1 19 February 2015 I Wet Weather Line Head of Sport and Activities Mr Dave Capra Three weeks into our sporting year and it is great to see our students and staff getting into the rhythm of training and competition or fixtures. Each week it is great to see the quality of cricket, volleyball, canoe polo, water polo and swimming increase. With the improvement it is also great to see the boys bonding in their teams and sharing both a common love for their chosen sports and shared pride in themselves and their College that they represent so well. With Outdoor Cricket commitments (and no washouts in 2014) I haven t had the chance to see the boys play indoor cricket since I had the opportunity to stop in last Saturday morning and I couldn t believe the quality and pace of the games that the boys were playing Our lover of all sports (except cricket) Mr Jones often tells me that cricket is a great opportunity to watch grass grow this couldn t be said for indoor cricket! All boys are actively involved, with batting, bowling and fielding at a furious pace the sweaty faces and big smiles reminded me more of a football or rugby match then a cricket game. Congratulations to Mr Donatini and the many teachers who give up their Saturday mornings to run such a great program. In just three weeks we have a engaged with a wide variety of schools in cricket, volleyball and swimming and in particular we have appreciated the chance to engage with our EREA counterparts Nudgee College and Gregory Terrace who have sought to find opportunities with the boys in green, white and blue. As the sporting year plays out (pardon the pun) we are looking forward to the opportunity to continue to engage with our EREA mates as well as a variety of other schools in the Brisbane and SE QLD Region. Our thanks to GT and NC for their support as we dive (pardon again) into this next phase of our life as a sporting College. Australian Football AFL is a big sport here at the College and with our sign on day held over the weekend, 2015 promises to be another great year for returning and new players to enjoy playing for the mighty Irish. We have also been pleased to see a large number of past students choosing to remain in contact with the College and play for the ATC JAFC. The sign on is still open and we would love to see more of our current, future and past students to join us this season. AFL co-exists nicely with football (soccer) and rugby at the College and many boys choose to play 2, even 3 codes for ATC. Below you will find the sign on link for ATC JAFC which you can use to register your son. If you would like any more information please do not hesitate to contact Brett Cashmere our AFL Coaching Coordinator, Fiona Kearney our AFL Admin and Integrity Officer. Click here for ATC JAFC SIGN ON Wet Weather At the time of writing (Wednesday evening) it looked like we are in for an interesting couple of days weatherwise. We will be releasing regular updates via the Ambrose Treacy College Facebook page and on the Wet Weather Line ( ). With so many great events scheduled for our boys over the coming 72 hours, we do not wish to cancel too far head of time but will ensure sufficient notice for parents to organise transport and alternative arrangements. If by the time you read this newsletter we have had the anticipated mm of rain, my optimism for a full round of sport might appear somewhat naive! I hope you have a fantastic weekend and that if sport goes ahead it is an enjoyable experience for all involved! Go the Reds this weekend! Warriors Go Brach! Dave Capra
2 Athletic Performance Coordinator Mr Luke Donatini I firmly believe that one of the biggest hindrances in becoming truly successful in your chosen area (be it sport or other) is poor time management. For me, as a coach, time management for an athlete (at any age) is all about getting the right balance. Being able to train well and completing the required work with a good balance of rest, recovery and other interests. A well rounded young athlete needs to ensure that they have a good balance of: Training (sport, culture, music) Sleep Study Rest (down time/time for themselves) Family life (interaction with parents and siblings/cousins etc) Friend time (socialization with others their mates!) The real challenge is the ability to fit this all into our busy daily/weekly/monthly life style. If you were to reflect right now on your own life (just one week) and break your average week into the above points, what would the allocation of time to each stack up like? Lack of sleep, didn t spend much time with family, with friends.... Quality sports practice is vital for sporting success but as a school age student so is the ability to find time to study, to play, to get good quality rest (sleep). For any quality training session to take place the athlete needs to be ready to go (not tired, worn out and in a negative head space ) at the start of the session. I encourage all parents to sit down with your son/s and do up a weekly time management plan. Plot out everything that your son does each day in a regular average week before school, during school (lunchtimes), after school, evenings and on weekends. Once you have done this, monitor the days when your son is really bright and cheery, the day where he appears tired and stressed etc. Use your weekly planner to see if there is any correlation. If there is, you may need to make some adjustments to your son s weekly routine. Often we do not realise what an average week looks like unwe actually see it written down in front of us. A WELL BALANCED lifestyle with ROUTINE, is essential for a successful, happy young athlete/adolescent. I often find with the athletes I work with, they achieve the greatest success general) when they are happy, not stressed, relaxed and well rested. They appear to be able to focus better, with the retention of the needed gross and fine motor patterns and skill development. til (in
3 Aquatics Coordinator Mr Paul Jones SWIMMING This Friday night will see a team from Ambrose Treacy College go to Centenary Pool to take on Brisbane Boys College and Gregory Terrace in a three way meet. We were only able to select 6 swimmers from each age group, which has been a difficult process. The selections were made based on swimmers that made the West Taylor Bridge team first and then the few remaining positions were given to boys that have been training exceptionally well but didn t make the WTB team. All boys selected on this team have received letters and all other swimmers will have racing opportunities in a few weeks time. Thursday night swimming club is coming into its third week of operation. Everyone is welcome to come along and try and it is a great opportunity to learn some racing skills over distances that you are comfortable swimming. Ambrose Treacy swimming club will see 7 swimmers competing this weekend at the QLD 50m sprint championships. We wish these swimmers well as they become the first ATC swimmers competing at a state championship. The ATC swimming club is open to both internal and external members. Next Wednesday will see 18 ATC students representing the college at the Metropolitan West swimming trials held at the Sleeman Sports and Aquatic Centre. We wish these students well as they strive to make the Met West team for the upcoming QLD schools championships. The ATC interhouse swimming carnival will be held on Friday 27 February. This will be the first full school interhouse sporting event for the college and it will be very exciting to see which house is going to stamp their sporting dominance on the school. All parents are welcome to come along for the day and support their favoured colour. WATER POLO The water polo competition went into week 9 last week which created the game of season that no one likes. ATC 1 played ATC 2 which means we are guaranteed a win and a loss. ATC 2 put up a great effort against the older and more experienced ATC 1 team, but in the second half, they weren t able to match the pace of ATC 1. We saw an exceptional game from Matthew Theissen in the ATC 2 team and an exceptional team effort from the ATC 1 team with the play and scoring spread around all players. This week ATC 1 play at 1.20pm and ATC 2 play at 2.40pm. All games are played at Musgrave Park Swimming Pool. TRIATHLON After a long six month preparation our top level triathletes head to Hervey Bay this weekend for the State Triathlon and Aquathlon Titles. With multiple disciplines this sport takes a huge amount of time, commitment and toughness to succeed and our boys have left nothing in the tank in their preparation for this. We would like to wish Josh Nowland, Tom Newell, Calum Barter, Patrick Newell, Tom Kearney, Joe Newell and Mitchell Densley the very best of luck this weekend. Our thanks to Mr Finn and Mr Scanlon for the many hours of training that they have put into getting these boys ready for this opportunity.
4 Cricket Coordinator Mr Brett Henschell ATC teams acquitted themselves well on Saturday against a mix of Churchie, IGS and BGS teams, recording four wins from eleven matches. Year 5 once again posted the best result with three wins. Come on 5A! 7A recorded their third win in a row to start the season off in great fashion whilst 4A was not to be out done by their older colleagues chalking up their third win from as many starts in Brisbane North junior club cricket. A number of other teams worked their way into good position to win the match but failed to capitalize. Players certainly need to keep the good delivery out when batting but must be prepared to play an attacking stroke when the loose delivery presents. Too many deliveries are passing by unpunished down the leg side. On the other side of the ledger, too many deliveries are going down the leg side when ATC is bowling and batsmen from the other schools are jumping all over these deliveries to score runs. Our line must improve to make it harder for the opposition batsmen to score and keep the number of wides/sundries to a minimum. Training Session times: Year 4 Thursday afternoon (3:15-4:30pm) Year 5 & 6 Tuesday afternoon (3:15-4:30pm)and Thursday morning (6:45-8:00am) Year 7 & 8 Tuesday morning (6:45-8:00am) and Wednesday afternoon (3:15-4:30pm) Indoor Cricket Tuesday afternoon (3:15-4:30pm) and Friday morning (6:45-8:00am) Cricket Intensives Monday afternoon (any time between 3:15pm and 5:00pm) for boys of any Year group who may desire a little extra coaching (user pays system) ATC teams play Gregory Terrace from Year 5 to Year 8 in Round 4 this Saturday in what presents as another great opportunity for our boys to test themselves against another strong cricket school.
