1 11 February 2015 I Wet Weather Line Head of Sport and Activities Mr Dave Capra Over the weekend the ATC sport program really stepped up a gear with the indoor cricket program and Year 4 Paddle Play commencing, our swimmers attending their first interschool meet at Nudgee College, our Water Polo teams entered their second round of the season and a massive round of cricket against Nudgee College and in the BNJCA competition, saw over 300 of our boys at the crease and in the field! On top of this we held our annual AFL sign on day which was a great success! At the AFL Sign On Day it was fantastic to see our new teachers and coaching staff Ms Webb, Mr Koimans, Mr Mapleton and Mr Pickering out on the park running games and AFL activities for our footy players. Our Brisbane Lions Irish Ambassador Pearce Hanley was out on the field mixing it with the boys who loved the opportunity to spend time with an elite level player. There will be more information later in this newsletter regarding sign on, however please ensure that if your son does wish to play AFL for ATC, that he registers online using the Sporting Pulse link that was ed to all parents at the beginning of the week. We will be working our timetables and transport logistics so that boys can play rugby or football and AFL without experiencing too many clashes. Please contact Fiona Kearney if you have any queries. Life lessons from sport. At last week s Academic Assembly, Ms Little talked about Cathy Freeman s 2000 Olympics 400m Gold Medal as an example of persistence and personal excellence. At our Ash Wednesday Liturgy yesterday, Mr Finn and Mr Warr talked about numerous different athletes who had overcome adversity to achieve or to create history through powerful actions that captured the hearts and minds of our world. I have always felt that sport should not be the object, rather the vehicle for personal growth for our young men. I could be wrong, but I feel that it is through sport that boys learn humility, they understand and experience sacrifice, they experience disappointment and elation and that they learn the value of hard work and appreciate the results that will come through dedication and commitment. Love of the game and mateship should always be the overriding principles governing sport! In my travels around our different venues over the past few weeks I have seen many examples of our boys learning and growing through sport. I have been elated to hear stories of boys who have missed out being selected in the team, they had set their sights on being selected in and have gone home to mums and dads asking to spend more time at the nets, to practise particular elements of their game. Rather than being overcome with disappointment, not reaching their goal has lit a fire in their belly and galvanised their determination to succeed. For this first time I witnessed Daniel Woodrow swim competitivley, 15 months of hard work and training paying off as he easily outswam his competitors. The early mornings, sore shoulders, searing lungs and weary legs from training a distant memory in the wake (pardon the pun) of a great swim. IN THIS ISSUE Page 1 2 Head of Sport Report Pages 3-4 Indoor Cricket/Cross Country Pages 5-6 Cricket Pages 7 8 Swimming/Water Polo Pages 9-10 AFL / Rugby I saw the 6A team fall one run short of beating Nudgee College, the disappointment ever so brief as they rallied around each other and vowed to go one better next year. 2 ADD DATE I Wet Weather Line Head of Sport and Activities Mr Dave Capra Amongst many great moments, two small, yet significant events stood out over the weekend for me. The first was on Friday evening at the Nudgee College pool, after hearing the seniors from BSHS, Terrace and Nudgee belt out their war cries, our swim squad came together and recited our War Cry with every bit of passion, pride and determination that we could ever ask from our lads. The courage that this showed from a younger, smaller group of boys was genuine and it turned heads all around the venue. The second event was on Saturday morning in the 7A game when Ollie McAvoy wasn t able to bat as we had 12 players in our match. When I told Ollie he wouldn t bat today but would next week there was no complaint, no sign of a whinge, just an acceptance that today he would focus his skills on the fielding innings and supporting his mates at the crease. Later when we were fielding, Charlie Neumann who was captaining asked me if he could give his allocated overs to Ollie so that he could have an extra bowl because he missed out on batting. Ollie s determination and effort in the field and his quality bowling was rewarded with a wicket and I was rewarded with a lesson in leadership, humility and sacrifice from Charlie. 4 Athletic Performance Coordinator -Mr Luke Donatini Cross Country Well ATC Cross Country is just growing from strength to strength. With 55 students and approximately a dozen parents and staff all participating at last Tuesday morning Trail Running, it was a sight to behold as we all hit the local streets and parks. Tuesday 16 February Trail Running Next Tuesday (16 February) we will run some of the trails of Mt Coot-tha. This will be a VERY challenging trail run and not for the faint hearted. It is a trail that is a steep climb up followed by a steep decent that is uneven underfoot and varying terrain. Without discouraging those who have been attending, we are just making everyone who is intending on participating aware that Tuesday s Mt Coot-tha s trail run will be very challenging and difficult for some. Meeting Venue Tuesday 16 February: Mt Coot-tha Reserve (J C Slaughter Falls Car Park) - Mt Coot-tha Reserve is located off Mt Coot-tha Road/ Sir Samuel Griffith Drive, Mt Coot-tha or ATC College at the normal meeting spot. Meeting Time Tuesday 16 February: 6.30am drop off by parents at school or 6.45am at Mt Coot-tha. Transportation back to ATC: We will have both College buses available to transport students back to ATC (total of 32 seats). Parents who are intending on staying and joining in, if you are able to assist with transportation of boys back to the College, it would be appreciated (should we have great numbers attending). Next Weeks Cross Country Training Days Next week we will have the following training days and venues available for students wishing to be involved in Cross Country: Tuesday Morning (6.30am to 7.50am): Trail Run (as outlined above) students, parents and staff all welcome. Wednesday Morning (6.45am to 7.50am): Cross Country Preseason Running. Please meet outside the College s Edmund Rice Building at 6.45am. Training will be conducted around the College. Thursday Morning (6.45am to 8.00am): Cross Country Preseason. Please meet outside the College s Edmund Rice Building at 6.45am. Training will be conducted around the College. Friday Morning (6.30am to 7.40am): Cross Country Fig Tree Pocket River Run. Please meet at the Fig Tree Pocket Equestrian Centre, Fig Tree Pocket Road, Fig Tree Pocket at 6.30am SHARP. We will bus the boys back to ATC at the conclusion of training. ATC XC WARRIORS RUN TALL, RUN FAST & KILL THE FINAL HILL

5 ATC Cricket Coordinator Mr Brett Henschell Cricket Inclement weather and vandalism caused a number of changes to venues and match times on Saturday and I thank parents and students for their understanding and flexibility. In the end, all teams managed a game and that s what it s all about. ATC teams played well against Nudgee College, Padua College, Villanova College and Valleys in Years 5-9 recording five wins, the second tie of the season (5B against Nudgee), and a number of narrow losses. The number of wides delivered by ATC bowlers is reducing but is still too high. Teams averaged just over one wide per over whilst our aim as a cohort is one wide every two overs. Achieve this lower rate and narrow losses become strong wins. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Sport Canteen Parents needed Saturday mornings to help on the canteen. Please click here for VolunteerLocal and donate 45 mins of your time. Thank you! Notable performances were Alexander Bradshaw (1/8 and 36 runs from 26 deliveries for 7B in a great run chase against Nudgee), Joshua Ryan (opened the batting and scored 19 runs across 25 overs for 8B in the face of some very good bowling from Nudgee) and Cooper Beachy-Head (25 runs and 5/8 for U10 Cork against U10 Donegal). Parents are requested to provide coaches and Year Level Coordinators with as much notice as possible in regard to absences. Obviously, this is not possible with Saturday morning illness but boys can be shifted between teams to ensure maximum participation on match day if absences are known in advance. Morning skills training is underway and well attended. Whilst team training is compulsory, skills training is optional and open to boys of all Year levels. Boys can choose to attend none, one, two or all three skills trainings. No registration is required nor a permanent commitment. Skills training is conducted 6:45am-8:00am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. The Cricket Intensives program, led by Mr Gary Jones, is conducted 3:15pm-4:45pm Monday afternoons at Jack Bowers Oval. This is an opportunity for boys of all Year groups and standards to gain a little extra cricket coaching during the week. No registration is required nor commitment to attend every Monday. A boy may feel he needs help with his bowling action or forward defence or catching etc. He is able to go down to the nets on a Monday afternoon and receive some tuition from a qualified HCA coach from 3:15pm. He may be there for 30 minutes, an hour, or the entire period. It does not matter but it is a user pays system and the cost is $ Coaching could be in the form of one on one, small group or large group, depending on the number of boys attending and the aspect of their game requiring attention. Good luck to luck to all this Saturday. Have fun!

7 Aquatics Coordinator Mr Paul Jones Squad and Club Swimming SWIM CLUB is on again this Thursday night starting at 6pm. All welcome. Events in all strokes over 25m and 50m. This night is for all ages of swimmers and gives a great chance to develop some racing skills in a fun environment. District Swimming: Well done to the 10 boys who made it through the district swimming competition held on Monday. There was tough competition from the other schools. The following boys will now head to regional swimming trials and hopefully qualify for State School Championships in March. Well done to: Tim Geers, Pat Keyser, Sean Bennett, Nick Morris, Hugo Hart, Joe Newell, Sam Kearney, James Ellis, Seb McCormack and Jack Scott. MET WEST REGIONAL TRIALS Trials for Met West swimming will be held for all ages, 10 yrs 18 yrs at Chandler on Wednesday 24th February. All swimmers for this meet will be notified in the next week. DATE CLAIMER: QCIS SWIMMING CARNIVAL Friday 4 March We look forward to this first event on the QCIS calendar. This is where our swim team get a chance to produce the results of the hard training they are currently putting in.

8 ATC Aquatics Coordinator Mr Paul Jones Water Polo U13 Wrap: With 10 rounds tucked away, the boys needed a win to even get a sniff of finals and they weren t going to give that chance away. After trailing 3-1 at quarter time, the boys fought back to a sensational 6-9 win keeping their finals hopes alive. What made the win even more enjoyable to Coach was that every player did their bit for the team when needed. This was one of those all played awesome moments that should make every family member proud. Super special mentions to Coach Nadia who couldn t be with us this week and Mathew Thiesen, who although having a busted up hand still made a brilliant effort to come watch his buddy s play Waterpolo!!! U15 Wrap: As always, our U15 s were 100% committed to the cause taking on a very experienced Sunny Coast Blue. The score is not what mattered for the boys, more importantly they have really focused on their own teams improvement over the season and they should all be extremely proud of themselves. At times the boys ripped through the SC defence making their attacks look effortless. I m sure with another year in U15 s next season these boys will enjoy the fruits of their labour. Very honourable effort by all.
