November 4 8 Year 7-10 examinations Principal s Report Technology and the finalisation of the Digital Education Revolution [DER] Program Students, parents and community members need to be aware that the DER Program, which has provided laptop computers to Year 9 students for the past four years, concludes at the end of this year. The Technical Support Officer position that was introduced to support this program has been extended for a further six months. We are happy thatt Mr Wayling will be able to continue in this role, at least for the first half of We also hope that further discussions will see a further extension of this support for school. The end of the DER Program means thatt our Year 9 students will not receivee a laptop computer in We are currently looking at how we, as a school, will facilitate and support a Bring Your Own Device [BYOD] policy and program for our studentss in 2014 and beyond. This is a discussion that our whole school community (students, staff and parents) needs to engage in to ensure we facilitate the best possible policy and outcome for our students. What is BYOD? BYOD is a program whereby students will be able to bring a personal device to school to use as their primary technological device. The school can provide the ability to connect compatible devices to a filtered internet service. How will it work? We have recently commenced discussions on this important question. Students will be able to bring a device of their own that meets the specifications required to access the existing DER network at school. Students bringing devices will be required to sign a User Agreement that sets out how the devicee can be used at school. We are currently examining options to recommend a preferred device for students; and working to source a supplier who will provide a competitive price to families who purchase the recommended device. Who pays? These devices will be purchased by and remain the property of the family. The school does not manage, support, own or warranty the device - it's your device. What will be provided by the school? Access, through our existing DER network, to provide internet access for the preferred device. The staff and studentss of Karabar High School and Distance Education Centre acknowledgee the traditional owners of the land where we work as the first people of this country. We are working together to educate Australia s future. Page 1

The school network is dual band wireless network. For devices to connect to this they must have the following specifications: The NSW Department of Education and Communities [DEC] wireless network installed in high schoolss only operates on the n 5Ghz standard. Devices with a/b/g or n 2.4Ghz only will not be able to connect. The NSW DEC is negotiating deal to enable students to have access Microsoft 365 for free download Adobe Creative Cloud. We are also looking at the level of basic trouble shooting support that we will be able to provide at school. What about device security? The school will not be responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices. Digital citizenship We are the first generation of parents responsible for equipping our children with digital citizenship skillss how to use technology safely and responsibly, and how to evaluate, manage and use the information and tools they find online. Here are some tips to get you started: // to young people aged Design competition The design competition for NSW Youth Week 2014 is open years. 4 COMMUNITY AND FAMILY STUDIES NEWS INDEPENDENT RESEARCH PROJECT Our HSC CAFS students have begun their major project this term. It involves researching a variety of issues thatt come under the topic headings: Individuals, Families, Communities, Groups and Resource Management. Each student has created a research question or hypothesis that their project will be based around. For the research to be valid and accurate they may require input from students at the school, and as such our students may ask them to participate in questionnaires and surveys related to their topic. Ethical and privacy strategies have been put in place and it is not compulsory that students undertake this research request, as it is completely voluntary. We thank you in advance for your co-operation. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at school on Miss Megan Tucker (CAFS Teacher) YEAR 11 NEWS The start of Term Four also meant the beginning of the HSC course for our Year 11 students. With the HSC Examination Period about to enter its final week, now is the time for these students to focus on the twelve months ahead and ensure that they are giving themselves every opportunity for success. UC STUDY DAY On Friday of Week One, 63 students from Year 11 visited the University of Canberra for a Study Day. The students were able to participate in some activities that gave them an indication of what the life of a University student is like as well as completing sessions on Study Skills and Career Pathways. Many students found the day useful in givingg them more information about their post- schooling options. A big thank you to Ms D ambrosio for her organisation of the day! Page 4

HSC RULES AND PROCEDURES Students were this week issued with HSC Rules and Procedures Booklets from the Board of Studies. Any students who have not received their booklets should see Mr Duhigg as soon as possible. In addition, students will need to access their DET address in the coming weeks as they willl receive their Students Online access details. Students Online is the central information hub for HSC studentss and will provide access to their results. Page 5

STUDY ROUTINES Although the HSC examination period seems a long way away, it will come around quickly. Establishing a consistent and regular pattern of study early is essential as it will provide students with a more thorough understanding of the content and concepts covered in their subjects. The most commonly recommended suggestion is that students complete 2-3 hours of study per subject, per week. Karabar Newsletter As part of their work in HSC Prep classes, students have been shown how to develop a study plan that accounts for their school work, other commitments (i.e. sport, part-time work etc.) and their social life. To provide further support, Year 11 students will be issued with an HSC diary in the coming weeks that will provide space for them to plan their study and give them essential information about the HSC. TIPS FOR STUDYING While each individual student will find different study methods work best for them, there are some general tips that all students should consider: Find a clear, flat surface on which to work Remove any potential distractions (Turn off your phone!) When completing practise exam responses, try to create the conditions of the exam no noise, clear surface, clock timer on. Music can be useful for some people when studying, but it should be at a low volume (preferably played through speakers rather than earphones). Instrumental music is also recommended that way you won t feel tempted to sing along! Plan each study session so that you include breaks and stick to the schedule you create! Develop a system for organising your notes SEAL (Structured Explicit Analytical Learning) tables are one way of doing this (see the information below). It is recommended that students talk to their teachers about what they should focus on in each individual subject for studying. In order to support students in studying for English, all students in the English (Standard) and English (Advanced) courses have been provided with a study booklet for the Area of Study Belonging. This booklet provides three weekly activities for students to complete to support their study of the concept of Belonging in class. STUDY SESSIONS AT KARABAR Students are able to make use of the Homework Centre as a designated study session. The Homework Centre runs from 3:15PM-4:15PM every Tuesday afternoon in the Library. In addition, students are no longer required to attend sport on Thursday afternoons (1:00PM- 3:00PM). They are able to use the library during this time for study. In addition, Room 6 is also available for group study sessions. Page 6

The following websites are recommended for Parents and Students for more information about the HSC: - This is an excellent resource put together by Charles Sturt University. It includes online study guides for a wide range of subjects as well as general study tips and examination preparation techniques. Karabar Newsletter - The School A-Z website provides lots of advice to parents about how you can assist your child. This section of the website has a particular focus on the HSC, with advice for parents about what they can do to create a supportive home environment. As always, if there is anything we can do to assist you or your child, please don t hesitate to contact Mr Duhigg. KARABAR HIGH SCHOOL FALLS SHORT AGAINST CROOKWELL Karabar High School s Open Boys Cricket Team suffered a narrow loss to Crookwell High School in Round 2 of the 2013 Davidson Shield Competition, which was played at Queanbeyan Town Park on Monday of Week 2. The 9-run defeat means that the defence of the school s 2012 South Coast Title is over. The team were asked to field first after the Crookwell skipper correctly called heads. This was an unusual situation for the boys, after batting first in all but one of their past eight matches, but they all felt up for the challenge. The bowling attack was lead well by Will Graham and George Cross, who both picked up early wickets. They were well supported throughout the Crookwell innings by skipper Alex Page, Jay Ludwig, Finley Hollyhead, Taha Aamir and Rohan Ashton, who all made run-scoring difficult for the Crookwell batsmen on a slow wicket. Aside from a reasonable partnership for the 3 rd wicket, the batsmen could never quite get on top of the Karabar leatherflingers and Crookwell completed their 40 overs with a modest total of 9/116. A special mention goes to Matt Bradley for his direct-hit run out from side-on that dismissed Crookwell s top scorer. The Karabar run-chase began well, with Will and George showing patience on a wicket that continued to prove difficult to score off. Despite this, the top order built a solid foundation for the run chase and shortly before drinks, Karabar was cruising at 3/46, with Page and Ludwig looking very comfortable at the crease. Then came the first twist in what was to be a see-sawing battle. An outstanding spell of off-spin bowling from the Crookwell captain placed enormous pressure on the Karabar batsmen, triggering a middle order collapse that left the home side reeling at 7/54. Suddenly, the game was firmly in Crookwell s favour with Karabar s last remaining recognised batsmen, Wilson Morshead and Yusuf Parker, at the crease. Page 7

ltt Between them, these two young gentlemenn began the arduous task of trying to regain control over the innings. They showed outstanding maturity to firstly absorb the pressure being applied by the Crookwell captain, refusing to give away their wicket in his remaining overs. Once his spell was over, Wilson took a more aggressive approach and Yusuf also began to play some shots. All of a sudden, the game seemed to swing back in the home team s favour. Unfortunately it was not to be. Their magnificent 46-run partnership came to an end when Wilson dragged a ball from the Crookwell opener on to his stumps, dismissedd for a well-made 38. Yusuf did his best to see the team home with the tail and with two overs remaining, the team required 11 runs with one wicket in hand. A few balls later it was all over with Karabar s last batsmen dismissed with the total on 107. As well as ending their title defence, the loss means that 7 of this year s squad have played their last game for Karabar High School, with students unable to play in their final year of school. These boys should be extremely proud of their achievements over their years of representing the school in both Hassett Cup and Davidson Shield cricket, highlighted of course by their 2012 South Coast Championship. I also congratulate the boys for the magnificent way that they have conducted themselves in representing the school. They are: Alex Page (c), Rohan Ashton, Matt Bradley, Zach Douch, Shaun Franks, David Jenkins and Yusuf Parker. The other members of the squad for 2013 were Will Graham, Jay Ludwig, George Cross, Wilson Morshead, Taha Aamir and Finley Hollyhead. These boys will continue to form the basis of a strong Karabar High School Cricket Team for the next few years. See you next season! Mr Duhigg Davidson Shield Cricket Coach. Page 8
