Thank you to the P&C members who assisted with the barbecue and welcome for our new Year 7 parents and students. Also thank you to Catie Butler, Maddie Gagel and Tiana Felizzi from our student executive who also assisted with the barbecue. Footwear Footwear was an item of discussion at our recent P& &C meeting. It is important that students wear footwear thatt is sturdy enough to provide support and protection for their feet throughout the day. It is a WHS requirement, in certain areas of the school. that the type of footwear worn meets quite specific requirements. In accordance with the Safe Working Policy, the Department has identified areas of its workplaces where appropriate footwear must be worn by staff, students and visitors to ensure their safety. Areas where enclosed leather footwear (or other material confirmed by the manufacturer to be suitable, refer to Australian/NZ Standard 2210: Safety Protective and Occupational Footwear) is required are: Industrial Arts and trades workshop areas Science laboratories Canteenn or Food Technology (Kitchen) areas The staff and studentss of Karabar High School and Distance Education Centre acknowledgee the traditional owners of the land where we work as the first people of this country. We are working together to educate Australia s future. Sandals, open footwear or high heeled shoes are not permitted in these areas. If students present for a class or activity with inappropriate footwear the student should be offered alternative educational activities until they are wearing appropriate footwear. A full copy of these guidelines is attached to the end of this newsletter. Your assistance in supporting your students to wear the correct footwear to school is greatly appreciated. It is wonderful to see many Year 7 students using the library facilities, borrowing books and other resources, enjoying board games on games days and working on homework. Throughout the library lessons, students are encouraged to join the Premier s Reading Challenge which provides a great opportunity for students to improve their reading skills and to work to the goal of gaining a state wide reading certificate. We have some new displays in the library to celebrate new books, International Women s Day and the start of Autumn. Happy Reading Catherine Rosenberg YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED We had a visit from the parking officers for our area. They have received complaints about how close to T-intersections some of our P-plate drivers are parking. They are asking that all drivers park according to the rules. Attached to this newsletter is an outline of the rules for parking. These come from the following document / I would like to thank the officers for givingg us the opportunity to help remind people of the rules. Page 2

4 SUMMER OF SUCCESS FOR KARABAR HIGH SCHOOL CRICKETERS Although the summer of cricket is fast drawing to a close, the action has been heating up for a number of KHS Cricketers. Season has been a highly successful one for the school, with some outstanding team success and individual achievements. On Wednesday March 6, the 2012 South Coast Champion Davidson Shield Cricket Team travelled to Jannali Oval in Sydney to take on Kirrawee High School in the NSW CHS Quarter-Final. Kirrawee had not only won the Sydney East Section of the competition but had also defeated Sydney South-West Champions Camden High to earn their spot in this match, so the Karabar boys knew they were in for a tough match. The day started well with Mark Solway correctly calling heads and electing to bat first. As they have managed to do throughout the competition, Wilson Morshead (8 off 29 balls) and Shaun Franks (22 off 43) gave Karabar a good foundation at the top of the order. Although scoring proved difficult, the openers fulfilled their brief of seeing out the opening 10 overs and taking the shine off the ball for the middle order. The middle order continued to make gradual progress leading up to drinks, with Alex Page (13 off 20) and Mark slowly building the total to 52. However, the step up in class for this match was telling in the period either side of the 20-over interval, when Karabar lost 5 wickets for the loss of only 16 runs, including leading run-scorer Jay Ludwig. Throughout this period, captain Solway tried his best to hold the innings together, showing tremendous patience in compiling 12 runs in 70 balls. William Graham (12 off 25) did his best to lead a lower order fight back, but Karabar was eventually dismissed for 85 in the 38 th over. Despite the small total, the KHS XII refused to give up hope, particularly as bowling had been their strength throughout the competition. The first 17 overs of the Kirrawee innings were just as tight as Karabar s, with the Sydney boys slightly behind the comparison score up to that point. William Graham (1/12 off 5) led the way in restricting the scoring, with Jay (0-13 off 5), Mark (1/23 off 5), Alex (0/14 off 3), George Cross (1/18 off 3) and Sam Adams (0/4 off 2) all causing the batsmen trouble. Unfortunately, Kirrawee then hit the accelerator leading into and after drinks, and passed Karabar s score in the 23 rd over, winning by 6 wickets. Even though they were defeated, the Karabar boys are still to be congratulated on their outstanding success in this competition. They have made history by being the first Open Boys side from the school to be Regional Champions. Even more impressive than their cricketing skills has been their sportsmanship throughout the competition and especially in Wednesday s Quarter Final. Kirrawee s coach even took the time to myself and Mr Kells congratulating the boys on their outstanding conduct throughout the match and their graciousness in defeat. A massive thank you must be given to Mr Bradley Page for his assistance throughout the competition in transporting the boys to and from away games (5 out of 7 games were away), including Wednesday s quarter-final! Also a thank you to the other parents who assisted with transport and had their sons at school at the crack of dawn on several occasions! The cricket continues for most of the squad, with their defence of the South Coast Trophy beginning next Monday against Yass HS at Freebody Oval. The cricket also continues for Mark Solway! As reported in previous newsletters, Mark was part of the victorious South Coast CHS Cricket Team at the recent State Carnival in Penrith. Mark was an integral part of the team, not only with his wily off-spin bowling and middle- Page 4
5 order batting, but also as the team s Vice-Captain. His personal achievements in the tournament included 5 for 27 against Sydney South West and a match-winning knock of 28 not out in the final, including hitting the winning runs. To top off the magnificent achievement of being part of the first South Coast team to win the CHS Championship, Mark s performances throughout the week resulted in his selection in the NSW Second XI team to play against the Combined Catholic and Private School sides next week in Sydney. In addition, Mark has been selected from the combined CHS XIs for a tour to England in July. This is a magnificent opportunity for Mark and we congratulate him again on this wonderful achievement.
