4 The hot weather last Sunday did not deter the social bowlers at the club MDSRC Christmas social. About 40 members attended this social day. After another busy year of running their many and varied sport and recreational activities, members took some time out to play social bowls together, catch up over a cold beer and enjoy some fun at the Maleny Bowls Club. Maleny District Sport & Recreation members had a great afternoon of social bowls, hosted by Maleny Bowls Club, who also served a barbeque tea. Thanks to cooks Ian and Curly and manager Peter for their hospitality. It proved to be a wonderfully relaxing venue for the occasion, with many bowling styles on display. President Mike had the right hat on, the ladies looked as if they knew what they were doing, even local MP Andrew Powell found himself in a team, sending down a Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc You kn ow what they say about Christmas parties Don t let your hair down too far - but some always do.. few passable bowls. club invite MDSARC Inc members to enjoy the facilities of the bowls club. Marie Gilliland of Cambroon was the lucky winner of this family heirloom, buying her raffle ticket from the Sommers Witta Fuel Depot. MDSRC thanks everyone who supported the club by purchasing a ticket, raising more than $1,200 towards plans for the joint sporting club house on the Maleny Precinct. MSRC wishes all members and their families a very merry Christmas break and looks forward to another great year of local sport and recreational events ahead in Members of the Maleny Bowls Marie Sommers clearly has the knack of selling winning raffle tickets to motorists who fill up at Sommer s Fuel Witta. She recently sold the ticket in the School Chaplaincy raffle for a $2,000 diamond to Glen & June Norris and the winner last Sunday of the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club s hand made quilt was Marie Gilliland, Cambroon, who also purchased her ticket from Marie. 6 Maleny Redbacks 5th Division side continued their strong form with a comprehensive win over Coolum at the Aub Cork Oval last Saturday. Winning the toss, Coolum batted first making their intentions clear form the start attempting to smack the Maleny openers all over the park, but were unsuccessful with Jason Brittle (3 for 17 off 8) bowling a tight line to have the visitors 4 for 60 at the first drinks break. Whittaker Enquiries to Jeff Margetts Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Maleny Redback Cricket 5th triumph over Coolum Coolum then attempted to regroup and bat showing more respect to the bowling, but a good spell from Ben Newman (3 for 49) in the middle of the Coolum innings had them struggling to post a defendable score. The Redbacks continued to mount pressure through good bowling from Moacyr Lima (1 for 33) and spin whiz Geoff Anthony (2 for 4) to have the opposition all out for 159 in the 35th over. Chasing only four runs an over to win the Maleny Redbacks could have batted conservatively and ground out a win, but in true Maleny style aggressive batting was the order of the day. For all enquiries and requests for bridge partners please contact Margaret Robinson on New opener Todd English got the innings of to a thumping start smashing his way to 42 runs including 9 boundaries. With a mini collapse the Redbacks middle order was then left in the hands of Moacyr Lima who showed tremendous determination and grit in his hour long stint in the middle against some hostile bowling from the Coolum attack to set the boys up for a quickfire finish. Chasing the bonus points on offer captain Ray Farrell (17 not out) and Geoff Anthony (38 not out) played some classic cricket strokes to take the Redbacks to an emphatic victory in the 30th over. The Kelshane Transport man of the match went to Geoff Anthony for a great all round performance. The Maleny boys travel to Palmwoods next week to play in the highly anticipated 20/20 series.
7 Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Ever heard of the Puddle Plaque or The Duck Cup? If you were asked to come and be part of an afternoon s polo in Maleny, where would you go? After all, polo is traditionally considered to be a rich man s sport, played on a field that is around 270 metres long and 180 metres wide! Now, whilst there are plenty of rich folk in the hinterland, there are no sporting facilities of that size. So what is this all about? As always, it began with someone s passion. Well known Maleny Lighthorse Commander Joe Colreavy also has a passion for polo, in his youth playing against many recognised polo identities, including Kerry Packer. For the last few years Joe (and a few other horsey folk around Maleny) have been playing with the closest official club to Maleny, Gympie Polo Club. Prior to this, riders were playing polo at Joe s Puddleduck Farm property, on Stanley River Road. A couple of weeks ago, Joe s mate and fellow horseman Peter Thompson asked if he could bring some friends over to watch. Not only did Joe say yes, but felt spurred on to organise an official tournament, to see what sort of a response there might be. Photo by STEVEN PILCHER It was a resounding success, with around 60 people watching from a fantastic vantage point, on a hill, overlooking the irregularly shaped field, with no lines and 4 bendy posts as goal posts. The players only rode one horse and played intermittent chuckas - similar to what happens in Polo-crosse. The morning heat and afternoon rain did not deter this inaugural Polo Championships, the rain cooling the day off for visitors, players and horses alike. The 4 teams of 3 aside played for 2 trophies: The Puddle Plaque & The Duck Cup. Apart from the obvious enjoyment and outstanding entertainment, there were aspects not lost on players and attendees alike. The field size and shape had absolutely no bearing on spectator (and player) enjoyment and it was not played by swashbuckling millionaires but by men and women of varying ages, ability (and wealth!) Several of the players were only beginner riders and one natural left hander even played right handed because you can t play left handed polo. So look out Jamie Packer this is a game that anyone interested can get involved in, as a player or spectator, right here in Maleny; well done Joe. Look out for the next competition all enquiries to Peter, tjuringa@bigpond.com What do you know about local council community grants? Sunshine Coastv Regional Council will consider applications for minor grants up to $2,000 on a twomonthly basis. Community organisations will be eligible for a maximum of $2,000 per financial year. The next date for grant consideration will be January 15th Applicants should meet at least one of the priorities listed in the funding categories section below. An organisation applying for a grant must; operate within the Sunshine Coast region or be able to demonstrate that the project will benefit residents of the Sunshine Coast, be a not-for-profit legal entity, have appropriate insurance and adhere to sound workplace health and safety practices, have met all acquittal conditions of previous council grants and have no debt to council, be able to demonstrate its financial viability, address specific category priorities, include required supporting documentation. Does your organisation meet the requirements and do es it need some assistance from Council?

Maleny Redbacks Thirds sink the Swans The Hotel Maleny Redbacks 3rd Division cricket team returned to its winning form with a hard fought victory over the Maroochydore Swans at Yandina on Saturday. Batting first on a moist wicket the Redbacks were eager to get the run rate up, however the continuous loss of wickets did not aide this cause. Many Maleny batsmen got off to a start but couldn t capitalise. Captain Tim Cork hung in while the wickets fell around him to score an impressive 42 not out. At 8 for 97 the Redbacks looked destined for a low score, but tailenders Ben Newsham (14) and James Sommer (10) combined with Cork in valuable partnerships to increase the total to a competitive 140. The Redbacks entered the field knowing tight bowling and fielding was the order of the day. Krishna Alister didn t disappoint with a motivating spell of 1 for 17 off 8. At the other end, fellow opener Alister Baker bamboozled the opposition with a couple of overs of spin, before Jake Heading took over claiming 3 for 25 off 6. The Redbacks dried up the runs in the middle overs, via Sam Wilson (1 for 14 off 5), Greg Corkin (1 for 10 off 5) and a Ryan Cosgrove runout, before Tim Cork (1 for 17 off 3) and Alister Baker (2 for 13 off 4) bowling pace this time, wrap up the tail and victory to have Maroochydore all out for 124. The Redbacks next game is against the top the table Yandina in a one day match at the Maleny Showgrounds. Captain Tim Cork s top form
9 Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Maleny Redbacks U16 v s Maroochydore Blue The Maleny Redbacks Under 16 side again put on an impressive display of quality cricket against Maroochydore Blue at the Dave Hankinson Oval over the past two Saturdays. Winning the toss on an excellently prepared pitch, Maleny captain Harrison Canton had no hesitation in batting first, but the Maroochy boys were jubilant after just two overs having the locals 2/1. Up stepped, Nick Selman and George Newman who were not going to be intimidated by the fired up visitor bowling attack, showing great determination to turn the game in Maleny s favour at the main drinks break with the score being 2 for 121. Nick and George continued their display of chanceless batting after drinks with Nick eventually being forced to retire at 75 and George falling perilously close to his half century on 47. With twenty overs to go the Redbacks picked up the pace with all Anyone for social tennis... Maleny Tennis Club Monday 6.00 pm pm Tuesday 1.30 pm pm Saturday 1.30 pm pm Sunday 1.30 pm pm Contact Sylvia or Terry Harker for fees rounder Ben Wilkinson scoring a quick fire 40. Nick returned with 2 overs remaining attempting to reach his century however he fell short, being caught out for 90. The Redbacks posted an imposing 243 off their 60 overs. Maroochydore started their innings solidly with a 70 run second wicket partnership, but some tremendous off stump bowling from Ben Wilkinson (3 for17 off 12) and Dan Hand (1 for 20 off 10) hampered the visitors scoring efforts. Once the opposition top order was broken through the Redbacks bowling attack was relentless as all the boys bowled a tight lines offering few scoring opportunities. Cleaning up the tail were Dylan Davies (2 for 14 off 7) and Ben Edwards (2 for 8 off 4) having the Maroochy side all out in the 52nd over for 149. The Redback boys put in an outstanding all round display of cricket. They now play Glasshouse this weekend in a one dayer at Maleny.
