1 FROM THE PRESIDENT Another fantastic fortnight included all 4 teams winning as well as some more great news to Highett West Cricket Club. Tony Corr was recently rewarded by Cricket Victoria for 50 years of outstanding services to cricket. Other clubs may have their stories (and some won t), but we have ours and it was extremely gratifying as a life-long member of the Highett West family to see Tony recognised by the wider cricketing community. Tony attended a function at the MCG yesterday to receive his due recognition and, as always, was supported by his lovely wife Frances. Following this newsletter is a reminder of what Tony has done in his time as the greatest figure in our club s history. Once again the club continues to experience more success on-field. As mentioned earlier, we had 4 wins last round including a forfeit result for the 3 rds. Last weekend couldn t have started any better than our T20 Blast team having their first win of the season. Full credit must go to Sean, the parents, but most importantly to the players themselves. They ve been working extremely hard and deserved this result. No doubt the first of many in what we hope is an exciting journey for these young cricketers. We have also welcomed back to Highett West Aidan Holland and Rioghan Rodrigues whom both played in the T20 Blast success on Saturday. Whilst we have gained in the T20 Blast, sadly we lose Ewan & Maggie Harrison from the In2Cricket until the New Year as they head to the UK & Europe for a family holiday. Their father, Peter, has been a great asset to our sessions taking charge of activities and assisting Michael Pavlich. He kindly nominated Paul Hillman to fill the void; however, Paul himself has already been one of the many dads that have embraced these sessions as active participants. We wish the Harrison family all the best on their holiday. Whilst on our junior cricketers, congratulations to Declan Adams who has been selected to play Hatch Shield cricket with Brighton. Hatch Shield is U/15 representative cricket and the first major milestone in junior cricket beyond our Association representative teams. Declan has been an outstanding cricketer at Senior level representing Highett West and we look forward hearing about more success as he continues to excel in the junior ranks. Don t forget we have a big night on Saturday with our Trivia Night. It s been a pet project for Ned & Kristen who have done an outstanding job and have been ably supported by the social team. A reminder too, that our social memberships are still on sale. 53 members in 53 years is in sight, but we need you to jump on board to receive your Burra Brigade cap, membership card containing 1 st XI fixture, personalised stubby holder and a bottle opener key ring. Of course you also receive one standard drink every Saturday afternoon as well as entry to one club function (Trivia Night included!) of choice (Presentation Night not included). Finally, I d like to extend our thoughts and well wishes to fellow committeeman Avi Wekselman and his family as they deal with the unfortunate news of Avi s father having to once again battle through a cancer which has returned. We hope he continues to show the fighting spirit that saw him through the first time and look forward to hearing the good news of his triumphant return to good health. Michael Flahive President

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY Saturday, December 20 th FLYER BELOW Round 4 HWCC vs Bentleigh Uniting CC; Quiney Shield Week 9 of the season saw the 1st XI facing off against Bentleigh Uniting and the boys were very keen to bounce back from their first loss the week prior. It wasn't the ideal start to the day with skipper Jiggy Jasani losing the toss (again) and the opposition sending us into the field. As it turned out, this worked to our advantage as Jig soon bowled their opener for a single run in the fourth over after some tight bowling from both ends. Runs were hard to come by and LBW shouts were aplenty when the Pres caught the other opener in front for 10 to have the score 2/17 after 11 overs. Disciplined bowling continued but wasn't backed up in the field with a number of chances going to ground (most off Jig), but we kept our heads up and runs were still tight. This was clearly creating frustration in the opposition captain when he took offence to the amount of plumb LBW's he was getting away with and snapped that the old Crowbar was washed up and past it. Flahive smugly responded by sending his castle flying and two balls later hitting the pads, sending the number 5 back for a duck. 4/30 and we were right on top. This brought an ex-afl footballer to the crease and in Mick's next over he smashed an outswinger over the top for 4 before promptly learning that they go both ways when his middle peg was cartwheeling out behind him. The biggest partnership of the day so far (17) followed with a young kid playing some nice drives before his partner nicked one to Winton, giving the Pres his fifth wicket of the day and the Units a lot to think about at 6/55 from just 23 overs. I came into the attack in the 28th with immediate effect, squaring up the kid with a fierce cutter before a loose delivery next ball saw a loose shot edged straight to Winnie. At 1/1, that's probably where my spell should have ended, with my next six overs going for 32 and the score getting away from us despite Robbie's tight spell at the other end. The batsmen put on 72 in 22 overs before Sash was able to break the partnership, bowling the slogger for a 37 that included a lot of across the line shots and plenty of very slow singles. After three unsuccessful

overs at the new batsman, Jig finally gave up the ball back to Flahive who took the last two wickets in as many overs to finish them off, all out for 168.

Never an easy task for the openers and unfortunately this was proven when OB1 copped a jaffer and edged to 3 rd slip in the second over to leave us 1/1 overnight.

Despite this setback we were all confident that we would chase it down. We began well on day 2 with Ned and Itchy forming a solid partnership, waiting for the right ball and ticking it over in the meantime to take us to 1/56 at the first drinks break. We lost Itch a few overs later for a beautifully crafted 41, bringing Sash to the crease where he looked right at home. With a solid platform to build from, he and Ned put their woes between the wickets behind them as they ran a number of 2s and 3s in a 30 over stand. They saw us to a comfortable 3/125 when Ned tried to turn one too square off the spinner and popped it up for a great knock of 46 from a whopping 53 overs. Sash took his next over for 14 before Winton 'just missed one' at the other end to be knocked over for 1. Sash was caught next over to be out for 44 which saw two old ducks in Az Hammond and Mick Flahive combine in the middle. There were ten overs to go, 26 runs to get, and all of a sudden it was looking closer than we would have liked. The two experienced heads soon showed why we had nothing to worry about as they took every opportunity to sneak a run, including a couple of overthrows which demoralised the opposition, before Azza smashed a 6 then a 4 to finish it off with 4.4 overs to spare. All in all it was a solid all round batting performance to back up Flahive's efforts with the ball the week before. It sees us to 4-1 and top of the table, if only on percentage. The real test lies ahead with the next three fixtures against other teams on 4 wins and lots of improvement still to be found. The opening partnership of Paul Mullenger and Ryan Bradbury again started off well before the first wicket fell in the 16 th over when Paul was run out with the score on 34. At tea we found ourselves in a trouble at 5/97, but to the lads credit we fought back through the skilful batting of our acting captain, Ted Deal (27), and Brendan Streager (25) both were able to add quick runs before Teddy was stumped. Enter Mark Theobald, whose innings got the lower order going with nice stroke play and along with Brenden s job was to bat time as we didn t want to lose all 10 wickets and not see out the full 65 overs. The two batted out 10 overs and were able to add 40 valuable runs. The aim for the rest of the lower order was to bat normally until the last two overs which we did to the boy s credit. Shannon and I managed to put on a few late runs and saw the boys reach the full 65 overs with a very competitive 10/195 with my wicket falling on the last ball. The second week saw the boys really excited we had runs on the board and knew we had a strong bowling line-up to defend the runs. The day started well as ted opened with himself and Shannon. They both bowled tight and in the fifth over Shannon had the batsmen defending with the ball bouncing of the bat and rolling onto the stumps. After the drinks interval we claimed steady wickets with Avi and myself taking 6 wickets in the space of 12 overs. Avi bowled a very tight line and put the pressure on the batsmen which allowed me to take a few wickets in consecutive overs and also calming a few for himself. The boys struggled after tea with Oakleigh making a fight back with a partnership of 64 runs for the ninth wicket which was broken only because of some excellent fielding by Avi who through down the non-strikers stumps from deep cover which gave us the breakthrough we were after. Soon after, Mark took his first wicket for the day bowling the number 11 batsman to giving us the win by only 15 runs. This win puts the 2s in a very strong position giving Oakleigh their first loss and we are now sitting in 4 th at 4-1 as we sit clear of the rest of the competition by 2 wins.
