5 12 The History of Lawn Bowls LADIES BOWLING ARM - PRESIDENT S REPORT 5 Lawn bowling, or bowling on the green, is an outdoor game that has fascinated both young and old for centuries. The actual origin of the game is hidden in the haze of antiquity. There are however, authentic records of well over seven hundred years of bowling history. When Caesar ruled Rome, the game was known as Bocce, and the conquering Roman Legions may well have carried the game to Europe and the British Isles. By the thirteenth century, bowling had spread to France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, and England. Lawn bowling, or bowls has much literary and historical proof of being the real Sport of Kings. From the time of Edward III, the game was restricted by royal decree to Noblemen and others having manors or lands. Successive kings played and enjoyed the game. However, King Henry III, who had bowling greens installed at Whitehall, permitted the common people to play on Christmas Day. Bowling was so well established in England by 1299 A.D. that a group of players organized the Southampton Old Bowling Green Club, the oldest established bowling club in the world that is still active. The game became so popular in England and in France it was prohibited by law because archery, essential to the national defence, was being neglected. The French king, Charles IV, prohibited the game for the common people in 1319, and King Edward III issued a similar edict in England in We are back into our regular Wednesday social competition, and the only problem we are dealing with at them moment is the heat. The days have been terribly hot, and we are constantly reminding ladies to cove up, use sunscreen and keep hydrated. The Great 8 Bowls Challenge is going well, and our ladies have met some formidable teams. We had a rink win on each Saturday against Maroochydore and Mooloolaba, both at their home clubs, and the next game at Pelican Waters will be our strength. With this hot weather, the playing conditions have been very difficult. Four ladies from the Committee represented our Club, and attended, District President, Wendy Fitzgerald s Day at Club Kawana. This was held on Monday 6 February A lovely day to acknowledge Wendy s role as President of the Sunshine Coast District Ladies Bowling Association. A position she is taking on again for the next twelve months. Robyn Pope, Sue Partridge and I all came away a little richer. Sadly Valda was not so lucky. Our first competition for the year got underway on Wednesday 15 February with 13 teams nominating for the Fours. Thank you to all those who nominated. This is wonderful support from all lady bowlers. There were some very close games played in the first week, so this will be an exciting competition to watch. A very warm welcome to our new members, Marina and Barbara who have joined us this year. I am confident you will enjoy the camaraderie and friendship that our Club provides. Robyn Schey How much has the uniform changed!! Don t forget each dollar we contribute goes to Dove Palliative Care Caloundra, so don t feel bad when the win catches your bowl.
6 6 MBA PRESIDENT S REPORT 11 The great eights competition now well under way men s open and division 3 along with our ladies team are proving to be very competitive the players appreciate the support members supply at our home games it would good to see some familiar faces at away games Crackerjack Bowls A few reminders on game days to make all our lives easier : Place bowls bags behind the line of seats. We are all getting a bit wobbly in the legs these days easy to trip over. Names on score cards no name no pay: in ink please no pencil would cheer up the game room boys!! Do not forget to put the shades down and return mats and jacks. Please place used water cups in containers provided. This will save a lot of time and effort from having to clean them up Men s championship fours have commenced shame that only 36 of 190 men listed bowlers take he time to nominate to play, however good luck good bowling to all players. WHERE: Pelican Waters Bowls Club WHEN: Every second Sunday (26 Feb, 12 & 26 Mar 2017) COST: $10.00 includes BBQ lunch RSVP: Sign-up sheet inside on back wall or ask the bar staff. TIME: 8.45am for 9.00am start Bob Johnstone Don t have to know how to play, bowls can be provided, come along and have fun, fun, fun.
