INSIDE PADUA SPORT Term 2, 2015 Letter from a Volunteer Coach Parents of sports kids please take the time to read this letter "Today I heard a comment made about me behind my back. I started to turn around and look, but then decided better of it and kept my eyes on the field. My wife hears things like this more often than I do, because many of you don t know who she is. She tells me what you say. I have received... angry s, full of suggestions, about who should be playing where and how I... lost that day s game for the kids. I thought I d write an open letter to all of you parents, even though I might never send it. I ll start it this way: I am a volunteer. I m the one who answered the call when the league said they didn t have enough coaches. I understand that you were too busy. I have some news for you. I m not retired. I m busy too. I have other children and a job, just like you do. Not only do I not get paid to do this it costs me money. I see you walk up to the game 15 minutes after it started, still dressed for work. Do you know I ve already been here over an hour? Imagine if you had to leave work early nearly every day. I ve never seen you at a practice. I m sure you re plugging away at the office. But I m out here, on the field, trying my best to teach these children how to play a sport they love, while my bank account suffers. I know. I make mistakes. In fact, maybe I m not even that great of a coach. But I treat the kids fairly and with respect. I am pretty sure they like coming to my practices and games, and without me or someone like me, there d be no team for them to play on. I m part of this community too and it s no picnic being out here on this stage like this. It s a lot easier back there with the other parents where no one is second-guessing you. And I also know you think I give my son or daughter unfair advantages. I try not to. In fact, have you ever considered that maybe I m harder on him than on the others? I m sure he hears plenty of criticism at school from classmates, who hear it from you at home, about what a lame coach I am. And if, even unconsciously, my kids are getting a slight advantage because I know them better and trust their abilities, is that the worst thing in the world, considering the sacrifice I m making? Trust me, I want to win too. And if your son or daughter could guarantee we d do that, I d give them the chance. After this game is over, I ll be the last one to leave. I have to break down the field, put away all the equipment and make sure everyone has had a parent arrive to pick them up. There have been evenings when my son and I waited with a player until after dark before someone came to get them. Many nights I m sure you ve already had dinner and are relaxing on the couch by the time I finally kick the mud off my shoes and climb into my car, which hasn t been washed or vacuumed for weeks. Why bother cleaning it during the season? Do you know how nice it would be if, just once, after a game one of you offered to carry the heavy gear bag to my car or help straighten up the field? If I sound angry, I m not. I do this because I love it and I love being around the kids. There are plenty of rewards and I remind myself that while you re at the office working, your kid is saying something that makes us all laugh or brings a tear to my eye. The positives outweigh the negatives. I just wish sometime those who don t choose to volunteer their time would leave the coaching to the few of us who do." Scott Maguire Head of Sport

Is Sport Important? Wow, what a controversial question a tough question. Please don t think I have the only answer or that it s correct, but as a member of the Padua College Community and the Sport Department I have a point of view. Sport plays a role in developing the attributes that will create the characteristics I believe we want in our students so that they have the opportunity become great sons, brothers, students, employees, employers, leaders and eventually fathers. Any successes gained through sport MUST be embedded and related back to real life. The secret of success is that there are no secrets, hundreds of hours of repeated practices and homework. Risking failure and having the courage to do it again and again and again. Having the support network that grows this thought process and habits are key to success in all areas of life. Courage, Mateship, Endurance, Sacrifice (Traits that are chiselled in stone at Kokoda). I know and appreciate that these qualities can be grown by many other pursuits and sport is but one. However, sport and competing in competition develops and exposes all our strengths and weaknesses. Challenges for us all: We all need to stop walking past standards and behaviours we shouldn t accept. We all need to embrace the opportunities of risking failure. We MUST study in English, Math and Science and accept that that the effort and habits to do this relate to success. We MUST be willing to study, work and train when no one is looking. Don t seek gratitude or praise (if it's right, it s RIGHT). Do more and say less. Realize that Padua is the sum of all of us. It s not what you say it s what you do. When this happens we are preparing, we are competing and guess what, you are already winning. What is your brand? What do you stand for? What are you willing to accept? Tony Guilfoyle Director of Coaching

Coaches: Food for Thought The effectiveness of training programs, workout designs, skill development routines and fitness activities are dependent on how engaged the athlete or student is in the activities. A brilliantly designed workout, with skilfully crafted drills and decision making activities are of little value to athletes who are not interested, not concentrating, not focused and not engaged in the program. The one thing that separates great coaching from average coaching is engagement: it s what it s all about. The ability to consistently engage the hearts and minds of your athletes it s what we strive for it is the very essence of coaching- it is what makes coaches (and athletes) feel alive. A training session without engagement is just a bunch of people exercising together; Communication without engagement is just talking; Sports science without engagement is just measurement; Periodisation without engagement is just a plan; Having the world s best facilities and equipment without engagement is just window dressing; Coaching without engagement is not Coaching. So why is engagement so critical? And it is critical it underpins everything. Because athletes (and coaches and managers and staff for that matter) who are truly engaged with what they are doing, consistently train, prepare and compete to their full potential and from potential comes peak performance. No one wins by giving anything less than their best: winning happens by consistently preparing and competing to your full potential. And this is the real gift that all the great coaches possess to be able to turn involvement into commitment to be able to turn desire into action and to be able to turn potential into performance. Athletes and Students need to play and achieve for themselves. They need to trust and believe in you. They will smell a rat a mile away and they will shut down on you straight away. Don t be mistaken, you are not their friend. You need to take them there, lead them there and at times drag them there. Pick them up and carry them on some occasions, but most of all be honest with them. Provide them with vegetables instead of lollies. Sustained success requires uncomfortable moments and conversations. This is not easy, so be prepared to fail on occasions, but I guarantee you will be much richer for the experience and process. 4 AIC Round 4 Reports Senior Rugby BIG MOMENTS As we complete Rd 4 of the Rugby season it s worth reflecting on what the Big Moments are. Certainly the winning of matches are essential as we look at the ladder and reflect on the potential to win, but is the scoreboard where we see the real wins. Is the training (preparation) for the last few years the key? Are the parents/coaches/teachers that have invested time, care and love the key? Is the dedication and persistence of the athlete s science, math or English teacher back in grade1 the key? Is the sum of so many exposures they key? I m conceding that the Big Moments aren t on the score board or indeed even on the field; they happened years ago and are continuing now. We are an accumulation of so many experiences that mesh together to prepare us for challenges that arise. Rugby is a small part of our growth as people and right now all of those efforts, lessons, demands and experiences allow us to enjoy the lessons of both success and failure. My tip is to allow the processes of preparation, training and game time guide you in your pursuits off the paddock. Apply the dedication to study and work as you do to training and be aware of the competition and the competitor that lives outside our college. You will spend many more years earning a living than you will playing on a Rugby field. The Big Moments in your life believe it or not are still coming for you. Reflect on your most recent big moments and note the processes that allowed you to achieve them. Make these processes your habits. Congratulations to all our teams on the weekend. Reflect on your processes and improve on what you did. Your next opposition are already sharpening the edge of their axe, make yours sharper. Thankyou to our coaches, staff and parents who give to our students and support us in making the brand of Padua College better. Students: On behalf of all your coaches, enjoy the physical and mental challenge that is in front of you. Remember: Winning is not a score board, it s an attitude and belief that is earned through hours of dedication and practice. Mr Tony Guilfoyle Director of Rugby

Junior Rugby Grandmother or tails, sir? Anon rugby referee to Princess Anne s son Peter Phillips, Gordonstoun School s rugby captain, for his pre-match coin-toss preference (1995) Padua had 5 teams travel to SEC on Saturday posting 3 wins (8A, 8B and 7A) a draw and a loss. The 7D and 6C travelled to SLC and Villa respectively. Well done to Harry Taylor on being named player of the week for his efforts in scoring five tries. After the Ashgrove round it was pleasing to see that the teams prepared well and played with some great enterprise. My apologies to the 7Ds who had a late venue change. Thanks for your understanding. The 8C team had a bye while the 6s and 5s played against each other on Friday afternoon. With only three rounds remaining it is important that the boys continue to train well and finish the season improved players. From my point of view it seems that the battle at the breakdown is still where we need to work a bit harder cleaner and faster recycle of the ball. Again a big thanks to those junior rugby players who attended the 1st XV team and supported them to a good win against Eddies. This week all junior rugby teams will be playing at Banyo against Iona College. Best wishes to you all. Scott Maguire Head of Sport, 5-8 Rugby Coordinator Senior Football 5 wins, 2 draws was the overall outcome from Saturday s round 4 clash against St Edmund College. A massive improvement results wise compared to the previous rounds thus far. Well done to all teams who were a part of these results. All players need to reflect on these results and continue to strive for improvements at training this week for our upcoming games against Iona this weekend and to see if these efforts can be matched or even bettered. Some special mentions must be made again after this round. The 9A team had an interesting game, down 5-1 at half time, instead of giving up in the 2nd half they re-gathered themselves and won the second half, but overall went down. But at least they showed some fighting spirit. Charles de Blonk Smith scored in the last minute for the 4ths to seal their first win of the season and sent the team into wild celebrations. Ayden Cinello had another productive weekend, scoring a great solo goal in the 2nds and then backing up to play off the bench in the 1sts and play an integral role in their comeback draw after being 2 nil down late in the match. That is why these two players have shared the Player of the Round credits this week. Well done the 2nd XI squad and coach Ben Furhman, who have continued to play some good football and remain undefeated after 4 rounds. The 1st XI again played great football at times and for the majority created many more chances than their opposition in front of goal, unfortunately these chances didn t eventuate into goals. However, late into the game they were 2 nil down and the match seemed lost from the sideline, but credit to the lads, they kept on fighting, keeping their composure and finally converted their chances to secure a 2 all draw late in the game. After last week s last minute loss of the lead to draw, it was a welcome outcome, but again the squad knows they had more chances then their opposition to win the game. I feel if everything clicks, this team will end up putting a big score on an opposition and I feel this has to be sooner rather than later. Finally, to conclude, if anything can be taken from this weekend s results, is that if you persist and hold that character true to your heart, then you will feel successful no matter the results. If one continues to strive for improvement, then you will eventually improve, maybe sometimes faster than others, maybe not as fast. So all players, please don t give up, take some encouragement from this last round and continue to persist for improvement. It will come, don t be a quitter. Mr Dan Cull AIC Football Coordinator

Junior Football Round 4 saw our junior footballers travel out to Ipswich to play St Edmunds. There were a number of excellent performances most notably our 7A team who won convincingly against a strong St Edmunds team. It had been a tough week for the 7As as they had suffered a big defeat in the previous round against Ashgrove. Luck seemed to be against them on Saturday as well as they fell behind 2-0 in the first half despite dominating possession. A goal by Jack Fiorini opened the floodgates and the goals flowed after half time with the game finishing with the score 5-2. They will look to keep this form going against Iona this week. Our 8B team were unlucky to draw 1-1. It seemed they were about to score for the whole match and had a number of goals disallowed. Our player of the week goes to Will Higgins from the 7B team. With some key players missing from the 7B defence Will defended strongly in the face of constant attacks from the St Edmunds forwards. At times it seemed he was singlehandedly keeping us in the contest. Congratulations and well done Will. This week we play at home against Iona. We played a trial against them at the end of term one so we know we will be facing quality opposition. We are planning to use the home ground advantage to our advantage this time around. Michael O'Rourke 5-8 Football Coordinator Chess It is never easy playing away games and this week the game was against Eddies. In previous years we have not travelled well and we are hoping to have a change of fortune in With the musical on this week, key players were missing. This meant changes to our combinations and team dynamics. However, the boys remained positive and eager to perform their best. As round 1 progressed the Padua Knights took out their opponent one game at a time. It was Leigh Mercado to draw first blood as he showed no mercy to his opposing player. The game was over in the first couple of minutes. If you blinked you missed it. Gavin Dhesi, almost missed the bus as he was challenged to a staring competition on the way to the bus. He claimed this was his strategy for the night as he was promoted to the Opens for this round. To my surprise this strategy worked for him as he won his first game coming from a weaker position. It was pleasing to see the new members of the team register their first wins. This was Thomas and Alex who's hard work paid off. At the end of Round 1 we had registered 2 wins 2 draw and 1 loss. A good result considering Eddies have been very strong in previous years. Round 2, saw Jordan Vico play uncharacteristically. His game ONLY lasted 5 minutes. Usually he plays down the clock to win with seconds to spare. I was later told that he forked opponent to take his queen. A fork occurs when you attach a piece with 2 or more pieces at the same time and no matter what moves are made will result in the piece being captured. Both the Intermediate B's and Opens registered draws after the first round. They fought back and managed to turn this around to secure wins for these teams. The intermediate A's never looked like faultering, only loosing 1 point for the night. Check Mate Mr Kevin Peart Chess Coordinator
