PTA 2 nd hand clothing shop is closed until 15 March Any urgent requests can be forwarded to Sue Chapman schapman@telkomsa.net Boy/Girl Gala Glory The Rhenish swimming team has done it yet again. Rhenish Girls High claimed 1st place at the Boy/Girl gala for the 11th consecutive year, narrowly beating Rustenburg Girls High to 1 st position on the podium by a mere 7 points. Herschel Girls High placed third. After a few hiccups at the beginning of the gala, the team settled into their stride (read stroke ) and came together as one, motivating and encouraging one another as we swam out of our skins, aiming to take the winning shield back on the bus with us. Rhenish almost placed in the top 3 for every race in which we swam. Many first places were also achieved. Every swimmer pushed her boundaries to the limit and swam with such pride in every single race. The cheerleaders did a fantastic job of getting everyone to sing and cheer their hearts out for the swimmers. Rhenish was definitely the school with not only the best swimmers but also the most spirit. The swimming team dearly appreciates each and every supporter and staff member that came to support us and cheer us on. Holly Coates

3 Grade 8 Leap Day Hangout As part of the fundraising initiative for the Matric Dance 2016, a group of enthusiastic moms and Grade 11s, along with Mrs Fourie, organised a picnic in the school garden for Grade 8s from Rhenish, Paul Roos, Bloemhof and Stellenbosch High School. The support for the event surpassed all expectations, with over 300 tickets sold and, judging by the laughter, dancing and general festiveness, the Grade 8s enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Down in the Dirt, a boy band from Paul Roos, provided the live music and with fires to toast marshmallows, picnic blankets to settle down and chat on, and a tuck shop to get extra food and drinks from, this was an event which is sure to be earmarked as an annual one on the Rhenish calendar. It was fantastic to see everyone from the different schools hanging out together and getting to know one another. Thank you to Renita du Toit, Sue Chapman and all the other moms who worked so hard to put the event together and to Mrs Fourie and the Grade 11 girls who were superstars. Don t miss out on the fun and be sure to support our next fundraiser for the Matric Dance the Moms and Daughters Tea on Saturday 14 May Corrina Everitt Music Department Revamp The Music Department, with the assistance of the PTA, underwent a little revamp and modernisation during the last school holidays. The final touches were added this week with the arrival of the cushions for the two benches in the Music Passage. A big THANK YOU to Fabric Centre for the donation of the fabric used to cover the cushions so beautifully. Now, beautiful music can be made in beautiful serene surroundings.

4 Drama Fest This year, Artscape Schools Festival or drama fest as Rhenishers like to call it, was just as intense and invigorating as always. The productions and workshops sparked much debate amongst Rhenishers. The festival culminated in results we value greatly as Drama people: critical thinking and physical awareness. Many opinions were formed and shared. Aside from a lot of fun and an abundance of cute boys, the girls learned a lot about what it means to be part of the theatre world, whether on the stage or behind the curtains. On the first day we trekked through traffic before 6am to get to Cape Town before 7:30am. Everything ran smoothly with registration and after the keynote speech was delivered by Rob Van Vuuren, the girls were off for a day of fun. If you were a fly on the wall in some of the workshops, glee would have been evident on the faces of our girls as they danced, mimed and hummed their way to a better understanding and control of one of their main performance tools: the body. The productions this year varied vastly. For a drama teacher it is incredibly exciting to have your learners exposed to solo performances and ensemble work, complete Poor Theatre where theatre is stripped to its bare necessity: the actor, or have lights, costume and sound wrap us up in the wonder of the performance. It was an extremely inspiring experience. We entered into the world of theatre and learnt so much from the professionals. - Jessica Feldtman It was an eye opening experience. It exposed us to the world of theatre and to the importance, meaning and true beauty behind the arts. We were enriched by the experience which we will use to grow, to improve and to perfect ourselves in the arts with a dedicated, committed and positive attitude. - Jamie Barron To attend this festival was not an opportunity I appreciated until I arrived. My expectations were low and gloomy (waking up at 4:45 wasn't exactly helpful). Yet, once I walked into that majestic building, my drama-mates next to me, I felt my excitement grow and my mood lifting (that could just be the coffee though). I have met so many creative people and seen so many wonderful shows, it was a perfect distraction from the pressure of Grade 11 and I find myself missing every minute of it. I hope the future drama students enjoy it as much as I did. - Megan Wyeth It was a great and really enjoyable experience where we got to work with "professionals". It was inspiring watching the performers and motivating and intriguing to hear what all the instructors had to say. - Amy Lee Cairns. This inspiring event will hopefully affect us for years to come. 5 Open Day 1 March 2016 On Tuesday we hosted our annual Open Day and it was a great success. Such is the interest among girls both locally and as far afield as Bergvliet, Hermanus and Caledon that we could barely accommodate all the girls and their parents in the Ebenezer Hall. With Woordfees on site in the Ebenezer Hall and the closing date for applications moved to 11 March 2016 by the Department of Education, Open Day presented us with a number of fresh challenges. Rhenishers, however, are always up to a challenge and TEAM RHENISH stepped up and excelled. We had the largest showing for Open Day thus far some 370 girls and their parents attended the event. Everyone who participated in the day did a brilliant job of marketing the Rhenish name the clubs, societies and sports who displayed in front of the hall, the speakers who addressed prospective girls and parents, the choir, orchestra and the marimba band. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we are confident that the Grade 7s are going to be applying in their droves to attend our school. A big thank you must go to the PTA mums for the catering at the end of the evening and for chatting to the prospective parents about Rhenish, to all staff members (teachers, non-educators and Mr Coetzee and his team) for working together to make this day a success. The LC and mentors also worked incredibly hard and everyone did a sterling job of showing the world the kind of young lady we produce and the kind of experience girls have at Rhenish. 6 Rhenishers Achieve Lifesaving Rhenisher, Cayla Johnson competed at the WC Stillwater Lifesaving Championships on Saturday 27 February She won 3 Silver medals and 1 Bronze medal. Ballet Chanté Daniels participated in the Ballet Olympics last week. Participants from sixteen countries were involved in the competition and the week ended with a gala performance at Arts Cape Theatre. The competition was very stiff and, of the 25 Competitors in her section (Junior girls ages 16-20), Chanté was placed in the final six. Among these six were 3 South Koreans and 3 South Africans (2 from Johannesburg and Chanté from Cape Town). Wakeboarding Megan Nel has just received a clothing and gear sponsorship from Mystic South Africa. Megan is Mystic s first wakeboarding team rider, their involvement prior to this has been in the kiteboarding scene. Squash Kirsten Marnewick and Mya Dalton will represent Boland at the squash SA Qualifiers Tournament in Johannesburg from March. Each province sends only their top 4 players to this tournament and consideration for placement in the top ten in the country is dependent on participation in this tournament. Congratulations and good luck, Kirsten and Mya. Karate Ashleigh Rosant will represent South Africa at the 18 th World Karate Championship in Potsdam, Germany, from July Representing one s country in one s chosen sport at the highest level is possibly the pinnacle of every sportsman s career and we are very proud of Ashleigh. Researcher Honoured with AU Science Prize One of the Rhenish family our Deputy Head Girl Okara Opara s father - has recently been honoured by the African Union. Rhenish would like to extend our congratulations to the family on this excellent achievement. The African Union (AU) has bestowed one of its highest scientific honours upon agricultural engineer and postharvest technology expert Prof Umezuruike Linus Opara. He received the AU Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Award for senior researchers at the annual African Union Summit in Ethiopia. Prof Opara, who hails from Nigeria, is the holder of the DSTNRF South African Research Chair in Postharvest Technology, and distinguished professor in the Department of Horticultural Science at SU. His multi-disciplinary research team is the leading group worldwide working on postharvest practices that improve the postharvest handling, packaging and marketing of pomegranate fruit.
