2 From the President: Gary Borgmann, CPD President, C.I. Chapter of ASPE May was a great month for me, but busy! Sandy and I took a trip out to Virginia to visit family and friends. We stopped for the night in Point Pleasant West Virginia. We ve been passing by this place for years and always wanted to stop and visit. It s an interesting little town. It s located at the confluence of the Kanawha River and Ohio River and was surveyed by George Washington in his younger days. It is said that he named it Point Pleasant. It s also said by some to be the site of the first revolutionary battle. They have some really nice murals painted along the flood walls of the city depicting the town s colorful history. Point Pleasant was also the site of a catastrophic bridge collapse in December 1967 which was the basis for the movie The Mothman Prophesies. All in all, it was a fun little town to visit! Also in May we held our Member Appreciation event at Victory Field. We had a great turnout, great weather, good ballpark food, and the Indians won their game for us! I m sorry if you weren t able to attend, but I m sure we will do it again, so you may have another chance to join us. And finally, we held our May ASPE meeting with Wes Reed from GasMedix presenting the technical seminar. Wes did a great job educating everyone on the latest Medical Gas Code updates with NFPA 99. Thank you Wes for sponsoring our luncheon, and thanks to everyone who took the time to attend! I ve been talking to you about ACE Mentoring for a while now and the chapter board of directors voted to donate $1,000 to sponsor a table at their annual Awards Banquet. This money went to (many) scholarships that were presented that night. David Townsend and I attended the event and were both very impressed with these students accomplishments. One of our own ASPE members, Mark Nordmeyer has been a mentor for several years now and was voted Mentor of the Year by his team. For me, it was a very inspirational evening knowing that we have so many dedicated mentors teaching and sharing their knowledge with these kids who are our future. These kids were really into it too and it showed with their enthusiasm! You should ve seen the looks on the parent s faces when their kids received a scholarship! Priceless! On June 9th, I attended our annual Region 2 President s Meeting in Evansville Indiana. Our Evansville Chapter played host to this event and did a great job with it. Keith Bush, our Region 2 Director chaired the meeting, and we also had some special guests there to speak to us, one of which was Blair Minyard, PE, CDT our ASPE Young Professionals Liaison. Blair was very optimistic with the future of ASPE and the building of our younger membership. She is full of great ideas which will come in handy as she is planning to run for VP Membership at the ASPE Convention. Our other speaker was Vincent (Vinny) Falkowski, our current VP Membership. Vinny is a very energetic guy and is very dedicated to ASPE. He too had great ideas to share with us on building our chapters. The main emphasis was on Retention! Keeping our members once they join is our biggest issue. Engagement is the answer for both chapter officers and members. ASPE is about more than just education. It s about camaraderie, encouragement, helping others and sharing your knowledge and experience with the younger generation, and networking among other things. Each year we get together and discuss what has been working for each chapter and what has not. It s amazing how different things are between the chapters, and other areas of the U.S.! Basically, what works for us may not work for them! Page 2
3 Cont: Gary Borgmann, CPD President, C.I. Chapter of ASPE Other things discussed were the upcoming ASPE Convention and Expo in Atlanta the end of September. It promises to be bigger and better than the last. They have changed a few things around a little. They are offering tours that will earn you CEU s as well as the classroom tech sessions. We will be electing new officers as well. We ve been under the steady leadership of Mitch Clemente for the past four years now and it s time for new leadership. I hope we get someone as dependable and dedicated as Mitch is! If you plan to attend the convention, you should do it soon. Hotel rooms will go fast! You can find all the information you need at the ASPE.org website and the ASPE Pipeline newsletter. Also, like last year, we are giving away a convention registration for one lucky ASPE member (Engineer or Designer). This will include $699 Full Registration, unless it s your first time attending, then its only $350. It also includes $200 air fare, and 3 nights at $169 at the Hilton Atlanta, plus taxes. That s a $1,400 value plus, or minus. So, your name to me before our July board meeting on July 13th when we will draw a name. You will be responsible for registering for everything and submitting your receipts for reimbursements. The ASPE.org website has all of the information and links to help you along with this. So, as most of you know we will not hold any meetings during the summer break. We resume our meetings in September, and this also holds true for the Evansville and Fort Wayne areas. We re trying to put together some good technical sessions for you all, but if you have any suggestions, please let me or Bryan Lee know and we ll try to put something together for you. Don t forget about the ASPE Golf Tournament on Friday August 3rd. It will be here before you know it, so get with Pete if you would like to play, or sponsor a team or hole. The folks at Ironwood are letting us play the Ridges course in lieu of the Valley s this year, so we ll play the Lakes and the Ridges this year. Enjoy your summer, Gary Borgmann, CPD Page 3
