1 May I Wet Weather Line I I Head of Sport and Activities Mr Dave Capra Turning Up Isn t Enough Anyone who had watched some our QLD football teams play over the past few weeks would have to agree that just turning up to games isn t enough to get a result. The same goes for training. Turning up and being at training will not provide opportunity for development in fitness, skills or team cohesion. To truly reap the benefits of a training session I would love to see all of our boys switched on, engaged and challenging themselves to do the very best that they can do, and then next time, to do it even better! I was watching our Under 12 Blue team train a couple of weeks ago and was pleased to see the level of engagement that one of the boys in particular had to his training. Ryan Forrester is a Year 5 boy in a team of Year 6 and 7 students and has been given the captaincy because of this very reason; during training he switches on, trains as hard as he can, challenges himself to be the very best he can be and gets great results for it. Does this mean it is all work and no play? Quite the opposite in fact. Ryan loves his footy as much as the next guy (probably a little bit more!) The quality of the play and the enjoyment that boys get out of playing increases exponentially with the engagement of the players and the quality of their skills. If you asked the Brisbane Lions and Fremantle who was having the most fun and enjoying their footy, I suspect it wouldn t be our local lads! As we enter the winter season properly, we would like to challenge our boys to make the most out of their training. This means: Be early and prepared Switch on when the sessions starts Listen carefully to all instructions Seek feedback and use it immediately to improve Push yourself physically and mentally Pride yourself on not making errors Rehearse skills, both simple and complex Support your teams mates when they make an error and congratulate them when they get it right Use set backs as motivation Make improvements, not excuses Enjoy your training and the results of your hard work! Canoe Polo News Over the Easter Holiday weekend ATC students Jack Steel, Liam Warriner, Harry Elder (year 8) & Sam King Koi (year 6) along with 10 NJC old boys, proudly represented Queensland at the 2015 National Canoe Polo Championships in Nagambie, Victoria. Over three days the boys competed strongly in the U13 s and U16 s age divisions. Competition was tough from the other states, particularly in U16 s. Unperturbed by the cold Victorian conditions the boys went on to win Gold in U13 s and Silver in U16 s. The QLD team received positive feedback from other competitors and event organisers noting how professional they looked and the good sportsmanship displayed by the Qld team. Thank you to Donald Leigh, David Peters and Libby Anderson for coaching the boys and Karen Thompson as team manager. MET WEST GOLF if any boy at ATC has an AGU handicap of less Warriors go Brach! than 27 for boys younger than 12 or an AGU handicap of less than Dave Capra 16 for all other ages and wishes to trial for regional and state se-
2 Athletic Performance Coordinator Mr Luke Donatini Knowing ourselves better this week I would like to direct my thoughts to all of us, the coaches/leaders of our field who others look to for opportunity, support, knowledge and betterment in a chosen area (not necessarily always sport). I was sent an article last week by a fellow coach and good friend of mine. This article, which I am about to share with you, had a profound impact on me. Once I read it for the first time, it had me thinking a lot about how I operate, which then forced me to re-read it again and again throughout the course of the rest of the week. It had me really reflecting on me as a coach, as a leader and as a mentor to those I coach/teach. What I also like so much about this article is, I believe, it s a true reflection of someone who appears to not lay blame on others but more importantly was able to look at himself honestly in the mirror and then find the reasons why things happened the way they did. From this then being able to learn from it so that the same errors may not occur again. To become a better person in many ways! So, have a read of the below article, Brenton Sanderson: Why the Adelaide Crows sacked me, and make your own conclusions. I do hope that there is something in there for you too. Enjoy! Brenton Sanderson: Why the Adelaide Crows sacked me MODERN-DAY coaching requires modern-day management skills. On reflection, I made a number of errors at Adelaide, which ultimately cost me my job. It can happen very quickly if not properly identified and adjusted. In 2012 we took the Crows from a seven-win season and 14th on the ladder to 17 wins and a heartbreaking pre-liminary final loss to even-tual -premier Hawthorn the next year. Two seasons later I was sacked after missing the finals by just one win, two years in succession. These are some of the mistakes I made. 1. I didn t accept a variety of personalities within my staff and couldn t learn how to get the best out of individuals by promoting two-way open communication. I didn t listen as much as I should have. I did too much telling. 2. Crisis management. A coach must be able to pull a team together and -allocate specific roles rather than -attempt to control the situation. The harder it got, the more I tried to do more. 3. You have to learn how to have and deliver the hard conversations. Most importantly, learn how to do this consistently. There is a time to be blunt and clear, but you must always follow it up, preferably within the next 24 hours, and never use sarcasm as a means to get a message across. 4. I was always promoting myself as an open door -manager, but this wasn t consistent. In challenging times, I shut key people out. 5. Time management. I felt I was always time poor, but it was more likely I wasn t organised to prioritise and delegate. I found it hard to say no to external obligations too, which I understand is part of the role, but I was reluctant to admit when I was struggling emotionally and physically. The senior coach must not allow himself to burn out. 6. I talked openly too often about finding and identifying the right people for certain roles within the club, which I know left certain staff feeling disillusioned. 7. I never really identified a key mentor I could trust to bounce ideas off and talk to when I needed help. When I lost Dean Bailey, I lost an -important mentor. 8. I didn t treat my players equally. I spent more time with those executing their roles -effectively, while neglecting those who needed me most. Players typically are hard to find when they know they are out of form or on the fringe, so I needed to chase them harder and make this a priority. There are always 10 to 12 players who are going to play each week, then there are 10 to 12 players who know they aren t going to play anytime soon. It s the 20 players in--between, who are in and out of the side regularly that you need to spend most time on and with. Source:

All youth ( 12 s and 13 s) please be at your ground 60 mins prior to your game for warm up. If your son is unavailable to play please advise your team manager ASAP. Don t miss out on the chance to attend the BOYS DAY OUT next Sunday May 17 at Lions Vs Port Adelaide. A great bonding afternoon for father and son alike ( all family members welcome). Aquatics Coordinator Mr Paul Jones HEATED POOL WARM WATER The Ambrose Treacy College swimming pool is heated to 27.5 degrees and is a beautiful place to swim during the entire year. Don t be deterred by the cooler weather as the swimming conditions at ATC are the same every day of the year. STROKE DEVELOPMENT Classes are running every afternoon after school. These classes are a great opportunity to develop your swimming in classes with less numbers than in the summer rush. COMPETITIVE SQUAD TRAINING Winter is the time of year when you develop skills that you need for competitive swimming. When you work on the fundamentals at this time of year, you get a jump on the field when competition starts. If you want to be fast in summer, you need to do some training in winter. ADULT SQUAD If you need to get fit, then adult swimming squads at ATC are the way to achieve this. You don t have to be a good swimmer, we have programs for all levels. Squads are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9am and everyone is welcome. Any inquires about the above programs can be made to aquatics@atc.qld.edu.au
7 Rugby Union at ATC Mr Dave Capra Format In 2015 Rugby will be played during Term 3 for the first time. Our rugby season will resemble our cricket and football season in that we will play boys colleges from around SE QLD who wish to engage in quality games of rugby with the boys from ATC. Rugby is a sport for everyone and we encourage all boys of all experiences to get involved in the game they play in heaven. With ATC Year 4 rugby well and truly underway, all boys in Year 5 to 8 who wish to play rugby for ATC will do so. Players will be graded into age groups teams (Under 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14) and we will field as many teams in each age group as we have boys who are keen to play all boys who wish to play, regardless of whether they have played Rugby before or not, will play for ATC in Rugby Pre-Season With the emphasis on Football, AFL, Tennis and Cross Country this term we ask that boys focus on their commitments in these areas and prioritise this training and competition. Outside of this, we will be running a rugby pre-season during the term initially for boys who wish to be considered for A teams and then later in the term we will expand this to include all boys. Over the next week I will be working with year level groups to determine who would like to play rugby for the College and who would like to be considered for A teams. We will then invite boys who nominate to attend training sessions and will then select a group of players who will make up the nucleus of the A and B team in each age group to train on Wednesday (strength and conditioning) and Friday afternoons (skills). As mentioned above, we will then expand training groups later in the term to prepare all boys for the 2015 season. In addition to the Term 3 season we will have several trial games this term for a number of teams in each age group, on the following dates: Saturday 30 May Saturday 13 June Saturday 20 June Mon-Wed 6-8 July Nudgee College St Patrick s College SLC 7s Spartan Rugby Carnival (Ipswich, Under 13 and Under 14) Boys who do not wish to be considered for A teams and do not wish to do pre-season rugby are welcome to join squads in Week 1 Term 3 for final trial sessions in preparation for the first round of the season. If you have any queries regarding Rugby please do not hesitate to contact me.
8 Football Congratulations to everyone involved in the ATC vs NC Indoor Football competition on Saturday morning. It was fantastic to see our footballers making the most of the opportunity to play a different form of the game rather than sleeping in on a beautiful Saturday morning. Our thanks to staff and parents for making the effort to change plans to ensure that we had full numbers at all games. This weekend we have most games against Ipswich Grammar School at the IGS Playing Fields at Brassall. To find these follow Workshop Road, then turn into Pearse Drive and follow this through the housing estate until you get to the IGS playing fields gates. Apologies to the 7/8 Blue team and the 5/6 Greens, our opposition school forfeited and we were unable to re-schedule another game as all schools had already filled their draws for this week.
