It was fantastic to hear of the improvement in our junior AFL teams in just one year with our Year 6A and Year 8/9 teams putting in great performances to comfortably win their matches. There was another strong round of results in the main AIC cricket and volleyball competition against SPC with 9 wins/3 losses in volleyball and 10 wins/2 losses in cricket. This weekend we are set to match up against traditional rivals St. Laurence s College (SLC). Every weekend our opposition Colleges lift their performances and effort when they play us. This is something we have become used to and is never more so than when we face SLC. We also ask our students to lift their own performances this weekend and raise our own standards in each and every game we play. Strive to maintain a consistently high level of effort throughout your entire match and I am sure the results will fall your way. Good luck to all students! IMPENDING WET WEATHER With rain forecast for this weekend, it is very important that all students and families have access to the College APP, particularly for cricket updates that may occur. Weather can often change quite quickly so we will not be making any cancellations until we are certain the grounds are unplayable. The decision to cancel any CRICKET games will be made via the College APP. If so, any cancellation of morning matches will be made early in the day. Matches played in the afternoon will be given every opportunity to take place. Regular updates will be made throughout the day. With the unpredictability of the weather, students may actually arrive at venues only to find the match cancelled. This is an unfortunate but not uncommon part of playing cricket and we appreciate your patience with this. 2 From the Head of Sport TRAINING SCHEDULES Term 1 training schedules will no longer appear in the newsletter and will be located on the College APP under each sport s own section. Students show be well aware of their training times. TERM 2 SPORT SIGN-ONS It is quite unbelievable that we are now mentioning Term 2 sports but here we are! Sign-ons for Term 2 sport will be available next week and will be sent out via . It is important that we have accurate numbers of boys playing these codes so that teams can be nominated for the AIC competition. All students must complete sign on before FRIDAY MARCH 1 GETTING READY FOR TERM 2 Here are some important things to consider in preparation for Term 2 sport: Playing uniform football/rugby boots, football shirt/rugby jersey, football/rugby shorts Protective gear shin guards, mouthguards, headgear, shoulder pads Water bottle each student should have their own NAMED water bottle to be brought to training and games IMPORTANT REMINDER Term 1 sports (AFL, cricket, volleyball, swimming and cross country) all take priority over any Term 2 preparations. If there is a clash then students are expected to maintain their commitments to their Term 1 sport. Please below for some more important reminders: 1. Presentation how we present ourselves is a strong reaction on our school. Saturday sport 2. is the ideal medium to create a positive public image. This involves ALL students wearing the correct uniform to and from AIC matches. Please see the uniform section below for an example of appropriate attire for Cricket and Volleyball. 3. Training coaches spend a lot of time planning seasons and training sessions for our teams. It is only fair that students are organised, on time and ready to train for every session. 4. Absence students are not to send a message about missing training through another student. Please your coach in advance about why you will miss training. 5. Sports Contacts Should you have any questions regarding AFL, Cricket, Volleyball, or Swimming, please contact the relevant coordinators of each sport in the first instance. COMMUNICATION With so much happening in Term 1, it is important that students and parents regularly check the main sources of information to receive updates and changes to draws, training timetables etc. Each week, information can be found in: The Buzz Newsletter (draws, training timetables, general information & contacts) The Marist College Ashgrove APP please download if you have not already done so! Sports noticeboard (outside the gym) Morning and afternoon notices s (students are reminded to check these regularly!) Mr David Miles Head of Sport WET/EXTREME WEATHER It is inevitable that the weather will cause some games and training to be cancelled. Parents and students are encouraged to download the MCA App for the most up to date announcements regards training and games. SPORT PHOTOS AND VIDEOS The sports department are always looking for photos and videos of the Colleges sporting teams throughout the year. If you wish to share these for use in the Sports newsletter, Blue and Gold, as well as other College publications, we encourage you to please send them to mcasport@marash.qld.edu.au Student Achievements - - Congratulations to Alex Bibo and Matt Walker who were named as co-captains of the 2019 MCA Swimming team. 3 Cricket Wrap Up Saturday s round of Cricket against St Patrick s College was another successful weekend for Ashgrove with 10 out of 12 aggregate teams accomplishing victory. The Opens age group is very strong this year, with all six teams been dominant in the first two rounds. An entertaining match between Ashgrove 4ths and 5ths which saw over 430 runs scored in a T20 match included a lot of outstanding individual performances. The 4ths were helped along by Will O Connor and Max Curnow who scored 96* and 60 respectively, and Charlie Wilkinson taking 3/9 from 4 overs. Harry McVeigh managed 92 for the 5ths to take them to a narrow defeat. However, it was Nick Fisher for the 6ths who managed the days highest score of 181! While the 9As managed a tight win against St Patrick s on McMahon oval, the 9B s managed to blow away St Patrick s on Cameron oval, proving the depth of our cricket program. Batting first, the 9B s put on 246 in 33 overs with Oscar Burg, Reggie McMillan and Lachlan Ford scoring 51, 63 and 59 respectively leading to a 131 run victory. Congratulations to our 7A cricket team who secured a thrilling win on the last ball of the match against St. Pat s last Saturday. The team set St. Pat s a target of 147 on Cameron Oval and while they began their innings well, every time they looked like taking control our Ashgrove boys broke through. With two runs to win off the final ball, the Ashgrove boys managed another classy run out reminiscent of the 1999 world cup semi-final victory to close out the match. It took contributions from all players in the team with the bat, ball and especially in the field to secure the win. Well done to players on both teams for a close and well-fought game. This week we will face an even bigger challenge against St Laurence s College, who always show up to try and beat Ashgrove. For many of our aggregate teams, this week is an important step towards securing a premiership.
