches and in 2000 he was elected as a Life Member. One can t mention Alan without thinking of his wife, Doris. The two are inseparable. Doris was the scorer for almost every match in which Alan played and won the Lyla Ray Trophy for the best-kept scorebook for eight consecutive years from 1990/91. A most gracious lady, she was the Assistant Secretary (Records Officer) of the Association from 1994/95 to 1998/99. Alan and Doris are now living on the Central Coast. It is rumoured that Alan intends to take up lawn-bowling. If he does, it is a fair bet that he ll soon be acquiring more silverware for the mantelpiece. Alf James OAM HK&HDCA Life Member

52 A Closing Word (on behalf of the Life Members) A Life Member s View a personal perspective There is an argument that an organisation is at its most vulnerable when it is strong. The logic is that the reasons for success can be taken for granted and the organisation can lose focus on the need to constantly anticipate and adapt to change. Our Association has a successful pathway for children with in2cricket / Kanga programmes in place, Junior Clubs continuing to provide an opportunity for children to play in a very well administered competition and a good Senior Competition with the visionary Colts division now gaining momentum. Added to this, the developing relationship with our Grade Club Northern District, only strengthens this pathway. On the basis of these foundations we could be forgiven for holding a steady course. Such an approach is also one of our sleeper risks. A similar pathway to the boys exists for the Girls. We are the only area in NSW with its own Girls Association the North Sydney Girl s Cricket Association. With in2cricket, CricHit and Junior competitions in place, a pathway to Northern District Cricket Club and more senior Representative levels beyond Grade, we are well placed. The danger with all this is for us to become collectively complacent and either do nothing or react once change is underway. My own Club (WPH-C), identified some years ago that demographic change is well underway. Between for example, ABS Census data shows that the population of children aged between 0 and 16 years for the local postcode areas had fallen by 740 children with the biggest drop in the age group 12 and under. Despite this we have been successful in growing Junior numbers through innovative marketing and junior development initiatives. If we had done nothing different, participation levels would be far lower. At Association level, this demographic trend may already be happening amongst many of our member Clubs given that the Shire is no longer a 1 st home owners area and families are ageing removing a source of our organic growth. Perhaps a solution is for Clubs to work more closely together to share best practice ideas. As we are not in competition with each other, shared success is a good result. There is also growing competition for the time of our Generation Y and Generation next children for activities that require limited concentration and get a quick result. While there should always be a prime position for the traditional forms of the game (50/60 over games played over two weekends), this game structure will become increasingly difficult to sell not just to the children but also to the many younger parents who don t want to endure the longer form of the game on a weekend. Initiatives like Twenty/20 competitions, coloured clothing and perhaps even games played mid-week after school hours are already happening, to an extent, but may well have a higher priority on our planning boards. Extreme heat conditions are also another factor that Associations (to CNSW level) need to address through policy decisions that gives firm direction. Over last year I heard too many comments from parents from various Clubs on Saturday mornings about the unpleasantness of the few extreme heat days, not just for the discomfort of the children but their own discomfort. Unfortunately, guidelines will often be ignored where competitive advantage is involved. A personal view is that to do nothing will see this issue build its own momentum over time with parents voting at registration time. The saying, listen to the whispers to avoid the screams has a lot of currency with this matter. For all of our Clubs, including the NSGCA, the ability to get volunteers who are prepared to contribute rather than Club members who see this as someone else s job, is an ongoing threat. Some Clubs do this better than others but no one does it consistently well. There is an opportunity to turn this threat into an opportunity.

53 In summary, there is a lot that our Association has to be proud of not the least a Team of administrators who are high quality. However, if we think for a moment on what our Clubs and the Association will, or should be like in 10 or 20 years year s time and what needs to happen to get it to that stage, then this may help to shape our priorities. This reminds me of an observation our good friend Tom Richmond made to me that the responsibility for driving the preservation and development of our great game rests with all of us who enjoy or have enjoyed the game.
