1 King Edward VII Newsletter March 2018 Record Breaking Sixth Form Success! Sixth Form students and staff are celebrating record exam results at A level and level 3 BTEC. Earlier this month, after results from every school in England were published on the government s performance table s website, students at King Edward VII were jubilant. Progress rates for A level are better than all local providers in North West Leicestershire and amongst the highest in the county; 1 in four students at King Edward VII achieved a full grade higher than students with similar starting points nationally. Performance in sport and performing arts was even more impressive. Compared to similar students nationally, 75% of our students achieved at least one grade higher. Although the bar has been set very high by the class of 2017, our current Year 13 students are up for the challenge! They are busy working for their final exams in June and are looking forward to attending Easter Revision School during the holiday.

2 Football Cup Final KING EDWARD VII SECURE DRAMATIC CUP SUCCESS! The King Edward VII Year 10 boys football team won the County Cup in a dramatic back and forth game against Thomas Estley, eventually triumphing 6-5. The result secured the college's first County Cup win since 2010 when captain Ryan Foster's Year 10 team secured the hat trick of District League, League Cup and County Cup in the same season. King Edward VII started well, with current captain Kyle Jardine and Luke Aldridge forcing early saves from the Estley keeper and Connor King firing just over, before a stonewall penalty gave Estley the lead. However King Edward VII roared back into the game with a fantastic strike in off the crossbar from Cam Reeve, before pressure from King and Jardine forced the Estley keeper into a mistake and Jardine made it 2-1. Thomas Estley started to go direct and almost pulled off a comeback. A debatable penalty against George Leeland made the score 6-3, and the previously solid King Ed defence started to wobble. A lapse in concentration from Dev Upton allowed an Estley player to fortuitously lob keeper Callum Matchett for 6-4, and then poor marking from a set piece allowed an Estley player a free header and it was 6-5 with a few minutes still left to play. But King Edward VII managed to hold on for the dramatic win, and bring the cup home to Coalville. The boys were absolutely shattered and barely celebrated the win, fatigued but also disappointed by the poor end to what was a good performance overall. Hopefully they will be raring to go for next season when they will look to defend the trophy and launch an assault on the national schools cup. The whole community is delighted by the phenomenal achievement of our Year 10 footballers. In the second half, Jardine raced onto a great ball from Cam Reeve and slotted home under the keeper for 3-1. An own goal made it 4, and after a quiet first half, Hugo Jinkinson came to the fore and rose highest to head home a corner for the fifth goal. A freak goal from a cross that went straight in brought a quick reply for Estley, but Jinkinson once again was sharpest in the box from a set piece to steer home a 6th goal for King

3 Year 10 assembly reaches the PEAK! The PEAK programme (Preventative Education And Knowledge) is an exciting initiative devised by Leicestershire County Council as part of the Healthy Schools Programme. The aim of the programme is to raise awareness of young people about risky social situations, and support them in developing their character and language skills. The theme of Healthy Relationships was used as a vehicle for tackling key issues with Year 10 in a special assembly. A panel of four students were selected to sit on stage and represent the voice of Year 10 girls and boys. A series of quiz-style questions were fired at the panel about healthy relationships and then discussed with the audience. Answers were insightful In the grand finale Year 10 simulated a drum roll whilst Ali added up the scores; the final outcome was 21 points to the boys and 27 points to the girls! The topics covered by PEAK are sensitive and therefore the resources and delivery have been compiled very carefully. Young people in Leicestershire have acted as advisors to Leicestershire Authority and educators to ensure that messages are appropriate and pertinent. Evaluation of the assembly was overwhelmingly positive, with the majority of students in Year 10 indicating that they learned something new about risk taking behaviour in relationships. The year group was unanimous in declaring the assembly to b entertaining but informative. Many students highlighted that the assembly was interactive, fun, but gave serious messages about relationships

4 Mock Interviews 28 volunteers from a wide range of local industries, including 10 members of staff from Aggregate Industries, gave up their day to help our students prepare for the world beyond school. After some preparatory lessons to develop their interview techniques, all students in Year 10 had a mock interview with one of the volunteers, followed by some feedback on their performance. Students also received a certificate to show that they had completed the interview. Comments from Year 10 students included: It helped me gain interview confidence, and They were really interesting and gave me some good advice for the future. Students left the hall with a spring in their step, feeling much more confident about tackling an interview situation. Speaking to an unfamiliar person in a formal situation can be intimidating. The mock interview workshop really helped Year 10 students conquer their fears and develop effective communication skills. Our sincere thanks goes out to all the volunteers for giving up their time.

5 Year 12 Geography Fieldwork Rhyd-y-creuau, North Wales On 12 th March, 13 Year 12 geographers set off for 2 days of fieldwork at the Rhyd-y-creuau field centre in the Snowdonia National Park, to investigate glacial landforms and perception of place in North Wales. On arrival, students put their bags into their rooms before immediately setting off on a walk up the steep valley side, with some students taking this in their stride (literally!) at the front of the group with our two instructors, whilst others hung nearer the back to kindly accompany the teaching staff. We stopped at various points to demonstrate the length of geological time from the start of the Earth to present day, which demonstrated how recent the last glacial period was in relation to other events in Earth s geological history. We then continued to the highest point in the area, hoping to see stunning views of a nearby U-shaped valley which was unfortunately disguised by the thick fog which had descended upon us. A classroom session followed dinner, with students demonstrating good understanding of the topic and applying their new understanding well. Students then had an opportunity to measure striations on exposed bedrock, created in the last glacial period in Snowdonia, recording their results in the field using Geographical Information Systems through the centre s ipads. On our return to the centre, students used chi square to analyse the significance of the data they had collected earlier in the day in addition to data collected elsewhere in Snowdonia. Our final day saw us visit Betws-y-coed, a local village, to investigate whether our perception of place (based on secondary accounts from web searches) matched the reality. It was an excellent opportunity for some students to sample local cuisine, including Welsh cakes, in addition to the experience of using a range of data collection methods which will be vital for their forthcoming non-examined assessment. Students returned tired but with a much improved understanding of the content of their future exams, and ready to begin their nonexamined assessment in the forthcoming term. The next day we set off in the coach to Cwm Idwal, to observe a range of glacial landforms. A cwm, also known as a corrie or cirque (depending on its location) is a feature carved into the bedrock by rotational slip in the glacier a process which our instructor Dan showed through the medium of interpretative dance (ably assisted by Mr Malpass). Most students had a go at replicating the dance moves, some with more gusto than others! Students identified different forms of moraine, as well as climbing atop a Roche moutonnée to decide upon the direction the ice flowed in the Loch Lomond stadial. A number of fighter jets passed overhead during the day, racing along the Nant Ffrancon valley, much to the delight of some students!

6 King Edward VII Sports The year 11 Netball girls have come to the end of another exciting season and not only have they beaten their position from last year, but they have also achieved the highest rank of any Netball team that King Edward has had. The season ended with a tournament where the girls played exceptionally well and came second out of five teams earning them a silver medal. The presentation at the end of the tournament also revealed that the girls came third in their league (out of eight teams) and Amber Joyce received a gold medal for being nominated Woman of the Match the most times. It has been another great year seeing the students develop, achieve and enjoy taking part. The commitment to training at school, and joining a team outside of school, has been wonderful to see. Hopefully this success can continue as they enter the sixth form next year. Girls Netball
