1 BRIDGE HOUSE PRE-PRIMARY PREPARATORY COLLEGE COLLEGE NEWS No March 2015 Easter Hockey Tournament Boys Report - The 1 st XI Hockey Squad was one of 16 boys teams that participated in the Fairmont Easter Tournament. It was a fantastic opportunity to play against a range of teams from all over the country and the added bonus of playing all 6 games on Astro. Our focus was to use these games as a chance to identify our best combinations and work on playing structures. Our most notable successes were a 3-0 victory over Kloof High School and a 2-0 win over Durbanville High School, which meant that we finished 4 th in the B-section and 12 th overall. As first time participants in this tournament it was reassuring to see how our young side held their own in all of the games and the improvement demonstrated not only individually, but collectively as a squad, was most encouraging. 2 Girls Report - After the Easter holiday both the Boys and Girls first team hockey squad returned to school where they did not start class but instead hopped on a bus to Durbanville to take part in the four day Fairmont Hockey Festival. On the first night we met with the thirty other squads from all around the country and had great fun exchanging war cries and getting to know one another over a braai. The competition was fierce, the camaraderie was fantastic and the Bridge House squads did us proud. Both squads showed their mettle in the play-off games emerging victorious. Some games were lost and some won, but in true Bridge House fashion both squads played with great sportsmanship and each finished fourth in their league. Well done to the players, a big thank you to the coaches and a shout out to Fairmont for an amazing start to the Hockey season. We are all looking forward to our next festival at Oakhill. 4 St Andrew s Netball Festival The first team netball squad of 12 players attended the St Andrew s Netball Festival from Thursday 9 April Sunday 12 April in Johannesburg. This was the second time that Bridge House has attended the Festival (we attended in 2009). A total of 32 schools took part. For the first two days we played pool matches.

Our results were as follows Southdowns lost 8-20 Waterstone lost Kingsmead lost Roedean won 14-4 Holy Rosary won 13-9 Springfield won We ended 4 th in this pool with the same number of points as Kingsmead who were placed third, but who attained a better goal average than us. This was an excellent way to start the season and the girls learnt a great deal and made friends with girls from all over South Africa. Thanks to Mrs Christel Taylor, Miss Kayla Carstens and Mrs Colleen de Villiers who accompanied the team.

6 KKNK Festival This year, a group of Grade 10, 11 and 12 students travelled to Oudtshoorn to attend the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival. This year s festival showcased performances from across the country. These varied from comedies such as My Boetie se boetie se boetie se baba, to physical theatre performances such as the play Al julle Volke. We saw some phenomenal performances from wellknown artists such as Emo Adams and Amanda Strydom. With so many shows, it was difficult to choose a favourite one as each show stood out for its particular performance style. Many of the performance were thought-provoking and inspired in the students ideas for their own future performances. Of course, any trip to Oudtshoorn would not be complete without a visit to the Cango Caves. These legendary caves steeped in the history of the past were an informative experience. After this we stopped at Wilgewandel where students enjoyed quad biking, camel rides, water slides and miniature golf. The KKNK Festival experience was an inspiring one that has instilled a love for theatre in some and which has seen that passion for theatre grow in others. Ms Wesahl Harris

The bus trip was long but uneventful and we arrived at our beautiful campsite late in the afternoon.

And so began four days of fun and adventure.

8 Matrics relax on the Orange River During the holidays, thirty five Grade 12s, two teachers and our bus driver set off for the Orange River. The bus trip was long but uneventful and we arrived at our beautiful campsite late in the afternoon. After the long bus trip, most of us were keen to test out the flowing waters of the river. And so began four days of fun and adventure. The days were filled with hard rowing, laughing, splashing, rapids, swimming and jumping off rocks. The evenings were filled with highly competitive card games and late night conversations. Our guides took great care of us and made the whole trip an immensely enjoyable time of bonding and relaxation after a hectic term. Ms Samantha Tyler

9 Clay Target Shooting Tristan Stubbs has been invited to shoot in an Invitation SA Junior Team at the upcoming SA Grand which incorporates the SA National Championships in various clay target disciplines. This takes place from Thursday 30 th April to Sunday 3 rd May. Congratulations and good luck for the Championships, Tristan! Archery During the holidays, Scott Jacobs participated in the 65 th South African National Archery Championships held at the Marks Park Sports Club in Johannesburg. On day one of the competition 144 scoring arrows were shot and Scott managed to achieve a fourth place with a score of 1366 / On day two 72 scoring arrows were shot and Scott achieved a third position with a personal best score of 659 / 720. This is also a new Western Province record. For his achievements at the tournament and during the last 12 months, Scott was awarded Provincial colours by the chairman of the Western Cape Archery Federation. 10 Possible Bus Service If there are any families who are interested in a 17h15 bus service back to Stellenbosch via Boschendal, Pniel, Lanquedoc, Kylemore, Orangeville, Banhoek Valley and Stellenbosch, please contact Janis Christian on janchr@bridgehouse.org.za This notice is to gauge interest for this service. The school bus and driver are not available for this return journey to Stellenbosch and the service would have to be provided by an outside contractor. Volunteers needed for the 4 th annual FLF Book Week for Young Readers! From Monday 11th May to Thursday 14th May, Bridge House will be hosting participating authors for the 4 th annual Book Week for Young Learners. During this exciting week, authors will read their stories, and discuss their books with more than 4,500 children at 10 schools in the Valley. We are looking for volunteers to help as hosts to the visiting authors. As a volunteer you would need to collect your author from the meeting area at Bridge House, drive them to their events and back again (all events are held at schools within close proximity of Bridge House). Each event lasts for minutes. Most authors will do two morning sessions, ending by pm. The authors love engaging with the children, visiting the schools and very much appreciate the help and friendliness of the volunteers. In past years, volunteers have really enjoyed meeting the authors.
