123 LAURIES SPORT Sports Office Contacts: Telephone (07) Wet Weather (07) For updated Sporting information, please visit curriculum/sport/ DIRECTOR OF SPORT REPORT Well hasn t time flown by. We are now in Week 5 of the school year, Round 4 of cricket and volleyball is this weekend and the AIC swimming championships are upon us next week. This week we will be conducting our rugby and football sign on so that brings us closer to those beautiful brisk mornings of winter and standing on side lines at Runcorn. Rugby/Football Sign On Students will register their interest in playing Term 2 rugby and football this week. Primary students will do this in classes while secondary boys will do it during breaks on Wednesday (Rugby) and Friday (Football). It is important that students do sign on and register an interest. This information will be collated and allows us to send the season information out to all parents. I would ask that we refrain from contacting the sports office and directors of each sport until the season information letters come out. These documents will answer the majority of questions. These will be sent out to every family whose son signed on early next week. Industrial Action Thursday 25th February The whole community should now be aware that industrial action will be taken place at the College on Thursday 25th February. All College co curricular sport will go ahead as scheduled on this day. This includes cricket, swimming and volleyball in the morning and cricket and volleyball training in the afternoon. Full supervision and normal training will be given at every session! The College is taking the opportunity on the day to begin the skill assessment of our Year 7 students for rugby and football. Year 7 parents should have received a detailed from the College. As a general guide students will complete periods 1 3 as normal and then travel to Runcorn (by bus) for basic skill assessment. Boys will return to the College for normal dismissal at 3:00pm. Relationship with External Groups ISSUE 38: 24 February to 1 March 2016 St. Laurence s is very lucky to have an excellent relationship with a number of community groups. These include a number of sporting clubs. We would definitely not be able to offer the vast sporting program we do without this great relationship. Last Friday s swimming age championships could not have been possible without Yeronga Park Swimming Complex and the Yeronga Park Swimming Club. Cricket training at the College would be impossible without the use of Souths Cricket Club s nets. The College has a great relationship with Souths Rugby Club. They allow our preseason development teams to train at their grounds and we play all of our development squad trial fixtures there. In fact our first trial for our First XV development squad and Junior Development squad will be played at Souths this afternoon. We would all be aware of the wonderful result that Souths had in winning the Brisbane Premier Grade Rugby Competition. As a result they are hosting the Australian Club Championship game this weekend at Chipsy Wood Oval. The game is this Saturday against Sydney champions Eastwood. Game kicks off at 4:30pm. I would encourage all of our rugby community to get along and support the magpies!

Round 3 AIC Review Last weekend was a very successful round against SPLC. It was very pleasing to see the large number of teams that found a way to win in tight situations. The First XI Cricket team chased down a large total with a couple balls to spare, equally as exciting our 7Blue cricket team scored the winning runs in their game off the last ball (both exciting games almost finished at exactly the same time!) Round 4 AIC Preview This weekend we play our closest rivals in Villanova College. I have heard some fond stories from old boys recent and distant past about the battles that have occurred with the Villanova boys both on and off the field of play! Villanova is always very strong at cricket and they have started the season very well. All of our cricket teams will need to ensure they play to their best ability to be competitive against the College who right now would be the favourite to win the cricket aggregate. Villanova have made no secret they are improving their volleyball and a quick look at the premiership tables for each division show that Villanova are in a very strong position with a large number of teams on top of the tables. Good luck to all boys for this weekend s round of fixtures Eddie Wallace Director of Sport ewallace@slc.qld.edu.au SPORTS ADMINISTRATION REPORT SWIMMING UPDATES 2016 AIC Swimming Championships Congratulations to the students who were selected in our AIC Swim Team announced today at lunchbreak. Jane Fawcett Sports Administration Manager (Mondays and Wednesdays) jfawcett@slc.qld.edu.au Bear and Forbear STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING REPORT Below is a blog post I came across from a top training studio called Science of Fitness. We don t always feel like doing what is necessary, but when we are able to, it gives us discipline to help succeed. Bear and Forbear. Acknowledge the pain but continue on your path. In life there are times when you will be cut. To the world, the wound will reveal what lies within you. Strength? Steel? Air? Nobody is born with a steel backbone or an unshakable will. Sure, some people have inherent favourable genetics. But for most people it is hard work that make the spine of steel or wool. Even for those genetically gifted, it is the gifted ones who worked hard that we hear about. But the simple act of training is more often than not, the answer. It improves you physically and mentally. It is never too late to start. It will make your life better. Have you ever not felt like training but turned up anyway and got through a session? That's you forging steel. Have you ever been in the midst of a body burning lung squeezing set and all you could think of doing was quitting? But you kept going? You did one more rep then you thought possible? That is you being better. Your mind and body are joining forces to bear and forbear. A skill that can then be taken into other aspects of life. Stuck in a tough position school, at home, life? Know you can work your way through it. There is always people to help support and believe in you.

VOLLEYBALL REPORT Aggregate Update prior to VILLA Round: Current 2016 Aggregate Position: SLC 3rd, VILLA 2nd 2015 Aggregate Position: SLC 1st, VILLA 6th Well we look to be finding our groove as we had another successful round versus St Peter s College winning the day 9 3. Therefore, it is decreed to be another Zooper Dooper round! Boys can collect their ice block at a volleyball assembly in the theatre on Friday at morning tea. After playing our traditional Aggregate rivals Iona last weekend and doing so well, I wasn t sure how the boys would go backing up the following weekend. In NRL circumstances it s like the statistic of how many teams get up for the battle against the reining premiers but then lose against a lower ranked side the following week. I am always conscious of the effort the boys put into their games and how much they all want to win. This can sometimes lead to an unhealthy focus on the result rather than the process. I think our program s success has been derived from ensuring that the processes are well drilled at training and that the players have techniques that withstand the pressures of game situations and thus we are able to close games out more often than not as a result. Against Iona where we found ourselves in so many close games but managed to find a way to scrape through and win, there was always a danger that the boys could be flat against St Peter s. Most teams on the weekend however played extremely well and played consistent volleyball. A major factor in being successful on a volleyball court is seizing momentum. Once this momentum is on our side of the net this is where you can break sets wide open and build towards victory. In matches when teams tend to side out (which is a volleyball term for going tit for tat with points) then pressure builds and the set can become anyone s. I encourage all our teams to try to seize their opportunity when they feel like they are on top or in a strong rotation. Teams should emphasise the need to try to work in multiples of 2 points rather than 1. Then once you win 2 points aim for the 3rd as this gives a nice little buffer for when or if the tide of momentum changes. Preparation is key for a strong performance individually and as a team. I could not be happier with how our training sessions have been going overall. Our weekly attendance has been wonderful and this has aided in our strong start to the season. Unfortunately I understand some boys ventured to Good Life festival last Friday and jeopardised their own and their team s preparations by arriving very tired and lethargic to their games and as a result played below their normal standards. I would like to encourage all the boys to ensure they are getting good sleep before their games to enable them to walk off the court and regardless of the result know they gave 100% effort and as coaches we ask no more. I would like to say a big thank you to the tremendous support the First VI received from our loyal supporters. Playing at Chandler is very different to the intimate Brady Hall. The sheer size of the arena makes it very difficult to create the atmosphere which Lauries Volleyball has become famous for in recent years. It doesn t help when the visiting team only has a handful of supporters. Our supporters were treated to a very ruthless display of power hitting by captain Davies Kwaku, a dominate blocking display by Kelsey Doyle and sublime passing by Elian Ware. The team is gathering momentum after two strong wins and the support they have received each week has been a significant contributor to this. This week we face our local rivals, Villanova. We have played them in 2 trials since late last year and their program I believe has benefited greatly from this. They have started the season off convincingly with dominate aggregate wins over Ashgrove, Eddies and St Pat s. We will all need to be ready for the intensity that a local rivalry brings. Regardless of what results transpired in the trials this in a new battle and each point, each set and therefore each match will require focus and hunger in order for our boys to come out on top. A reminder that boys who are on duty need to be at the venue for their scheduled duty time. Unfortunately some boys for the earlier game did not turn up and this made it very difficult to cover. It s not a professional look for the school when we are unable to fulfil our responsibilities of providing linesmen and scorers. The boys are asked each week to check the volleyball noticeboard and parents are sent this list also via on Thursday so it is important for the remaining weeks of the year that this is done well. If a boy is unable to fulfil his duty he must

find a replacement prior to Saturday otherwise he faces similar consequences as the boys have received this week. This week is the half way mark for the season. We have many teams currently sitting in the top 3 for their division and some teams who can turn their season around with picking up wins in the back end of the season. As always I leave you with a clip that showcases the excitement that Volleyball creates at the highest level Click here I wish all the boys luck this weekend and hope they enjoy the battle that lies ahead for volleyball supremacy in the derby. 8 CRICKET REPORT Aggregate Update prior to VILLA Round: Current 2016 Aggregate Position: SLC 1st, VILLA 2nd 2015 Aggregate Position: SLC 3rd, VILLA 2nd The St Peter s cricket program has improved over the past few years and this meant most of our teams had a close tussle to win their games last Saturday. Leading into the weekend Lauries were sitting on top of the aggregate table against all the other AIC schools. We won seven out of nine aggregate games while dropping only two games for the day. Therefore after three fixture rounds we find that our aggregate points still have us leading the competition. It was very pleasing to see the close results seemed to fall in our favour as opposed to the Iona matches. It shows that we were willing to play some hard cricket and not give in to the opposition when they asserted pressure. A number of the games were in the balance right up until the last few overs, as was our First XI team who won with only four balls remaining. Mr Wigan was very impressed with his team s efforts and their individual ability to do their job. Many positives came out of last weekend but I would like to remind parents that your assistance is needed when it comes to sharing the umpiring and scoring duties for a match. If everyone shares these duties it works out that you need only assist once throughout the season. This is not the case for most of the teams as most of the volunteer work unfortunately is being done by the same people. For the remainder of the season, if we have no volunteers for a team the coach will forfeit the game as it s impossible to coach and manage the boys along with umpiring and scoring at the same time. As a parent, could you please ask the coach if they need assistance as this can only benefit your son and his team. If you re unsure of the rules for umpiring or scoring, I m sure the coach would be only too happy to assist/advise. Some awesome results from last weekend are as follows; Dan Seaton, 6A 52no, great knock Dan. Oliver Lunt, 7A 3/20, bamboozled opposition, was on a hatrick. Max Griffiths, 7B 67, when team was two for not many. Jackson Goss, 7B 42, great partnership with Max when it was needed. Jackson Hay, 8C 25 and 3/12 outstanding says coach Ed Terry. Tom Wilson, 8C 33 great knock. Sam Collins, 9 White 43no and 3/2 a definite MVP. Liam O Sullivan, 4ths 5/13 awesome figures off 5 overs breaking two partnerships. Fergus Dearsley, 4ths 52no batting no6 after a top order collapse. Raveen Salgado 3rds 40 yet again. Billy Rutherford, 1st XI 33 off 32 under lots of pressure. This week s games should be treated like a Grand Final match. Best of luck. John Roberts Director of Cricket jroberts@slc.qld.edu.au

SWIMMING REPORT The Latest Splash Last Friday night the College held the 2016 Swimming Age Championships at Yeronga Pool. There were plenty of close races with the Age Champions being named at the end of the evening shown below. Special mention to our Open Champ and swim captain Lachlan Pigdon a great way to finish his SLC swimming career. Congratulations to all the boys who participated on the night and also to all the parents and staff who helped out to make it such an enjoyable evening. Special thanks goes to Dennis Drummond and the Yeronga Swimming Club for running the electronic timing during the evening and Anthony Neven our official starter. The SLC AIC team was announced today during second break. The list of students who were selected can be found below. All boys who have swum for SLC this season need to be thanked for their efforts thus far in making 2016 such an enjoyable one. For those boys swimming at Chandler next Thursday we expect to see you in the pool as often as possible leading up to the big event. This Friday the AIC team will have a team training session at Yeronga Pool straight after school. The boys will be transported to the pool by bus, leaving the college promptly at 3:15. Swimmers need to be collected from Yeronga at 5:00pm. The afternoon will consist of a short training session, any necessary swim offs, relay changes and distribution of racing skins. All boys must have their own SLC cap to compete at the AIC championships (purchased from the Laurie s shop). A sausage sizzle and drinks will be provided to the boys as a way to celebrate the 2016 season. NOTE: Friday s session is for the selected team & reserves only. I would like to thank all the boys who trained hard but missed selection in the AIC team. I encourage you to train hard over the off season to increase your chances of selection next year. This is a very important part of the preparation for the AIC Championships and must be attended by all swimmers. After the session the boys will be given their racing skins. The team will celebrate their season thus far with a BBQ after this training session. The squad will be transported to Yeronga by bus departing the college promptly at 3:15pm. All students need to be collected from Yeronga no later than 5:00pm All members of the AIC Team need to attend training as much as possible during the lead up to AIC. For those swimmers who have had a limited preparation it is vital that you train well this week. Please organise your week with consideration to the fact that this is the final week of school swimming. Danny O Sullivan Director of Swimming dosullivan@slc.qld.edu.au
