Oct 1-2 Oct 8 R/C Schedule 2011 Miramar Airshow MCAS Miramar Auction and Raffle (w/bbq and Fun-Fly), Cactus Cactus Park Fence.The fencing project is COMPLETE! Both the m ain and the northern gates have installed. Ron Smith has re-installed our lock with chain, to the m ain gate with the current combo lock. The northern g ate has a chain with com bo lock- all locks are s et to and should remain locked unless we need access to th e river bed areas. The secon d sm all in ternal fence d oes not req uire a lock. Runway is Striped These handsome gentlemen stripped the runway today and it came out great. We com pleted it in 2 hours! 2 Minutes of the July Meeting Keith Miller The Meetin g was calle d to order with the Ple dge of Allegian ce at 7:00. Board mem bers present were the P resident, Vice Presid ent, Secretary and Treasurer. There were a total o f 23 m embers present. New Members and Guests : Boyd Vaughn joins us from Yuma, now residing in Santee. See you at the field, Boyd! Approval of Meeting Minutes: M/S/P to approve the minutes from last month s meeting. Treasury Report: M/S/P to approve the Treasurer s Report. To tal cost of the run way resurfacing was $ , of which the special runway fund fell short by roughly $240. The club treasury covered the difference, as agreed in May. However, by the close of the m eeting, several generous mem bers closed the gap com pletely, making personal donations to the runway fund! Beginning Balance: $8, Income: $1, Expenses: $3, Ending Balance: $ 5, Financial Review : The Board took an action to re-visit th e overall c lub financial plan this m onth and report to the club. Safe and Sound: The new runway lines were painted by Don Madison, Lance Edmunson, Dick Clavert and Fred Moffett. Next time you see these mugs, give em a pat on the back for a job well done! With the recen t rules change, the run way centerline is no longer the boundary for safe flight. The red /white s triped S afety Line (now 25 from the flight stations) is the new boundary for safe flight. NO aircraft (of any size or style) shall fly on the pilot-side (so uth) of th e Safety L ine. While the closer boundary is intended to allow smaller ligh ter p lanes to fly clos er, m embers are urged to avoid the tem ptation to see how close we can get to the line without crossing it. Norm al flight should still be conducted north of the runway surface whenever possible. [Safety Officer note post-meeting: Don also painted a lift-off line for us. While we have no rule specific to this line, pilots are urged to keep wheels on the ground during normal East to West takeoff rolls until passing the lift-o ff line. This reduces the likelihood of inadvertent mishaps close to pilot stations #3 and #4 during those squirrelly moments.] Old Business: Wings Ov er Gillespie Bob Muhlem an presented a Letter of Appreciation to Chuck Cassity who helped during the event, but wasn t present at the June m eeting to rece ive h is certificate. Waste Management Services The final payment to W aste Managem ent was m ade in July to cov er our res idential con tract which expired at the end of June. Not sure why W aste Management hasn t yet collected their bins, but they should disappear shortly. Mem bers are reminded to pack what you bring and keep the field tidy. As Don Westergren rem inded us, that s how the club oper ated successfully for many, many years. A review o f the club s agreem ent with San Diego County (Ben) revealed that the club is responsible for m aintaining (among other things) trash receptacle s. In the spirit of financial m anagement and our history of maintaining a clean f ield, Ben will con tact Randy Ford to determ ine if they expect commercial waste services, or if we re free to pack and carry ou r own waste as th e club did for many years past. The key point the club is concerned with is fundi ng a dum pster that was primarily used by folks (and trespassers) to Page 2

3 dump non-club related indus trial trash, which w as a misuse of the service. New Business: The temporary construction fence along the southern edge of the di rt road should be rem oved and replaced with a permanent fence by the end of July. Members are reminded that, once completed, locks will be used on the gates at the 3-wire fence and the roadway fence which shall rem ain LOCKED when there are no club m embers at the field. This is to protect the newly capped region in between. The locks will use the same combination as the front gate. Members are asked to unlock the gates at the beginning of the day ( for e mergency access to th e riverbed). The last mem ber to leave must now lock the gates as well as the pin box and the front main gate. With regards to the white-banded fencing that runs on the far side of t he road to that horse joint [Ben], it s unknown who erected the fence, but there is no gate there. Please use caution avoid damage the fabric bands when passing between them on your way out to the river bed. Contest Directors Bob Muhlem an recalls reading a recommendation in the AMA m agazine that 1/3 of a clubs m embership should be qualified as CD. This subject was tabled in view of the limited number of contests that we host requiring a CD, and the fact that we currently have two (Leroy Brooks, Lee Main). Anyone interested to qualify as CD are encouraged, as the pro cess isn t that difficult (see the AMA web site for details). Drawing for Free Membership: Roger Gordon sorry, must be present to win. Model Sharing: Leroy Brooks shared his Top Flite P-39, covered with 3/4 glass and painted with Rustoleum. He tested the paint with 15% nitro for a week with no ill effects. Power is a Magnum 61, and it s controlled by a Hitec 2.4 GHz system. Weight is 9 lbs with a 26 oz/sq ft wing loading. The color scheme is that of a P-39 squadron the flew out of Australia. Ron Smith added that Rustoleum painted surf aces cure very well when left in the sun for a couple of days. Joe Rosevear builds his own NiMH batteries for a sm all (39 ) m odel that he s flying. MegaBatteries.com sells individual tabbed cells of m ay sizes. He glue s them toge ther, solde rs the tabs in series and uses 20 AWG wire for the power connector. Joe uses battery shrink (a type of heat shrink sleeve) to cover the pack. Demonstrations: None this month. 4 President s Message At long last the Cactus Park soils capping project is finished! It was over a y ear ago that the Count y began stockpiling e arth on our upper parking lot. The enti re area to the n orth of the runway, out to the margins of the river edge at the cottonwood trees, and west all the way to the m ain entrance, has been scraped, scoope d, recovered, replanted and fenced. At the end of June Don Ma dison led a crew consisting of him self, Lance Ed munson, Dick Clavert and Fred Moffitt to repaint all the striping on the runway and in the pits (see photos elsewhere in this issue of the Hangar News). Thanks, Guys, on behalf of the club. This month, the perm anent fence along the Hering Ranch road was install ed. A pedestri an pass-through gate was placed near the eastern end of our runway that will allow us access to ward the north in order to retrieve downed aircraft. Thanks to our VP, Ron Smith, for advising and coor dinating with Randy Ford of County Park s and Mike Ballard of Count y P ublic Works in determining the best placement for the gate. Ron also coordinated the lock setup with the County so that we have co mbination locks on all gates set to our yearly code.
