On Tuesday we spent a whole afternoon on fun science activities to celebrate British Science Week. The children presented their findings to everyone at the end of the day and these can be seen on display in the Hall. Today, our youngest children enjoyed showing off their water skills in the Aquasplash event. Photographs from both these events can be found in the newsletter. Next week I look forward to seeing you at our Red Nose Day extravaganza on Friday and our Early Years Mother s Day Tea. Have a lovely

2 In School SCIENCE AFTERNOON Tea cups and umbrellas provide for a very curious and uniquely British Science afternoon On Tuesday, pupils from Years 1 to 8 took part in a whole school science investigation. Each Year group focussed on a fun and thought-provoking investigation, putting their grey matter to the test! Whilst Year 1 & 2 investigated potential umbrella materials, Year 3 & 4 combined to test cans and see whether different contents affect how far each can would roll. Year 5, 6,7 & 8 were provided two posers; what is the perfect thickness of tomato sauce and which type of cup would be best to serve tea? To the former, the smell of weak tomato sauce lingered in the classroom for hours! During the event, class teachers were supported by Mrs Elford, our science specialist teacher, to ensure that the children not only have fun but also enjoy a valuable learning experience. Mrs Elford said: It was a very busy afternoon but lovely to see lots of science skills in action. At the end we all shared what we did and what we found out as well as all showing that we were super scientists who could use our skills to solve problems!

3 AQUASPLASH Children revel in fun swimming gala PERFORMANCE EVENING Save the date! Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 convened on Barrow Swimming Pool today for an afternoon of swimming-based fun at the annual Brookes Cambridge Aqua Splash event. With fun placed as the cornerstone of the event, the aim was to recognise and celebrate the skills pupils have learnt during their swimming lessons. The children were split into two groups, led by Specialist Sport Teacher Mr Ellis and Swimming Instructor Mrs Perry, and organised into their respective Houses. During the event, the children negotiated a number of events including Rise and Shine, Blowtastic and the On the back relay. Toward the end of the afternoon, the groups combined to take part in a House Paddle Steamer Relay. Mr Ellis said: It has been an absolute pleasure to see the children develop their confidence and competence in the water. Support the school and a worthwhile cause that benefits the entire community. All parents (and beyond!) are most welcome to attend our Performance Evening, which takes place on March 30 from 6pm, with all proceeds going toward a defibrillator for the school and our local villages. The automated external defibrillator (AED) is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can stop an irregular heart rhythm and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest. Tickets cost 7.50, which include entry and cheese and wine, and are on sale until Friday, March 24! Children attend free of charge. The event will provide a smörgåsbord of performances from across the school and promises to be a wonderful if not magical evening. 4 Makaton Mrs South was unable to attend the Aquasplash gala this afternoon, however she knew the children were all very excited. She would encourage your children to sign Swim when they talk of the day with you. Real Tennis World Champion tutors Specialist Teacher Swim Place our hands palm together in front of us and make breast stroke style movements, joining our palms at the front each time. Artist of the week Mr Ellis was invited to Newmarket Real Tennis Club to meet World Champion Claire Vigrass and enjoy an introductory lesson. Real tennis, occasionally called the sport of kings, is the original racquet sport from which the modern game of lawn tennis is derived and can trace its ancestry back to the 12th century. The game shares similarities with modern tennis and squash, with play taking place in a similar court setting yet can use the walls to serve and return, but has a more complex scoring structure and uses heavier tennis-like balls and a unique racquet shape. The artist of the week is Ava Slocum of Year 2, who produced a wonderful tulip painting. Mrs McGrath said of this rendering: This is a beautiful painting that shows fantastic observational skills. Miss Vigrass is regarded as the top rated female player in the world and was the youngest ever World Champion at the age of 19 years old. After the hour s introduction, Miss Vigrass was left impressed by Mr Ellis efforts and thought he had shown a natural talent for the game. Mr Ellis left the club excited by the prospect of introducing Real Tennis to Brookes Cambridge in the next academic year. Watch this space for more details.

5 Van Gogh provides food for inspiration SPORT AWESOME BROOKES TAKES THE SPOILS U13 Boys Hockey v Brandeston Hall Wednesday 8 March 2017 By Mr White Brookes Cambridge took part in what was described as a match to savour as they secured a memorable 2-1 victory against a strong Brandeston Hall team. EASTER SERVICE The annual Easter Service, will take place on Friday, March 31 at 8.50am. The Service, is for all children from Year 1 to Year 8. All parents are also most welcome to accompany their children. We would encourage parents to drop off their children at the church. Any pupils who require pre-care should be delivered to school and will be transported to the church via one of our buses. Butterflies children took artistic interpretation to new heights when they modelled Van Gogh s starry night in cake form. Critics described their endeavours as delicious. MOTHER S DAY TEA Caterpillars, Butterflies & Reception Classes are cordially invited to our Mother s Day Tea On Friday, March pm-4pm Please RSVP via the School Offce From the off, Brookes passion and commitment was paying dividends. Matthew was solid in defence and several other players supported him, including William, Luke and Nathan. Despite their best efforts Brandeston managed several shots at the goal although none looked like beating our keeper Patrick who was in superhuman form. Theo, James and Cameron played in midfield, however they battled up and down the field assisting with attacks and then defence. Christof was a man on a mission, picking up balls whilst defending, running most of the pitch and then passing a ball for Luke or James or Theo in the D. Christof continued to battle up and back and up and seemed always to have another gear to use when he needed it. His efforts paid off by scoring our first goal and James excellent positional sense meant he picked up a through ball and popped it in the goal for a second to Brookes. Brookes attacked in waves whilst Brandeston Hall had much less of the ball. However, when they did breach our defence their shots on goal were blistering. Thankfully, our super goalie kept all but one goal out. MVP s for this match: Christof for his tireless running and never give up attitude and Patrick who was simply awesome in goal.

6 Lost property FOOTBALL BOOTS These unique, blue Nike football boots have been missing since half-term and the owner would welcome any help in securing their return. They were labelled L.G. but this may have faded. Please contact Louis Garrick or Mr Ellis if you can provide assistance. SCHOOL COAT A school coat is missing and its return would be welcomed. Return of the Doctor Dr Pilsworth is to return to Brookes Cambridge next term. Lynn will ease back into life at the school, teaching IT with Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils for two afternoons a week over the Summer Term. We thoroughly look forward to seeing Dr Pilsworth on campus in the coming weeks.
