1 MAGPIE NEWS Magpies JRLFC Newsletter April 2017 Presidents Report It is great that the regular season has now started. Thanks to coaches, committee members and volunteers for all your hard work to prepare us for the 2017 season. I have been fortunate over rounds one and two to move around and watch all teams play. It is great to see all players having fun, compete to the best of their ability and play with the right spirit. I am also pleasantly surprised with the level of skill exhibited. I am pleased to announce we have again experienced player number growth for the 2017 season. While we would love a few more players for our U9 league team and U9s and U13s league tag teams the remaining teams have great numbers to get us through the season. A reminder that training is an important part of the season so please ensure that players attend training as much as possible. This allows coaches to work on team based activities including ball work and defensive structure which is essential to the combinations in all teams. If you have any feedback or suggestions don t hesitate to send me an via enquiries@magpiesjrlfc.com.au. Thanks Nathan Allan President Magpies JRLFC Players wanted League U9s League Tag U9, U13s. 2 Rounds 1 & 2 coaches report U9s League Tag The girls were required to play two games in Junee for the opening round. Enthusiasm was fantastic from all the girls and they improved from their first to second game. All the girls played well with a special mention going to Ruby Doll and Tess Phillips. Round 2 verses Tumba Batlow resulted in further improvement by all the girls scoring plenty of tries and tagging strongly. An awesome effort by all girls including Isabelle Gamble and Ali Haisell. U15s League Tag Round 1 verses Junee for our opening 2017 match, a special thanks to Joel Mellen for managing the girls in my absence, Junee come out firing to be leading 24-0 at half time, our girls fought back to narrow the final score going down Round 2 was played at home against Tumba/Batlow, after a slow first half start the girls stepped up the pace in the second half to run away with a good win 38-6, standout forwards were Bridget Rodet and Izzy Wurtz who both made several line breaks, Pip Kenyon also kicked a nice grubber to set up a try. Due prior commitments not all coaches were available to provide reports in this newsletter. Coach in the spotlight Kyle Scott U13s league What do you enjoy about coaching? I enjoy seeing the boys improve their skills and putting what we practice at training into action on the field on game day. How can parents help? Getting the boys to training each week and helping out in the canteen on duty days. What NRL team to do you support? Roosters What type of music do you listen to? I mostly listen to rock/ metal music. What do you like doing when you are not coaching footy? Spending time with my family and travelling. Wagga Magpies JRLFC will be proudly participating in the Shoosh round. Kyle Scott Game day award sponsor 2

3 Rounds 1 & 2 coaches report continued U6 League The under 6 s made a terrific start to the season at Junee. All kids had fun which is most important at this age. Special mention to Ella and Mason for making a strong start to their careers with the Wagga Magpies JRLFC. Good to see all players learning the basics enjoying their introduction to Rugby league. The under 6 s played really well against Tumbarumba at Wagga. Most children are now confident they understand the game and those who are a bit unsure are improving with every game and training session. Special mention to Jackobi and Charlotte for length of the field tries and Grayden for some impressive defence. Great effort by all involved. U8 League The U8 s made a great start to the season. Our team welcomed a few new faces, who are progressing well, and our experienced players should be commended on making the new ones feel welcome and showing them the ropes. The teams first round in Junee was tough, with our team having to play two games against two different and very strong Junee sides. The boys came away with a win in their first game and a loss in their second. All players played their hardest and had a lot of fun. Round Two saw the U8 s again play two games against the Wagga Kangaroos-Blue and Red. The first game saw some very hard tackles from our boys as well as some fantastic runs. The score line showed our training had paid off, with our boys coming away with a win. It s a pleasure to watch the enthusiasm and team work displayed from our players. Keedan Chatterton, a newcomer, was given the award for this game, for his hard tackling and enthusiasm. Again, fantastic team work, and even harder tackling saw three standout players in this game-seasoned players Logan Foster and Josh Haisell, and a newcomer, Jonte Kennedy. It was great to hear from the referee that our players were fair and the best tacklers he d seen in a long time. Congratulations to all the U8 s on a fantastic start to the season. Due prior commitments not all coaches were available to provide reports in this newsletter. Keane Family Fundraiser U12 player Jack Keane requires medical treatment during Wagga Magpies JRLFC is fundraising to assist. There is two ways you can help out. 1. 5 Coaches Report Rounds 1&2 continued U9s League A brilliant start to the year verses Junee. All the boys played really well. Lots of tries scored by a number of players highlights how the boys shared the ball and moved forward attacking the try line. Parents pick - Andrew. Round 2 verses Tumba Batlow was a great game to watch, both teams played well. It was a fast and hard game which showcased attacking flair and strong defensive efforts. Parents pick Joseph (Jock). U10s League A promising start to the year in Junee. A number of new players welcomed to the team/club. The boys have been training well and demonstrated both strong defence and handy attacking skills. Parent pick - Ben The second round verses Tumba Batlow the team struggled to tackle some of their big players in the first half. The boys continued with a courageous effort. In the second half keeping the opposition scoreless with impressive defence. Parent pick - Jordan. U11s League Wagga Magpies U11s are going well in There is a number of new players to the game and to the team and all players are getting on very well and forming a good bond. All players are improving every week during training as well as games. Some notable mentions are Charlie Davey, Cooper Hall, Curtis Moffatt and Lincoln Lauder. First game was a loss to Junee but some good signs and the second game a win against Tumbarumba/ Batlow was a high. The second game stood out because we played with no reserves and every player "put in". U12s League We kicked off the season with a road trip to Junee and had a solid first outing. The game kicked off with a 80m solo try from Will Cooper setting the trend for the remainder of the game. Jake Hinds started the game with smart options from dummy half. A high completion rate with minimum errors contributed to Isaac Hardman finishing the games with four tries. A great start to the season from the entire team. Round 2 verses Turvey Park was another solid hit out again with another high completion rate setting the platform for another good win. Mason scored an impressive try but suffered a leg injury while scoring which required the rest of the forwards to step up. Off the back of the forwards Rowan, Isaac and Angus linked up well utilising speed and the width of the field as practiced at training. Another good performance across the park keeping the momentum going into round 3. U13s League U13's came up against a very strong Junee side. We started strongly and after conceding the first try, managed to hit back quickly through our captain Dylan Morrow. We battled well without much luck and went in at half time 16-4 down. Fatigue set in and the boys went on to concede a number of points in the second half, despite some strong tackling from Will "Sonny Bill" Sali and a disallowed length of the field intercept try from Luke Lawrence. Looking to put in a better performance next game. Raiders V Roosters Bus Trip Sunday 28/5/17 GIO Stadium 2017 Magpies players travel free and redeem GA tickets from the NRL Parents / carers $20 per seat plus will need to purchase a GA ticket. Players must be accompanied by a parent / carer. Bus departing mid morning, BBQ lunch provided, returning on the completion of the NRL match. Seats are limited, first in best dressed. Bookings close 3/5/17 5

6 Magpies Duty Day 6 May 2017 Magpies JRLFC will be hosting round 5 at Parramore Park, Wagga Wagga. In addition to the matches our teams play we are responsible for the set up, pack up of the fields, running of the canteen including preparation, and clean up. Bruce Grantham and Grant Hinds will be coordinating the field set up and pack up which involves installation of goal post pads, corner post, chairs and tables deploying bins and packing it up at the end of the day. They will be looking for helpers to commence at 7:30am for approximately an hour and again on the completion of play. Please let them know if you can assist. Amanda Hardman and Sharon Godber will be managing the canteen preparation, operation and clean up. Duties include stocking fridges and ovens, cooking chips, serving customers, cleaning and pack up. They will be looking for volunteers commencing at 8:00am. This year will see the introduction of a roster system where families are selected from each team to volunteer for a timeslot and if you can t make you will need to negotiate with another parent to cover this timeslot in return for you covering them for next time. With the number of families we have involved this year this will mean each family will only need to volunteer once or twice for an hour or two for this season. Based on previous years we know some families will be able to give additional time on duty day and that is always welcomed. On the conclusion of our duty day, all volunteers and supporters are welcome to join committee members at the Thomas Blamey Tavern and Bistro. The Thomas Blamey Bistro is one of our wonderful sponsors and it is a great place to have a refreshment and meal after the game. Contact us Silver Partner Lake Road Veterinary Clinic Volunteers of the month All our committee members and volunteers are valued however a special mention to Ruby Sharp and Jodie Hinds. Ruby was a regular helper in the canteen during the Hardy Shield and Jodie has done a fantastic job preparing the orders for the 2017 merchandise. enquiries@magpiesjrlfc.com.au Facebook Magpies Webpage Quote of the month Good teams become great ones when the members trust each another enough to surrender the me for the we.
