3 14 Mixed Pairs Championship Chairman s Report: 3 WINNERS: John and Wendy Tonks RUNNERS UP: Trevor and Helen McGlynn Hi All Finished the boat trip in Henley today, all went well, and back to Taunton for two days.. Had a great few days down in Cornwall. We stayed in a B&B in St Mabyn a small village 5miles down a narrow road, with a pub to keep us sane! Kept busy for our stay with visits to Port Issac (Doc Martin) Tintagel, (supposely birth place of King Arthur) and Padstow where we had fish and chips at Rick Steins joint. Had a few hairy moments on the narrow roads (a bloody German in a van got stuck in the hedges, so we had to reverse down hill and find another way out. Will send further updates later as off to Paris on Sunday for a week. Byron Congratulations and well done. Happy Father s Day to all the Dads, have a great day.

4 4 Get Well wishes SECRETARY S REPORT: 13 We wish a speedy recovery to any Members who have not been feeling well of late and hope to see you on the greens real soon. At the time of writing, work to resurface the car park had commenced and the project should be completed by mid September. In addition to improved access to the Club, the new car park will enhance the appearance generally and provide dedicated loading zones and disabled parking. Please respect the designated areas and refrain from parking in the zones marked for specific purposes. Other upgrades and maintenance completed or in progress include: a. the installation of a new stove and pizza oven in the kitchen which will speed up meal preparation and reduce waiting times when restaurant numbers a higher than expected. As we all know, quality meals and service are the key to our success. b. a new gaming machine to add variety and maintain interest for those players, who are prepared to move elsewhere to find the more popular games Total Membership at 1 August was 720 comprising 102 Lady Bowlers, 195 Men Bowlers. 7 Non- bowling Members and 416 Social Members. It was interesting to note when completing a recent survey, that the average of our bowling members has changed little in recent years. The average age of our ladies is 70.5 with 42 over 80 and the average age of our men is 74.6 (with 6 who are 90 plus. Sadly, we only have 15 members aged 60 or less. Across 1. Reciprocal 5. Defeat 6. This is slightly down on budget and a little disappointing for the time when we expect a boost from interstate visitors and the annual carnival. However, it is pleasing that all areas showed a profit for the month. Otherwise there is not a lot to report except that we have updated the graphics on our advertising screens and our new facebook page is up and running. 5 12 Coaching Comments LADIES BOWLING ARM - PRESIDENT S REPORT 5 Some Don ts of Bowling The year is fast disappearing and there is so much more to do!! 1. Never throw the jack, deliver it as requested by your skip. It s an important part of the game. 2. Don t run off the mat when delivering your bowl. Take your time and wait to see the result of your bowl. 3. Too many bowlers play per cent narrow bowls. Don t be one of them as a slightly wide bowl is invariably better. 4. Concentrate. Don t allow your eyes or mind to wander. 5. Don t let yourself be distracted by shadows or movements. Wait until any distraction has gone away before you bowl. 6. Don t relax when you have a big lead. There will surely come a time when you will regret it. 7. Don t be too hasty in deciding which shot to play. In singles take the time to look and study the head. In other games wait for directions from your skip, if you are not sure ask for direction. There are usually many possible shots other than the obvious one. 8. Don t drive unless you or the skip has studied the head and made sure that no better alternatives exist? The Triples Championship has been finalized with winners Sue Kuskey, Jackie Grealy and Liz Johnston a very close finish over Di Donohoe, Robyn Schey (substitute for Elaine Oost) and Shirley Carr. Congratulations to all. Novice Singles Competition is under way with record entries thanks to an influx of eager new bowlers boosting this competition - and we have maximum entries for the Major/Minor Fours starting next week sponsored by Judy Davis. Our Pennant teams have done well with everyone showing lots of enthusiasm. Lots happening in September. Wednesday starting time will revert to our summer time of 1.00pm on our first playing day of September. Please make sure you are at the Club by 12.30pm so our Selectors can get games under way on time. Some dates to put in your diaries. 13 th September Ladies Lunch at the Club at 11.30am 14 th September - Forum at 9.00am 9. Don t let your opponent dictate the pace of the game. You can not rush a game of bowls and give your best. 6 6 A Call to all Lady Bowlers MBA PRESIDENT S REPORT 11 The year is slipping by so quickly and before we know it our Annual General Meeting in November will be upon us. As a committee we would like all lady bowlers to consider what they can do for their Club in the upcoming year. All members can make a difference. The Sunshine Coast Winter Carnival was completed on Wednesday 27th July with Pelican bowlers finishing well up the order in all five events. Glowing reports were received from many of the visitors toward the smooth and mistake free running of the five day carnival. A huge vote of thanks goes to all volunteers; from the "lunch ladies", umpires, greens staff, games room staff, bar staff, kitchen staff to the sponsors. There is a broad range of backgrounds, skills and energy in our members and even the smallest commitment is one less task for somebody else. Our committee can benefit from those different skills and ideas and we appeal to every member to bring something to the table. We would also encourage any member to sit in on our meetings to have a better understanding of each role undertaken by the committee. We are asking younger members to take the opportunity to be part of our Ladies Bowling Arm as they are the future custodians of our Club. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop skills and understanding of how decisions are made. It is a commitment to the Club rather than the excitement of being a committee member. This Club meets a huge need, not only to our fellow bowlers but also to our community. Please consider how you can contribute to this wonderful Club. The District Pennants season is progressing past half way with three of the four divisions down the ladder somewhat, with Div 4 close to the lead. All players are aware of the relegation and are trying hard to progress higher in the points. PW coaches and bowlers have given their time to coach approx sixty school children from the PW district for the last five weeks every Friday. This coaching will complete in three weeks. The coaches and bowlers have earned a great thanks for the huge effort from PW bowlers. Bribie Island Social Bowls Club arrived at PW Sunday 21st August with fifty seven bowlers and, after lunch, played with and against a similar number of PW bowlers. This group have an annual booking with the PW club and are a real delight. I would like to refer to a handout most of us would be aware of from early in our bowls career. The handout is of course the ETIQUETTE. I am requesting all bowlers to again refer to this article as unwelcome "habits" are creeping into this game. Good manners, but mostly a big slice of common sense is all that is really required. It can be quite distressing to observe or hear some of the unnecessary actions or comments now in our game.
