2 The President s Bat Welcome to the third edition of the Hawk Talk. I certainly hope that everyone is enjoying their season so far. We have been lucky this season with the weather with only one Saturday afternoon affected by wet weather. Last weekend was our final round of cricket fixtures prior to the Xmas break. The season commences again on 27 th / 28 th January 2017 which is the first weekend after the kids go back to school in the new year. In the U13 to Open Divisions, teams compete for premiership points in Pre Xmas and Post Xmas competitions. The Hawks have won two premierships. Congratulations to our Open Sea Hawks and the U15 Falcon Hawks which have been successful in the Pre Xmas Competition. A reminder also that our club will be hosting the Under 12 Development Carnival, the Healy Cup, here at South Pine from 2 nd to 6 th January I will be at the grounds at Brendale each day and would appreciate any assistance from club members, especially if you have children involved in games at Brendale that day. Help is mainly required around lunch, 10.30am to 12.00pm. Games will also be played at Albany Creek State School, Albany Hills State School, Ferny Reserve and Marists College at Ashgrove.. I m sure some of our younger boys might be interested to come down and have a look over the week. They may be there next year or the year after. Many of our players only play the first half of the season as they have school cricket commitments in the new year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them and their coaches for their efforts thus far and wish them well with their cricket. We hope to have you back again next season. This means that we will have some vacancies in some teams, especially in the U12 to U16 age groups, so boys if you have mates who have heard of all your exploits and would like to have a go themselves, please contact John Murray, our Registrar and he can fill your teams. We also had some parents in the U8 and U9 grades who only signed up their kids for a half season, not sure whether they would like the game. I know that many of these kids wish to continue, so please contact John Murray to make sure you can be in the same team. Over the Christmas break we have several boys who will be competing in Brisbane North Representative teams all over the state. These people are listed in this edition of the Hawk Talk. I would like to wish them well and know that they will be great ambassadors for our club. Caitlin Mair from our U14 Falcon Hawks will be playing in the Queensland U15 Girls team down in Canberra for the national Titles. Go Caity.! Another great thrill for the Hawks Cricket Club was the selection of one of our former juniors into the Australian Test team. Congratulations Matthew Renshaw. We ll all be watching your exploits on the field for Australia over the Xmas cricket period. On behalf of the Hawks Committee and their spouses I would like to wish you all a very happy and safe Xmas and a prosperous New Year. Steve Casey

3 The first half of our Junior Summer Season has now concluded and several players are vacating from teams due respective school commitments. This will leave vacancies in teams for the 2nd Half of the season commencing 27th & 28th January Players who have only registered for Half Season and wish to continue playing after Christmas should now contact our Registrar John Murray to make arrangements. Mobile: New players are also welcome to the Hawks, so if you know of anyone interested, please pass it on.

10 Thank You Hawks, $318 raised to support the McGrath Foundation. Special mention to the B2 Team - $145 raised through non-cricket activities before and after the game. The B2 team and their opponents Macgregor Mongrels looked very handsome in their man-genta attire. Well done guys!

Wonderful batting innings by the Grey Hawks really put the White Hawks under pressure. Well played White Hawks and great batting from Nick Lawrence and solid restrictive bowling from Jack O'Sullivan. 14 UNDER 8 GREEN HAWKS 18/11/ st Inn Albany Creek Vs Albany Creek Black Hawks Batting: Danny Costello 24 Ansh Gidh 21 Hayden Wiltshire 16 Bowling: Hayden Wiltshire 2/11 Danny Costello 1/15 Hudson Morley 0/6 Fielding: A runout to Ansh Gidh and a caught & bowled to Hayden Wiltshire were the fielding highlights this week. GAME REPORT: The Green Hawks batted second, with highlights being a six from Danny and a string of fours from Ansh and Hayden. This week was the second consecutive week of the team achieving new highest Gross and Nett scores from batting. The boys showed great commitment and energy with their fielding, with alert backing up and ground fielding desperation. This week the boys were really focusing on proper bowling technique with some great improvement from both Danny and James. Bowling highlights included Hayden with 2/14 (including a caught & bowled), Ansh with 1/15 and Hudson with a miserly 0/6. Hudson received this week s player of the match due to his tight and economical bowling as well as a good improvement in his ball striking with the bat. A good effort from all of the boys. GAME REPORT: This game probably ranked as our best effort with the bat to date. Everyone contributed to the score with some good boundary s being struck. Some of the strokes showed real promise straight bat, moving the feet and all. With that performance we need to arrange for the selectors to come and visit. Thanks again to the parents who helped out. David Davies

Six wickets were taken, including doubles from Tanush and Janelle and a spectacular runout by Thomas. When it came Green Hawks time to bat, plenty of players chimed in with fours and quick singles, plus a few cracking sixes by Thomas. The score of 95 runs, with only four wickets lost, reduced the score to 83, well above that of the Pirates. The Pirates are a lovely side that tried really hard and had some great innings and bowling of their own, but well done to the Green Hawks for remaining undefeated after 7 matches. Excellent running between the wickets, good communication between the batsmen but we lost too many wickets to be competitive. Captain was Elijah and Man of the Match was Joshua. Darren / Diane

Well done boys! We had some great fielding and then followed up with some very precise batting. Harry come away as top batter and well done Zade for getting his first wicket Awesome job everyone! Heather Toye / Vanessa Patrick UNDER 10 BLUE HAWKS 19/11/ st Inn Albany Creek Blue Hawks Vs 113 Wilston North Blue 150 Batting: Jonathon Kennedy 25 Xavier Shea 19 Nell Schoeman 17 Jett Barker 17 Bowling: Xavier Shea 2/15 Nell Schoeman 1/7 Hervey Shackel 1/7 Jett Barker 1/14 Fielding: Catches by Hervey and Charlie and Nell had a catch of his own bowling GAME REPORT: We had a good start by winning the toss, electing to field first, Wilston must have thought have the come to the right place to play. We had three great catches in the first four overs and the bowlers were bowling very good line and length balls. We did loose a bit of momentum later in the innings as the wickets dried up and the batsmen start scoring fours. Set a total of 150 runs, the first few batsmen score runs at a constant pace keeping the total ticking on, unfortunately for us we just lost too many wickets on run outs, and even with a flourish of runs from the last few batsmen, fell short of a very good total. Well played to the team, Wilston was a well round team and you played really well to get this close Nell Schoeman

17 Page 17 WAREHOUSE Saturday 12 & 19/11/2016 B2 12 & 19/11/ st Inn nd Inn 2 Albany Creek Vs 208 Griffith Uni 205 Batting: ANDREW BEIGHTON 118 Chris Brown 16* Shane Mackellar 15 Sam Beighton 14 Bowling: DANIEL ROHDE 5/59 Andrew Beighton 3/9 Logan Otto 1/15 GAME REPORT: Resuming today after the rain stopped play early last week, we were hoping to knock over their centurion early, and make in-roads into the batting line up of our opposition. Our opposition sat at 3/168, but we felt we were in with a good chance. Dan Rohde started us off, finishing his over from last week. It only took Dan 6 balls to pick up the outside edge of the centurion's bat, and the remainder of their team were like ducks in a shooting gallery. Dan ripped the life out of their batting line up, taking his first ever senior 5 for, and then Andrew stepped up and cleaned up the rest. Into the sheds we went, ready to start our run chase. Without doubt, the star of our batting innings was Andrew Beighton, as he drove, cut and pulled his was flawlessly to 118. Andrew's was an innings of pure brilliance, and gave only one chance, the actual one he was dismissed on, (aside from almost running himself out on 99). Now for those good at maths, the rest of the team only mustered 90 between us. However, although there were some lower scores, it was the partnerships that we formed with Andrew that really were the difference between us and them today. Andrew was the 8th wicket to fall at 176, but he was involved in partnerships of 42, 55, 30 and 40 with various others. When Andrew finally did go at 176, we still required 40 to win, leaving it up to Dan Rohde, Dean Rodhe, Chris Brown and Logan Otto to bring us home. Inch by inch we crept closer to the score, with our opposition throwing everything at us. Dean and Dan stone walled our opposition, only emerging from behind the wall to flash the odd one to the boundary, really frustrating our opponents. When Dean and Dan were finally gone, Logan joined Chris at the crease with 15 runs to go. Chris and Logan fought for 10 overs as we inched toward the total. The tension was palpable, and from square leg, I could see and hear the cheers coming from the bunker for every run. It took 5 overs to go from 202 to 204, but Chris and Logan held strong. Finally, with just 2 required to win, Chris let go with a magnificent pull shot, first finding the middle of the bat, and then the mid wicket boundary. The bunker went bezerk. Logan and Chris embraced on the pitch like long lost family members, for what seemed like an eternity, and then with Logan's arm still wrapped around Chris's shoulder, started making their way from the field... Only to be reminded by Captain Col, at square leg, that the innings isn't over, and should continue until we are all out. Having overcome the man love between them, and settled their emotions of winning the game, the pair returned to their respective ends to continue the game. 2 balls later, Logan lifted one high in the air to be caught at fine leg, but at last, the game was already won. I would have to say that today was one of the most beautiful days of cricket I have been present on the field for. Dan Rohde and his destructive bowling, Andrew Beighton and his elegant century, and the guts, grit and determination of our last 4 batsmen to grind out the win for us. It is always nice to be part of such competitive games, but it is even better to be on the right side of the outcome. It really did leave me with a feeling of exhilaration today from the result. So after the end of Round 1, the Hawks have won 4 of our 5 games. We will have to wait for other results to come in to see where we sit on the table, but I can say that Macgregor Mongrels lost outright to Rebel Tourists, which will see them drop from first place, but we may remain in second due to the additional points Rebel Tourists get for the win. Regardless of where we sit, I think we have proved our point that the AC Hawks are the team to watch. We now go into 5 one day games for Round 2, however the one day format is not our forte, and if we can win 3 of the 5 in this round, I would think we would be well placed going back into the final 2 day round. Now back to Man of the Match. While Andrew's century was magnificent, I think today was set up from the outset by Dan's 5 for, and add in his little cameo at the end of the chase, and think it is a well deserved Man of the Match award for Dan Rohde. Well bowled Dan, and congratulations. Captain / Manager: Colin Otto

Hawks batted first and after a shortened day 1 due to rain and within the first session of day 2, the Hawks were all out for a lowly total of 97. Best of the batsmen were D. Humphrey an L. Wright with 20 and 16 respectively. Needless to say it didn't take long for Bribie to chase down the total to take first innings points and by close of play they were 4/164. One wicket each... to A. GAME REPORT: The Green Hawks scored their first win this week on the back of strong batting and bowling performances. The Green Hawks batted first, with highlights being a six from Hayden and a flurry of fours from Ansh, Danny and Hayden. Hudson Morley demonstrated some great improvement achieving his equal highest innings score this week too. The team achieved a milestone with their batting score topping one hundred. The team backed up their batting with a tight bowling effort including Danny Costello with 1/3, Dan Marsh with 0/3 and James Bigault with a miserly 0/6. The boys are maintaining their alertness in the field, desperate not to give away an runs. Ansh received this week s player of the match due to his top score of 29 and quality. Hamish / Darren

The score of 109 runs, with only four wickets lost, reduced the score to 97, well above that of the Pumas. The boys all played well. Jake took a great caught and bowled, and Tom a good runout. GAME REPORT: Everyone contributed to the game tonight, with pretty even batting performance. Some good batting strokes allowed us to get a competitive total. 7 of the 8 boys got between 10 to 14 runs each, so good consistency coming through. We probably let a few too many over throws creep in, which made a bit of a difference. Jett and Eamon bowled a nice line and length only going for 3 and 8 runs respectively off their 2 overs. Jake took the C&B, our first in the team. Jayden and Marley each bowled a maiden, Tom and Oliver bowled some nice tidy overs and Craig caught a bit of shuteye before returning to field and getting through his 2 overs. The day started off with light showers and this left us with a slippery pitch. The boys bowled really well with some great run-outs and there was great work in the field by Sean, Jack and Declan. There was some accurate bowling by Ragesh and Jackson and the teamwork was very good. The boys batted and there were some outstanding scores including 34 for Henry, 28 for Sam and the first two sixes of the season. There was lots of baking-up and the boys put in an awesome effort and all-round performance. Heather Toye / Vanessa Patrick

GAME REPORT: In a dominant performance, the U11 Hawks have secured their 3 rd win in a row with the game basically over after the first day s play. Great bowling restricted Valleys to 67 with Luke and Hayden picking up two wickets each. In return, the ever reliable Jacob top scored with 26 and in a return to form, Flynn Connolly saw off some good bowling, retiring after 50 balls and then coming back out to finish on 21* to see the Hawks reach 148 in their first innings. Some early wickets to the Hawks gave hope of an outright win but Valleys managed to hang on to be 7/81 at the end of the day s play. Well done Hawks! Manager: Craig Lawrence / Simon Turner

29 Page 29 Saturday 26 & Sunday 27/11/2016 WAREHOUSE B2 26/11/ st Inn Albany Creek Vs 8/112 Yesterday s Heroes 4/107 Batting: ANDREW BEIGHTON 53* Colin Otto 23 Bowling: Corie Morrad 3/18 Matthew Cook 1/11 Sam Beighton 1/16 GAME REPORT: At 12:50, 10 minutes before the game was supposed to start, the opposition team only had 3 people turn up. At 1 o'clock, they only had 5. Following the rule book, the opposition would have to forfeit the match. The Hawks were feeling generous, so for the second time in a row against this team, we took the field rather than take the forfeit. After a rocky start from Logan, who delivered 3 no balls and got hit for 2 sixes in the opening over, Sam and Andrew steadied the ship. Sam picked up the first wicket, thanks to a sharp catch at first slip by Kyle. Their number 3 batsman was happy to throw banter, but unfortunately he wasn't as quick between the wickets as he was with his mouth, and Logan had him stranded with a good throw. Good, tight bowling restricted the run scoring, as a wicket was never far off. Corie was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/18, while Kyle, Sam, Matt and Andrew all took one each. Two good catches to Kyle, one to Logan, Casey and Jack, as well as a simple return catch to Corie off his own bowling. A good bowling and fielding effort restricting the opposition to 112. When we came off the field the scorebook was a mess. The bowlers' names were somehow wrong, despite the scorers having direct access to the team list (hence the "Moran", "Cook" and "S. Baton" in the bowling figure summary). The batting added up to 105 and the bowling to 121, with the progressive runs tally ending on 119. The two captains from each team decided on the middle ground, giving the Hawks 112 to win. We lost a few quick wickets at the start, but Andrew steadied the ship for us. After the 3rd wicket had fallen, Captain Col met Andrew in the middle for what would again be the highest partnership of the game. Coming off at the drinks break, it started to rain. Whilst the opposition team was happy, the Hawks were well poised for a win, only needing 37 runs to win from there. The rain stopped and the play resumed, with Col and Andrew putting on a few more runs. Col eventually fell to an unlucky field placement, but star batsman Corie dominated the spinners for the rest of the game. Andrew hit a beautiful six over cover to bring up his 50 and the winning runs in true Beighton style. Two contenders for man of the match, but without Andrew once again being the rock in our batting side, a victory might not have been so easy. Man of the Match goes to Andrew Beighton for his 1 wicket and 53 not out. Captain / Manager: Casey McFarlane

30 Page 30 WAREHOUSE B2 27/11/ st Inn Albany Creek Vs 103 Rebel Tourists 67 Batting: Nathan K Brown 29 Wides 21 Corie Morrad 13* Bowling: Sam Beighton 4/15 Corie Morrad 3/9 Nathan J Brown 2/4 GAME REPORT: Turned up to an absolute ripper of a wicket, far different to the one we played on last time at that ground (pics in comments). One end had grass longer than the outfield and the other end had patches of mud with cracks already forming. We new that batting would be difficult no matter when we did it, but the boys could tell it would get harder as the day went on. With this in mind, we won the toss and had a bat. We started slowly, scoring only 13 runs in the opening 10 overs. The openers went cheap, but Dan and Nathan steadied the ship for a 38 run partnership. Once Dan fell in the 17th over, the wickets began to fall regularly, with Nathan doing his best to keep the runs coming. In the end he fell for 29, needing a sharp catch by the bowler to remove him. Some late runs from Corie, Nathan no.2, Jack and Daniel put us above 100 where we knew we were in for a chance. The opposition team came out to bat thinking they'd already won. Nathan kept one end tidy, taking the first wicket to have their opener out for 4. While their other opener was scoring runs quickly, Sam had other ideas. Hitting their number 3 on the pads right in front of the wickets and destroying their number 4's stumps, the other team started to get nervous. The very next ball from Sam was a ripping yorker that took care of their run scorer, taking his middle peg from the ground. Corie came on and continued Nathan's good work, taking 3 wickets in the 3 overs he bowled. The Man of the Match performance came from Corie's red hat, as all the batsman and even their square leg umpire were all completely bamboozled by its colour. Browny took over from Sam and cleaned up the innings with 2 wickets in his 7 balls. 2 catches to Dan Brown and one each to Browny and Nixon. An outstanding bowling and fielding performance saw Rebel Tourists bowled out for 67, handing the Hawks their 6th straight win this season. For Man of the Match, the contenders were Corie for his 13* and 3/9 (and his hat), Nathan for his 29 runs and economical bowling of 1/23, but it has to go to Sam for his 7 overs of fast and straight bowling that destroyed their top order and put the Hawks in the winning position (we won't mention his batting). Well done Hawks, we proved we're the number 1 side in this competition even without the help of our best and most experienced batsmen Col and Andrew. We'll go a long way to winning the final with bowling displays like today. I also can't forget to mention that Corie dropped Sam's 5-for. Sorry mate. Captain / Manager: Casey McFarlane

41 Page 41 WAREHOUSE B2 03/12/ st Inn Albany Creek Vs 184 Peninsula 6/121 Batting: ANDREW BEIGHTON 60 KYLE MILLARD 50 Nathan J Brown 12 Bowling: Corie Morrad 3/8 Nathan J Brown 1/2 Andrew Beighton 1/21 GAME REPORT: Winning the toss again, the Hawks decided to have a bat. We were off to a slow start, being restricted to 2/30 inside 10. Kyle came in at number 4, and wasted no time in hitting the bad balls to the boundary. Unusually, Andrew played the supporting role in this partnership, rotating the strike and hitting the odd boundary, while Kyle was doing the run scoring. A few glorious flicks through the leg-side and cracking straight drives saw us quickly and safely to 2/95 at the drinks break. Kyle went ballistic afterwards, hitting 15 off the first over back. After bringing up his 50 however, Kyle was caught admiring a cloud in the distance as he tried to slog one off his stumps and missed. Sam formed a small but handy partnership with Andrew as we pushed the score past 150. Some late wickets fell but runs kept coming from Nathan, Dean and Matt, as the score was elevated to 184 before we were bowled all out. A slow and steady start from Peninsula's opening batsmen saw them to 37 runs before Browny took the first wicket, with an in-swinging good length ball to knock over their opener. As the clouds loomed overhead, the Hawks had to focus on getting through overs quickly in order to get the required overs played to constitute a game (15). Andrew removed their number 3 with a good delivery to take out his off stump. Kyle, brought on to get through the overs, spun one past the inside edge of their other opener, as Casey picked up a lightning fast stumping to put them 3/62 chasing 184. Runs started to come for the batsmen, so the skipper turned to his trump card to get the job done. Corie's 3/8 off 3 stopped the runs from coming and put the Hawks into the position they needed to be in to win the game. With the Storm closing in, both captains and the Umpire agreed it was time to call the game off with Peninsula on 6/121 after 23. The umpire closed his eyes, picked a team at random and said "these guys win". Apparently it had something to do with our overall run rate being higher than theirs, even though nobody's entirely sure that's how the winner is picked. Either way, we batted and bowled well and we definitely deserved this win. Man of the Match is between Corie for his 3/8, Andrew for his 60 and 1 wicket, but it has to go to Kyle for his 50 which set up the game for the Hawks to win and his 1 wicket which started the wickets falling. Good win Hawks, I really enjoyed captaining the side for these 2 games, because we've got such a great team full of good players and even better blokes. Let's keep this run of good form going and take it home in the Grand Final Captain / Manager: Casey McFarlane

Right from the get go, Colin and Andrew pushed hard, with a 60 run opening partnership, until Andrew finally went in the 15th over. Partnerships continued Col/Kyle (34), Col/Sam (32), and Col/Danny (38) followed by some selfless fast runs in the final few overs to post a big score. With such a good total, we felt we were in command, but knew that the opposition innings all rested on us getting their No. 3 batsman out as quickly as possible. Logan picked up a wicket in the first over to bring the number 3 to the crease, where almost immediately, the batsman started dispatching good length bowling back over the fielders heads. We knew a chance would come from this guy, and in Andrew's 3rd over, Sam took a good grab at Mid-On to get rid of the danger man. The only other batsman to offer any real resistance was the other opener, who Corie picked up with a skied catch to Logan at Mid-On (which seemed to be the action position today). Following on from his 4 wickets in the last game, Sam took over and bowled with fire and aggression again to bag his 5-for, proving he really is a class above the opposition batsmen when in full song. Corie was ever reliable, cleaning up the lower order batsmen, finishing with figures of 3/7. The report can't be complete without mention of one of the sharpest, diving left handed, centimetres off the ground, keeper catches ever witnessed in Warehouse Cricket. Sam, bowling in the high 130's, angling across the left handed batsman, pitched on a full length on off. The batsman slashed through the line, picking up a thick outside edge that flew towards 3rd slip, however there was none in place. The keeper, realising it was not going to go to hand, launched, no exploded off his left foot, at full reach, across to the vacant 3rd slip region, horizontal that would have Steve Smith in awe, landing the ball dead centre of the glove, just centimetres off the ground. Richie Benaud hit his head on the top of his coffin as he tried to sit up to applaud the catch. The catch, had it been caught on video, would surely have been one replayed over many future summers during KFC classic catches, or during rain delays. With the aforementioned catch beautiful description, there can be no doubt as to the fine catcher. (it was me). A few weeks ago, I said that I would be happy with 3 out of 5 one day wins, as I rated us a better long form team. To date, we have notched 4 out of 4, and the way we have lifted our level of cricket as a team, leaves no misunderstanding of why we are leaving the other sides in our wake. After we complete the final one day game of Round 2, we should be an even more dominant force going back into the longer form of the game. Such is the strength of our bowling attack, 3 guns did not get out of the holster this game. Our batting depth is growing, proven by the solid partnerships, and chances are rarely going astray in the field. Keep up the momentum boys, and as I continue to remind you on the field, we need to keep our foot firmly planted on the throat of our opposition!! Man of the match this week, for his scintillating fast bowling performance (with the exception of the first ball) - Sam Beighton Captain / Manager: Colin Otto
