2 My Southwest Region Booklet Contents + Notes for Teachers Tom Wier Three Dog Graphx Designs The booklet consists of ten half pages that can be assembled as a mini-book for students. The pages can be copied front to back to save paper. I assemble them in the order stated below. Contents Cover - I have students color or highlight the states of the Southwest region. States + Capitals - I have students use Social Studies books or they do it in computer lab to enhance search + research skills. Answer key is provided. Rivers Students use research tools to label the map. They could do this in pairs also. Answer key is provided. Industries Students unscramble the words to find some of the major industries in the Southwest region. I provide the first letter of each word for ELL students or those with special needs. We discuss the answers later in class. This is a good partner activity for those with limited vocabulary skills. Answer key is provided. Agriculture Same format as industries. Answer key is provided. Natural Resources Same format as industries and agriculture. Answer key is provided. State Nicknames and Largest Cities This is a great way to get students to build research skills using various resources. We discuss the reason behind the nicknames. Answer key is provided. Places to Visit Using the alphabet code, this activity can be done by all students independently. I show PowerPoint slides of each place when finished. Answer key is provided. Acrostic Poem Fun activity that allows lots of creativity and gives me feedback regarding what students have learned. We share responses. What I Learned - This page can be used in a variety of ways. I use it to enhance paragraph formation (topic sentence, detail sentences, conclusion sentence). It also can be used to assess students understanding of the region. Thank you for your purchase!
