1 12 February 2015 I Wet Weather Line Head of Sport and Activities Mr Dave Capra With another great week of sport notched up for ATC boys, coaches and parents are well and truly into the routines of training and competition. It has been a frenetic start to the 2015 sporting year and I would like to thank boys, parents and staff for their energy, patience and enthusiasm for the many sport and activity offerings at the College. As we approach our next round of offerings with Cross Country pre-season, Football and AFL Pre-season conditioning and Armidale training beginning, I am looking forward to seeing even more ATC boys stepping forward to either return to a sport they love or to try their hand at something new. Sport at ATC is a great medium for life lessons and our hope is that each boy at ATC can find a sport that offers them enjoyment, achievement and the opportunity to grow as an individual. ATC JAFC Sign On Day Sunday 15 February 10.00am to 12.00pm Included in this newsletter edition is a flyer for our Australian Football Club which allows boys the opportunity to represent their school playing AFL in the AFL Brisbane Junior Competition. After a hugely successful first year in 2014 we are really excited about growing both the club and the quality of the offerings available to our players. Boys who are eligible to play for our club include: Current ATC students Students who attended NJC in 2013 and 2014 Students enrolled to attend ATC in any year level in 2016 and 2017 With Soccer being played in Term 2 and Rugby being played in Term 3, it is possible for boys who love all codes of football to play all three for ATC. Scheduling of training and games allows for boys to participate in AFL and Soccer or Rugby with minimal disruption to either sport. I would like to invite all interested boys and families to come along and enjoy our sign on day this Sunday and look forward to seeing you all there. Br Miller Shield On Friday evening ATC not only looked sensational in their new swimming trunks and caps but performed brilliantly in the pool. Our Under 10 6 x 50m relay brought home our first swimming pennant and the Under 11 and Under 12 teams both won their heats. Our individual events were excellent as well, reflecting the hard work that the boys have been putting in during training. I d like to congratulate Mr Jones and our swimmers for an excellent season thus far and we look forward to seeing them in action again in the Centenary Pool on Friday evening, 20 February. Best of luck to all of our sportsmen, coaches and supporters for a great week of Cricket, Indoor Cricket, Swimming, Canoe Polo, Water Polo, Paddle Play and Volleyball ahead. Afternoon Activities in addition to the information in Mr Gardiner s newsletter section, swimmers in the 4.30pm session will have strength and conditioning sessions at the pool from 3.15pm to 4.15pm on Monday and Wednesday Warriors Go Brach! Dave Capra ATC Swimmers left nothing in the tank last Friday night!

2 Athletic Performance Coordinator Mr Luke Donatini So you ve just been selected into the A team, you ve just score the highest number of runs in your team, scored the most tries, kicked the most goals, taken the most wickets. You are in the purple patch and everything you seem to do on the playing field goes just right. You are confident, enthusiastic and life right now is good! Have you ever experienced this? These moments can be quite rare for most of us and we need to treasure such moments but, we cannot rest on our laurels. We must always be trying to improve, trying new things, doing things slightly differently to improve our result even when we are in the purple patch. Do not ever think that even when all is going well, that you can just sit back and relax. You always need to be working on improving, working on the basics, working on your game plan, working on you mental preparation, your focus and trying to be even better than you currently are. It is easy to start to cruise when you think all is going really well. Sometimes that cruise mode can become your worst enemy and you become complacent. NRL Coach, Wayne Bennett put it so aptly in a quote I read many years ago. You will always get what you always got if you always do what you ve always done. I like this quote for a number of reasons. It really puts what we do and how we do it into perspective. If you are struggling at something and feel like you are going poorly, you have to change things up. Be prepared to change to get a new outcome (hopefully a better outcome). If you are going well at something, look for other and even more effective ways to improve to greater your success. So it is vitally important to ensure that you always look to improve. Listen to your coach; Don t be afraid to ask questions; Be prepared to research (it is amazing what sporting skill acquisition drills can be found on You Tube, but be selective) Don t be afraid to try new thing and challenge yourself; Practice perfectly and then practice perfectly some more; Set achievable and realistic goals. When you achieve them aim higher with greater goals. Do the little things right (the one percenters) Stay focused on what you are wanting to achieve Have discipline and courage (read through last week s article for examples of discipline and courage) Take time to also recover, refresh, chill out and relax (sometimes when trying to achieve our goals we take ourselves to seriously and forget about just chilling out ) Most importantly ENJOY IT and HAVE FUN and stay POSITIVE. A lot of the time when you are positively enjoying what you are doing success will often follow.

3 Aquatics Coordinator Mr Paul Jones It has been another very busy week in the Ambrose Treacy swimming program. Last Thursday was the first ever ATC swimming club night. We had 45 swimmers attend for a very entertaining and successful night. Swimming club nights will be held every Thursday night during term 1 and everyone is welcome. If you can make 25m in the pool, then there is an event for you. On Friday night, a bus full of ATC swimmers left the comfort of our grounds to take on Nudgee College, Gregory Terrace and Brisbane State High in a 4 way competition. Our swimmers swam very well and the highlight of the night was winning the first 2 events 6 x 50m Freestyle relay. Our swimmers performed exceptionally all night and showed that we are a force to be reckoned with. Our next interschool event will be on Friday 20 th February at Centenary Pool, Gregory Terrace. On Monday, we had 24 swimmers from the years age groups attend the West Taylor Bridge Swimming Trials at St Peters College. The boys swam in a large number of events and it was great to see that 13 of our team made the WTB team to go on to Met West trials in a couple of weeks. The boys who made the team are Freddy Ayres, Zac Beachy-Head, Bryce Belcher, Keegan Belcher, Zygmund Bickle, Noah Clifford, James Ellis, Tom Kearney, Patrick Keyser, Euan McArdle, Pat Milne, Jo Newell and Robert Stringer. We wish them luck at the next stage of competition. Water Polo Both our teams played very well on the weekend and effort levels were again impressive. ATC 1 gave their opposition a start but dug deep to get back to a 5 all draw. This was a great all round team performance. ATC 2 are getting stronger with every game they play. They scored 4 goals on Saturday but not enough to secure a win. The first win of the season may be not too far away. It is a great to see the development of these younger players and the positive attitude they display when playing against much older teams. This week ATC 1 plays ATC 2 at 2.40pm at Musgrave Park Pool.

4 Cricket Coordinator Mr Brett Henschell Nudgee College provided ATC with a stiff test in Round 2 after the remarkable result in Round 1. Four of the eleven ATC teams were successful. Year 5 recorded the best result with three of the four teams taking the honors. 6B and 6C were narrow losers but could easily have turned this around with smarter play at crucial moments. 7A were the only successful team in the older Year groups but all were competitive. There is plenty of talent for coaches to work with and, if we can fix up our fielding structures, reduce the number of deliveries going down the leg side and keep a lid on byes and wides, more teams will enter the winners circle. I can t wait for Round 7 when many of our teams take on Nudgee College in a rematch. Notable performances were Jonte Roberts with 53 not out to guide the 7As home by one wicket and the entire 4A team who have recorded two resounding wins from two starts this season. Can they keep this effort going, Mr Jones? Cricket Intensives Monday afternoon (any time between 3:15pm and 5:00pm) for boys of any Year group who may desire a little extra coaching (user pays system) ATC teams play Ipswich Grammar School and Churchie this Saturday in Round 3. This will be another test for the boys but, having seen recent results, I believe we are capable of beating these traditionally strong cricketing schools all Year groups. TEAM RESULT SPIRIT OF CRICKET AWARD U10 Blue Ferny Red 54 v ATC 192 Tyson Juillerat U10 Green Ferny Green 86 v ATC 120 Callum MacLeod U10 White Wilston North Green 224 v ATC 74 Henry Hill and Charlie Mills Year 5A Nudgee College 9/140 defeated ATC 78 Ryan Forrester Year 5B Nudgee College 5/95 lost to ATC 7/134 Haydn Roberts Year 5C White Nudgee College 3/47 lost to ATC 3/65 Oscar Holt Year 5C Green Nudgee College 8/60 lost to ATC 5/80 Henry Bell Year 6A Nudgee College 147 defeated ATC 9/104 Charlie Neumann Year 6B Nudgee College7/82 defeated ATC 81 Marco Laboo Year 6C Nudgee College 80 defeated ATC 70 Callum Fitzgerald Year 7A Nudgee College 108 lost to ATC 121 Jonte Roberts Year 7B Nudgee College 6/147 defeated ATC 48 Sam Carr Year 8A Nudgee College 8/164 defeated ATC 9/136 Ben Rogers Year 8B Nudgee College 5/143 defeated ATC 65 Pat Robinson
