2 From the President: Gary Borgmann, CPD President, C.I. Chapter of ASPE I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far. If you missed our ASPE Member Appreciation Day at the Track, you missed another great event! The weather didn t always cooperate, but when the cars were running, they were hitting top speeds. Like past events, we had a good crowd in attendance and of course there was great food and beverages. The pit passes are one of the favorite items. It s pretty cool to be up close to drivers and teams, and even get an autograph or two. We were lucky to have a few ASPE V.I.P. s joining us too Our Society President Mitch Clemente and his wife Lori, along with our Region 2 Director Keith Bush and his wife Patty drove in from Cleveland to attend. They had nothing but praises for our special day of appreciation. I am sorry I missed our May meeting! Elections were held, but since all positions were uncontested, the new officers were installed without much fanfare. We do have a new board member, Bryan Lee with Aspinall who joined as our new Affiliate Liaison. So, all you manufacturer s reps, please let Mr. Lee know how he can help you and our chapter. I want to thank Mr. Kevin Coyne with Conacoa Precision Gas Controls for sponsoring our May luncheon seminar. Our next technical luncheon will be in Fort Wayne on July 13th. Rob Lloyd with Lubrizol will present on Value Engineering with CPVC. See details elsewhere in this issue. Our next Indy meeting will be in September on the 21st. We have another Fort Wayne meeting planned as well for September 14th. I recently returned from our ASPE Region 2 President s meeting in Detroit. I was very impressed with the city and how they ve been able to survive the economic hardships they ve experienced and the ability to rebuild. It was only a short 3 day visit, so of course I didn t get to see the whole city, but the downtown was thriving and my daughter has been to Detroit several times and assures me that it is experiencing a renaissance like rebirth. Since I am a gearhead, and an American boy that grew up during the muscle car era, it makes me happy to see the Motor City make a comeback! While in Detroit, we got to experience a day of practice for the Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle. This was my first time and it was lots of fun. On our way out of town we stopped by The Henry Ford Museum. This place is fantastic! It was much bigger than we had planned time for. So we ll have to go back again. The main reason for this trip was to attend the Region 2 Meeting to discuss ASPE and for each chapter to give a report of their chapter. It seemed as though maintaining membership is the main topic. Most chapters are holding even. Everyone shared what was working for them to build their membership, and of course what wasn t. Education was the other big topic. Again, everyone shared what worked best for them. We are very lucky to have so many manufacturers willing to contribute to our goals of presenting educational programs, as well as supporting us financially. Our chapter is one of the largest and more successful chapters in Region 2 (11 chapters). What we have is working well for us, but there is always room to improve. Changing things up is always a good idea! It keeps things from becoming stagnant. I would like to invite you to send me your thoughts, or suggestions on improving our chapter. Page 2
3 Continued: Gary Borgmann, CPD President, C.I. Chapter of ASPE Don t forget, our ASPE Golf Outing is coming up on August 4th. Talk to Pete, me, or any of your other ASPE officers if you would like to play, or sponsor a team, or even sponsor a hole. You ll find more details elsewhere in this issue. Follow up to the April seminar on Bulk Brine Delivery Systems. Bret Abner wanted to answer a few questions that came up in the April technical seminar: 1. Brine pumps can be located external or internal to the brine system tank, depending on the system design. The AUTOBrine System design has the pump on interior of the bulk brine tank. The reason for this design is there is the least likelihood for supply interruption when pushing liquid rather than a draw suction pump. Additionally for maintenance, cleaning or pump replacement we do not have to gain entry to the facility and disturb their workflow during peak work hours. Both can be accomplished without confined space entry into the bulk tank. 2. In colder climates, it is highly recommended to install an In Ground bulk brine system. The system is installed below the freeze line and thereby eliminates the concern of the fresh water supply, brine or salt from freezing or clumping up. On another note, the delivery of salt for Pneumatic tanks can be a challenge in very low temps if the salt was not dried prior to loading on the delivery truck. Salt with moisture can and will often freeze during transport making it impossible for blowing the salt during the pneumatic fill. You can have the same issue with gravity feed delivery, but the chances of it occurring are much less frequent than a pneumatic delivery. Additionally, Above Ground Liquid Brine system can be used in colder climates as well, if heat trace of brine fill and supply line are incorporated. 3. We are not aware of any negative side effects on any piping or plumbing damaged during delivery on Pneumatic-fed brine systems. See you at the next meeting, Gary Borgmann, CPD Page 3
