1 N ARRE Warren is the first club to hold a premiership cup after last week s wonderful victory over a gallant Langwarrin side in the MPNFL Colts competition. The game was a great spectacle under lights at Seaford and another tick for both the Colts grade and also the demonstration of support by the local football public. This Saturday we turn our focus to Frankston Park where the finale to the Nepean League competition will be played out. The senior game between minor premiers Sorrento and challengers Somerville will highlight the day, preceded by the reserves and under 18s curtain raisers. One of the challenges faced by all finalists in all grades to date has been the persistent wet and windy weather and the effect that has had on playing conditions. Last weekend there were implications for both Nepean and Casey Cardinia League finals. Play was delayed at Rye while damage to the playing surface was repaired and players and officials are to be commended for pushing on and completing the game. Similarly, plans for semi-finals games at Berwick on Saturday were forced to be changed at the last minute after the ground was deemed too wet to play on and switched to Pakenham. While it was disappointing such a move had to be made, it was received well and the weekend crowd at the Casey Cardinia League finals was not affected and in fact was up on last year. That is a tick for the support that the football following public in the area provides across the district. The MPNFL will continue to be vigilant as far as providing the best possible conditions within our control for finals games to be played. Office Talk Clubs are now winding their seasons up and that is an important part of the preparation for next season. Many will be looking for new committee members for 2011 and also coaches to replace on-field leaders who are moving on. It is often called the silly season and the focus for those in charge must be to complete the legal and constitutional requirements of their clubs, in particular on their finances and auditing, and then conduct any and all business in a professional and open manner. The MPNFL is proud of the people who have put so much time and effort in to running our clubs and the integrity with which they have conducted themselves throughout the year. Respect is the key element here. Finally, congratulations to all individual award winners who were presented at this weeks MPNFL Vote Count evenings. There were some very exciting counts and it was generally agreed that the umpires got it right with the winners and those who performed well throughout the year. The evenings were a great success again and particular congratulations for all who attended and represented their clubs with pride and respect. The behaviour and attention given to the callers and the winners of awards throughout the night was excellent, and demonstrated the professional attitudes now being promoted through clubs from the top down. 3 Nepean League Finalé Today brings the curtain down on the Nepean League season when the all conquering Sorrento again comes up against the reborn Somerville team for the right to hold the Premiership Cup. It is like ground hog day for the Eagles as they have had to get over Red Hill twice and now face favourites Sorrento for the second time hoping this time for a different outcome. As indicated a couple of weeks ago these teams last played in a Grand Final way back in 1940 when the then named Somerville Baxter team overwhelmed Sorrento for a big win under Keith O Brien. Football of the late 30 s had gone through some transformation with the trial of district football which was abandoned in 1938, the emergence of the Baxter Football Club for two seasons before they joined forces with Somerville in The war in Europe was still a European conflict when Grand Final day came around after Somerville Baxter had defeated Navy and Sorrento who had come from fourth and only made the finals by percentage knocked over Seaford/Carrum and then Navy to play in the big one. The Teams Somerville George Bullen, William Gomm, Ron Armstrong, Hilton Armstrong, Harold Bullen, Peter Atherton, George Gomm, Ron Peterson, Len Perriam, Colin Murray, David Nillsson, Jack Woods, Keith Wagner, John Wotherspoon, Harold Thornell, John Sheffield, W. Cornford, R. Kiel, Norm Spunner, B. Wilson, G. White, Davies, Deacon, Jim Mc Gregor, B. Dickson The game was played in perfect conditions at Frankston Park in front of a huge crowd however the standard of play was below the standard of many home and away games. After an even first term Somerville did as they pleased with goals often coming so easy that it appeared that there was no opponent. The Bullen brothers were dominant and by half time the difference was Historians 47 points and appearing there was little chance of a Sorrento fight back. After the main break the Gulls tried hard and did bridge the gap to under 5 goals but a late surge snuffed out the thought of a comeback. The last was even but the damage had been done by an impressive Somerville team who had topped the ladder and now had the Standard Cup in their procession. Somerville held a presentation dinner in honour of Keith O Brien who after two years in the district had left to join the RAAF, the event was held at the Bullen s Packing Shed with the 1940 Premiership flag adorning Keith O Brien A typical day in the office (Let s talk) Next time you re thinking about how money can grow your agribusiness, call us. Mr O Brien was presented with a money belt plus a separate memento from a relative of the Bullen family. The evening continued until a late hour and finally concluded with Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem before wandering homeward satisfied they had helped celebrate a memorable occasion. Both Sorrento and Somerville will both for the first time have two teams competing in Grand Finals on the same day, the seniors and the Under 18 s. In Peninsula it is a replay of the Qualifying Final Seaford hanging onto the dream of immortality and Mt Eliza hoping to break a run of poor final series. Seaford have an overall 43 to 32 winning record over the Mounties and a big win in their last meeting two weeks ago, the dream should live on. Over in Casey Cardinia, Cranbourne take on Narre Warren in what is another do or die event, Cranbourne have to fight back after a shock loss last weekend whilst Narre Warren continue to deny the critics to become the best side in the last decade off the Casey League. Looking back at these teams since they first met back in 1954 they have locked horns 104 times with Cranbourne holding the advantage 58 to 46 and the same can be said of finals with the Eagles holding a 4 to 1 lead in the 5 encounters. In fact Narre have not beaten Cranbourne since the Grand Final of 1957 and that record is likely to remain intact. Doug Dyall - MPNFL Historian 6 MPNFL Since 1908

7 CFNP Extended for 5 Years Facilities Planning, Partnerships & Participation! As you enjoy the finals atmosphere at the footy and netball today, take a moment to look at the facilities needed to put on the show. Notice the rooms needed for players to change, the playing field/court itself, the scoreboard, interchange and timekeeper facilities, social rooms, lights, posts and a large range of other necessary items. Many of these required facilities and infrastructure are in good shape; others are projects awaiting redevelopment or refurbishment. It is a costly exercise for these to be developed and then maintained and volunteers at clubs need some support to enable such facilities to reach their highest standard. Thankfully, the past five years has seen an unprecedented improvement in such facilities thanks to the Country Football Netball Program (CFNP). As of September 2010, close to 300 projects throughout regional and rural Victoria will have been allocated CFNP funding to the value of approximately $11.2 million with a combined project cost nearing $30 million! The CFNP was established in 2005 following a recommendation stemming from the Parliamentary Rural, Regional Services and Development Committee Inquiry into Country Football. Administered by Sport and Recreation Victoria, it has been an unmitigated success, due largely to the partnerships it has leveraged between local and state government and football and netball authorities, allowing volunteers at club level an opportunity and funding to implement some often long-held great ideas to improve their precinct. The Victorian State Government recently committed an additional $9 million to the CFNP through its Ready for Tomorrow: A Blueprint for Regional and Rural Victoria. This $9 million will grow to more than $10 million thanks to co contributions from the WorkSafe VCFL, the AFL and Netball Victoria and extends the CFNP for another 5 years. This is fabulous news of which the Work- Safe VCFL is extremely pleased and we again extend our appreciation to the State Government and the AFL for making the program possible. This extends the CFNP until the 2014/15 financial year and applications are now open (see link at our website for further information). Grants of up to $100,000 are possible to any one project, but keep in mind that an average grant is around $35,000. Clubs or umpiring groups need to first express their interest to their local Council on the CFNP Expression of Interest form and then Council can lodge an application if and when they are convinced of the project s merit. CFNP funded projects generally include: Modifying existing football or netball club pavilions/ facilities to improve usage and access; Development or upgrading football playing fields; VCFL Message Development or upgrading of netball courts; and Development or upgrading of lighting facilities. We have noticed some wonderful examples of projects, such as ground and water supply upgrades that droughtproof the surface, lighting to allow night football, better umpire facilities to cater for both genders, and many innovative change and social room improvements that help improve participation both on the field and between all people after on-field competition is over. An evaluation of more than 100 funded projects found that almost all CFNP projects assisted participation growth and made clubs more viable. Most also help the local economy and assisted club volunteers. The CFNP has also funded five premier regional venues to develop the basic amenities required to prepare venues to host future AFL preseason fixtures or, in some cases, to develop a premier quality regional venue for local fixtures. Venues funded to this level so far include Morwell, Shepparton, Ballarat, Horsham and Wangaratta. Other venues are expected to be invited in the coming years to help them reach similar status. The best projects seem to occur after some really good forward planning, such as the undertaking of a site master plan. Venues that do this not only have a much greater chance of attracting grants, but also end up with a venue that seems to have all facilities they need, in the right spot and at the right standard. If you remember just three words regarding facility planning and development, we believe they should be PLANNING, PARTNERSHIPS and PARTICIPATION. Take some time to get the PLANNING right first, ensure you are PARTNERING up well with your local Council and others, and focus on seeking funding for those facility improvements that will best impact PARTICIPATION levels at the venue, whether that be on-field or off. If you need advice or assistance regarding football facility planning and development, please do not hesitate to contact your respective Area Manager or our Planning, Facilities and Junior Football Manager Shayne Ward on (03) to help you and your club develop your ideas into tangible improvements. The WorkSafe VCFL are committed to improving all aspects of facilities, grounds, courts, etc to ensure our sports continue to be first of mind for those aspiring to be involved both on and off the field. Good luck to all involved in today s Grand Finals and lead-up finals and we feel for all Leagues and Clubs seriously affected by the current flooding crisis. Best Regards, Glenn Scott Chief Executive Officer Since 1908 MPNFL 9

9 Preview Preliminary bout a bird fight NARRE Warren defeated Pakenham at the Toomuc Reserve for the second time this year on Sunday, and the reward for the Magpies is a crack at Cranbourne for a place in this year s grand final. Cranbourne stumbled to its second loss in its last three games in Saturday s second semi-final, giving Beaconsfield a charmed ride into the one game that matters and drastically altering the premiership market. Beacy s opponent will be the side that wants it the most the key to every finals match. While Narre Warren s triumph was not unexpected, the way it was earned certainly was. Pakenham shot out to lead by four goals early in the game and maintained a buffer until the 14-minute mark of the final term when the Magpies relentless pressure finally broke their back. How much effort that took out of Narre Warren will only be known after this Sunday s game. Beaconsfield made a huge statement to its competition the day before, while Cranbourne was as flat as billiard table. That fact was that one side came to play a finals game and the other thought they only had to show up to win. Under a coach like Doug Koop that lesson would be well learned one would expect, however momentum is a strange thing and if the minor premiers have a hint of that attitude this weekend it will bangbang and goodbye to Cranbourne in The challenge is set. Preliminary Final Cranbourne will go into this weekend s game as warm favourites against Narre Warren despite the effort of the Magpies to down Pakenham in last weekend s desperate first semi-final. That fact is that the minor premiers have been head and shoulders above the rest for most of the season and that has included Cranbourne who they beat by 28 points at their only meeting this season. That was at Casey Fields and, importantly, the Eagles had 31 scoring shots to the Magpies 23 in a dominant display that day. This weekend s game will be at the neutral Pakenham ground but that will not scare either side. Magpie supporters had plenty to cheer about on the weekend and the Eagles brains trust was watching and taking notes. High on the list of plusses was the performance of star midfielder Michael Collins who was machinelike as he systematically broke the hearts of several Lion taggers and took control of the game in the second half. He simply out ran opponents and maintained his feet and composure as others fell over away. Collin had assistance around the ground from smart team mate Daniel Field, together with Jarrod Anderson, Justin Marriott and Tim Werner, but the relaxation of pressure applied by the Lions late in the game may have given a false sense of brilliance to the victors. Coach Matt Shiners made a number of moves that worked a treat too. Cranbourne s joy factor in the second semi-final was limited indeed. The performance of Leigh Holt around the ground was outstanding, particularly given the windy conditions were not conducive to his game, while defenders Nick Barker and Brandon Osborne also did their best to create play. Strong marking big man Adam Wright rebounded well on occasions, but a lack of spark from the Lions prime movers in Justin Berry, Ryan Davey and Ray George was a huge problem that was seized upon by Beacy. Cranbourne must learn the lessons of that game swiftly to make amends. This week s game will be highlighted by attack because Narre Warren has nothing to lose and Cranbourne needs to get some positive vibes back into its game. The Magpies have goal scoring options in veteran spearhead Brett Evans, elusive youngster Jackson Parker, Collins and star half forward Nick Scanlon. The battle between Evans and fellow veteran Brett McMaster will be worth watching if they both go for their marks. Scanlon s marker will likely be Matthew Thompson or Since 1908 MPNFL 11

11 Preview Robert Beadel and whoever gets the task will need to be on their game. The options for Collins depends on where he starts, deep of up the field on ball. The Eagles attack has a good combination of strength with Marc Holt and Troy Tharle-Adams, together with agility through Matthew Fletcher and Berry. The Magpies defence led by Steven Kidd, Anderson, Col McNamara and captain Glenn Hamilton is dependable but will need a chop-out from the side s midfielders, when there is pressure applied. Hamilton will likely miss the game after being hospitalised by a heavy clash in last week s game. Their history this year provides only a minor guide to the chances if each but one thing that can not be allowed to happen at Casey Fields is another bout of big-headedness. That is what looked to cost them last weekend and the worst thing that players in finals can do is look at the stats and then think that they have the wood on an opponent before they take the field. Cranbourne went through the season with only two losses and Saturday night s post-match in the room of mirrors was a relatively new experience for the side in It was just as well that it happened now because complacency is any side s worst enemy and that looked like the affliction that the Eagles were suffering from. Doug Koop will not allow that to happen again. Cranbourne has class oozing out of it across the field and this weekend their incredible work ethic will hold the key to ultimate success. There is a suspicion that the younger Magpie players like Werner, Ricky Bevan, Matt Lee and Josh Tonna, who combined so well to get their side over the line the weekend before, might have played their grand final last weekend and may have nothing left in the tank for this week. If the weather turns nasty again, Cranbourne will need to dig deep because they were physically intimidated by Beaconsfield and Narre Warren has already proved that they don t mind it in close either. The return of strong bodied Eagle Curtis Barker from suspension will be a big plus, as will the drive provided by play makers Rick Hames and Ryan Jones. Cranbourne has looked the side to beat this season and last Saturday s loss was an aberration on the way to the grand final. The Eagles will take their place in the big one. Reserves AS predicted Beaconsfield catapulted into the grand final with a convincing victory last weekend, leaving Cranbourne and Narre Warren to argue the point about who challenges them for the silverware. This weekend s game could be the highlight of the reserves finals series. Cranbourne outran Pakenham last weekend with coach Troy Datson giving players like captain Damien Whitnall, Jack Kelly, Luke Martin and Frank Martinicchio license to take the game on. That they did and that they will have to do again with even more vigour on Sunday. The Magpies were beaten but not disgraced and will be keen to earn another week s training. With the senior experience of Daniel Borninkhof, Daniel Vandenbroek, Chris Potalej and Damian Collins leading the charge, there is no reason to believe that will not happen. The key to this game will be which side starts quickest, gets the lead and then has the opportunity to control the tempo. Narre Warren is the best in the business at those traits. Under 18 s NARRE Warren players can count themselves hugely unlucky that they are not enjoying a week s refreshment prior to the grand final after going down by only two points to Beaconsfield last weekend. However that game must now be assigned to history and coach Mark Douglas must concentrate his side s focus on downing its unexpected preliminary final rival Berwick. The Wickers pounded Cranbourne out of the race last weekend and coach Gary Wakefield will be rightfully confident. Berwick benefited from the inclusion of Jake Sheppard and Mitch Talbett, who came back from the seniors last weekend, but it will take more than its stars to win again. Narre Warren has top-notchers across every line led by captain Michael Tomich and star forward Kong Tut and, importantly, they are a settled unit. This is a toss of the coin prediction because both sides look to have the ability to win it. 13 Stingrays Stingrays into Preliminary final after strong win The Dandenong Southern Stingrays head to another TAC Cup Preliminary final after a strong 71 point win over the North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup Semi final at Visy park, Carlton last Saturday. The Stingrays and Rebels both went into the game in good form following big wins. The Stingrays 64 point winners over the Oakleigh Chargers and the Rebels 100 point winners over the Murray Bushrangers last weekend. In very wet conditions after torrential overnight and early morning rain, the Stingrays were never troubled as they jumped out to a 3 goal lead early in the game and extended their lead at every change. Young stars Dylan Shiel and Adam Treloar were both in sparkling form with 10 possessions in the first term and the supply to tall forwards Tom Lynch and Arryn Siposs was first class as the both caused all sorts of grief to the rebels defenders. The second term was one of complete domination by the Stingrays as they kept the Rebels scoreless. At one stage in late in the second quarter the inside 50 s were 33 to 6 which epitomized the control of the game by the Stingrays. On top all over the ground with plenty of good work and pressure in the midfield, solid rebounding defense and an energetic multi faceted front half, the Stingrays extended the 19 point ¼ time lead out to 37 at the long break. The third term was the best quarter for the Rebels as they managed 3 goals but by late in the term the Stingrays had replied with 4 of their own to be 43 points ahead at the last change. Another 5 goals to the Stingrays to the Rebels one pushed the lead to 71 and with a final inside 50 count of 75 to 32 it was a comfortable clinical display by the ladder leading Stingrays. Shiel and Treloar continued their good work and were assisted in the middle of the ground by Mitch Gent, Jake Greeley, Tom Curren, Brad Tagg and Luke Parker in a mid field that set up the good win. Lynch and Siposs were the dominant forwards on the ground and the Stingrays backline led by Riley Heddles, Matt Buntine and Jordan Kelly were impassable as the defended well and counter attacked with plenty of energy and speed. Next weeks Preliminary final has the Stingrays tackling the Calder Cannons in a 2009 Grand final rematch after the Cannons easily accounted for the Geelong Falcons in a bit of an upset. The game will be on Saturday at 11.30am Visy Park, Carlton and entry is free. 17 Southern Umpires Club Recognition Award Every week our umpires front up to the various grounds and from the moment they speak to the team manager they get an idea of how they are going to be treated on the day. There are certain clubs that make a commitment to ensure that the umpires are made to feel welcome and more than just a person there to do a job. This was most evident during the Umpire Appreciation Round in July; however some clubs do not restrict themselves to looking after us for just one week of the season. Not many people outside the Southern Umpires Association realise that for the past 20 years we have been making a presentation of the Club Recognition Award in appreciation of services made to umpires and umpiring. It is our way of saying thank you to a selected club for doing those extra things that make us part of the game. Often it is just a simple matter of ensuring that the balls and paperwork are in order. Some team managers even take the time to fill out the match details on score cards and match reports. Some clubs have bottled water available in a fridge in the rooms or provide food and refreshments after the game. Having clean and tidy rooms with a functioning interior toilet and hot water in the showers, even when the players are using theirs, is appreciated. Leaving the room clear of clutter and unwanted equipment and providing sufficient clothes hooks and chairs for up to twelve people is a real bonus. A few even cater for our growing number of female umpires by providing separate change and showering facilities. We know that a lot of clubs are restricted in what they can provide in the way of facilities. By making the effort to improve amenities for umpires, clubs have shown that they respect the conditions under which we have to operate. Occasionally an umpire may need assistance with a minor injury or niggle and the willingness of trainers to take time to do some strapping or provide a quick massage is remarkable. Ultimately it is people who make a difference. Being invited in for a drink after the game offers umpires the opportunity to meet players and officials in a relaxed atmosphere to discuss the day s proceedings. It is one thing to make the invitation but the clubs with a genuine interest in developing a positive relationship with umpires make certain that someone takes an interest in them. The days of free drink cards are well gone but there are certain club officials who do see that the first drink is taken care of and engage in conversation before moving on to socialise with other members. When officials, coaches, players and supporters include umpires, they contribute to a feeling of accept- SOUTHERN UMPIRES MAJOR PARTNER CLAYTON FRANKSTON SOUTH HASTINGS MORNINGTON CRANBOURNE FRANKSTON BAYSIDE KARINGAL NARRE WARREN DANDENONG PLAZA FOUNTAIN GATE LYNBROOK NOBLE PARK DANDENONG MARKET HALLAM MENTONE PAKENHAM ENDEAVOUR HILLS Since 1908 MPNFL 19

This year the SUA membership was asked to nominate clubs that they thought were deserving of the Recognition Award and they came up with three finalists- Narre Warren, Seaford and Mt. Eliza. In presenting the award on Wednesday night, SUA Chairman Jeff Jones commended all three clubs for fulfilling the Vic Health statement on becoming a successful club: Regardless of the sport played, successful clubs have a long strong history, commitment to including others and a family and social focus. They value and reward members, communicate and promote regularly, and have policies that cover all bases. All of them have shown great support for our umpires throughout the season but ultimately the members felt that Seaford was most deserving of the award. Gary Sutton summed it up best when he said, For those of us who choose to attend the social rooms, a warm welcome and complimentary refreshments are commonplace, together with friendly conversation with club officials and identities such as Rick East and Brett Irving. Through their respect, professional attitude and hospitality before, during and after the match the Seaford Football Club has treated all the visiting umpires as valued contributors on game days. For promoting interaction such as this between Club and Umpires, the Southern Umpires Association is pleased to recognise Seaford as a perfect example of the commitment the MPNFL has towards fostering a positive atmosphere for all involved in our great game.
