1 Weekly Sports Report 31 May Term 2 - Week 7 Inside this edition From the Head of Sport - Individual Achievements - Barbarian and Select Points Basketball and Tennis Trial Information - AIC Round 6 Rugby and Football Draw v St Edmund s Saturday 2 June Rugby & Football Results Tables - Rugby and Football Training Timetables Gym schedule Term 2 - Cross Country Information UPCOMING EVENTS Friday 1 June AIC Chess Round 6 v St Edmund s Saturday 2 June AIC Round 6 Rugby & Football v St Edmund s Friday 8 June AIC Chess Round 7 v Villanova Saturday 9 June AIC Round 7 Rugby & Football v Villanova From the Head of Sport FINAL TWO WEEKS OF THE SEASON! Last weekend we hosted SLC in the majority of our competition games and in a massive round of sport at Ashgrove we hosted Friday night chess fixtures followed by 72 matches of football and rugby on Saturday. Following on from Round 4 against St. Patrick s our students were again fortunate to engage in another round of sport where all year levels played at the same venue. These occasions are unfortunately rare in AIC sport these days but undeniably provide a great sense of school spirit from both colleges involved and our clash with traditional rivals SLC lived up to all expectations in this regard. We would like to thank all the staff, students, parents and families involved in making last Saturday such an enjoyable and successful day. The efforts of our parents and families in supporting our sports canteens was certainly a big highlight of the day and contributed to the strong sense of community spirit evident throughout the day. We hope we can continue this support throughout the remaining two rounds and encourage everyone to be involved where you can. This weekend we play St Edmund s (SEC) for Round 6 of AIC competition in chess, rugby and football. On the weekend, as expected, St Laurence s had been building up to the round against Ashgrove for many weeks and treated it as a grand final. This is a situation that we face most weeks as opposition schools use Ashgrove as the standard for high performance. It is important that we are well prepared for this and make sure that complacency does not set in. There are only two rounds left in the Term 2 sporting season and one week of training remains. All boys are asked to step up their efforts another notch to ensure that Ashgrove finishes off the season in our usual manner. At this stage, we are well in contention for the aggregate shield in chess, rugby and football. The results of the final two rounds will have a big impact on the final standings. As the season draws to a close, please do not forget the efforts of your coaches for the time they have given to you and your team, along with your parents for their time and efforts. 2 From the Head of Sport Finally, our preparations for our Term 3 sports of basketball and tennis will soon commence. Sign ons for these sports have now closed so if you are keen to be involved and missed signing on please contact the following staff members: Basketball Mr Michael Connolly connollym@marash.qld.edu.au Tennis Mr David Miles milesda@marash.qld.edu.au Please see all information later in the newsletter for upcoming trials and training. There is not much time to rest for those students involved in these upcoming sports so please take care of yourself as you approach a busy end of term with all aspects of college life. Mr David Miles Head of Sport Sports Canteen Support As mentioned above, a special thank you to all parents involved in the fabulous response to operating the sports canteens during Saturday s games against St Laurence s. The canteen organisers had never seen so many parents roll up and pitch in particularly parents who have never volunteered at the canteen previously. This response was greatly appreciated. Given the great response last Saturday, the canteen staff encourage parents to return and encourage others to give a helping hand. This certainly makes life easier for all concerned and ensures that customers receive their food and drink promptly! Marist Barbarian and Select Points Each week during the rugby and football season, high performing players from the 1st, 2nd, and A teams in both sports are rewarded with selection in the Barbarian (rugby) and Select (football) Teams of the week. At the conclusion of the season, a team of the season is selected for both sports to be presented at assembly. The Barbarian and Select Teams from Round 5 v St Laurence s are below. WET WEATHER It is inevitable that the weather will cause some games and training to be cancelled. Parents and students are encouraged to download the MCA App for the most up to date announcements regards training and games. SPORT PHOTOS AND VIDEOS The sports department are always looking for photos and videos of the Colleges sporting teams throughout the year. If you wish to share these for use in the Sports newsletter, Blue and Gold, as well as other College publications, we encourage you to please send them to mcasport@marash.qld.edu.au.
