1 15/08/ 2014 Term 3, Week 5 KARABAR High School and Distance Education Centre Donald Road, Queanbeyan NSW 2620 High School Distance Education Phone: Phone: Facsimile: Facsimile: karabar h.school@det.nsw.edu.au karabar d.school@det.nsw.edu.au Dates to Remember... August August 19 August 20 August 26 Principal s Report Yr 11 Group 3 Work Placement Social pm Bstreetsmart Excursion to Homebush 5.30am-6pm P&C Meeting 7.00pm Christmas came early this week with the combined high schools hospitality classes Christmas in July August function. The Bicentennial Hall looked great with the decorations and the students were amazing in their service and attention to detail. The food was very enjoyable and everyone involved should be very proud. A special thank you to Ms Spring who was the main organiser from our school. Next Tuesday is our next social. Please remember that no tickets will be sold on the night so students need to purchase their tickets at recess and lunchtime before hand. The socials are a great time for all students and I encourage all of them to attend. This week saw the passing of another member of our community, Malcolm Bowerman. Malcolm was our Agriculture Assistant for many years and he also did a great deal of work with our gardens around our Distance Education rooms. He was a very sociable person who always had time to have a chat. We will remember him fondly and our thoughts are with his family at this time. The raffle that the SRC in conjunction with the P&C are holding is a great opportunity for the students to win some great prizes. Please support our school community and have your child buy a ticket or more from the SRC at recess and lunchtime or from our front office. The staff and students of Karabar High School and Distance Education Centre acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where we work as the first people of this country. We are working together to educate Australia s future. Colin Devitt Relieving Principal Page 1

2 BSTREETSMART FOR YEAR 10 STUDENTS Year 10 students are encouraged to attend the 2014 bstreetsmart event Wednesday 20 th August at the Allphones Arena, Homebush. Why your child should attend bstreetsmart? Bstreetsmart integrates perfectly with the NSW Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) syllabus for road safety. The program consists of a dramatic live crash reenactment that includes Police, Ambulance Service of NSW and Fire and Rescue. Interactive displays and crash survivor speakers bring home the road safety message with passion and clarity. The forum is run by the Westmead Hospital Trauma Service with the specific purpose of educating our youth and reducing road fatalities and injuries in this high risk group. Bstreetsmart was a finalist in the 2013 Western Sydney Local Health District Quality Awards. The program was also a finalist in the NSW Premiers awards in Student comment: Inspirational speakers who presented a harrowing tale which made me very determined to be a safe driver-not only for myself-but for the others on the road. I never want to be the person at fault for causing someone else s death or permanent injury. Student notes are in the PDHPE staffroom for collection and must be returned to the front office signed and paid for by Monday 18 th August. Nyasa Wells (Head Teacher PDHPE) SCIENCE WEEK Check the website above for events in and around Canberra during National Science Week which runs from the August. There are many awesome events, activities and competitions for you to engage in. For example, THE SCIENCE OF ELECTRICITY, LIGHT, AND THE FUTURE on the 16 August and DOUBLE DECKER SCIENCE on the 22 and 23 at Questacon look like great fun. There will be some Science based quiz questions for students to get involved in, so pay attention during period 1 Monday as you will have an opportunity to win some prizes. This year s theme is Food for our future: Science feeding the world. Mr Alasdair Sides Head Teacher Science Page 2

3 REWIND One hundred and thirty students represented Karabar High School in performances at the Canberra Theatre as part of Rewind; the Queanbeyan Schools Arts Showcase. Karabar students were in the Orchestra, Combined Schools Choir, Senior Dance Ensemble, our Whole School Item Good Morning Vietnam and our Performing Arts Classes item Let Me Entertain You an examination of the history of entertainment. Entertainment Industry students and others were part of the team that staged the event working technically with projections or as part of operations. What a great job everyone did representing our school, learning and experiencing in the theatre and performing and sharing their story with the audience. If students would like to have a DVD of the event please order through the front office; $25.00 a copy. Page 3

7 KARABAR GIRLS NETBALL On Wednesday the 6 th August, Karabar approached the Wollongong Netball Centre with a fierce intensity in their eyes. The first obstacle that stood in their way of success was Dapto Sports High. As the starting seven took the court, with full intention of victory, we knew the battle had begun. As the first quarter progressed, we gained a substantial lead with Alana and Andrea in circle defence, forcing Dapto s retreat. We gained a 12 goal lead with shooters Taz, Kelly and Georgia holding 99.99% accuracy. Centre court players including Karina, Emily, Courtney and Megan consistently broke centres, gathered intel and created many turnovers. We knew the game was ours. The second game drew us facing Bega. Goal for goal throughout the game, we knew we had met our match. Coming up to the end of the game, the lead had not been established by either team. Extra time had been called with an intense 10 minutes. With the loss of one goal, Karabar retreated from the courts with next year on their minds. The Karabar High Open Netball Team consisted of Georgia Reed, Karina Hopkins, Megan Quinnell, Andrea Thompson, Emily Hopkins, Alana Bowyer, Kelly White, Courtney Hopkins and Tahlia Christopherson. We would like to thank Mrs Salvestrin and Ms Tucker for their support, amazing coaching, knowledge and encouragement throughout the competition. The Under 15 s also competed at the Wollongong Netball Centre on the 6 th, defeating Dapto Sports High in their first game. In the second game against Nowra High the first half was tight, with both teams starting strong. Karabar then knew that they would have to put in their all for the next 20 minutes. With a lead to Nowra, the Under 15 s came back, winning the last half and narrowing down the oppositions lead to 5 goals, but unfortunately losing the game. The team consisted of Georgia Lavers, Laura Davies, Alison Quinnell, Tahleah Herekuiha, Jasmin Newman, Gabby Mackley, Tiarhna Newham, Please congratulate the girls on their awesome performance.
