1 Bowls Bay of Plenty Newsletter Bay Bowler President s Message January/February 2014 Greetings to you all. I hope you have managed to cope with the weather, heat and all the "bowls" over the last 6 weeks. For some of us life has been fairly hectic - so much for a quiet retirement! Inside this issue: President s Message 1 & 2 Once again the Board extends its thanks to the Bowling Clubs and all those people involved in preparing and controlling the Centre events. The success of these events is driven by our volunteers who manage the programmes, maintain the greens to a high standard, umpire and undertake catering duties. All give their time and energy to assist Bowlers, Clubs, and the Centre, and their input is greatly appreciated. Having said all that, it is perhaps timely to encourage Bowlers to put their hands up and offer to assist the Centre Board in Controlling the Centre Events. I am sure we have a pool of very talented people who, through various reasons, can no longer complete at the higher level or take part in the events, but could assist by 'controlling'. If you feel you have the experience and time - please contact the Centre Secretary - Stu Robertson. I understand that some are already assisting where they are able and we value their contribution. Speaking from experience I know that in the EBOP I can call on 2 very capable people who always assist in our area - but we need more in every region. I extend to the
2 Page 2 Bay Bowler Coaches, Robyn Davis and Matt Mortensen, everyone's appreciation and sincere thanks for their efforts and time involved in coaching and mentoring our newer Bowlers. I must also mention how gratifying it was to see the 'Junior Bowlers' from all teams trying very hard, obviously enjoying their bowls, and showing encouragement and respect for great bowls and efforts - no matter which team or bowler they came from. Very competitive - but very enjoyable and friendly, just as it should be! As a side issue - who paid the "streaker" to run across the ladies' green to put our opposition off? A very sneaky move, but I hope it wasn't paid for out of Board funds! The Representative Team travelling to Wellington to compete in the Bowls NZ InterCentre Event for 2014 has been named and you will see this further on in the Newsletter, along with the Team competing in the Zone 2 Development Squad Event. Congratulations to all those bowlers who have been selected to represent us. I will be travelling with the Team to Wellington and I have to say that for me personally it is a privilege to travel with such a committed and talented Team of bowlers and Administrators. I will however draw the line at "streaking" as part of a team plan! Bowls BOP is fortunate to have some very talented young Bowlers in the BOP - namely Talor Duncan who has made the U18 Trans Tasman Team, competing in the Triples and the Fours. Stefan McCartain and Nathan Arlidge from Gate Pa Bowling Club will be competing in the Under 20 Kitty Hawk National Tournament. Congratulations and Good Luck to you all. Good Bowling over the next few weeks Cheers Annette CLOTHING ON GREENS We wish to remind all players that the conditions of play for all Bay of Plenty Events states that Players in a side or team will be identically attired. Logos that conflict with the event sponsor will not be permitted A number of clubs have become very lax in their uniforms with players wearing different coloured shirts and trousers in the same side or team. FOOTWEAR ON GREENS The Bay of Plenty Greenkeeping Association have requested Bay of Plenty Bowls to make all players aware of the types of footwear that are acceptable on the greens. Footwear must be flat soled and the average sport shoe with an instep are not suitable and will not be tolerated on the greens by the Greenkeepers. The Association asks that players ensure that the footwear used on the greens does comply with the current Laws.

9 January / February 2014 Page 9 Junior Rep Squad Bowls Training Can be Fun... This season the Junior Rep. Squads have been meeting monthly to develop their skills and enthusiasm for the sport. Our last Training was an Evening affair at Bowls Tauranga South. It started at 5.00pm and the weather was being kind to us for a while. We set the green up with various heads laid out and asked the players how they would solve the problem shown to them. At each of the six rinks we had asked some of the Bays skilled skips male and female to take one head each and explain the situation to the teams of bowlers, what options did they have and how would they solve the problem and why did they make that choice. Each player was asked their opinion and guidance was given by the skilled skips what to look for and how to get the best result. Then we went inside and had Steve Beel discuss with the players what was expected of them and how to they go about achieving the best results for their bowls and the various methods of playing shots. This was followed by a short game of bowls while the meat was being cooked on the BBQ and the salads made and it was a short game because it started to rain. Special thanks go to all the bowlers who helped to make the evening interesting and thank you Steve for also assisting us but extra special thanks go to the team of expert cooks who presented us all with a top notch meal. Everyone enjoyed socializing and getting to know each other at the end of the day and this is an important part of team building. We are having our next training also in the evening although we are not having a BBQ our selector and her assistants have an interesting evening planned for the people that attend. It will prepare them for the next Rep game. Robyn Davis and her Team WINNERS OF THE GEDDES TROPHY 2013/14
