P.O.Box 444 Franschhoek 7690; Tel: (021) ; College Fax: (021) ; Prep Fax: (021) ; Web Address: P R E P N E W S Issue March 2017 A trip to Franschhoek! As part of their Integrated Studies curriculum, the Grade 4s look into their own history and the history of Bridge House. We then move a little further afield and learn more about the history of the local area, including Franschhoek and the French Huguenots. On Friday 24 February, we took a trip to the Huguenot Monument and Museum in Franschhoek. With the help of our tour guides, we were able to look at the Franschhoek Monument in a whole different light as we learnt what the various aspects of the monument symbolise. In the museum,we were shown a lot of items belonging to the French Huguenots and discovered how, why and when the Huguenots came to this country. Imagining ourselves traveling abroad the Galley or Oosterland assisted us in understanding their struggles and determination. The outing was very educational and helped us to consolidate a lot of what we had learnt in class. We ended our trip with a quick snack under the trees before heading back to our school.

Grade 2s visit Giraffe House At the Giraffe House we learnt that a crocodile is 5 meters long. Did you know a giraffes tongue is 45cm long? And did you also know a snake can dislocate its jaws! And a giraffe has 7 neck bones? And in one ostrich egg can fit 34 chicken eggs! Akhilesh Desai The giant African bullfrog is an amphibian. When he gets scared he squirts water. Himani Rowjee A crocodile has an extra eyelid. A snake is cold blooded. A snake sheds its skin. A snake lays their eggs on land and a snake uses its muscles to move. If you see a snake stay still when you see where it s hiding. Kelly Moore A giraffe is the tallest mammal. Crocodiles are 5 meters and it weighs 450kg. Tarantula has 8 legs and it is an arachnid. Marlow Roth A giraffe cannot eat from the ground because its neck is too long so they eat from trees. A snake does not have legs because they have muscles and snakes are cold blooded. Crocodiles can stay under water for 3 hours. Liam Erasmus - 3 -

From ballerinas to rock stars, to scientist! Last Thursday the Grade 1s delighted us with showing and telling us about what they would like to be when they grow up one day and why. The diversity of professions was exciting to see, from ballerinas to scientists who want to save the world by discovering how to transform sand into water, to spies (some even with homemade jetpacks!) to teachers and artists, just to name a few. The Grade 1s spoke about what skills they need to learn at school in order to do their jobs one day

The Grade 7s had their first visit to the new science lab this week do conduct some chemistry investigations. They performed neutralization reactions using various indicators. We hope to see them here again soon

Grade 6 Cake Sale Wed 8 March at 1 st Break! From the Head s Desk Seeing the photographs of our Grade 4s at the Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek, the Grade 2s at Giraffe House, the Grade 7s working in a state-of-the-art Science laboratory, and the Grade 1s dressed up and talking about one day when I am big on a school day, reminded me again of what a privilege it is to be part of a school that offers - and celebrates a broadly holistic approach to education. Yes, formal teaching and learning and the rigorous assessment thereof is the business of Bridge House, but it is the way this happens that makes Bridge House so special. Walk through our quads on any day and see children actively engaged either in the classroom, or on the verandahs; in the Learning Commons, the IT room, the gym the sports fields. Yes, this week I want to boast about the incredible things that go on in an incredible school. And there s more because we all have more in us than we know (as Kurt Hahn, the founder of the Round Square organisation keeps reminding us, even from the walls of the Prep Hall) Learning for Life is what shapes what we believe at Bridge House. Grade 7 pupils who have signed up for the challenge are working at local soup kitchens, walking animals at shelters, collecting Easter eggs for charities, helping with homework in the Junior Primary in the afternoons; learning to surf, to type, to cook, to speak a foreign language the list goes on. Our service club is at work in the Valley; and the choir, the marimba band, the Art club! Does it sound as though I am boasting about our school? Yes, I am: unashamedly. With Founders Day just round the corner, please be reminded that Saturday 18 March is reserved for our Founders Day celebration, and is a compulsory school day. It is a day of celebration and definitely unites the Bridge House community. More on this event will follow in the weeks to come

Information regarding changes to our reporting structure in the Senior Prep has been posted today, which reminds us that parent-teacher meetings in the Pre-Primary and Junior Primary are being scheduled for the next few weeks, with Senior Primary parents meeting early on next term. This week, I want to again emphasise good manners and encourage staff and parents to model the correct behaviours, so together we can continue to reinforce good manners in our children. This weekend is the chance for our budding young cricketers to shine as we host the Prep Mini Cricket Festival at Bridge House. Parents are always welcome. Come along to support our young cricketers as they embark on their cricketing journey in a fun-filled setting. Marc Barrow Head of Prep CAKE SALE Wednesday 8-9 -

Mini Cricket U9 Mini cricket games took place last week Thursday, with the boys and girls showing great eagerness and commitment to play, despite the 38 heat! Pniel Primary School proved to be a good challenge in preparation for the up and coming Mini-cricket festival, and the players were able to put into practice what they had been learning over the past few weeks. Well done to all the boys and girls for bringing their best effort and for showing great form on the day. U11A vs Eikestad Primary On Monday 21 February, Bridge House U11 played against Eikestad Primary. Bridge House won the toss and selected to bowl first. The Bridge House bowlers, Benjamin Dippnall and Chad Swanepoel had good spells and Eikestad was restricted to only 88 runs after 20 overs. Bridge House came through strongly with the bat, with Chad Swanepoel scoring 43 not out, so helping Bridge House to win by 7 wickets. Well done, boys. U12: T20 Competition The Annual Groot Drakenstein Games Club u12 T20 Cricket tournament is underway, and as always is a great way for our schools in the valley to bond, creating a good platform for the further development of relationships between all the schools involved. This was evident during the match between Bridge House and Simondium Primary. The match was played in a good spirit and at the end of match CRICKET was the winner!

U13B vs St Vincent Primary The u13b team played against St Vincent on Wednesday, 22 February. Bridge House was sent in to bat first and there was a solid performance by the top order, particularly Macwhill Hanse. After a middle order collapse, the tail was unable to put a convincing total on the board. Bridge House was bowled out for 54. St Vincent was able to put the Bridge House bowlers away without much trouble. The boys were tenacious and showed good sportsmanship all round, despite losing by 10 wickets. It was especially enjoyable to watch some boys playing their first ever cricket match. We look forward to seeing their game developing in the months to come. U13A vs Pniel Primary This was a low scoring, yet exciting match to watch on Wednesday 22 February on the Bridge House Oval. Bridge House won the toss and decided to bat first. They were bowled out for 36 runs in 13.5 overs. Pniel came in to bat, but with the brilliant bowling of Oliver Gauntlett ( ) and Rico Minen ( ), the Bridge House team bowled out Pniel for 30 runs, winning the game by 6 runs. U13A vs Redhill (Johannesburg) On Sunday 25 February, we hosted Redhill Prep (Johannesburg), our final touring team for the cricket season. Redhill won the toss and asked Bridge House U13A boys to bat first. Bridge House managed to score only 98 runs in their 35 overs. Redhill Prep went in to bat and easily scored the runs for the loss of 2 wickets, thus winning by 8 runs. Thanks to all the parents for your support on the day

Oliver Gauntlett taking a catch during the match Jake Downie U13A Wicket Keeper in action Sprint Gala Once again Bridge House hosted another successful Inter schools Sprint Gala which took place on Friday, 24 February We hosted 8 schools from Stellenbosch, Wellington, Durbanville and Cape Town. 17 records were broken on the day, with 9 of those being accredited to the Bridge House team. 18 Saturday 18 March 2017 This year, Founders Day will take place on Saturday 18 March. Parents who have been to previous Founders Days where the whole school, parents and pupils from Playschool to Matric, get together to celebrate Bridge House, will know not to miss this occasion. Last year, we were not able to accommodate everyone in one venue for the assembly but this year we have a huge marquee on the field and all our parents are invited to the assembly which begins at 09h30. After the Assembly until +/-15h00, the PA have organised entertainment for all ages from Pre-Primary to Matric. There will be food trucks with a variety of tasty things to eat and a beer and wine garden for the adults. (No under 21s will be allowed into this area at the theatre). See the poster which follows. This year we are celebrating 22 years of Bridge House education. Please note that Founders Day is compulsory for all our pupils, and counts as a school day. More details will follow later but please put aside the morning of 18 March to join us at school. The school extends its thanks to the people of Boekenhoutskloof for being the sole wine provider for Founders Day and for their ongoing support of the school
