1 ion District Governer mil Kantola pril 2009 Diamond hallenge ne of the goals this year was to have a positive membership by the end of this year. Not only in the District but also in each of the clubs within our District. The main reason is to help your club. More members mean more hands to do more projects. The district is not alone in wanting new members. ion lubs International has thee programs to encourage membership. International President l Brandel has announced a Diamond hallenge ward. ions lubs with a plus in membership as of June 30, 2009 will receive a diamond pin from ions International. two member net growth merits a single diamond pin; a four member net growth earns a two-diamond pin and so on with a ten member growth earning a five diamond pin. When President l Brandel was at the Multiple District onvention, he made the following commitment. The International President will induct any new member joining a ions club since February 2009 that attends the International onvention MD-4 breakfast. ll the member needs to do is bring their Membership ertificate. What an honor to be inducted into ions by the International President. The third one is for the xcellence ward for the lub President. To qualify for the xcellence ward the club needs a positive membership for the year. s I have said before, membership growth is not a numbers game for International or for the district. New members are the life blood of our organization. New members result in new projects and more service for our communities. I hope you have all signed up for coming to this year s District onvention. The theme for this year s convention is The spirit of giving. ions give all year long and it is time to celebrate. ome and celebrate with us in acramento this May. We erve DG mil Kantola ion Vice District Governor Ken Ibarra ur District onvention ontinued ast month I gave you a brief description of the first days at our District onvention in acramento. To recap, Thursday is golf and ospitality oom setup, followed by ospitality oom usage. Friday is the official opening of the convention and will be in the late morning to accommodate travelers. The abinet Meeting will open and introduce our guests, especially International Director Beverly tebbins of Texas. unch will honor our club presidents and will be followed by the Barbershop Quartet contest and the District andidate s demonstrations no, they are not the same contest. ater in the afternoon, after hospitality, of course, the ostume Parade will take place followed by the andidate s ocktail Party and dinner, honoring our PDG s. Dessert will be the annual mateur how, of which yours truly always participates. fter the laughter, the an Bruno ions take over the night with Tube teaks and our own hospitality disco. I don t know about you, but in my opinion, the toughest part about being a ion is getting up aturday at our convention. No one in their right mind could possibly top the fun of the previous day however we always try. nd we start really early on aturday with the Gin Fizz ye pener hosted by the Burlingame ions nothing like a little alcohol and PDG Don tanaway s boisterous voice to get one going. owever, we do get serious after breakfast with the Memorial ervice, which honors our members who have passed in the previous year. PDG George and elen abeeb organize a wonderful send-off. We wipe away our tears and proceed to the infamous Tail-twister ontest, where short club skits are judged by the audience. ontinued page 4 4/26/2009 Page 1

4 YG TIN pril 2009 Thank you to the lubs that participated in this years eye glass collection day. We had over 20 clubs that delivered their glasses to the collection point. ion Denise has the totals for each club.the winning clubs will be announced at the convention. special thanks to ion Denise for letting us use the Daly ity Food Pantry Building as the new collection point. Its out of the wind and cold, great place to use. Thank you ion Denise and spouse Pat Kelly. It would be great to see more clubs collecting glasses. I know that the cost of the official ions boxes and the minimum that you have to buy is a little much. o to help out please contact ion andy from the Millbrae club, rfsahae@aol.com. he is trying to get clubs to go into together to purchase the minimum order. Thank You, ion Mike VDG Message - ontinued from Page 1 eemingly, in the background of the activities is the delegate certification and the District s election. aturday morning culminates with the voting of bylaw changes and the election of our District Governor, Vice District Governor and for the first time 2nd Vice District Governor. erious stuff, so please get informed and review the schedule. The abinet Meeting reconvenes after breakfast with what many believe is the most important part of the convention District awards and lub ontest winners. It is a brief time that we recognize and congratulate the many efforts of our members and clubs, capped with the crowning of the District s Top lub. aturday afternoon is simply a blast, beginning with the International Food quare. The diversity of our District is showcased by the different foods that are offered by our clubs. From Brisbane s popular bbq d corn cobs to Nikkei s sushi, the courtyard is packed full of friends and family eating and socializing. The outdoor activity is briefly interrupted by the traditional, but unofficial initiation of club presidents. an Bruno, Millbrae and Pacifica normally entertain the crowd by their unusual introduction of their incoming leaders. (It is rumored that there is a plan to initiate the incoming DG). s the sun gets lower, we prepare for the last gasp, the Governor s ocktail Party and Gala Banquet. We are treated with our version of the ed arpet as ions and guests flock together in their formal best evening gowns and white jacket tuxedos. It s a fitting event to allow our District Governor to shine and acknowledge another successful year of ionism. o, as you can imagine, District onvention is a tiring and sometimes brutal display of fellowship. It is fun and reward packed into one weekend. It is closure and rejuvenation. It is congratulations for a job well done and congratulations for a job well-earned. It is a wonderful time that all ions should experience. Not even my words can accurately describe the electric environment so you ll need to see for yourself. I ll see you in ac, VDG Ken 4/26/2009 Page 4
