May May 20 Year 7-10 Half Yearly Exams Year 7 Boys & Girls Immunisations Principal s Report NAPLAN, NAPLAN, NAPLAN. Our students in Years 7 and 9 sat these assessments this week and from all reports they cooperated with all their teachers and were well behaved during the assessments. I look forward to receiving the information from these assessments so that we can continue to do the best for our students. POWER PRODUCTION This is just a brief note to congratulate your students and staff on the marvellous production The Power which I saw as a member of a very enthusiastic audience last Friday night. It was most impressive to witness the depth and scope of the talents of your students. It bodes well for the years ahead as well. I think on my count there were some students on stage or backstage at some point in the night; most impressive. Such success is obviously the outcome of the dedicated staff who mentor, guide, support and instruct their students to strive for excellence. I congratulate and thank each and every person who provided input into the overall success of the production. No doubt there were individuals who took on most of the organisational management and artistic direction of the performances and I wish to particularly thank and commend those people. M.Brown R/Director, Public Schools NSW This reflects most of the comments that I heard last Friday. I would just like to add on behalf of my family who were in the audience WOW. The staff and studentss of Karabar High School and Distance Education Centre acknowledgee the traditional owners of the land where we work as the first people of this country. We are working together to educate Australia s future. These items are not just a select group, they involve the whole school community. My thanks go to all, the students, teachers (both as part of the production and those who made it possible to occur), parents, our office people and of course to everyone who saw the production. P&C Please read carefully the article on the reforms for NSW Federation of Parent and Citizens. This will discussedd at the next P&C meeting on 27 th May at 7:00pm. Page 1
2 Karabar Newsletter Year 12 Interviews This week and next Mr Piper and myself will be talking to all the Year 12 students. We will discussing how they went in their half yearlyy examinations, how they feel they are progressing in their studies, what there are thinking about doing next year and if there is anything else that we as a school community can do to help them. The interviews I have had so far have highlighted the maturity and honesty of our students. They have a good idea where they can improve and what help they need. I have spoken to them about the support network that they have and how both their parents and teachers want them to succeed. Colin Devitt Relieving Principal REFORMS TO P&C FEDERATION The NSW Parliament has introduced legislation to reform the NSW Federation of Parent and Citizens Associations, which has suspended operation pending Supreme Court action. While these reforms will not affect the day-to-day operation of individual school P&Cs, they will introduce a new executive structure which will ensure the Federation operates as a modern and representative body on behalf of school P&C Associations. Each school s P&C Association will be asked to vote for councillors and delegates who will represent their electorate at the Federation s Annual General Meeting and councillors who will serve on the Federation s Board of Management. More information will be available on the Department s website at /gotoschool/a-z/involvement.php. Page 2

Dale Cunningham Head Teacher Mathematics A CASE OF IDENTITY FORENSIC SCIENCE PRESENTATION On Monday 12 th May, 120 students from years 7-10 attended a Forensic Science Presentation: A Case of Identity. During the workshop, students were able to examine evidence recovered from the crime scene of an abduction and murder case, the victim and the suspects. Students developed theories about what happened to the young girl, and tested these theories by further examining the evidence. Students then had to use deductive reasoning to solve the crime by building a case to prove which of our suspects committed the crime, how they did it and their motives. The presentation was very hands on, students were encouraged to look at, move and play with the displays and equipment, and the presenter was very enthusiastic. The digital microscope was a favourite, as was the autopsy description. By the end of the presentation, students were able to describe the evidence in detail and piece together the evidence until there were only three suspects to be questioned. The suspects were chosen from the audience and finally, after careful examination, a student was arrested for murder. Page 3
4 The presentation not only helped students understand the processes and techniques of a forensic investigator, but it also educated studentss about the dangers of using social media and drink spiking. The victim of this scenario, a high school aged girl, disregardedd the warnings of teachers and parents and decided to meet a man who connected with her via facebook. The victim had her drink spiked and was later murdered. The presentation reiterated the messages of stranger danger, social media networking and drink spiking to all students who attended. 5 U/15 BOYS SOCCER ROUND 2 Mulwaree 2 defeated Karabar 1 On Friday 9 th of May, Karabar High School travelled to Goulburn to play Mulwaree High School in round 2 of the Bill Turner Cup (U/15 Boys Soccer). Firstly, a big thank you must go out to Cataldo Palombi for his assistance in getting the team out to Goulburn for the match. Karabar Newsletter The match started off at a steady pace with both teams feeling their way into the match with an even spread of possession and goal scoring opportunities. This continued for the majority of the first half. It wasn t until a long clearance from the Mulwaree defence which sailed over the heads of the Karabar defence, leading to a one on one between the Mulwaree striker and the Karabar keeper (Ryan Blake), that the first goal was scored. This was the only goal scored in the first half with the score line reading 1-0 to Mulwaree at half time. The second half was a much different game with Karabar dominating a lot of the possession, field position and goal scoring opportunities. It wasn t long until Karabar scored through Christian Palombi on the back of some persistent attacking raids. At this stage the score line read 1-1 with approximately 15 minutes to play. This set the scene for a close finish, with both teams desperate to score the match winning goal. Unfortunately for Karabar, it was Mulwaree who scored the next goal on the back of a counter attack and cross into the box. In the desperate attempts to clear the ball away from danger, Karabar conceded an own goal with only 3 minutes left to play. This meant the final few minutes of the match were frantic with Karabar going all-out attack leading to a number of goal scoring opportunities that we were unable to capitalise on. It was a thrilling match and unfortunately for Karabar, the result didn t go our way and we have been knocked out of the competition, but we will come back bigger and better next year. 6 U/15 BOYS SOCCER ROUND 3 Goulburn 5 defeated Karabar 4 (in extra time) Karabar Newsletter On Thursday 15 th of May, Karabar High School travelled to Goulburn to play Goulburn High School in the South Coast Area Semi Final of the Errea Cup (Open Boys Soccer). Firstly, a big thank you must go out to Michelle Esposito for her assistance in getting the team out to Goulburn for the match. The match was always going to be an intriguing encounter with both sides having had 2 comfortable wins on their path to qualifying for the semi-final stage of the competition. Karabar with a goal difference of +14 (Rd 1: 5-1 win over Monaro HS and Rd 2: 10-0 win over Yass HS) and Goulburn with a goal difference of +6 (Rd 1: 3-0 win over Mulwaree HS and Rd 2: 6-3 win over Moss Vale HS). This game was set to be a goal fest and it didn t disappoint! The match started off with a lot of nervous energy in the air, with both teams desperate to get the win and progress to the South Coast Area Final. Goulburn managed to snare an early goal (inside of 10 minutes) and put the pressure right on to the boys from Karabar. The boys from Karabar, led by inspirational captain, Vasko Petrovski, hit back in true Karabar fashion with some tremendous lead up play, a perfect through ball from Daniel Felizzi and a classy finish from young gun Zac Risteski. Both sides continued to play attacking football for the remainder of the first half, with neither side able to capitalise on goal scoring opportunities. The half time score line read 1-1. The second half was frantic with the two sides going goal for goal for the majority of the 35 minutes of football. Goulburn scored after 5 minutes putting them in the lead at 2-1, only for Karabar to hit back after 10 minutes to make it 2-2 with a fantastic header from Toni Spaseski from a Zac Risteski corner. Goulburn then scored again after 15 minutes to lead 3-2, only for Karabar to hit back after 20 minutes with another fantastic header from Toni Spaseski this time from a wonderfully taken free kick from Dorian Esposito. Karabar then scored again after 25 minutes through team captain, Vasko Petrovski, with a clinical finish from close range after another perfectly taken corner from Zac Risteski. This gave Karabar the lead for the first time in the match with only 10 minutes to play. Karabar defended staunchly for the next 9 minutes and had the victory in their grasp. With merely seconds remaining in regular time, Karabar conceded a corner with the referee checking his watch anticipating the full time whistle. Karabar managed to defend the first corner, only to concede a second corner which they again defended. When the third corner was taken, Karabar were unable to clear the ball to safety, with the referee unable to blow the whistle to signal full time as the ball was in an attacking area, Goulburn managed to score. And with this goal came the full time whistle. This had the score line read 4-4 after 70 minutes of play (full time). Being a knock out competition, the result of the game must be decided on the day so the match went into extra time (10 minutes each way). Having already played 70 minutes of high intensity football, both teams were exhausted, however, this didn t stop the frantic pace of the second half of regular time extending into extra time. Both teams went on numerous attacking raids until a near impossible goal was scored by Goulburn from just outside the right hand side of Karabar s 18 yard box. The ball was kicked from the striker s non-preferred foot, over Karabar s keeper, Lachlan Abigail, who was in perfect position and snuck just inside the far post and just under the cross bar (the type of goal that you don t see very often, if ever). This had the score line read 5-4 in favour of Page 6
7 Karabar Newsletter Goulburn with less than 2 minutes left in the first half of extra time. The second half of extra time saw a number of attacking raids from Karabar which finally lead to a free kick just outside the Goulburn 18 yard box with just under a minute to play. A near perfect free kick was taken by Igor Nedeski, which was well saved by the Goulburn keeper, but then fumbled and very nearly put in the back of the net by a number of Karabar players who followed the kickk in towards goal. The keeper managed to gather the ball just in time, with the full time whistle of extra time blown not long after this play. The final score line read 5-4 in favour of Goulburn and was a game that truly could have gone either way. Goal scorers: Toni Spaseski (2), Zac Risteski (1) and Vasko Petrovski (1). Outstanding Performances: Vasko Petrovski, Ben Hilder, Jordan Green, Tony Spaseski, Igor Nedeski, Zac Risteski, Jeffery Camm and Daniel Felizzi. A devastating end to school soccer for a number of departing players who have served Karabar High School with pride, commitment, passion and integrity for 4, 5 and for some of them, 6 years! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following players who will be departing at the end of the year and wish them luck with all of their future endeavours; David Jenkins, Vasko Petrovski, Igor Nedeski, Ben Hilder, Lachlan Abigail, Alex Page, Jordan Green and Brad Elliot. Tournament Goal Scorers: 5 goals - Vasko Petrovski, 4 goals - Zac Risteski, 3 goals - Toni Spaseski, and 1 goal - Daniel Felizzi, Brad Elliot, Ben Hilder, Alex Page, Igor Nedeski, Marko Petreski and own goal.
