PREP NEWSLETTER Issue February 2019 Bridge House Open Day - Tuesday 26 February Enjoy a tour of our campus and classrooms while the school is in session. Guided tours will take place at 10h00, 12h00, 14h00 and 16h00 in the Junior Primary, Senior Primary and College, with an information session about the College in the Theatre at 18h00. Meet some of our students and staff and experience our distinctive, vibrant school in session. Everyone is welcome. Please invite your friends and family to join us.

Grade 7 Camp The Grade 7s went to the Fresh Air Camp in Simon's Town. Everyday we went to the ocean and learnt about sea life that we didn't know existed! We learnt how to follow and how to lead, and we got put in teams that definitely helped everyone improve their skills on how to co-operate with one other. We all gained independence, by having to trust one another, and everyone in your team. At the end of the day, our feet were dirty, our hair was messy, and our eyes were sparkling with enjoyment and knowledge on how to take care of the world around us. Thanks to the teachers who took us on this trip to remember! By Rosie Ratcliffe Grade 7S

Africa Day The Grade 6s are getting to know Africa! In the build up to Africa Day, the Grade 6s have been studying African countries and their rich traditional cultures. Inspired by the vibrant artwork and patterns of the various cultures, the students have been working to research, design and construct African masks which tell a story about a particular country they have been assigned. As usual, we have been blown away by the enthusiasm and inventive thinking of the Grade 6 group.

Whether it s the Boom of a Boom-Whacker, the flash of a dance, the crash of a drum, or the flick of a brush. the Creative arts team continues to channel our children s relentless energy and boundless creativity.

The Bridge House creative arts team had the privilege of meeting the renowned Jeremy James Taylor OBE, to discuss the development of musical theatre and the arts.the team had a wonderful afternoon, discussing observations of global trends, and philosophizing on the way forward for the development of the arts at Bridge House. Too much Screen time? What can you do? We have all seen many articles over the last few years talking about how our children are exposed to too much screen time. Is it harmful? How does it affect our children s health? There are many articles online that are arguing both sides of this debate. So, who should we believe? Well, I think that we should revert to the old saying of too much of a good thing is bad! Devices are extremely helpful, but if they start to rule our lives, then they become bad for us. Click this link to read about how too much screen time can affect our children s health. We are living in a digital age and we are faced with the challenge of managing the amount of time that our children spend looking at screens. What can we, as parents, do to help our children to manage the amount of screen time per day? Apple included a new feature when it rolled out ios12 called Screen Time. This shows you how much time has been spent looking at the ipad, what apps have been used and how long each app has been used. One can also use this feature to set limits for the overall screen time, or for specific apps. Parents are able to set a passcode once limits have been set. Users can also be managed if Family Sharing has been implemented. Click on the link for a tutorial on how to set up Screen Time.

From the Deputy s desk It would seem that every time I write one of these inserts for the newsletter, I start by mentioning just how busy our children have been. I m afraid (or rather, very happy), that today that I have struggled (again!) to find a starting point, as so much has happened in our prep school over the course of the week. To start with, I would like to say well done to our Grade 7s on a wonderfully successful camp. The group returned from camp, richer for the experience and opportunity to partake in fieldwork activities, leadership programmes, team building activities, and a whole lot of snorkelling. Well done to everyone, and thank you to all the staff who joined them. It truly was a memorable week and sets the tone for the year ahead. Tuesday evening was the turn of our younger athletes to show their speed and skill, as they enjoyed their very own JP Sports Day. This was the first time that we split the Sports Day event between the phases. The evening event allowed for families to enjoy a picnic on the bank, while their little ones were the focus of the day as they ran, jumped, crawled... and even flossed their way through the events. More focus has been placed on Clubs this term, with more and more teachers offering exciting learning opportunities for our children, every Thursday morning. It has been wonderful to see the interest in new areas shown by the children. Space Club, Caricatures, Book Club, Craft Club, and so many more wonderful things to try. I am so pleased to see that Service Club remains as popular as ever, with around thirty children making their way across to Wemmershoek Primary to teach PE to their younger ones. What a way to start your Thursday! The Inter-house Gala was a welcome event in this hot weather. Our swimmers did their houses proud, showing great effort on the day, and it was yet another wonderful event. Thank you must go to the Sports Department for the time and effort that goes into organising such events as these, and well done to each and every swimmer. And in amongst all this activity, our children are getting into their routines and have started the year off with a bang in the classroom. Successful schools, particularly in the primary phases, are schools where the children attending feel like they belong. We must continue to strive to make every child s learning experience a happy and memorable one. But in doing so, this must not lead one to focus only on things that we are not doing, and lose focus of all the WONDER that is happening within our school. We continue to advocate an open-door policy and welcome any member of our community to come in and chat to us about how we can continue to grow as a school. Our school has repeatedly been referred to as a happy school, and for this I am very proud to a part of Bridge House. Well done to all our boys and girls on a successful, busy, and happy week at school. Allan Wells

Cricket - Bridge House U13A vs Pniel Primary On Wednesday 30 January 2019 our U13A played their first cricket match for the 2019 season against Pniel Primary. Bridge House won the toss and decided to bowl first. Pniel batted well and managed to score 114 runs in their 20 0vers. The best bowlers for Bridge House were: Ryan Bates William Barclay Loggie Bridge House came in to bat and came up against a good bowling performance by Pniel Primary and only managed to score the winning runs in the last over. The best batsmen for Bridge House were: Sebastien Griffiths.55* Chad Ayford.20 In the end Bridge House U13A won the match by 5 wickets. Well done! U11A cricket vs Eikestad The U11A cricket team lost the toss on Tuesday, 29 January and were to bowl first. Eikestad got off to a positive start losing just one wicket in the first 10 overs for 58 runs. A turn of fortunes for our bowlers was supported by some phenomenal fielding from the team, resulted in a number of wickets at regular intervals. Despite a few missed chances, Bridge House was able to restrict the visitors to just 99 in 20 overs. A superb bowling effort by Harry Morgan saw him claim figures of Finn Gretschel and Nicholas Green made a solid start for Bridge House seeing off a quality opening bowling attack. Harry Morgan joined Nicholas at the crease and together they put the game to bed by taking the attack to Eikestad with positive batting. Harry Morgan ended on 49* with a mature and well calculated innings. Well done to the boys on an incredible start to the year, winning by 7 wickets against tough opposition. I look forward to the season ahead. Amadoda, Bridge House! Manne, Bridge House!

Grade 3 7 Inter House Swimming Gala On Thursday, 31 January our Grade 3 7 pupils took to the pool for the Annual Inter House Swimming gala. The day was filled great personal victories and a wonderful team spirit. It was the White House team that came out as the victors on the day, followed closely by Blue House, who narrowly tipped Red House into second place. Well done, to each and every swimmer! Parents who are interested should contact Gill Malcolm on or gilmal@bridgehouse.org.za Using the pool Given the current high swimming pool usage, it is important that we have every opportunity to keep the pool in the best condition possible. We are battling to get enough cleaning time. As a result we will have to close the pool for maintenance on Tuesday, Thursday and probably also on Saturday mornings from 06h00 to 08h00. Please, no one may use the pool before, or during these cleaning time periods. Long Weekend 15 February to 17 February You are reminded that Friday 15 February is a Bridge House holiday, making the weekend of 15 to 17 February a long weekend for all pupils. This is the Boarders out weekend for this term. Condolences Our sincerest condolences to the Rowjee family on the passing of Darshana s dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this sad time.
