Dear Parents This week has seen some magniicent performances in drama, dance, music and speaking prose from our children. They have shown conidence and poise that you would expect to see in seasoned performers. In tandem with this they have also shown enjoyment, happiness and fun which is what learning is all about at Brookes Cambridge. A fantastic Performance Evening last night was followed by an extraordinary celebration of Shakespeare in our assembly this morning. A very special thank you must go to our drama specialist, Jonathan Woolfe, who in a very short period of time has ensured that our children make such outstanding progress in their drama work. I am very also very proud of all our children this week for their achievements in sport starting with the swimming gala on Monday and inishing off this afternoon with our fun packed Sports Relief event. We will let you know how much money the children made next week. Thank you to all parents for supporting your children whether cheering on at the gala, applauding at the performances or making healthy snacks for the fun run. Have a lovely weekend. This week Barn Owls have been celebrating Shakespeare Week by joining in a variety of activities all about the Bard.

2 In School Sport Relief Children brave the chill to have fun and raise money for worthy charity event. Year 1 & 2 The Barn Owls and The Bard Brookes Children learn about the games people used to play in Shakespearean times. Children sprint off as they take part in the annual Sports Relief fun run. This week Barn Owls have been celebrating Shakespeare Week by joining in a variety of activities all about the Bard. The week began with a visit from William Shakespeare, who was rather offended that many of them didn t know who he was! However, the children soon familiarised themselves with him, and have enjoyed painting his portrait in Art; creating their own Shakespearean compound words in English, and playing games such as Fox and Geese and Nine Men s Morris (two games a young Shakespeare might have enjoyed), not to mention learning all about the Bard s school life. Barn Owls are now proudly experts in the Bard! Today, we hosted a lively world of sporting fun, all in the name of Sport Relief. The afternoon featured fun run followed by a TRY-athlon where the children tried out three sports from around the world. Parents, family members and children braved the chilly weather and threw themselves with gusto into the event. The event was held as part of a national campaign to raise awareness and money to help vulnerable people in both the UK and the world s poorest countries. I am a irm believer that children taught with the right passion and inspiration can learn anything however tricky, remote or initially unpalatable.

Craft Club Craft Club children show off their terific tortoises This week craft club has completed their tortoises, fashioned through old English patchwork and over-stitching. Years 4-7 and Rowan from Year 3 tell of Shakespeare s genius to an appreciative audience This morning, I watched from the back of the main hall as children in Years 4,5,6,7 and Rowan from Year 3 performed an introduction to Shakespeare for parents, staff and the really young children who sat there remarkably still and attentive. I am a irm believer that children taught with the right passion and inspiration can learn anything however tricky, remote or initially unpalatable. Shakespeare is not meant to be read, or studied, or taken apart and analysed but to be performed. We should laugh as Malvolio wears his cross gartered yellow stockings and cry as Lear carries the dead Cordelia. In assembly the children dressed in their uniforms only and with a maximum of 45 minutes in a rehearsal managed to professionally get across some complicated language. They were able to recite from Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. They were able to say words such as Coriolanus without a slip of the tongue. They were - for the most part - still and listening to each other. The Club has worked on their tortoises throughout the term and are delighted with the results. FEES REMINDER Our fees will be grandfathered for our current parents and for those who join before September This means our fee structure for Years 1&2 and for Y3+ will remain constant (subject to cost of living increases). Makaton They have learned about iambic pentameter and women not being on the stage and slowly but surely they are gaining in conidence and are able to express themselves more fully. We are still at the very beginning and in the last two terms trust has been built up and the children - I hope - feel safe in drama. I have no doubt that in future years children from this wonderful school will be on the stages of the world such as the Globe and the Royal Shakespeare Company. If Mrs. Scott and I can do it - so can they. All the world s a stage, and all the men and women merely players says Jacques in As You Like It. Our children are not merely players - they are tomorrow s players. Sing As we ve had lots of excellent performances this week, we thought we d give you the sign for sing! With two ingers on the hand you write with, make swirling movements away from your mouth. You MUST speak the word as you sign!

4 In Sport STUNNING BROOKES DANCE PAST FAIRSTEAD U9 Football v Fairstead House Wednesday 9th March 2016 By Guest Reporter Thomas Millar The team travelled to play the irst U9 football match under the name Brookes Cambridge and the match was packed with goals. The game inished 1-10 to Brookes. This amazing score line was produced by stunning team work and some brilliant goals. Louis was a key defender and made some crucial tackles and was positive when in goal. Oscar was stunning on the ield and also had high spirit and made some great powerful runs down the wing. William was a strong defender and made some perfect tackles when Fairstead were on the break. Noah was a goal scoring machine scoring 6 goals! And charged at the goal from goalkeeper dancing past Fairsteads defence. Thomas was a great all round player skilling the defence and scoring three goals and assisting over players. Johnny was close to the playing style of Riyad Mahrez and scored one goal after hitting the post two times and also was man of the match! TRAINING PAYS DIVIDENDS FOR GIRLS HOCKEY TEAM Girls Hockey v Stoke College Wednesday 16th March 2016 By Mr Smith Stoke College girls hockey squad came to visit us on Wednesday, bringing a delightful group of 11 girls. Together with our squad we played a very good natured but competitive game of hockey on our grass, mixing the girls from both schools to produce a productive, instructive, end-to-end training session. Aimee again donned the keeper s kit, and although she was not under pressure for much of the irst half, when the attack did threaten her she made some very good, decisive saves. Beatrice and Leah defended in front of Aimee, and both of them are becoming really good tacklers and passers of the ball. Megan played a really strong midield role with Stella, always wanting to be in the middle of the action. Raphaella and Lauren played up front, Raphaella scoring again, and Lauren making some This week Brookes welcomed Stoke College and, from the whistle, started briskly, accelerating away from the line rapidly as Patrick Fisher Butler buried his chances to give Brookes a 2-0 lead. The mercurial striker dominated proceedings and really took the opposition to task throughout the game. Will Cameron also worked tirelessly in midield, getting his reward with another goal to add to his already impressive record for the year. Steeling themselves for the second half, Stoke came out ighting and forced the play deep into the Brookes half.. Cameron Taylor again glided effortlessly through the game making his presence felt in defence and midield, while Matthew Turner and Theo Fisher Butler martialled the defence with authority very good forward moves. Eloise and Philippa came on soon into their favourite positions as defenders. Both are learning fast and developing into reliable, focused players. My colleague and I gave all the girls some well-deserved praise at half time, pointing out some details of technique and positioning on the ield which they tried to put into practice during the second half. This was a more open period of play as a result, the tackling was even more effective and the play lowed even better. Eloise and Aimee swapped roles and Eloise made some very good saves indeed, taking good control of the goal area. Aimee played enthusiastically in midield and Megan battled hard and scored a good goal. The girls were generous in their comments to our visitors and were good hosts at the after-match tea. They are a happy, eager, welcoming squad, and a delight to coach. FISHER BUTLER BLITZ SINKS STOKE U11 Football v Stoke College Wednesday 16th March 2016 By Josh Golga through the match. Christof was majestic in goal, and Max Gough was unrelenting in a wide range of positions. William Gu s tough tackling in central midield played a big part in the team performance while Adam Harwood Hughes continued his good run of form and solidiied his position as a canny winger, delivering numerous raking crosses over the Stoke defence. The inal score ended up at 5-3 to Brookes with two more goals for Patrick Fisher Butler, and is yet another performance that the boys should all be proud of. With the inal game of the season against a tough Kings Ely side next week we hope to inish strongly and are looking forward to a well-deserved Easter break. 5 BROOKES HOCKEY TEAM WIN PLAUDITS Girls Hockey v Fairstead Hse Wednesday 9th March 2016 By Mr Smith BLUES VICTORIOUS IN HOTLY CONTESTED SWIM House wins by just one point to secure inaugural swimming gala spoils We were very lucky with the weather, since it had rained all morning. Our hockey pitch played very well, however. We had Aimee in goal, Raphaella and Lauren up front, Megan and Stella in midield and in defence we started with Philippa and Leah. We managed to start attacking from the very irst moment and with lots of pressure on their goal area we soon scored, with Raphaella putting the ball into the goal. The irst half continued with lots of movement, from end to end. The play was very even, with lots of very good tackling in both defence areas. Beatrice and Eloise took over in defence to give Philippa and Leah a few moments rest. Fairstead equalised and launched more attacks to go ahead 2-1 before half-time. There were some really tired girls on the pitch by this stage. In the second half we were able to spread out better, we tackled even harder, with sticks more on the ground, and we cleared the ball away from goal very well. Aimee made lots of really good saves. Thank you to the Parents Association for helping us to supply the new goalkeeping kit so quickly. Despite all our best efforts Fairstead squeezed a third goal in through the smallest gap in our goalmouth. I think we must have had all seven of our players there, helping Aimee at that point! The result, 1-3, did not relect the evenly matched teams at all, and the Brookes Cambridge team deserve lots of praise for the spirit and effort put into the match. Well done! Swimming Gala Monday 14th March 2016 By Mr Ellis This week, Brookes Cambridge held its irst Swimming Gala at Culford Pool. The poolside atmosphere was excellent with a large turnout of parents and the children very excited for their events. It was very pleasing to see the children really swimming to a high standard and showing real progress in their swimming techniques. The house races were very competitive with great support from children, parents and staff alike. The biggest cheers of the day were certainly in the motorbike house relay for Years 1 and 2 and for the Body Board house relays for the older children. In the house competition all children scored points for their respective houses. After 27 races it was amazingly close with Yellow house inishing third with 209 points, Green second with 247 and Blue winning overall just one point ahead with 248 points! Everyone seemed to enjoy the Gala and the children were very appreciative of the staff who oficiated the event. They gave a particular loud cheer for Mrs Celia Almond who coordinates the swimming teaching of our children and who did a huge amount of work in organising the Gala.
