2 The President s Bat Welcome back to the second half of our season and a Happy New Year to you all. We have had quite a few new players signing up as a result of the interest in cricket. Our registrar, John Murray, has been busy signing up new players over the past few weeks and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all those players and their families to the Hawks. Many of our boys are now playing for their respective schools and we all wish them well and hope to have them back later in the year at the start of the 2017/2018 season. Over Christmas many of our players represented Brisbane North in various carnivals throughout the state. I am sure the boys enjoyed that experience and are able to bring back some of the skills they learnt to their club sides. The Hawks hosted the Ian Healy Cup again this year. I would like to acknowledge the help given by the Cook family. Peter and his two boys Matthew and Tim were there each day. My wife Kathy was once again very busy organizing lunches and completing the statistics for all of the matches. Brisbane North have received many favourable compliments on the running of the carnival from all over Brisbane and as far north as Cairns. This year the Hawks are happy to be involved in the McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps Day. We will be concentrating on the Friday night cricket for our U8 /U9 players but ask that you keep an eye out for Flyers in this edition of the Hawk Talk for further details. Thank you to our three local politicians Tim Mander, Mike Charlton and Nikki Boyd who made generous donations towards our raffle prizes. Last year the club collected over $3000 so let s hope for a similar result this year. Search through your wardrobes guys for all the PINK gear. The construction of the new club house at South Pine is just about completed. We also finished the construction of our new Nest just prior to Xmas and it has already proved very popular. For our Friday night competition we are again using the ACE Netball club toilets. This is much appreciated. Enjoy the remaining part of your season. Steve Casey

We bowled and caught well to never let our opponents get in whilst batting. Their scoring was rather slow on the dry outfield, and we continued to take regular wickets. Nathan Brown bowled fast, and had our opponents questioning whether he should be playing in our grade. Dan Brown bowled his offies nicely into the wind and was well rewarded for his efforts. The wind played quite a part, with us giving away far too many extras, in fact there were 30 in total, and I believe this to be the difference between the sides on the day. Chasing 137 for victory, we were confident to chase down the runs. We also had to do it without our star, Andrew Beighton. After losing Corie early, a couple of run partnerships formed. At the 20 over mark, Col was dismissed for 44, and we were 4/82. That left 55 runs, in 15 overs, with 6 wickets in hand. Dan Brown toiled away, but the rest of the middle order failed to provide him with the support he needed. Nathan Brown swung hard at the end, getting us to within a whisker, but a run out on the final ball saw us end just one run short. Overall, it was a good game, but was a shame to end up on the wrong side of the result. Corie went early after the dragging us out of the heap we were in last week in a partnership of 55 with Kyle. Kyle continued on looking good, to eventually go for 38. Sam and Jack put together a partnership of 36, and then we welcomed a couple of new duck medallion holders. Logan joined Sam at the crease with 20 to go for the last wicket, but Sam was unfortunately given out LBW and we were 9 short. When we came to field in the second innings, it wasn't pretty. The opposition had many partnerships of between 20 and 40, and we were just not able to break through regularly enough. We bowled well, but the opposition was patient and guarded. Catching wasn't up to the normal standard, and there were probably 5 catches that went down. Danny Brown's bowling has been the light of this game. Dan bowled very well, flighting the ball well up to entice the batsmen, and was well rewarded with 6 wickets for the match. Casey was involved in one of them that was an interesting dismissal. The batsman swung hard at the ball, nicking it before his bat slipped out of his hands and flew over his shoulder towards slip. The ball bounced off Casey's gloves, popping up back over the stumps. Casey dived around the stumps to take the ball inches off the ground. Confusion reigned, before the batsman was eventually given out caught. All in all, not a great game for us. Maybe a bit of a Christmas hang over, or maybe it was the heat the game was played in, but definitely we were all not at our best. Whilst the loss is bad, it was probably the best time to lose as our opposition games were restricted Captain / Manager: Colin Otto

GAME REPORT: The Green Hawks scored their second win this week to mark a bright return after the Xmas break. The team was joined by Jake Brind who was playing his first game. The Green Hawks bowled first and bowled well for the first week back with Ansh Gidh bowling 1/3, Hudson Morley with 1/7 and Dan Marsh with 0/4. Hudson s wicket was his first for the season and was evidence of the improvement he s made. The boys were sharp in the field, enthusiastic after the break and desperate not to give away an runs. Batting second the Green Hawks started strongly with Hayden (23) hitting 5 boundaries and well supported by Ansh (13), Danny (13) and Jake (14) who was playing in his debut game. Kohen and Hudson ran well between the wickets with some good clear loud calling. Three players received encouragement awards, Ansh Gidh, Jake Brind and James Bigault who filled in for the Red Hawks and played with real commitment. Hamish / Darren

GAME REPORT: What a way to return from holidays! You can see the effort that the boys have made over the holidays with some lovely straight drives. The enthusiasm shown by the team was excellent. Special thanks to Jayden who helped out Pine Rivers and made a game of it. Thanks to our supporters who braved the drizzle, and ensured the boys had a good time. The boys fielded well and took their chances well. Bowling was mixed and no doubt will pick up for the next game as they find their feet again after the Xmas break. GAME REPORT: A closer game than the score indicates with Jack (35) and Angus (25) setting up the win with a good start to the innings and then hanging on with an even contribution. A lot of wides from the opposition made it frustrating for some of the boys as scoring proved a bit tough when they didn t get much to hit. Mark Durkin UNDER 10 WHITE HAWKS 28/01/ st Inn Albany Creek Vs Toombul Silver Batting: Haydn 32 Sean Van Breda 31 Henry Patrick 28 Bowling: JACK MEEHAN 5/7 Haydn 2/5 GAME REPORT: Great first week back after holidays, everyone was keen to start and have a great game. Welcome back Haydn scoring an awesome 32 run in his first game back after a year off. Sean also had a great game scoring 31 runs. We also had some great bowling from Jack. Well done to everyone for playing hard because it was HOT out there. Heather Toye / Vanessa Patrick

We had three new players in our team this season with all three immediately part of the team and all three having excellent performances with our latest arrival Jacob (who was not even able to attend the practice game) ending the day as player of the match with 20 runs, one wicket for 13 runs and one run out. GAME REPORT: Coming back from the holiday break an undermanned Hawks put in a good performance narrowly going down to Sandgate Redcliffe by 4 runs. After being sent in on a slow outfield the Hawks did well to get to 6/93 at the end of their innings with Thomas Lawrence and Flynn Frederickson top scoring with the bat. With the ball, the Hawks got off a to strong start with two early wickets and while they outscored their opponents off the bat, wides ended up costing the Hawks with Sandgate Redcliffe getting up in the last over. After 26 overs the opposition posted a respectable total of 117, setting the Eagle Hawks a required run rate of 4.5 runs per over. The opposition bowling attack came out fighting resulting in an Eagle Hawk batting collapse all out for 24 runs after 12 overs. Adam Basson top scored with 6 runs. Better luck next week! Our opposition bowled well again, and our scoring was relatively slow. After the 95 run opening stand from Col and Andrew, we lost a couple of quick ones, but Corie came to the crease and settled things down with a partnership of 44 with Col. Casey and Jack had a partnership of 30. We declared at tea, after Nathan did some quick blasting in the final couple of overs before tea. That left us 35 overs to bowl them out, and we were confident. Their opener came out firing, taking to Logan, and showing intent that they were going to try to chase the total, GAME ON. Logan produced a beauty that swung away, and crunched the off peg to get rid of the big hitter, and from there on, they pretty well gave up on the chase. We took wickets regularly, and at the drinks break, had them 4 down. With 17 overs to go, we were still feeling good about it. Sam got one soon after, and then Danny came on and did a real number on them, taking his 3/5. It should have been 4-for for Danny, as Col took a caught behind, but the old umpires hearing aide battery had run out 2 overs earlier, and he couldn't hear the thunderous edge. After Col cleaned the splinters out of the ball, we pushed hard, but just couldn't get the last 2 wickets, ending the game in a draw. Captain / Manager: Colin Otto DRAW

Runouts were Nicholas Lawrence (2), Kyan Lloyd (1), Jack O'Sullivan (1) and Mitchell Ring (1). GAME REPORT: A warm dry night set the tone for a great game between the White Hawks and the new team, Blue Hawks. The White s put on their highest total this year with a fantastic 40 from the man of the match, Jack O Sullivan. His innings was compiled of two 6 s and six 4 s. Wonderful effort by the Blue Hawks was recognised even though it was their second only game of the season. GAME REPORT: The Green Hawks scored a comprehensive win this, their third of the season. The Green Hawks bowled first with good pressure in the field contained the Grey Hawks with Jake Brind bowling 1/2, James Bigault with 1/5 and Ansh Gidh with 1/10. The boys maintained pressure in the field which resulted in a number of run-outs, including a couple of missed opportunities, as well as a catch for Jake Brind. Batting second the Green Hawks batted strongly with Ansh top scoring with 36, hitting 7 boundaries and a six. The run scoring continue with Hayden on 31 (including two sixes), Danny scoring 29 and Jake 28. The Green Hawks were fortunate to only have two run-outs against them, with running between wickets an area for improvement in coming weeks. Hamish / Darren

Great bowling by Tom kept us in the hunt. GAME REPORT: A good effort all round from the boys, some great fielding but also some very good cricket shots. Marley and Jett showed some good athletic skills with some good run outs, supporting a good bowling effort. Tight bowling kept our batsmen quieter than normal, but some good strokes played. Valley Blue s total was reduced to 89. When it came to the Pink Hawks time to bat, plenty of players chimed in with some fours and a huge six by Ashley who top scored with 22 (without getting out once), however the score of 103 runs was just short of a victory. Valley Blue managed to get 6 outs reducing the net score to 88. The pink hawks lost by just one run! Jose Pais

A bit more concentration out in the field was needed, however - Ram took a great catch on the boundary, Elijah was close to a wicket hat-trick, and Will had a caught and bowled. Captain was Zachary and Man of the Match was Kye. Angus topped the scoring with some clean hitting (34) supported well by Riley (27) and Darcey and Jack (25). A close contest but the boys bowled well to defend their total. Mark Durkin

Players batted really well, with specific notice of Harvey hitting a six from the first ball he faced. Unfortunately we lose 9 wickets so we only score 98 runs. James Bigault bowled well with 1/15, backed up by Hayden Wiltshire with 0/11 and Ansh Gidh with 0/12. Danny Costello chipped in with two runouts. Batting second the Green Hawks were tied down by some good White Hawks bowling and struggled to build any momentum with the bat. A special thanks to Jake who volunteered for Pine Rivers and represented them well making 20 runs, and then taking a wicket. A PB on the bowling front from Jett taking 2/1 off 2 overs. GAME REPORT: A very hot morning and the boys were lucky enough to bowl first with Mason again the pick of the bowlers with 2/13 (and was on a hat trick too) well supported by Luke Young and Jett. A good total was posted in the local derby with the White Hawks and it was game on. Angus again topped scored with a solid 39 and a string of good scores (Riley 37, Jett 34, Luke Young 33 and Noah 28) contributing to finally seeing the boys home and posting a gross score of 250 (their highest score off the bat ). Special mention to Luke Young who was not well on the day (and in the heat) but toughed it out to be Man of the Match with a great all-round contribution. Liam Hooper had a run-outs GAME REPORT: We played our second game this season at Everton Park State School. Due to the expected heat for the day we decided if we win the toss we will field first. We did win the toss and our Captain Jacob opted to field. Wilston North white entered the field with all bats blazing getting a total of 206 runs. We took five wickets, one catch and bowl by Charles, a run-out by Liam Hooper a catch each for Xavier and Christian, and one batsmen bowled by Christian. Batting last and chasing a total of almost 200 runs, coach told the players to enjoy the game and go for the big shots, and a few certainly, unfortunately for us we gave away seven catches, not all easy catches, but the fielding team did not drop any catches. We finish the very hot day on 118 runs but unfortunately had 11 outs. The players showed great sportsmanship especially while we had breaks every three overs due to the heat. GAME REPORT: Still down on troops due to injury and illness the Hawks put in a good performance going down to Toombul Green on first innings. After winning the toss and electing to field Toombul Green made a good start reaching 3/189 after their 25 overs. The Hawks then had their turn and while scoring at a similar rate and being down a few players were bowled out in the 23 rd over for 162. Some excellent batting on the first day by Josh and the reliable Flynn F however the star of the day was Thomas S who made a rock solid 36*. Returning on day 2 the Hawks scored 2/158 in their 2 nd innings. All boys spent good time in the middle with Flynn F, Max and Lachlan all retiring before Luke had his turn scoring a quick fire 25* to end the innings. Earlier on Flynn F made 43* to top score for the Hawks. With their turn in the field the Hawks bowled out the opposition and took more wickets overall however Toombul ended up being too strong scoring 312 to win on 1 st innings. The top half of the batting order made a strong start, only to see the lower order struggle against some impressive bowling & fielding, finishing with a hard fought score of 158 from 54 overs. Day 2 The opposition batsman put on a consistent performance with their runs spread fairly evenly amongst their batsman. The deciding differences were a considerable amount of bowling extras gifted to the opposition & some catches that went down. Right from ball 1, the pitch was lively, but not consistent. Some balls did keep low, but others exploded off a good length. Sam found their openers gloves on the 4th ball of the innings with one that shot up off a good length. None of their batsmen ever looked comfortable, as we continually put the ball in exactly the right spot to have the pitch perform for us. Sam made them look ordinary with his 3 for 6, and Nathan Brown was also destroying them 2 for 3. Jack Mackellar was into the action tearing out the heart of their middle order. Corie chimed in with 2 wickets, and they were embarrassingly dismissed for 44. Coming back to bowl, we had about an hour and 10 minutes to rip through them. They made a good start, as we set a very attacking field, but once we broke through, wickets followed quickly. Sam was again on song, Andrew picked up 2 and Matt Cook swung one beautifully to find the outside edge to Andrew at first slip. After the position we forged on day 1, having them 4/54 at the end of play, we hoped we could quickly push through them for as little as possible. We got our wish, and they managed only another 30 odd runs before being all out. Andrew was devastating with the ball, getting it to lift off a good length again, and was quickly returning them to the pavilion. With a small total of 31 to chase for victory, we wanted to get there none down. Col didn't quite follow the plan, being dismissed in the 3rd over. Kyle came and went quickly, before Andrew and Corie steadied the ship to take us easily over the line. A great team performance all-round, and the first outright victory for us this season. The 23 points gained from this win will surely see us sitting atop of the ladder, Man of the match goes to the old stager, Andrew Beighton Captain / Manager: Colin Otto
