1 OAKY DOAKY Issue 14: French Trip Earlier this week, some year 5 and 6 children went on an amazing trip to France to meet their pen pals and experience the French way of living. The students visited the town of Acheres, situated outside Paris. The pupils, who belong to Miss Renaudon s French club, met up early on the morning of Monday 23rd May (5:45am!) at Hillingdon station. They then journeyed to Kings Cross St Pancras International and boarded the Eurostar. The Eurostar arrived at Gare du Nord and the children were very excited to see the Eiffel Tower after travelling on the Metro. The fun wasn't over yet, as the pupils were about to meet their pen pals that they had communicated with via post! They got to know their penfriends as they boarded the coach to Acheres. They all went to a welcome dinner hosted by the town of Acheres. After their eventful day, the students were quite pleased to fall asleep in their host families peaceful abode. The second day was spent in our partner school, attending French lessons. All too soon, it was home time. The children spent time bonding with their host families and soon, tired out with the day s events, went to bed. The third day was the most action-packed as they explored Saint Germain en Laye. They were rewarded after their hectic trip with some Chez Mcdo (McDonalds). Thus the trip ended on a happy note. Many thanks to Miss Renaudon for organising such a wonderful experience. By Yousef and Lydia (year 5). Thank you so much for your support for Mercury s chosen charity, CLIC Sargent. It was fantastic to see so many children either wearing wigs or with crazy hairstyles for Wig Wednesday. There were some wonderfullyinventive hair styles on show! We really appreciate all of the generous donations that were sent in and a special thank you to those children and parents who donated cakes for our cake sale. In total we raised All proceeds will go towards supporting children, and young people, with cancer. Telephone: (01895) Website: office@oakfarm.hillingdon.sch.uk

3 BOROUGH CHAMPIONS! Following on from the success at last month s UDPSSA Tag Rugby tournament for children in Year 4 & 5, on Monday 16 th May we took two teams along to the Borough tournament. With 13 teams involved, it proved to be a busy afternoon with matches coming up thick and fast. In the group stages, both of our teams played some terrific rugby and our A team managed to finish on top of their group, having won 4 games and drawn the other. Our B team enjoyed similar success and, with a mix of wins and draws under their belts, they qualified for the semi-finals where they would line up against some familiar faces our A team! The semi-final match was very evenly played, particularly during the first half, and it was anyone s game. Eventually though, the A team eked out a sneaky win to qualify for the final where they would once again face Sacred Heart (the team that they d earlier drawn against). The final proved to be an exciting, nerve-wracking and physical affair with first one team scoring and then the other. After a short break for Shae to recover from a particularly nasty fall, the game drew closer to the final whistle. As the referee declared the last play, our opponents managed to sneak through our defence to score a try which brought the scores level. We knew whoever scored the next try would be the champions. Our players had the ball and shifted across the pitch from left to right, looking for the right gap, knowing that a mistake would be costly. As nerves heightened on the sidelines, we managed to find a way through and score that ever important try. The final whistle blew and we jumped up in celebration champions! Huge congratulations to all of our Year 4 and 5 tag-rugby competitors: Oak Farm A : Amelia, Corey, Shae, Chloe R, Amara, Max G, Namrah, Cai, Tristan, Yousef Oak Farm B : Chloe N, Daniel, Farhad, Jasmine, Lei, Nabil, Levi, Zaynab, Sana
4 Year 5 Football - Tournament Winners! On Wednesday, an Oak Farm team took part in the Year 5 PSD Cooper s Cup at Cowley St. Laurence Primary School. With fourteen teams entered, there were two groups of 7 teams, meaning plenty of matches for all of the schools. Our opening match against St. Helen s didn t start well, with a goal conceded within the opening minute. However, we came back strongly with three goals, two from Max and one from Harley, to win 3-1. Two more wins followed, with the goals being shared around; Corey, Tristan and Nabil joining Max and Harley on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Rowan, Levi and Bavanan were keeping the opposition at bay, with some brilliant defending. After a narrow defeat against St. Mary s and a draw with Heathrow, we completed our group matches with an excellent 2-0 victory against Cowley St. Laurence, to progress to the semi-finals as group winners. In the semi-final, we came up against a stubborn St. Catherine s team. Despite almost constant pressure, we were unable to score the crucial goal, meaning the game went to sudden-death penalties. Jay, our goalkeeper, proved to be the hero with a fine save and when Nabil, our captain, buried his penalty, we had made the final. The final, against St. Matthew s, was a very competitive, hard-fought game. Once again, we were well on top but some fine goalkeeping preventing us from scoring. However, with time ticking down, we won a free kick out wide. Nabil stepped up and, with a fierce drive, gave the opposition goalkeeper no chance. It was a goal worthy of winning any match and a fantastic way to win the tournament! Huge congratulations to all of our players, who represented the school superbly. A special mention also to Harley who we were delighted to see named Player of the Tournament. Thank you also to our wonderful supporters - it was lovely to see so many of you supporting our side. Team: Jay, Rowan, Levi, Bavanan, Nabil, Corey, Max, Tristan and Harley
5 Quad Kids Athletics Some of our best athletes from Years 5 and 6 took part in the Borough Quad Kids competition at the Uxbridge athletics track last week. Each team member took part in four events: a 75m sprint, the 600m, standing long jump and Vortex Howler throw. The times and distances recorded, equated to points with the scores combining to create an overall team score. All of our team performed extremely well, with some fine efforts in the 600m in particular. Although we didn t finish in the top three, we were very proud of our team s efforts in what was a very close competition. A special mention goes to Shauna, in year 6, who amassed the most points by any of the female competitors in the competition; well done! Well done to all of our team: Zachary, Stanley, Tristan, Max, Nabil, Tino, Shauna, Kimi and Oshi. Congratulations... to all the children that took part in the Instrumental evening last week, either playing, singing and, in some cases, both! The children feel very proud of their performances as we hope you do too! Choir were also amazing the following day at the Ruislip Barn where they spent the afternoon rehearsing and then performing in the evening with other local schools and the RAF Northolt band. Members of the local borough council and officials within the RAF were there as guests and paid many compliments about our children, not only with regard to their performance but also the standard of behaviour during a tiring day Outstanding! Please if you have any photos or videos of either event, and you would be happy to share, then could you send them to the following address; kstonely@oakfarm.hillingdon.sch.uk I would like to create a display to showcase the children s hard work. Thank you!
