She achieved her award in Charlotte Barlow, Skye van der Walt and Janie de Lange were awarded their Gold awards last week but were not able to attend the Gold Awards ceremony. SAIPA National Accounting Olympiad Every year the Gr 12 Accounting students take part in the SAIPA National Accounting Olympiad. Congratulations go to Kaila Fourie, for being the first female in the Western Cape in She received a certificate, medal and corporate gifts from SAIPA.

Scramble Bell Award The Scramble Bell Award is nominated and voted for by the Grade 11 class and is awarded to the Grade 11 pupil who shows the following characteristics: the candidate must be honest, reliable and an upstanding member of the school community. He/she should be someone of integrity who is proud to be a pupil of Bridge House, as demonstrated by his/her uniform, behaviour, attitude and attendance. Congratulations, Konrad Blümers! The first duty of the Scramble Bell Ringer is to ring out the Matrics after their Valedictory Assembly.

Matrics last day The Matrics are already well into their exam programme but last Friday they celebrated the last day of their school careers with a breakfast where they had a private awards ceremony with some amusing certificates being presented. Afterwards they enjoyed tea with their parents and teachers and signed the board which will be placed upstairs in the gym. Then followed the Valedictory Assembly with musical performances and poignant and meaningful speeches made by their peers and Mrs Eslick and Mr Van Deemter. Lastly they left through an archway formed by the College students, teachers and their parents. It was both a happy and a sad occasion with so much to look forward to and yet so much to leave behind after twelve years of schooling.

Exciting Times - we have started the Astroturf! Last week we signed the contract with Synsports for the construction of a Hockey Astroturf for Bridge House School. Synsports have built numerous Hockey Astroturfs around the country which have been used for competition right up to the level of international tournaments. This was made possible through various fundraising initiatives and through the taking up of a debenture by a Bridge House family. The debenture needs to be repaid so fundraising will have to continue in earnest. The debenture and funds raised, only cover the surface, fencing, lighting, a basic technical area and the essential hockey equipment. The school is covering the infrastructure costs the sewer and water provision, the new transformer and electricity supply etc. At this stage we intend paving the side of the field closest to the school with interlocking brick pavers that can be lifted and re-used for access roads and parking. In the future this surface will be the area for a full grandstand, permanent changing rooms and clubhouse facilities. In the interim we will probably have to use the Bedouin tents, Wendy house changing rooms and probably pop-up tuckshop facilities. As the funds come in, the grandstand and ancillary facilities can be constructed in incremental phases. The parking and access roads on the new sports fields will also have to be upgraded from temporary to finished specs as funding becomes available. The programme is to do all of the Astro compaction and sub-base layer work before the builders holidays. Early next year the turf works will start and the facilities will come on stream for the next hockey season. This facility will be a huge boost for Bridge House. The Astro will serve Prep and College boys and girls. We currently spend a fortune on transporting players to Stellenbosch and Paarl as all serious league hockey, is now played on an artificial Astroturf surface. The turf fields on the new property have been seeded and these should become available for use in One of the conditions of servitude on the current gravel road is that as soon as we start using the fields, we have to hard-surface the roadway. This is planned to happen at the start of next year. At this point the entrance onto the school property will be able to move up to the double gates (the ones with the banner on them) and the current entrance and exit gates will become an exit only point. This will create a far better traffic flow off the R45. Mr Rory Malcolm

New Bridge House Website The new Bridge House Website went live this week. Please have a look at it here: Thank you to the developers, Country Digital who did a great job and whose services we can highly recommend. It was a pleasure working with these professionals. 60 Minutes with the Heads Monday 9 November In the interests of good and improving communication between school and parents, Mike Russell and Marc Barrow, Heads of the College and Prep respectively, will host the termly 60 Minutes with the Heads meeting, on Monday 9 November in the THEATRE from 08h00 to 09h00. In order to help the Heads prepare properly for this, please any questions or concerns (of a general nature) you may have, to PA@bridgehouse.org.za by or on Monday 2 November. The PA has kindly offered to bundle these into a folder and forward them to the Heads, who will then prepare responses to the matters raised, and out the agenda. Parents interested in these agenda items will be welcome to come along and participate in the conversation. Please note that any issues mailed to PA@bridgehouse.org.za after that closing date will not be on the agenda for this meeting, and will either be replied to in the interim, or carried over to the next 60 Minutes in the third term. The rules for 60 Minutes are simple: it's a constructive and collaborative initiative; matters raised and mailed through need to be of a general nature; if deemed a better option to do so, the Heads can respond directly by to any issues before the meeting; there will be honest and frank responses and discussion around the topics on the agenda; questions from the floor need to be only about the agenda issues: no "surprises" and no "general" please! giving the Heads some preparation time is simply so that if figures and data are required for an answer, or if someone else's expertise is needed, there is an opportunity to gather this and give full answers (and perhaps put it into a presentation of sorts); time: strictly 60 minutes for the forum, so that it's short and sharp and those attending can plan their Please morning. make use of this opportunity. 60 Minutes is there for you to raise Mr Mike issues Russell (anonymously) which may be worrying you or that you want to find out more about. In addition, the Heads have an open-door policy and you are most welcome to make an appointment to see them. Textbooks 2016 Information about textbooks has been ed to you. 11 River Health WESSA is a South African environmental organisation with a mission to implement high impact environmental and conservation projects which promote public participation in caring for the Earth. Wessa has partnered with extreme swimmers, Andrew Chin and Henko Roukema, who have set off to swim the Berg River in the Western Cape from source to sea, aiming to highlight the deteriorating state of our country s rivers and to stimulate action and discussion by the relevant authorities, affected communities and the general public towards saving these vital water resources. Last Monday, after hiking to the source of the Berg River at Assegaaibosch Kloof over the weekend, the swimmers started their endeavour with a swim across the Berg River dam in Franschhoek, and then entered the river below the dam. About 8km from the start the swimmers were met on the river bank by a large group of enthusiastic supporters, including representatives from WESSA, participants from the Department of Environmental Affairs Youth Environmental Services (YES) Programme, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning s Berg River Improvement Project (BRIP), Awesome South Africans online platform, environmental consulting company Ground Truth, the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve, and teachers and pupils from Bridge House School. Chin and Roukema gave a short talk on the purpose and importance of the initiative, before a minisass river health test was conducted by WESSA with the help of the Bridge House pupils. The swimmers then re-entered the river and - supported by a paddler and a backup vehicle - they will now follow the course of the river for approximately 200km, with the goal of arriving at the mouth in Velddrif on the West Coast within ten days. The swimmers will face numerous challenges along the way, including a deterioration in the quality of the water they are swimming in caused by sewerage overflows, agricultural and other polluted inflows.
