A week off on the Breede River? In the middle of the school term? Don t you do work at school? Yes, our Grade 7s have just spent a week of school time learning lessons that truly challenged, stretched and grew them in ways that only the wider world can provide! From paddling 13km downstream, to navigating a high wire (and knowing how to safely secure themselves in the process!), to completing a Basic First Aid course and even having a sleep out survivor style (with one long drop ) the 57 pupils had a marvellous, but very tiring, week away from the bustling crowd. Many of this group have signed up for the Learning for Life Leadership programme, and the Bundi Camp helped them explore the true meaning of leadership, with integrity, determination and resilience being highlighted as key elements of good leadership

A Memorable Field Trip to Stellenbosch On a scorching hot day near the end of February, the Grade Fives visited Stellenbosch. The Village Museum and Sasol Museum were rich with artefacts from early eras in Southern Africa. We did a comparative study between the San, Khoi and early Europeans, who had pioneered living in a place so different to what they were accustomed to. Thereafter, we walked to the enchanting and beautiful Botanical Gardens where we explored the plant kingdoms. There was also time for reflection and being in the atmosphere of a special part of the garden. Writing which followed, included some of the following reflections: The rain forest is a serene and beautiful place. Water droplets spray on your face, almost like rain from showy clouds. Sunlight creeps through the trees, casting shadows in every direction. There is quietness all around you. You are at peace. A sweet aroma buzzes around your nose like a swarm of bees. Life feels like it has stopped for a moment. Jack Steyl This rainforest could contain anything, but if you stayed on the path you would never know. It was an extremely diverse environment with some trees soaring above your head and some small as a foot. It is a miniature kingdom in the colossal Botanical Gardens! Luke de Villiers My special place was where the bamboo was. It was moist and thick like reeds, and still with no wind. It looked very green and smelt earthy. I felt like I was dreaming and in the Amazon jungle. I thought about my family and farm and my heart opened. Viktor Babl - 6 -

From the Head s Desk On Tuesday, St Cyprians, St George s Grammar and Bridge House collaborated to host the second regional Young Round Square exchange day. The day required the three schools to divide their Grade 6 group into three units, with one unit hosting while the other two headed off to the other two schools. Staff collaborated to ensure the programme was similar at the three venues and promoted the Young Round Square IDEALS (Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service). The theme for the day was Go MAD!,(MAD being an acronym for make-a-difference!) By all accounts, the day at the three venues was a tremendous success with new friendships made in a healthy, fun-filled learning environment. The Grade 6 and 7 College Information Evening took place during the week. I was privileged to listen to the pupils from the College confidently address the Grade 6 and 7 pupils and parents about college life. They spoke with passion and insight, and gave an honest reflection of what the College means, and provides, for them. It was a proud moment, as most of the speakers were part of the Prep before moving to College. The Grade 4 Camp returned on Wednesday afternoon and in chatting to the pupils, it looks set to be their highlight for the term. The High Africa Camp who hosted the group is well situated, the programme and activities are age appropriate yet challenge the children, appropriately, in all the right areas. I even heard one boy telling his dad that he has mastered potjiekos and that he has Thursday night s supper covered. I want to use this opportunity to say a big thank you to all our staff who go the extra mile, leaving their own families as they head out on camps, excursions and other school activities that go well past normal working hours. It is this dedication that makes Bridge House a school that we can be proud of. You are stars! - 7 -

In Barrow s Barrow this week, I want to remind you of the age old tradition of saying please and thank you. I encourage pupils and parents to show respect and appreciation for each other by using these two words. CHALLENGE: Remember to say PLEASE and THANK YOU! Founders Day is around the corner! Next Saturday, 15 March, we will be celebrating Bridge House s 19 birthday. This is a compulsory school day and starts off with a whole school assembly at 09h00 before we move to the field and surrounds to enjoy the Bridge House Carnival. The programme is jam-packed and is set to be another spectacular event. By the time you will be reading this, I would have attended the Prep Relay Gala and should be getting my camp site ready, so I am able to enjoy the JP Camp Out with family and friends. I m looking forward to being a part of this family orientated evening. For those of you who are taking on the Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Race, I wish you well. Enjoy the ride! Condolences It is with deep regret that I need to inform you that Belinda Lindhorst s husband, Mark, passed away on Monday evening. For those of you who don t know Belinda, she is a Prep School teacher and was previously Chair of the Parents Association. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Belinda, Shannon and the family at this difficult time. Belinda will be having a Memorial Service for Mark on Monday 10 March at 16h00 on the Lindhorst Family farm. While she appreciates the support, she has requested that Prep children kindly do not attend the service. Marc Barrow Head of Prep Music Staff entertain residents! On Wednesday 5 March 3 of the Bridge House music staff entertained residents of Bridge Water Manor in Somerset West. It was a lovely afternoon and the selection of music was really appreciated by the audience. Tana Small on Viola, Marsanne Malan on piano and saxophone and Laura Opperman, provided the vocals. Well done, ladies

Chess News! Christiaan van Dyk took part in the Boland Central Chess tournament in Hermanus last Saturday. He followed up his previous wins with 3 and a half more! Here he is in blue, putting his hand up to indicate that he has won the game. We would like to wish Christiaan all the best for the next tournament in Worcester, on the 29th March. The Century City Guess your time canoe challenge The day was chilly and overcast. Great weather for canoeing, but not so wonderful for getting out of bed early. The Guess your time challenge took place at Century City on Sunday morning 2 nd March

There were three categories of competitors. U12 canoeists were to paddle a course of 6 kilometres, U16s a course of 9 kilometres, with open category athletes completing a course of 12 kilometres. During registration, each competitor had to guess the time it would take them to complete the course. The top three guesstimates in each category would receive a cash prize of R500 for the best guess, R300 for the second best guess, and R200 for the third best guess. No watches, clocks, or timing devices were allowed, and the overcast sky made it impossible to use a paddle to turn your canoe into a floating sundial. After a quick briefing, the competitors took to the water and paddled for the start. The course led the paddlers up a canal and back around Intaka Island. Intaka Island is a wetland and bird sanctuary in the middle of the sprawling Century City development, and canoeists got to do a bit of bird watching while they paddled. Bridge House School was represented by Toby Heywood, who won third prize in his category, and Forrest Thomas who won third prize in the lucky draw. Forrest Thomas (Gr 6) Argus Mountain Bike Challenge Sunday 2 March Well done to James Turner and Tulga Saffery, who both completed the 14Km Argus Mountain Bike race last weekend. U13A Cricket vs Paarl Boys Primary The 1 st X1 played against Paarl Boys Primary at Bridge House last Saturday. We batted first and made 102 all out. Kelvin Swanepoel batted superbly and scored 39 runs, but unfortunately we lost wickets at regular intervals and we were not able to put partnerships together. Paarl Boys came in to bat and we immediately applied the pressure through tight bowling and good field placing. They passed our score with 6 wickets down, but the boys are to be commended for their fighting spirit which they showed throughout the match. U12 T20 Cricket vs Simondium Primary The U12 cricket team played against Simondium at Groot Drakenstein last week. We lost the toss and batted first, but could only manage 74 runs in our 20 overs. Lloyd Phillips batted superbly and scored a well-played 28 runs. We fought back strongly with our bowling and were in with a chance to win the match. Unfortunately, we lost by 4 wickets. Well played, boys! U11A Cricket vs Eikestad Primary Bridge House batted first and made 96/3 in our 20 overs. Luke Holman top scored with 36 not out and Thandi Lees made 34. Luke and Thandi put on a 61 run partnership together. Eikestad went in to bat and managed to pass our score with 4 wickets down. BH lost by 6 wickets. U11A Cricket vs Paarl Boys Primary Bridge House batted and made 55\5 in 20 overs. Paarl Boys made the total without losing a wicket

U12 T20 vs Pniel - Monday We batted first and scored 107. We restricted Pniel to 54 runs, thus winning by 53 runs. U13B vs Eikestad Primary - Wednesday Eikestad batted first and they scored 107 runs in 20 overs. We chased down the runs with one ball to spare and only losing 3 wickets. We won the match by 7 wickets. Hunter Thompson scored 57* runs off 54 balls. The week ahead: Mon 10 March U11B Cricket vs Wellington Prep Bridge House Thurs 13 March U13 A Boys vs Hugo Rust Wellington U13 B Boys vs Hugo Rust Wellington U11 A Boys vs Paarl Boys Paarl U13 A Girls vs Noord-Eind Paarl U13 B Girls vs Noord-Eind Paarl U11 A Girls vs Paarl Gymnasium Paarl Swimathon 2014 The success of this event as a fundraiser depends on YOU!
