Volume 34 ~ 12 October 2018 Welcome Back Grade 7 Class of 2013! How wonderful it was to welcome back the Grade 7s of 2013 to their Matric Tea on Tuesday afternoon. They spent the time re-connecting, reminiscing and wandering around the campus appreciating what has changed and what has wonderfully stayed the same! Mrs Rautenbach's "smiley faces" and "famous crumbed chicken" were absolute hits - as always! We wish these talented young people all the very best with their final exams and whatever new adventures that come their way.
Grade 3 Outing to Sandringham Farm There was so much to see and so much to do for the Grade 3s at the Sandringham Agri Groot Plaasproe. What ha awesome day they had!
HEADlines Somerset House 70 th Celebrations We are only 20 days away from our 70 th Celebrations! You will have received information about the events which will be happening at our school on the 1 st and 2 nd of November. The Haydock Series Presentation by Susan Comrie should prove to be fascinating at this time when so much information about corruption has been exposed. Susan has been on the frontline in the battle to expose corruption, and you have the opportunity to listen to her experiences and engage with her on the topic on the 1 st of November. On the 2 nd of November we will hold our Traditional Founders Day Assembly in the morning. This will include the Candle Lighting Ceremony. The Junior Primary and Senior Primary Galas will take place after that. Then, of course, we look forward to a huge family event with Elvis Blue under the Oaks. The concert will include an item with all our children, and it is our hope that every parent and child of our school will be there. Bring your friends and enjoy this special evening. Chris Storey Headmaster chrsto@somersethouse.co.za

It was wonderful to hear all about the memories you have of this school.
Junior Prep Disability Awareness Week This week the children in the Junior Prep have been learning about different disabilities and what it means to have an impairment. In classes we have discussed why and how we are all different, what we think it would be like to have a disability, and how we would like to be treated if we had a disability. We have talked about disabilities that you see and those that you don t and have discussed how to treat people with a disability. Yesterday we welcomed three visitors from an organization called Changeability from Stellenbosch. They talked to the children about their disabilities and the children took part in some practical activities. The highlight was meeting Alexis, the guide dog. The children learnt how to guide someone with a visual impairment and were able to experience what it would feel like to play balloon volleyball whilst sitting on their bottoms. It was a huge learning experience.

Message from Grade 7 Pupil, Sebastian Devereux Dear Parents of Somerset House My name is Sebastian Devereux, a grade seven pupil at Somerset House. For grade seven we have been required to complete a leadership programme which some of you may be aware of. As part of the leadership programme we are required to complete a physical challenge which pushes our boundaries. So I have decided to attempt to bat against a bowling machine for 12 consecutive hours. If the challenge is completed, I will be the youngest person in the Southern Hemisphere to bat for that amount of time. So I need your help; I am looking for support/sponsorships from any families or companies that would be willing to help out. I am in need of sponsors to fund equipment and supplies such as bats, pads, gloves, balls, branded shirts, food, water, medical supplies and sustenance. Your time on the day, by popping in to offer encouragement would also be welcome support. The event will take place, in the Simpson hall at Somerset House on the third of November 2018, with the first ball being bowled at 8am. Note that the equipment used, and supplies left over will be donated to a worthy cause. To anyone that would like to sponsor me or if in need of further information please contact me at sebastiandev438@gmail.com or my parents: Petra Devereux, / petra@elevationpersonnel.co.za or Michael Devereux, michael.devereux@hilton.com My class- Gr 7 Chevallier Kind regards, Sebastian Devereux Chores for Change The Junior Prep children have been doing chores and little projects to raise money so that we can treat our friends from the Tereo School towards the end of the year. These are some of the chores that were done by children from Grade 2VR: Daniella: sold cookies all the way in Durban for R5 for a whole packet of cookies Sofia Heusser with Daniella Clayton and Lily Van Greunen: sold pancakes outside of the house and Sofia s dad double the amount raised Annika: gave my dad a massage and made all the beds Jonty: washed the washing, hung it to dry and took it off Andrew: packed the dishwasher all by himself and made supper Ethan: loaded the dishwasher, tidied the garden and mopped the floors Zinnia: helped her dad clean the pool, cleaned her sisters bedroom and scrubbed the floors Alex: fed the dog and made his bed Aneiran: polished his shoes, woke up on time and helped with dinner Christine: packed and unloaded the dishwasher and made her bed Campbell: helped my dad break down the wall in the garden Logan: wiped the counter, packed the dishwasher and vacuumed the house twice Nicholas: picked up the dog poo every Sunday and his dogs poop a lot Sophia: helped her dad sort the garage Gabe: cleaned my gran s stoep and table and made my mom s bed and tidied her room Gisele: made her bed and cleaned the playroom Gabriella: cleaned the toilet, study and helped my grandpa clean his office

Grade 00 Art The Grade 00s were learning about Vincent van Gogh and, using his sunflowers painting as inspiration, created these awesome artworks.
Sign Language As part of Disability Awareness Week, the Grade 2s learnt about Sign Language. Here they can be seen practising some of what they have learnt.
Sports News 1 ST XI CRICKET TOUR TO KNYSNA Last term our 1 st XI went on a cricket tour to Knysna. We stayed at a lovely place called The Islander. We played three games, winning 2 and losing 1. We beat Gene Louw by 11 runs (Michael Royden-Turner 54*, Matteo Zaina 3-21 in 3 overs). We beat Durbanville by 123 runs (Keanu Coetzer 50, Matteo Zaina 3-36 in 8 overs). We lost to Bastion by 7 wickets (Keanu Coetzer 30, Daniel Stenslunde 1-14 in 6 overs and Suzy Whall 1-36 in 6 overs). We would like to thank Mr Rank and Mr Kinkead-Weekes for taking the team. GEORGIE ENDS THE SEASON ON A HIGH Georgie Gilfillan competed at the South African Eventing Championships in Plettenberg Bay from rd September. One needs to qualify to participate in this event and Georgie has done really well throughout the year. Georgie and her pony, Clifford Arapaho, won the 90cm Pony Rider Class. Congratulations, Georgie! This is a wonderful achievement of which we are extremely proud.
KIANA EXCELS AT AQUABEAR GALA This past weekend Kiana Staples headed up to Port Elizabeth to participate in the Aquabear Gala. The gala took place over 4 days and Kiana swam brilliantly, winning medals in the following events: Gold Medals: 50m Freestyle 50m Backstroke 50m Butterfly 100m Freestyle 100m Backstroke Silver Medal: 100m Breaststroke Kiana also won the trophy for the best swimmer in her age group, 8 years and younger. Wow, what awesome achievements. Congratulations Kiana, we are super proud of you! CRICKET VS DANIE ACKERMANN: WEDNESDAY 10 OCTOBER Age-group Opposition Result Stand out performer U11A Danie Ackermann Won by 67 runs Whole team 1 st XI Danie Ackermann Won by 125 runs Matthew Lowe 50* Keanu Coetzer 50* Daniel Stenslunde 5-6 (5 0vers) GENERAL SPORT INFO Tennis Team Practices: These take place on a Monday afternoon. The children who are in positions 1-8 on the tennis ladder are invited to these sessions. Tennis challenges may take place before school, breaks or after school if the courts are available. The challenge must be arranged by the challenger and it will be the best of 5 games, so whoever wins three games first, wins the challenge. If there is a change to positions on the ladder, the result must be reported to Mrs Bouah, Mr Appollis or Miss Mac. Girls Mini Cricket: Should the girls not have mini cricket matches on a Wednesday, we would like them to attend the swimming sessions. If they have matches, they will be excused from swimming lessons. Boys Mini Cricket: Should the boys not have mini cricket matches on a Wednesday, they will have mini cricket practices, provided that the coaches are not away at matches with other age groups. Please see the weekly schedule each week for confirmation of the arrangement for that week. Swimming: Swimming lessons are compulsory for all Grade 1 3 children. Should a child wish to be excused from these sessions, this will only be allowed if the child in question is water safe and is able to swim 25m unaided. The reason for this is that our camps and outings often involve water activities and we would like all children to participate in these activities with confidence and enjoyment rather than fear.
